Doctor Who 11x6

1. Happy birthday!

2. I said no fuss.

3. You have to celebrate your birthday, Nani.

4. I was the first woman married in Pakistan.

5. Now, look at me, in a wheelchair,

6. and being fed shop-bought cake.

7. That's a nice cake.

8. "The first woman married in Pakistan," Did you know this?

9. And I was the first Muslim woman

10. to work in a textile mill in South Yorkshire.

11. Granddad taking you dancing every Wednesday night.

12. Oh!

13. I so miss that man.

14. Now, I want to give you these things before it's too late.

15. Najia, these are some letters

16. your father wrote to me when he was away.

17. Don't read the filthy bits.

18. Sonya, this is a present your grandfather gave me.

19. I can't remember why, but it's nice.

20. And, now, Yasmin, my favourite granddaughter.

21. What? Mummy, what? I've told you about that.

22. I want you to have this.

23. Thank you. Was it Granddad's?

24. I can get it fixed, if you like.

25. It must never be fixed.

26. Why not?

27. I don't want to talk about it any more.

28. Nani, please.

29. You won't understand.

30. I have such stories I could tell you.

31. And we want to hear them, really.

32. If you don't tell us, we won't know.

33. Your life's our heritage.

34. When you're older, maybe.

35. I know what you're asking,

36. but family history and time travel, very tricky.

37. Just for an hour.

38. See her from a distance.

39. What's the point in having a mate with a time machine if you can't

40. nip back and see your gran when she was younger?

41. Erm...

42. Have you got a time or place?

43. I know she lived in Lahore in the '50s.

44. - But other than that... - I mean, I could.

45. I shouldn't.

46. Unless... No. Too unpredictable.

47. - Could what? - It's a risk.

48. Oh, like none of our other trips have ever been risky.

49. I have apologised for the death-eye turtle army. Profusely.

50. I suppose I could loop this into the TARDIS' telepathic circuits.

51. This thing's telepathic, too?

52. Don't call her a thing, Graham.

53. And, yes, she does have telepathic navigation, sort of.

54. Shorthand for a very complicated process which is way beyond your understanding.

55. Ta very much. I only hang around here to be insulted.

56. Any object amasses all sorts

57. of fragmentary spatio-temporal particles through its life.

58. The TARDIS can read it like date stamps.

59. What do you two reckon?

60. Oh, yeah, I love it. Pakistan.

61. Never been there before. Another one off the bucket list.

62. As long as there's no killer turtles.

63. Yeah, I'm well up for it.

64. Hmm. One hour. No...

65. - Interfering. - ... interfering.

66. Go on. You know you can do it.

67. Bit of a punt.

68. Whoa! Nice!

69. I thought Lahore was a city. This ain't a city.

70. TARDIS readings are all over the shop.

71. Looks pretty, northern Punjab.

72. Hey, get off the road!

73. Really sorry. Bit of a wobble.

74. What just happened?

75. Not sure. But I didn't like it at all.

76. Sorry, mate, er, we're just getting our bearings.

77. We're not from around here.

78. Yeah, no kidding.

79. Your Punjabi's not bad for foreigners, though.

80. You need to be careful.

81. These roads aren't safe right now.

82. We're actually looking for a woman

83. by the name of Umbreen.

84. Right, Umbreen.

85. What for?

86. - We're family. - We're friends.

87. Family friends.

88. We're on our way to say hello. Bit of a surprise.

89. But we agreed...

90. Er, okay, get in.

91. - Okay? - Yeah.

92. Thank you.

93. You all right?

94. I think so. Probably.

95. I don't know.

96. Like I intercepted something. In my brain.

97. So, what, you're a flower merchant?

98. Er, pretty much, right now.

99. Why isn't it safe on the roads?

100. Running transport now, Prem?

101. Want a ride with us, Sadhu?

102. I can take one more.

103. What's wrong with your feet?

104. You young people,

105. always such a rush.

