1. Space Station Nerva,
thi's i's the Earth High Miini'ster...Copy !req
2. The fact
that you are heariing my voiceCopy !req
3. iin a message recorded
thousands of years before the dayCopy !req
4. iin which you are now liviing,Copy !req
5. i's a sure sign...Copy !req
6. .. that our great undertakiing,
the salvation of the human race,Copy !req
7. has been rewarded with success.Copy !req
8. You have slept longerCopy !req
9. than the recorded hi'story of mankiind.Copy !req
10. And you stand now
at the dawn of a new age.Copy !req
11. You will return
to an Earth purified by flame,Copy !req
12. a world that we cannot guess at.Copy !req
13. If it be arid, you must make it flouri'sh.Copy !req
14. If it be stony, you must make it fertile.Copy !req
15. The challenge i's vast,Copy !req
16. the task enormous,Copy !req
17. but let nothiing daunt you.Copy !req
18. Sounds like a pre-match pep talk!Copy !req
19. Remember, Citizen Volunteers,Copy !req
20. that you are the proud
standard-bearers of our entire race.Copy !req
21. Of the millions that walk the world today,Copy !req
22. you are the chosen survivors.Copy !req
23. You have been entrusted
with a sacred duty -Copy !req
24. to see that human culture,Copy !req
25. human knowledge, human love and faith,Copy !req
26. shall never peri'sh from the universe.Copy !req
27. Guard what we have given you
with all your strength.Copy !req
28. And now,Copy !req
29. across the chasm of the years,Copy !req
30. I send you the prayers and hopesCopy !req
31. of the entire world.Copy !req
32. Godspeed you to a safe landiing.Copy !req
33. I bet that did your female
chauvinist heart a power of good!Copy !req
34. Why?Copy !req
35. Well, fancy a member of the fair sex
being top of the totem pole!Copy !req
36. Vira! Vira!Copy !req
37. Yes, Commander?Copy !req
38. Vira, hear me. Thi's i's an order.Copy !req
39. Expedite revivification.Copy !req
40. Commence maiin phase now.Copy !req
41. But, Noah, the safety checks...Copy !req
42. Ignore safety checks!Copy !req
43. We...Copy !req
44. you...Copy !req
45. .. are in great danger...Copy !req
46. Get our...Copy !req
47. .. your people to the Earth before...Copy !req
48. Noah?Copy !req
49. .. before... the Wirrn...Copy !req
50. Vira, take command!Copy !req
51. Hear me! You take command!Copy !req
52. What has happened?Copy !req
53. Commander, are you there?Copy !req
54. The Wirrn are here...Copy !req
55. They will..Copy !req
56. We shall absorb the humans...Copy !req
57. The Earth shall be ours!Copy !req
58. Noah! Noah!Copy !req
59. Vira...Copy !req
60. Vira...Copy !req
61. there's no time...Copy !req
62. They're...Copy !req
63. in my mind...Copy !req
64. getting stronger...Copy !req
65. Libri is dead...Copy !req
66. You will all die...Copy !req
67. Must save our people...Copy !req
68. You must!Copy !req
69. Noah!Copy !req
70. The chap sounds in a bad way.Copy !req
71. What did he mean - they're in his mind?Copy !req
72. Absorb?Copy !req
73. "We shall absorb the humans"?Copy !req
74. Endoparasitism?Copy !req
75. He talks to himself sometimesCopy !req
76. because he's the only one who
understands what he's talking about.Copy !req
77. If the Wirrn can do that, we've no chance at all!Copy !req
78. Complete physical absorption.Copy !req
79. Of us?Copy !req
80. They'll literally eat us alive.Copy !req
81. Vira, I must talk with Noah.Copy !req
82. Come with me. He trusts you.Copy !req
83. My duty is to supervise the revivification.Copy !req
84. No! Noah passed command to you.Copy !req
85. - Your duties have been widened.
- What is your intention?Copy !req
86. To find out exactly what we're facing.Copy !req
87. And only Noah knows that.Copy !req
88. I can't leave until the last of
our technical section have awakened.Copy !req
89. Harry can handle that. Can't you, Harry?Copy !req
90. - Well, I...
- You've watched Vira.Copy !req
91. - You know the procedure.
- Yes, I...Copy !req
92. One gram of scropholine
when the neural register enters the red zone.Copy !req
93. - Right...
