1. What her job had to say was,
everybody was welcome here.
Copy !req
2. They all took care
of each other.
Copy !req
3. She recognized how important
social media could be
and would be.
Copy !req
4. Energy clear.
Copy !req
5. But people can connect online
in the exact same way.
Copy !req
6. That evil can propagate.
Copy !req
7. Hello, Denver.
Copy !req
8. In the tattoo industry,
there is just
Copy !req
9. so much competition.
Copy !req
10. There's people who just
didn't want to see us succeed.
Copy !req
11. Then the echo chamber
getting louder and louder,
Copy !req
12. and louder
and driving me crazy
Copy !req
13. until you...
snap.
Copy !req
14. It was the manifestation
of the devil himself.
Copy !req
15. Do you want me
to show 'em to you?
Copy !req
16. Yes. What is it
that you have there?
Copy !req
17. So, this right here,
what I'm looking at is
Copy !req
18. one of the first
business cards
of Twisted Sol.
Copy !req
19. It has a picture of Alicia.
Copy !req
20. Yeah, this is the...
Copy !req
21. It's really good for me
to hold onto this.
Copy !req
22. Just remembering
where it all started.
Copy !req
23. One day, I just needed a job.
I was probably, like,
17 I think,
Copy !req
24. and stumbled across
a tattoo shop.
Copy !req
25. And the owner,
they gave me a job
working the counter.
Copy !req
26. Being that young
in that industry,
Copy !req
27. it was really cool.
Copy !req
28. And that's when
I met Alicia.
Copy !req
29. She was a piercer there.
Copy !req
30. She had this bright, red hair,
bright red eyebrows
Copy !req
31. and you know,
she definitely stood out
wherever she went.
Copy !req
32. Her energy, the way
that she carried herself.
Copy !req
33. She was a magical human.
Copy !req
34. We were like
brother and sister.
Copy !req
35. We would joke
and we would be like,
Copy !req
36. if I was a guy,
I would be you
Copy !req
37. and if you were a girl,
you'd be me.
Copy !req
38. At that time,
it was very rare to see
Copy !req
39. people of color,
couple of indigenous people
in the business.
Copy !req
40. The tattoo industry was run
by like Hell's Angels,
by biker gangs.
Copy !req
41. And so, you just had to
really make yourself small,
Copy !req
42. kind of look the other way
Copy !req
43. with a lot of
the conversations
that were going on.
Copy !req
44. There was a lot of sexism
and racist talk.
Copy !req
45. At times, like the odds
were definitely against us.
Copy !req
46. But none of that was
gonna stop us.
Copy !req
47. Alicia just had
a great vision.
Copy !req
48. We can be something different
and something better,
Copy !req
49. and it doesn't
have to be like this.
Copy !req
50. And so, she opened up
her first shop.
Copy !req
51. This is Alicia and I
at Twisted Sol.
Copy !req
52. I was there
from the beginning.
Copy !req
53. I started piercing right away.
Copy !req
54. What her shop had to say was,
everybody was welcome here.
Copy !req
55. Alicia and I first
encountered each other
Copy !req
56. when I was hosting Cafe Nuba,
"But it's hot and it's black".
Copy !req
57. That was a once a month
poetry venue.
Copy !req
58. We both happened to be
young people
Copy !req
59. who were coming up
in the scene
Copy !req
60. and kind of,
just forging our way.
Copy !req
61. Alicia represented her
Chicana and Chicano culture.
Copy !req
62. And that's what really
attracted me to her.
Copy !req
63. I had been around her shop
and she wanted to be
Copy !req
64. very blatantly clear,
we are not tolerating
Copy !req
65. classism, racism,
misogyny, misogynoir.
Copy !req
66. So I knew that
that was gonna be
a safe space for me.
Copy !req
67. Word just got out,
like, crazy.
Copy !req
68. That we were doing
something different.
Copy !req
69. People were very impressed.
Copy !req
70. They definitely
told their friends.
Copy !req
71. We got busy, and then
it just never stopped.
Copy !req
72. But there's people
who just didn't want
to see us succeed.
Copy !req
73. Someone threw this rock
through this big window
of ours.
Copy !req
74. It was a threat.
Copy !req
75. Like, watch your back,
Copy !req
76. or we're watching you,
or just, you know.
Copy !req
77. It didn't make you
feel good, for sure.
Copy !req
78. The backlash was
because of all the diversity.
Copy !req
79. It is heartbreaking,
but don't tell us
we can't do something
Copy !req
80. because we're not
the right color.
Copy !req
81. Because then we're gonna
proceed to prove you wrong.
Copy !req
82. After a couple of years
into it, you know,
we just started
Copy !req
83. to figure out our flow.
Copy !req
84. And it just got to a point
where people were just there
to come see us.
Copy !req
85. One day, someone
comes into the shop,
Copy !req
86. he got some work done.
Copy !req
87. His name was Lyndon McLeod.
Copy !req
88. He would talk to people,
he would talk to Alicia.
Copy !req
89. After a while,
they became friends.
Copy !req
90. They just started
seeing each other
Copy !req
91. as romantic partners.
Copy !req
92. He was charismatic.
Copy !req
93. Everyone that she's dated
is charismatic to some degree.
Copy !req
94. You know,
if you're here to come
Copy !req
95. and share space with us,
then just come with respect.
Copy !req
96. But if you were the type
to not be that way,
Copy !req
97. you would very quickly
find out that
Copy !req
98. that place was not for you.
Copy !req
99. It soon became apparent
that he was toxic.
Copy !req
100. Like, why isn't nobody
laughing at my racist joke
that I just said?
Copy !req
101. She would definitely be like,
look, man,
Copy !req
102. you can't act this way.
Copy !req
103. Like, you can't
say these things here.