106. Walking served me all my life.

107. I'll be there, don't you worry.

108. We'll be ready.

109. I'm late. Umbreen's gonna kill me.

110. You're late!

111. And who are they?

112. They're your family, Umbreen.

113. What?

114. Oh, my God.

115. You're Umbreen.

116. You look amazing.

117. What are you doing here?

118. I live here.

119. On a farm?

120. But I thought...

121. It doesn't matter. I'm so happy to see you.

122. So, Yaz, you should probably explain who we are.

123. Sorry, yeah. Excited.

124. Uncle Malik.

125. You know Uncle Malik.

126. There are loads of Uncle Maliks.

127. Exactly. Well,

128. the one from about 15 valleys over,

129. I'm that Uncle Malik's third cousin's younger sister, Yaz.

130. And these are my friends, Ryan, Graham, and the Doctor.

131. - Hi. - Hello.

132. All the way from England.

133. You might want to keep that to yourself right now.

134. - Right. - What?

135. It's just, we weren't expecting you, or anyone.

136. Uncle Malik's not coming to the wedding as well, is he?

137. - There's a wedding? - Which is why we're here.

138. Bringing wedding best wishes.

139. Erm, when... When's the big day again?

140. - Tomorrow. - Amazing.

141. I can't wait to meet the groom.

142. You already have.

143. Remember me? Car, flowers?

144. - Marrying Umbreen. - No.

145. You can't be.

146. - You're not my... - A wedding in the Punjab. Bring it on.

147. I love a wedding. Don't we, boys?

148. Oh, yeah, I can go to a wedding every day if I could. Yeah.

149. Hey, do you need a singer? I know all the classics.

150. - Well, latest hits to you lot. - Er, don't ever let him sing.

151. We won't be staying long anyway.

152. Just wanted to convey our best wishes

153. and then head off.

154. Hi, I thought I saw some people in the cart.

155. Sorry about his driving.

156. My baby brother thinks he can do everything better than me.

157. I'm Manish.

158. Come, all of you. It's being announced!

159. Coming, Mum.

160. Who are they?

161. What's happening?

162. Everyone's waiting for the announcement.

163. But I've got advanced information.

164. Okay.

165. Number one,

166. the man Umbreen is about to marry is not my granddad.

167. - Defo? Totally sure? - Yes.

168. For starters, Prem's a Hindu name.

169. We're Muslim.

170. And he doesn't look anything like the photos. It's not him.

171. And that Umbreen, she's your nan, right?

172. Yeah, she does look like the photo.

173. But Prem's wearing the watch your nani gave you in the future.

174. So what, she had a secret Hindu first husband?

175. Er, Doc, I reckon an hour's nearly up, mate.

176. Yeah.

177. We can't go. I came here for answers.

178. All I've got is more questions.

179. I knew this would happen.

180. Can anyone help me with this?

181. I'll help. I'm Yaz.

182. Great, thanks, Yaz.

183. Big moment. You won't forget this in a hurry.

184. You're right there.

185. I shouldn't have come.

186. I'm too nice.

187. This is what happens when you try to be nice.

188. Who wants to know what they're listening to in there?

189. - Yup. - Yup.

190. After much delay

191. and amid escalating communal violence,

192. Lord Mountbatten has finally released the specific details

193. of the border which will separate the two countries.

194. What borders are they talking about?

195. Pakistan.

196. Today, India's officially cut into pieces.

197. It's the 17th of August.

198. And still, you want to go ahead?

199. Nothing changes, Mum. We knew this was coming.

200. Sorry, I don't mean to sound stupid, what year is it, exactly?

201. Same year you have in England, 1947.

202. Partition.

203. We're in the middle of the partition of India.

204. Three, two, one.

205. Is it for the celebrations?

206. Big celebrations. Welcome to the border.

207. - Manish. - Where India ends and our future begins.