- He'll be all right.Copy !req
94. The injection must be over the pectoralis major.Copy !req
95. - That I do understand.
- Good luck!Copy !req
96. And, Sarah, you stay and help Harry.Copy !req
97. Yes, come along, Nurse Smith.Copy !req
98. See? This chap's in the red zone.Copy !req
99. Hey, there's another one seems to be awake here.Copy !req
100. Well, after 10,000 years,
he can't be in that much of a hurry.Copy !req
101. I hope you know what you're doing!Copy !req
102. Yes. Dead simple. Medicine by numbers.Copy !req
103. Oh, yes! Dead simple!Copy !req
104. Just a question of fixing
a fresh ampoule thing into here.Copy !req
105. Keep back! Don't touch me!Copy !req
106. - Noah!
- Keep back, I said!Copy !req
107. Tell us one thing. How much time do we have?Copy !req
108. Time?Copy !req
109. Before the Wirrn reach their adult form?Copy !req
110. It feels near... very near...Copy !req
111. The tearing free and then
the great blackness rushing through...Copy !req
112. Noah and I were pair-bonded for the new life.Copy !req
113. Let's go back.Copy !req
114. Dune and Libri?Copy !req
115. And Noah?Copy !req
116. I'm sorry. It must be a terrible shock for you.Copy !req
117. So there's just two of us to check the ship?Copy !req
118. - And Vira. She's taken command.
- Where is she?Copy !req
119. She's gone with the Doctor.
They're trying to contact Noah.Copy !req
120. There's been a snitch-up!Copy !req
121. Didn't I tell you, Lycett?Copy !req
122. 5,000 years ago, I said there'd be a snitch-up!Copy !req
123. - 10,000!
- Oh, beautiful!Copy !req
124. We should have taken our chanceCopy !req
125. and gone into the thermic shelters!
We'd be happily dead!Copy !req
126. What killed them? Their lungs, was it?Copy !req
127. Hmm?Copy !req
128. Dune and Libri? We were told
our lung tissue might atrophy.Copy !req
129. - Well, no...
- Something got in here.Copy !req
130. Yes... Some sort of space creature.Copy !req
131. It cut through your alarm clock system.Copy !req
132. - What?
- Look.Copy !req
133. Oh, it's OK - it's dead.Copy !req
134. But, unfortunately,
its larvae are still very much alive!Copy !req
135. - Vira!
- Vira, it's gone wrong!Copy !req
136. Welcome, Lycett. Rogin.Copy !req
137. You feel well?Copy !req
138. Yes... Commander.Copy !req
139. What are we going to do with it?Copy !req
140. How much anatomy do you remember?Copy !req
141. Quite a lot, I think.Copy !req
142. But you need a blooming entomologist!Copy !req
143. We need to find its weaknesses,
and quickly.Copy !req
144. - Can we help?
- Not at the moment, thank you.Copy !req
145. Then, we will commence
the main phase. Lycett, Rogin.Copy !req
146. What was that she said?Copy !req
147. They're going to start the main phase.Copy !req
148. Carry on with that thoracic incision.
Not too deep.Copy !req
149. - But the safety checks?
- We shall over-ride them.Copy !req
150. - Why?
- We can't!Copy !req
151. That is my decision. Take your operating stations.Copy !req
152. Vira, the main phase must wait.Copy !req
153. Noah said we should expedite
the revivification programCopy !req
154. - and get our people to work.
- He was wrong.Copy !req
155. How long would it take?Copy !req
156. 72 hours for complete revivification.Copy !req
157. - Another 24 to evacuate the Ark.
- Four whole days?Copy !req
158. At the rate the Wirrn are developing,Copy !req
159. they'll have pupated to imago long before.Copy !req
160. - We must try!
- You can't do it!Copy !req
161. The Ark will be crawling
with those creatures within hours!Copy !req
162. Doctor, the fate of all humanityCopy !req
163. might be decided within the next few hours!Copy !req
164. Vira, if you fail, your people
will die in pain and fear.Copy !req
165. If I fail, they'll die anyway,Copy !req
166. but only the six of us
will know anything about it.Copy !req
167. You have an alternative plan?Copy !req
168. Between the larval and the imago forms,Copy !req
169. there must be a pupal stage.Copy !req
170. Now, the Wirrn will be dormant
and defenseless.Copy !req
171. If we can find their weaknesses...Copy !req
172. We might destroy them?Copy !req
173. Yes.Copy !req
174. - Very well Stand down.
