1. Doctor, Steven, look!

2. What is it, my dear? What have you found? Hmm?

3. The statue. They've finished the statue.

4. What's happened? The head, it wasn't meant to be like that.

5. No. It was meant to be a human being. And now it's a Monoid. Wonder why?

6. Well, I'm not sure, dear boy.

7. However, the statue's finished.

8. That means 700 years must have passed since we last stood here. Hmm.

9. Is that why the place looks so grotty?

10. Must be.

11. But we've only been gone a few seconds.

12. Yes, I know, my dear. It's pretty hard for you to understand.

13. Yes, well, the Guardians said it would take 700 years

14. for this spaceship to reach the planet Refusis II.

15. If that navigation chart's anything to go by,

16. I'd say that they're almost there.

17. Yes, I think you're right.

18. Then where are the Guardians?

19. Well, at least the descendants of those we knew before.

20. Surely they should be here, guiding the ship?

21. I don't think that will be necessary, dear boy.

22. It appears they've introduced some form of automatic guiding device.

23. Yes, but you'd think one of them would be standing by

24. to make sure nothing goes wrong.

25. Yes, well now, let's have a look at the scanner and see if that may help.

26. Ah!

27. Well, that's the room with the Earth's population

28. stored in microform.

29. It's one of the Guardians.

30. That looks like a Monoid.

31. Yes, but the Guardian's working as a kind of servant.

32. Yes, he's not the only one who's doing that.

33. Looks like some kind of kitchen.

34. Yes, and they're sort of slaves, aren't they?

35. What was that?

36. - Looked like some kind of gun. - But the arm?

37. Yes, it appears the Monoids have become overlords.

38. Doctor, look!

39. Who are you?

40. - Things have obviously changed. - He can speak. They couldn't before.

41. I asked, who are you? Where did you come from?

42. We are visitors to this spaceship.

43. We were here many centuries ago. We come as friends.

44. Friends to whom?

45. To all who travel in this spaceship.

46. You mean of the humanoids like yourself.

47. Well, uh, yes.

48. But when we were here some time ago, we also were friends of your forebears.

49. They were called Monoids.

50. Things were very different then.

51. These strangers, they...

52. You speak of the distant past.

53. Following the recent revolution, we are now the masters.

54. I see, and the human beings?

55. They work for us. Is that not true, Yendom?

56. Yes.

57. We conquered and you obey.

58. And these strangers, they will also obey.

59. Now you will come with us.

60. - Where? - To our leader.

61. Here are the strangers, One. Wait. Look.

62. It seems that when you were here before, the Guardians of that day

63. didn't believe that you could travel through time as well as space.

64. Why have you come back?

65. The Tardis made the decision.

66. Are you telling me that you can't control your own machine?

67. What's it got to do with you?

68. Shh, child.

69. According to the history scan, you brought a strange fever

70. that killed many of our ancestors.

71. But we also helped to find a cure, didn't we? I mean, the Doctor did.

72. He thought he did.

73. And what do you mean by that, hmm?

74. You controlled the immediate impact of the fever

75. but a mutation of it developed later on that sapped the will of the humans.

76. You mean it was our fault that you took over, because of the fever?

77. In part.

78. There were other reasons?

79. The main reason was the Guardians themselves.

80. They were a simple people.

81. They actually encouraged the research

82. from which we developed our voice boxes and heat prods.

83. They were totally unprepared for the conflict when it came.

84. What happened to them?

85. Many were killed. The rest are prisoners.

86. A fact that you will shortly see for yourselves!

87. Two, take them away to the security kitchen

88. - and then call a Grand Council. - This way.

89. I trust that their return won't give you any ideas, Maharis.

90. No. I am content to obey.

91. Who told you?

92. One of the subject Guardians whispered it as he passed by the door just now.

93. - Strangers? What sort of strangers? - Human beings.

94. Well, I'm afraid the Monoids will make very short work of them.

95. Oh, no, they've been taken prisoner.

96. Well, that proves it's only a rumour.

97. Just like all the other rumours we've been hearing.

98. Look, Venussa, you know how far the Ark has travelled

99. and the Earth itself no longer exists.