208. What are you doing?

209. Yaz, hi.

210. Quick sidebar, August, 1947, Partition.

211. The borders have just been announced.

212. India. Pakistan.

213. It's not just the land that gets divided.

214. Rioting in the cities.

215. Tens of millions of people about to be displaced.

216. More than a million about to die.

217. Doc, meanwhile, her Nan's about to get married, but not to her Granddad.

218. I'm thinking that hour's well up, now.

219. You can't know the borders. It's only just been announced!

220. The maps were leaked weeks ago. I got one from my sources.

221. Your sources must be wrong, because you've just put my house in Pakistan.

222. With the other Muslims.

223. But you get a fresh start.

224. Manish, you need to slow down.

225. Pakistan is somewhere for Muslims if they want to go.

226. I'm not saying you have to go,

227. but Pakistan is being created for Muslims.

228. Hindus have India, we both feel safe.

229. Don't reduce it to that, brother. It's not that simple.

230. But I get you have a hard decision if you're married.

231. The land belongs to everyone, has done for centuries.

232. One day doesn't change that.

233. I love you, brother, but you're wrong.

234. Look, demons!

235. I told you this would happen. I told you these days were cursed!

236. It's gone!

237. Not far. We'll deal with this. Come on.

238. Find the signal. They didn't go far.

239. Stay away.

240. - Did I get them? - I don't think so.

241. They move faster than your bullet.

242. - What were they? - Bhakti!

243. They killed him.

244. He was your man on the road.

245. He's a holy man. A sadhu.

246. Everyone knows him as Bhakti.

247. Umbreen and I asked him to bless our marriage.

248. - Why would they kill him? - I don't know.

249. But what I also don't understand is,

250. you just saw something not of this world and you took it right in your stride.

251. Why's that, Prem?

252. I've seen them before.

253. Where have you seen them before?

254. Who are you?

255. You say you're Umbreen's family, but clearly you're not.

256. And you ran at those demons like you didn't care.

257. I don't think they're demons.

258. Why should I trust what you think?

259. Because we've got experience with impossible creatures

260. and because we ask questions like, "What is this substance on his body?"

261. And things are getting even weirder.

262. You think that's what they used to kill him?

263. Some sort of fast-dissolving

264. poisonous dust?

265. It doesn't read like he was poisoned.

266. I don't understand.

267. So, what are we going to tell the others back there?

268. They don't have to know.

269. Hasna already thinks the marriage is cursed.

270. Umbreen doesn't need anything else to worry about, and Manish,

271. who knows what he thinks these days.

272. I was away from him for too long. Fighting in the war.

273. By the time I got back, Manish wasn't my baby brother any more.

274. People grow up.

275. We all have to find our own way.

276. Some of us need more guidance than others.

277. This fella needs to be laid to rest.

278. Why don't we go and get the others to help,

279. but not let on what happened.

280. Oh accordion waves.

281. Which could mean a dormant octonic engine nearby.

282. What's she saying?

283. If I had to guess, I think we're going demon hunting.

284. Gold star for Ryan.

285. Oh, wait. Was I awarding points?

286. I forgot about the points!

287. I'm coming with you.

288. - No. - I know this forest.

289. I can help.

290. Okay. Yaz!

291. Be careful what you say back there.

292. The wrong word in the wrong moment,

293. you can interfere yourself out of existence. Do you understand?

294. You know there are aliens here, right?

295. In the Punjab during Partition. And you're worried about me being gobby?

296. Tread softly.

297. You're treading on your own history.

298. I like this.

299. Traipsing through the forest, alongside the British, looking for the enemy.

300. I've done enough of that.

301. Although, maybe you're my enemy now,

302. for the mess you just made of my country.

303. Carving it up, slapdash, in six weeks.

304. Gonna run off home now, are you?

305. I'll make a note of your thoughts and pass 'em on to Mountbatten

306. if I ever bump into him again.

307. These demon things, you've seen them before,

308. or do you reckon they're here because of the Partition?

309. I don't know. I need to find out.

310. Then he's got one up on you if he's seen them before you.

311. What's your demon-tracker saying?

312. It's saying...

313. Hello.

314. What is that?

315. It seems like a Transmat

316. doorway.