- Good.Copy !req
175. There's a power flutter in Section 4,
Commander.Copy !req
176. What does that indicate?Copy !req
177. External fault. Shall I check the stacks?Copy !req
178. No! The larvae have taken over
the infrastructure.Copy !req
179. They seem to need solar radiation.Copy !req
180. We should have stayed on Earth, Lycett!Copy !req
181. I liked the Earth! I like heat!Copy !req
182. Curious lung structure, Doctor - look at it.Copy !req
183. Yes, fascinating. A superb adaptation.Copy !req
184. What is it?Copy !req
185. Obviously, the creature's lungs
recycle the wastes,Copy !req
186. almost certainly by enzymes.Copy !req
187. Quite wonderful. Carbon dioxide back to oxygen.Copy !req
188. You mean the way plants make oxygen?Copy !req
189. Exactly right.Copy !req
190. It must live in space,Copy !req
191. probably just occasionally
visiting a planetary atmosphereCopy !req
192. for food and oxygen,Copy !req
193. the way a whale rises from the ocean.Copy !req
194. Judging by the size of his mandibles,
this chap doesn't live on plankton!Copy !req
195. Noah spoke of a great blackness...Copy !req
196. .. rushing in...Copy !req
197. He meant space, but how did he know?Copy !req
198. He now has the race memory of a Wirrn.Copy !req
199. Symbiotic atavism, to be precise.Copy !req
200. I'm going to need your help now, Vira.Copy !req
201. Do you have any spare extension leads, Rogin?Copy !req
202. - Yes.
- Hurry! Fetch them!Copy !req
203. What are you going to do, Doctor?Copy !req
204. A little experiment. Circuit display, Lycett.Copy !req
205. It's forbidden to alter those circuits.Copy !req
206. I need the neural cortex amplifier.
Not for long - don't worry.Copy !req
207. Right, switch on the video circuit, Lycett.Copy !req
208. It'll take a little time to warm up.Copy !req
209. Doctor, what are you trying to do?Copy !req
210. Latent neural impressions can be revived.Copy !req
211. - Really?
- Yes.Copy !req
212. I've never heard of that!Copy !req
213. Advanced technology.Copy !req
214. Gypsies used to believe that the eye
retained its last image after death.Copy !req
215. Not so far out.Copy !req
216. No...Copy !req
217. It's not going to work.Copy !req
218. Switch off, Lycett.Copy !req
219. Now what?Copy !req
220. It SHOULD work!Copy !req
221. The coil isn't giving a strong enough stimulus.Copy !req
222. I'll have to link in my own cerebral cortex.
That's the only thing.Copy !req
223. That is highly dangerous!Copy !req
224. I know. Two more leads, Rogin.Copy !req
225. - It could burn out a living brain!
- I agree.Copy !req
226. An ordinary brain. But mine is exceptional.Copy !req
227. I cannot permit it! The shock might kill you.Copy !req
228. I think not. Unless, of course,
the experiment was interrupted.Copy !req
229. That could be dangerous.Copy !req
230. - Do you have to do it?
- Why take the risk?Copy !req
231. If I find what killed that creature,Copy !req
232. we might have a chance of fighting
the Wirrn. That's our only hope.Copy !req
233. Yes, but do you have to be...?Copy !req
234. It's not just our... existence that's at stake, Sarah!Copy !req
235. It's the entire human race.Copy !req
236. It may be irrational of me,Copy !req
237. but human beings are quite my favorite species.Copy !req
238. Vira...Copy !req
239. - Yes, Doctor?
- Take this.Copy !req
240. Don't hesitate to use it if anything goes wrong.Copy !req
241. - You won't have much time.
- What do you mean?Copy !req
242. Switch on, Lycett.Copy !req
243. Lycett!Copy !req
244. Doctor!Copy !req
245. He's joining his mind to the Wirrn!Copy !req
246. He could remain a part of it for ever!Copy !req
247. Look! It's working!Copy !req
248. What was that?Copy !req
249. We'd better look.Copy !req
250. Over here!Copy !req
251. Case-hardened diranium - bent like tin!Copy !req
252. Look out! Behind you!Copy !req
253. Shut the door! Shut the door!Copy !req
254. What's going...?Copy !req
255. Get out, man! Get out!Copy !req
256. They've killed Lycett!Copy !req
257. There's some sort of huge grub in there!Copy !req
258. - Stop the experiment!