100. So where could these so-called humans come from?

101. From Earth, but as it was millions of years ago.

102. Well, they travel through time.

103. That's impossible.

104. I think you've been a prisoner a little too long.

105. Oh, but it could be true, Dassuk. Oh, don't you remember the story?

106. Hundreds of years ago,

107. a doctor and a young couple came and then went away again.

108. Well, they were the first people to call this ship the Ark.

109. That's just a legend. And legends won't help us regain control of the Ark.

110. All right, Doctor, this way, and bring your friends with you.

111. Doctor?

112. You will stay in this place

113. and help with the task of preparing our food.

114. You will sleep here like the others of your kind.

115. Above all else, you must always be obedient prisoners.

116. Doctor? Did he say Doctor? Have you been here before?

117. Yes, we have.

118. But... but that's incredible! How in space could you do it?

119. If I were to tell you, young man, you wouldn't believe me.

120. No, besides, we've got far more important things to talk about.

121. We've got to find a way to get out of this place.

122. In a short while, Refusis will be ours.

123. We will land there. We will create a Monoid world.

124. But One, what about the Guardians?

125. I have a simple plan that will destroy them.

126. When we start our life on that planet,

127. it will be with no reference of any kind

128. to the time when we were secondary beings.

129. That's as it should be.

130. But at this moment we cannot be sure of what Refusis is really like,

131. or what kind of creatures the Refusians are.

132. That's true.

133. So I am sending a forward landing party ahead of us.

134. But in that case the Refusians will be forewarned.

135. I have thought of that.

136. Listen.

137. I named this ship the Ark.

138. They'd never heard the name till I used it.

139. And you brought a strange new fever and then the Doctor cured it.

140. Of course.

141. Take no notice of him, Doctor, he was born a cynic.

142. He'll probably die one unless we do something quickly about this situation.

143. Listen, are there many other Guardians like yourselves held prisoner?

144. Oh, not many. The Monoids only keep us alive

145. because they enjoy being waited on.

146. Why don't you just jump on them?

147. They're pretty slow-moving creatures, Monoids.

148. You forget they're armed and we're not.

149. And those heat prods can be pretty lethal.

150. Right, but we could take the chance and seize one.

151. Challenge them at their own game.

152. No, they're too careful. They never put them down.

153. Yes, we shall have to be pretty urgent, too. Time is running out.

154. While the others are preparing the launcher,

155. go and get the Doctor and the girl.

156. Yes, One.

157. Do you think you can do it?

158. - We must try. Otherwise... - What?

159. There'll be no future for us.

160. And our forefathers might just as well have stayed on the Earth

161. and died with it.

162. They're coming back.

163. What is this? Why aren't you working?

164. Now!

165. Back!

166. Get back.

167. You are reckless and stupid.

168. Now you have gained only one thing,

169. the death of another of your kind.

170. Doctor, you and the girl will come with me.

171. You stay here.

172. Why? Where are you taking them?

173. They will make the first landing on the planet Refusis.

174. You will be held as a security for their conduct.

175. The launcher is ready, One.

176. The Doctor, the girl, the Guardian and Two are aboard.

177. Good. Then let's hope that they succeed in their mission.

178. Out.

179. So this is Refusis? Where's the red carpet, then?

180. Perhaps the Refusians are hidden somewhere.

181. If so, we must find them.

182. Move carefully and don't forget that I am still armed.

183. Hmm.

184. Still no sign of life.

185. Perhaps the audio-space research

186. that told us of the Refusians was wrong.

187. Let us return to the launcher and send a message back to the Ark.

188. Tell them they can make their landings quite safely.

189. I'm sure they'll be extremely delighted to hear it. (CHUCKLES)

190. Yes, I bet it'll take some time to get the whole of the population down here,

191. so the sooner you get started, the better, I should think.

192. Don't worry. It may not take as long as you think.

193. What do you mean? Are you up to something?

194. (HESITANTLY) Uh, no.

195. No? But you gave yourself away, didn't you?

196. I've got a feeling when the time comes

197. you're not going to bring the Guardians down here at all, is that it?

198. - But they promised! - I don't care. I'm right, aren't I?

199. We were all wrong. This place is inhabited.

200. Come, see for yourselves.

201. It's a sort of a castle.

202. Why didn't the Refusians see the launcher arrive

203. or make any moves to stop us?