317. Nice. That was cool.

318. What. Just. Happened?

319. We were in the forest, and now we're...

320. Really not.

321. Short answer, we got dragged through a doorway,

322. - into... - A demon's lair.

323. I wouldn't put it quite like that, but you're getting the gist.

324. Spaceship, though, right?

325. I can't get a read on anything.

326. It's beautiful.

327. Yeah, you're right. It really is.

328. They can surprise you, demons.

329. Hey, do you think they're here?

330. I'm not getting any life signals.

331. Maybe they're out shopping.

332. Catching a movie.

333. Bowling. Some races like bowling.

334. I'm talking to confront my latent worry.

335. I know. I got that now.

336. Oh, come on! One of these things must unlock it.

337. Hey, that worked.

338. - What is it? - Exactly what I wanted.

339. Craft spec, species, data, bio-ID.

340. What?

341. What have you seen, Doctor?

342. This is a Thijarian hive.

343. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

344. Thijarians are assassins.

345. Right, so that's basically a bad thing, then.

346. I've heard about them. Never come across them.

347. They're one of the ancient species,

348. evolved themselves into the deadliest assassins in the known universe.

349. - He was their target. - Why, though?

350. Why would the Thijarians target a holy man in the 1940s?

351. Wait, you said you'd seen them before, where?

352. I don't want to talk about that.

353. It could be important.

354. I don't want any of this.

355. I'm supposed to be married tomorrow.

356. Mate, the Doctor's right.

357. We can help you, but you have to trust us.

358. Where did you see them?

359. In Singapore.

360. Our section had found a boat to escape on.

361. But I'd signed up with Kunal.

362. I wasn't going to leave without him at my side.

363. Kunal!

364. Kunal?

365. That's where I saw the demons.

366. Standing over my older brother's dead body.

367. I lost them in the haze as the evacuation sounded.

368. Left his body there.

369. I couldn't save him.

370. Why are they here?

371. How did we bring demons on ourselves?

372. I don't know, but we'll find out.

373. And we'll protect you. All of you.

374. What if you can't?

375. Oh, er, hey, hey. Look at this. Erm...

376. That was the stuff that was on the holy man's body.

377. The stuff that they used to kill him.

378. Oh, taking a look at that.

379. Over keen, should've thought about that Uh...

380. They're here!

381. You have desecrated the hive.

382. The hive is sacred.

383. Do you have to push your words into our heads like that?

384. Because it really hurts.

385. And, no, we haven't, actually, it's you who are desecrating this planet.

386. I know who you are, I know what you do, and it's not happening here.

387. Leave these people alone. They're under my protection now.

388. You cannot prevent this.

389. You just watch me.

390. Get out of the forest!

391. What?

392. Miniaturised Transmat locks. Clever.

393. Also, confiscated.

394. See ya!

395. - What just happened? - No idea.

396. But the Doctor said, "Get out of the forest." Come on.

397. And another one!

398. Did you know him well?

399. Bhakti taught me the scriptures. How did he die?

400. - We're not exactly sure. - Where's Prem?

401. And your other friends?

402. Seeing if they can find out any more about what happened.

403. Your family, Manish,

404. cursed.

405. - Mum! - This is another terrible omen for you.

406. Thanks for that.

407. I'll get the cart, bring his body back.

408. I'll help you prepare the burial

409. and pray for your family.

410. I don't know what to do

411. Bhakti had agreed to marry us.

412. And not many would agree to a Hindu marrying a Muslim right now.

413. Then you can't go ahead with marrying Prem.

414. You think I'd give up that easily?

415. I've seen a war take our young,

416. and drought take our old and weak.

417. Now, men without a clue are imposing a border like a crack through my country.

418. Prem is the one certain thing in my life.

419. This must be scrambling your head.

420. Just a bit.

421. I thought I knew my nan's story.

422. She inspired me.

423. But if this is true, if this is her life,

424. then she lied to me.