- You'll kill him!Copy !req
259. The armory, Rogin! Get the fission guns!Copy !req
260. - Right!
- I'll come with you!Copy !req
261. Hurry, Rogin!Copy !req
262. That door won't hold much longer!Copy !req
263. Dune!Copy !req
264. Fools! Human fools!Copy !req
265. Help me with him, Vira!Copy !req
266. Wait! Come away!Copy !req
267. Wirrn...Copy !req
268. - Wirrn...
- Doctor...Copy !req
269. - Wirrn!
- Doctor! Doctor!Copy !req
270. No, you can't! I won't let you!Copy !req
271. Can't what? Is it time to get up?Copy !req
272. Doctor, you're going to be all right!Copy !req
273. Is that noise in my head?Copy !req
274. Doctor, come back!Copy !req
275. Doctor, don't!Copy !req
276. Doctor! Doctor!Copy !req
277. Aim lower!Copy !req
278. - It's gone back through the grille.
- That was a close one!Copy !req
279. - You all right, Sarah?
- Yes.Copy !req
280. - Doctor?
- Why?Copy !req
281. Why have they gone on to the attack?Copy !req
282. They want to destroy us.Copy !req
283. But they've only to wait.Copy !req
284. In their adult form,
they'll be a thousand times deadlier.Copy !req
285. - Fission guns will have no effect.
- How many of them will there be?Copy !req
286. At a hatching? A hundred...Copy !req
287. A hundred? We won't stand a chance!
How can we fight a hundred of those?Copy !req
288. Electricity!Copy !req
289. Only by electricity!
That's the one thing I found out!Copy !req
290. - Electricity?
- Yes...Copy !req
291. The auto-guard killed the queen -
half a million volts.Copy !req
292. - We found the queen in the cupboard!
- Amazing willpower!Copy !req
293. I could feel it struggling against
death until its task was done.Copy !req
294. Rogin, is there any way
we can electrify the infrastructure?Copy !req
295. Not from here, Doctor. We'd have to
run cables from the Control Center.Copy !req
296. Control Center? Right, let's go!Copy !req
297. - You can't go that way, Doctor.
- Noah's waiting out there.Copy !req
298. Put one foot inside the transom
and you're dead!Copy !req
299. Yes... I was forgetting Noah's extra mobility.Copy !req
300. We are trapped.Copy !req
301. The Wirrn are using Dune's knowledge
of the Ark.Copy !req
302. Perhaps there was something he didn't know.Copy !req
303. Dune was first tech. He knew it all!Copy !req
304. He helped design the systems.Copy !req
305. Nobody knows it all!Copy !req
306. Perhaps he's forgotten
that these transmats are reversible!Copy !req
307. - That's clever!
- Isn't it?Copy !req
308. And as you appreciate it, Rogin, you can go first!Copy !req
309. I'll give you a hand!Copy !req
310. Oh, well..Copy !req
311. I never liked it here anyway!Copy !req
312. You next, Harry!Copy !req
313. I say!Copy !req
314. Are you all right?Copy !req
315. What a marvelous way to travel!Copy !req
316. It always sets my teeth on edge!Copy !req
317. That was a power drain.Copy !req
318. Hello, Control Center?Copy !req
319. Hello, Doctor.
We've got a power failure.Copy !req
320. It's general, then. Do you have a fault reading?Copy !req
321. Section 4...Copy !req
322. That's the secondary stack.Copy !req
323. There's no power...Copy !req
324. All power systems are self-repairing.Copy !req
325. Malicious damage excluded.Copy !req
326. Oh, well, obviously, I am not going anywhere!Copy !req
327. Help me, Doctor.Copy !req
328. The oxygen pumps have stopped.Copy !req
329. Of course! In their pupal stage,
the Wirrn don't need oxygen.Copy !req
330. An easy way of killing us.Copy !req
331. Well, suffocation
is not the most unpleasant death!Copy !req
332. What? We're not finished yet!Copy !req
333. - You two stay here.
- Where are you going?Copy !req
334. The infrastructure.Copy !req
335. If they've entered the pupal stage,
they'll be dormant.Copy !req
336. Could be our chance to get down there
and switch the power back on.Copy !req
337. - You're forgetting Noah.
- No, I'm not.Copy !req
338. I think his job's done now.
He'll be metamorphosing, too.Copy !req