204. Shall we find out?

205. Proceed.

206. It's deserted.

207. Strange. Strange indeed.

208. There is no one in there.

209. How can you be so sure?

210. They must be hiding somewhere.

211. They are just frightened creatures.

212. I don't like it. This place is dead weird.

213. What do you mean?

214. Oh, it's just a feeling I've got.

215. I would like to see the faces of these Refusians.

216. I'm not sure I would. If they're anything like you, I've seen enough.

217. What the... - Oh, nothing.

218. I will challenge them like this!

219. Oh, no!

220. They must be in this place somewhere.

221. When they hear what I'm doing...

222. Put that thing down! That is no way to establish friendship!

223. The sooner they learn to respect us, the better.

224. Your friend is right! Put it down.

225. Where did that come from? - I think from out there.

226. No, it came from the direction of that room.

227. Where are you? Show yourself or I will smash...

228. I warned you! Put that down.

229. I think it comes from within this room.

230. Nonsense. If the Refusian seeks to challenge me, I will accept it.

231. You have been warned!

232. Thank you.

233. As your friend said, I'm here in the room with you.

234. (CHUCKLES) You won't need that now.

235. They must have landed by now.

236. We should be getting a report from Two.

237. Yes, One.

238. What was the plan you had for destroying the Guardians and this spaceship?

239. A short while after we leave,

240. they will disappear in a cloud of fragmented pieces.

241. You mean a bomb of some kind?

242. A fission device.

243. I had it made secretly and it is ready to be detonated at any time.

244. But where is it?

245. Excellent, One.

246. The last place they would think of looking.

247. That is, if they even suspect its presence before it goes off.

248. Why should they?

249. Then that will be the end of all human existence.

250. I bring you news.

251. Why does everyone back away from him?

252. Because he's one of the subject Guardians.

253. What you'd call a collaborator.

254. And what does your news amount to? How much can we trust you?

255. - But you must. It's important! - Go back to your masters.

256. - What I have to say concerns us all. - Perhaps we should listen.

257. No! He speaks with the voice of the Monoids.

258. No longer! They intend to betray us all. Even those of us who've worked for them.

259. How?

260. They plan to leave us behind when they land on Refusis.

261. Would you've expected anything else?

262. But there's more! When they go,

263. they'll leave a device behind that will destroy the Ark and everything in it.

264. - Are you sure of this? - Yes!

265. I overheard One telling another Monoid.

266. - Do you know where the device is? - No. I only heard them talking,

267. I couldn't see where One pointed.

268. Then somehow we shall have to find out.

269. And that was their aim,

270. to land there and recreate life on this planet.

271. Yes. We've known for some time of the journey

272. of the vessel you call the Ark and we welcomed it.

273. That is why we built places like this.

274. I see. Just to make us comfortable?

275. I didn't think you needed places like this for yourselves.

276. (CHUCKLES) No. Once we had a shape and form something like you.

277. Then there was a galaxy accident. A giant solar flare.

278. Now, we no longer have a being that you can see or recognise.

279. But can you see each other?

280. Not even that. Oh, we can sense one another, but that is all.

281. That is why it would have been good for Refusis to be inhabited again

282. by life and the signs of life,

283. provided that the beings who come to take our place are peaceful.

284. Child, you are worried.

285. I think I can hear them coming back.

286. We must return to the launcher.

287. We must warn One and the others

288. so that we can prepare to deal with these unseen creatures.

289. "We", meaning only the Monoids?

290. When you spoke of it before, you meant that

291. only you and only your kind would make the landings, didn't you?

292. Yendom, I do not have to account to you.

293. - I'll not let you contact them. - Yendom, stay where you are!

294. What about the Monoid?

295. Do you think he's gone back to the launcher?

296. We'll soon see.

297. Refusis to the spaceship Ark.

298. Yes, Two. Give us your report.

299. Are the landings possible?

300. The planet offers everything we need,

301. but I must warn you.

302. Listen to this carefully.

303. When we first arrived, we exited...

304. Two, are you there? Two, answer me.

305. What do we do now?

306. Nothing, my dear.

307. We shall just have to wait until the next party lands.

308. Well, what if they don't come?

309. What if they decide to find another planet?

310. Well, in that case, we shall just have to stay here.