425. Yeah, but maybe she just didn't want to tell you everything, you know?

426. Woman's allowed to have secrets, even from her granddaughter.

427. And you've got to remember, Yaz, that girl in there,

428. she ain't your nan yet.

429. It's only later she'll decide how to tell it.

430. And I honestly don't know whether any of us know the real truth

431. of our own lives.

432. Because we're too busy living them from the inside.

433. So just enjoy, Yaz.

434. Live this moment and figure it out later.

435. - Easier said then done. - No, no, I get that, but...

436. Look at us.

437. The things we're doing with the Doc.

438. We're in 1947.

439. - With me nan. - Yeah.

440. No one will ever believe us.

441. - Especially me nan. - Exactly.

442. We've lost the doctor!

443. Mayday! Red alert!

444. - Sounds like trouble. - Red alert!

445. It must be the Doc.

446. - We've lost the Doctor! - She was with us and then gone!

447. There she is!

448. - Get to the barn! - What?

449. Get to the barn, right now!

450. - What are you... - Shh.

451. No, stay out!

452. You disrupt our work.

453. Good. Now, who are you here for?

454. We don't answer to you.

455. You must leave, or we will stand over your corpses.

456. Nothing like getting to the point.

457. Is it me? Are you here to kill me?

458. Take me and promise to leave the others.

459. Prem, no, not going to happen.

460. Both of you, I'm dealing with this.

461. I've just nicked four of your Transmat locks out of the forest.

462. Good trick, by the way.

463. Forcing people back, away from the boundary. Clever.

464. So clever, I'm using it myself, against you,

465. locking you out of this farm.

466. You killed the demons.

467. No, just exiled them for now.

468. I made a temporary Transmat barrier around the farm.

469. I'm hoping it will keep them out for the next few hours.

470. Enough time for you to get married and for us to keep everyone safe.

471. Are you serious, after what's just happened?

472. Can't you see what's happening? You bring demons to life.

473. I don't think they're demons.

474. Well, I do. I'm with Manish.

475. How many hours?

476. Twelve. Eighteen at a push. I can't be sure.

477. Tonight, we celebrate and we marry first thing.

478. And then if we have to fight them, we will.

479. Come on.

480. Still not interfering, are we?

481. Oi! The alien assassins started it.

482. We can't leave now.

483. If something happens to Umbreen, your whole timeline could be erased.

484. No Yaz! We can't have a universe with no Yaz.

485. Now, whatever's in here,

486. might tell us more.

487. Nobody breathe too deeply.

488. Whoa!

489. It's overloaded my sonic! Too many inputs.

490. That's never happened before. Oh, think.

491. Have to go analogue.

492. I need oil, water, tree bark,

493. a sauce pan, nine containers, an old newspaper, a touch of ox spit,

494. a chicken poo, and a biscuit.

495. - Bagsy not chicken poo. - Why a biscuit?

496. I love biscuits!

497. I am never, ever getting spit from an ox ever again,

498. no matter how much you need it.

499. The ox took a bit of a shine to him.

500. - So, what is it, then? - Science.

501. Should break the sample down. Give us more information.

502. Only take a couple of hours.

503. Are you coming or not?

504. What's that?

505. Part of my, er, demon-repellent.

506. - That better be gone by tomorrow. - Definitely.

507. So, come on, women with me and Mum,

508. men over at Prem's house.

509. This is the best thing ever!

510. Never did this when I was a man!

511. Doctor, you and your jokes.

512. Yeah, that's right.

513. My references to body and gender regeneration are all in jest.

514. I'm such a comedian.

515. Umbreen doesn't think these are my best work.

516. But, maybe if you had to prepare a body this morning,

517. you wouldn't draw so well either.

518. So, how long have you known Prem?

519. Our whole lives.

520. We grew up here together.

521. Our families have worked the land alongside each other for generations.

522. I can't believe it's happening.

523. I waited so long for him.

524. All the time he was away fighting,

525. I was terrified he wouldn't come home.

526. But, he did.

527. And now I see my life mapped out with him.

528. Our home, here.

529. If they let us stay.

530. Nobody cares what we do here, Mum.

531. - It's not a city. - I stood outside earlier.

532. I heard gangs in the distance.

533. Motor vehicles, gunshots.

534. It's a long way away.

535. It's not too late.

536. I can still find you a good Muslim man.

537. Are you joking right now?

538. Look at the misery that follows him.

539. You don't even have a priest.

540. What sort of a respectable wedding will it be?

541. I don't care about traditions!

542. I don't care about respectable...

543. Wait. You're a doctor, right?

544. That's respectable

545. You could marry us.

546. Don't be ridiculous!

547. - I suppose I could. - No.

548. - Doctor! - I haven't

549. officiated a wedding since Einstein's.

550. His parents didn't approve either.

551. Non-denominational, though.

552. If your father were alive,

553. he'd die on the spot.

554. Everyone is saying it's a new future.

555. We make our own traditions now.

556. You're on.

557. I thought we were not getting involved.

558. Only a teensy bit.

559. Bust.

560. Again.

561. You're cleaning me out, little brother.

562. You know what they say though, Prem.

563. Unlucky at cards, lucky in love.

564. - You think he's lucky? - Yeah.

565. - I think he's lost his mind. - Hey, mate, not on his stag night.

566. You'll have to forgive him.

567. Spends too much time reading pamphlets.

568. Listening to angry men on the radio.

569. Do you love me, Prem?

570. Of course I love you.

571. Even if sometimes I don't recognise the brother I left behind.

572. Kunal would have understood.

573. He said he was only fighting for you lot so he could get rid of you.

574. And now it's happening.

575. Don't marry tomorrow.

576. - Umbreen's a good woman. - You can't live together here.

577. India's not her home, now.

578. India's a home to all of us.

579. We didn't change when a line was drawn.

580. But we did.

581. I need air.

582. She's going to officiate knowing he's not my granddad.

583. Well, if Manish has anything to do with it,

584. there won't be anything to officiate.

585. And these alien assassins, we still don't know who they come for.

586. What happens here?

587. Why did she never tell her family about any of this?

588. This just is the densest organic material that you can imagine.

589. It's sort of everything.

590. Carbon, phosphorous, oxygen, nitrogen,

591. sulphur, calcium.

592. Billions of DNA fragments and loads more.

593. They're breaking the Transmat locks!

594. Doctor!

595. So, what?

596. Is it me?

597. You've come to assassinate me?

598. - We are not assassins. - Firstly,

599. I much prefer it when you're not making the threatening sound.

600. So thanks for that, at least.

601. Secondly, don't lie to me.

602. I know the stories of the assassins of Thijar.

603. - We have changed. - What?

604. Changed how?

605. Our past is no more.

606. We are no longer assassins.

607. Now, we are witnesses.

608. I don't understand.

609. We honour the lost, as we cannot honour our own.

610. No. Still not with you.

611. As the assassins hunted,

612. the Thijarian world was destroyed.

613. We returned to find nothing.

614. This is all that remains of our home.

615. Our people.

616. Every ancestor.

617. All one dust.

618. I didn't know.

619. I'm so sorry.

620. They died unwitnessed, unsaved.

621. We were too late to grieve or honour them.

622. But we who returned gave up 100 generations to sift,

623. to remember the lost dead. The unmourned.

624. In time, it was all we knew.

625. And now we travel beyond, seeking

626. the unacknowledged dead across all of time and space.

627. This is now the Thijarian mission.

628. To bear witness to those alone.

629. To see. To bear pain.

630. Honour life as it passes.

631. As each one passes, we commemorate union.

632. That's what Prem saw you do to Kunal, what you were doing to the holy man.

633. But why here? Why now?

634. Millions will perish,

635. unseen, unknown, in the days to come here.

636. The casualties of Partition.

637. We read the time waves.

638. But why this family?

639. Why this land?

640. Prem.

641. His time is soon.

642. How soon?

643. Give him a day. Just give him this day, please.

644. We are not gods.

645. Events sit as they will. We only witness.

646. The fixed force of time cannot be stopped.

647. I know.

648. If you didn't kill the holy man,

649. if you were only honouring his death,

650. how did he die?

651. We can show you.

652. Where've you been? You've been gone hours.

653. The Thijarians, they told me everything.

654. I know what happened.

655. And I know what happens.

656. I want to know what happens.

657. Prem dies today.

658. - We can't let that happen. - It has to.

659. For Umbreen to become your nani,

660. for you to exist, Prem has to die.

661. You mean, the Thijarians have come to kill Prem?

662. That's not why they're here. They're not assassins.

663. They honour those who die alone.

664. Aliens with compassion.

665. Umbreen loses her husband on the day she marries.

666. Of course she never wants to talk about it.

667. I'm sorry, Yaz.

668. - We should leave. - No.

669. I want to be sure she's safe, whatever happens.

670. I want to look after my nani.

671. I'm with Yaz.

672. Yeah, me, too.

673. We can't tell them what we know.

674. My friends, I woke this morning

675. to the sight of smoke over the hills.

676. More villages burned.

677. More homes ransacked.

678. It seems these savage mobs cannot be satisfied.

679. I urge you to stay safe and stay strong.

680. Protect yourselves however you must.

681. Oh.

682. The flowers don't help much.

683. You still look like a schoolboy on manoeuvres.

684. These are the best clothes I have.

685. You look great.

686. No Manish?

687. He was out early.

688. He'll be here.

689. Did you hear the noises in the valley during the night?

690. Violence is getting closer.

691. Who's doing this stuff?

692. Ordinary people who've lived here all their lives.

693. Whipped into a frenzy to be part of a mob.

694. And nothing worse than when normal people lose their minds.

695. We've lived together for decades.

696. Hindu, Muslim and Sikh.

697. And now we're being told our differences are more important than what unites us.

698. Like we learned nothing in the war.

699. I don't know how we'll protect people

700. when hatred's coming from all sides.

701. Well,

702. all we can strive to be

703. is good men.

704. And you, Prem,

705. are a good man.

706. I, erm...

707. I, er...

708. Come on.

709. Marriage.

710. This is the spot you choose?

711. I'm going to be the first woman married in Pakistan.

712. Of course, you are.

713. You all right, sweetheart?

714. I always cry at weddings.

715. I know there aren't many certainties in any of our lives,

716. but, Umbreen, Prem

717. what I see in you is the certainty of having each other.

718. Something I believe in my faith,

719. love,

720. in all its forms,

721. is the most powerful weapon we have.

722. Because love is a form of hope,

723. and like hope, love abides.

724. In the face of everything,

725. you both found love with each other.

726. You believed in it, you fought for it, and you waited for it.

727. And, now, you're committing to it.

728. Which makes you, right now, the two strongest people on this planet.

729. Maybe in this universe.

730. I'm not sure how we formalise this.

731. I am.

732. Will you?

733. That's a Hindu thing, isn't it? Tying the hands together.

734. Now it can be our thing.

735. If we want it to be.

736. I'm not often lost for words,

737. but I never thought this day would come.

738. It's been tough.

739. People who I wish were here to celebrate...

740. They are, Beti.

741. The drought was nearly the end of us.

742. But we get to have this day because of Manish.

743. You were tireless.

744. When there was hardly any food, you took none.

745. When we doubted we'd make it through to summer,

746. you kept on.

747. Night and day, we worked these fields together.

748. I am proud to have been your neighbour.

749. But I'm even prouder, now, to call you my brother.

750. You kept us fed, Manish.

751. Will you let me feed you?

752. I didn't work this land for you, Umbreen.

753. I worked it for my brothers.

754. One who didn't come back,

755. and the other I wish hadn't.

756. - Enough, Manish. - No

757. Look at you all.

758. Don't you understand what's coming?

759. None of this will make a difference.

760. I'll talk to him.

761. Prem, your turn.

762. Okay.

763. So...

764. - And what are you doing? - You did a Hindu thing with the rope.

765. Only right I do a Muslim thing, too.

766. This is your mahr.

767. Yours to keep forever.

768. Prem.

769. I'm sorry.

770. Cursed.

771. It's fine.

772. It's perfect.

773. This is us, forever.

774. Our moment in time.

775. Is that what you used to shoot the holy man?

776. Your brother's rifle?

777. Be quiet.

778. What happened, Manish?

779. Did it get out of hand?

780. Did you scare yourself?

781. Because you were too young for the war. You've never fought or killed anyone.

782. I'm not scared of anything because this is my time to fight.

783. Fight for what I believe

784. Killing a man because he might marry a Muslim and a Hindu

785. and then pretend you knew nothing?

786. Take your friends and leave

787. if you want to get out alive.

788. What have you done? Who's coming?

789. The future.

790. Listen, all of you,

791. there's armed men heading up the track. You have to leave now.

792. They want the land?

793. I'm not going anywhere. This is my home.

794. My husband and parents are buried here.

795. I'm not going to abandon it to thugs.

796. Where's Manish?

797. He's leading them here. He killed the holy man with your rifle.

798. Of course.

799. Mum's right. This is our home. We stay.

800. If you stay, you'll die.

801. Go to the house.

802. Get anything essential, and get back here.

803. I'll help you.

804. Is that Sheffield

805. marked on here?

806. My dad brought that map home from the market one day.

807. One night I said,

808. "I'll put my finger on this map and wherever it lands, I'm going to go."

809. And you landed on Sheffield?

810. Such an exotic word. It's in England. Do you know it?

811. Stop talking. We have to leave.

812. They're nearly here. You need to move out.

813. - I have to talk to Manish. - No, Prem.

814. I'm not leaving you here.

815. I'll distract them long enough to be sure you can get away.

816. Then I'll be right behind you.

817. It's too dangerous.

818. He's my brother.

819. Across the field, over the border, into the forest. Keep going north.

820. Go.

821. - You as well. - I'll come with you.

822. No.

823. These are demons I have to face alone.

824. Mum! Come on, keep up.

825. I'm running as fast as I can!

826. Look!

827. They're checking their land for people who don't belong.

828. This is our home.

829. Everyone's welcome here.

830. I know what you did to the holy man.

831. There's nothing holy about a man who would approve your union.

832. Better he die than defile himself.

833. My baby brother,

834. what happened to you?

835. Really?

836. I know you.

837. We fought together in Siam.

838. We made a good team. And now this?

839. I can't let them through, Brother.

840. We are your people, Prem.

841. India's your country. You and Kunal fought for this.

842. This is not what I fought for.

843. We will watch over him now.

844. Please, Manish.

845. Come on.

846. She made it out, right?

847. She got to Lahore?

848. She lived?

849. She made it.

850. This is a terrible design.

851. Was it a good wedding, at least?

852. Yeah.

853. What is the matter, Beti?

854. You loved Granddad, didn't you?

855. Of course.

856. And you're happy with how your life turned out?

857. Why would you be asking that?

858. Just, your journey, so many countries.

859. So many years.

860. I can't even begin to imagine what you've dealt with.

861. Then you end up in Sheffield, of all places.

862. I love Sheffield!

863. Really?

864. Well, not quite as exotic as I thought it would be.

865. But, it gave us stability,

866. a life, a home.

867. And it gave me your mum.

868. And it gave me you and your sister.

869. You want to know about the watch?

870. Really?

871. No.

872. Tell me another time.

873. I love you, Nani.

874. And I love you too, Beti.

875. Delivery for the Doctor.

876. Something is very wrong here at Kerblam.

877. If anything happens to us,

878. or anyone else here,

879. you'll have me to answer to.