Copy !req
104. You can't behave this way.
Copy !req
105. She gave him chances.
Copy !req
106. There were opportunities
for him to improve.
Copy !req
107. But he wasn't willing
to change or grow.
Copy !req
108. Alicia had
a conversation with him
Copy !req
109. and told him that he's not
welcome there anymore.
Copy !req
110. She learned and she let go.
Copy !req
111. He was gone.
Copy !req
112. We're done then, right?
Copy !req
113. And that was that.
Copy !req
114. And we didn't
see him for forever
Copy !req
115. and he just kind of
disappeared after that.
Copy !req
116. Twisted Sol ran
till about 2010.
Copy !req
117. And then it became
Sol Tribe.
Copy !req
118. Little bit of a bigger space.
Copy !req
119. Over the years, Alicia's words
and her personality
Copy !req
120. and her attitude
continued to just, like,
Copy !req
121. spread like wildfire.
Copy !req
122. She was really,
really respected.
Copy !req
123. Everybody just knew
who she was.
Copy !req
124. She was building
a good community
Copy !req
125. and good friendships.
Copy !req
126. Hi, y'all.
Copy !req
127. Alicia got
Sol Tribe on Facebook.
Copy !req
128. Hello, Denver.
Copy !req
129. She recognized how important
social media could be
and would be.
Copy !req
130. She used social media
to honor the skills
Copy !req
131. of the artists
that she respected,
Copy !req
132. to get them out there,
to publicize.
Copy !req
133. Sometimes, I would see
the amount of people
Copy !req
134. that liked her posts
or what she was saying
Copy !req
135. and I was like,
wow, okay,
Copy !req
136. people like us.
Copy !req
137. People wanna
get work done here.
Copy !req
138. If it wasn't her
doing her social media thing,
Copy !req
139. probably a lot of other people
might've taken a lot longer
Copy !req
140. to find our place.
Copy !req
141. It really blasted forward.
Copy !req
142. In business,
you do need people
liking your stuff.
Copy !req
143. You do need people
sharing your stuff
Copy !req
144. that is important.
Copy !req
145. But she was very much
trying to lead by example,
Copy !req
146. trying to say,
let's speak out
against these things.
Copy !req
147. She a respected voice.
Copy !req
148. So people definitely
did listen to her.
Copy !req
149. Sol Tribe was
insanely different.
Copy !req
150. You don't see someone BIPOC,
Copy !req
151. you don't see a woman,
Copy !req
152. and then you don't see
someone so calmly
Copy !req
153. navigating these choppy waters
of this industry.
Copy !req
154. So after my apprenticeship,
Copy !req
155. the first place
I beelined it to
was Sol Tribe.
Copy !req
156. I sat down with Alicia
and it was probably
the kindest let down.
Copy !req
157. It was essentially, like,
you know,
Copy !req
158. I want you to have
more experience.
Copy !req
159. I was like, okay.
Copy !req
160. Message received.
Like, I'm gonna do that
Copy !req
161. and then I'm gonna
circle back.
Copy !req
162. There was a posting for
All Heart Industries.
Copy !req
163. There was the opportunity
to actually run this studio.
Copy !req
164. I've never heard of it before,
but I was still kind of new
Copy !req
165. to the Denver tattoo scene.
Copy !req
166. So I was like
super interested.
Copy !req
167. I remember showing up
a little nervous.
Copy !req
168. This man introduced himself
as Lyndon.
Copy !req
169. He was just like
super relaxed
Copy !req
170. and kind of, like,
the cool uncle you wanna
hang out with.
Copy !req
171. You know, I shook his hand.
Copy !req
172. I said I wanna
work at the shop for you.
Copy !req
173. And he was like, okay.
Copy !req
174. And just like,
really built me up.
Copy !req
175. Like, positive,
words of affirmation,
Copy !req
176. just like, really supportive.
Copy !req
177. And he goes, so,
both our names are gonna be
on the business license.
Copy !req
178. And that way
we're in it together.
Copy !req
179. And I loved that.
I felt like he was
investing in me.
Copy !req
180. So I was sold.
I was in.
Copy !req
181. I showed up on Monday
Copy !req
182. and no one was there
to let me in.
Copy !req
183. Didn't see him
for weeks after that.
Copy !req
184. There was no one there
to support me.
Copy !req
185. I was all on my own.
Copy !req
186. I had a lot of questions.
I've never run a shop before.
Copy !req
187. The lack of communication
or contact was starting to
Copy !req
188. become a little concerning.
Copy !req
189. Then I started
discovering things
Copy !req
190. in the back
of the tattoo shop.
Copy !req
191. There was a partition
where Lyndon's
tattoo station was.
Copy !req
192. And it was full of
melted candles
Copy !req
193. and different animal bones,
like, specimen parts.
Copy !req
194. I don't think I had
one client that didn't say,
Copy !req
195. "Is he around still?"
Copy !req
196. Like, a little uncomfortable
back there.
Copy !req
197. So I remember
the first time
Copy !req
198. since I had
that interview with him,
Copy !req
199. him showing up.
Copy !req
200. He was just stone face.
He was like,
Copy !req
201. "Just coming in
to make sure
everything's okay.
Copy !req
202. I heard there's questions."
Copy !req
203. Uh, yes, there are questions
and I was just wondering
about your station.
Copy !req
204. Maybe I can just clean it
a little better.
Copy !req
205. He like, whipped
and locked eyes with me,
Copy !req
206. and he was like,
"No, don't look at my
don't touch my."
Copy !req
207. The ferocity
of that was incredible.
Copy !req
208. He had this
Copy !req
209. smile
where he just loved it.
Copy !req
210. He just became this
very aggressive person.
Copy !req
211. And when I said "became,"
Copy !req
212. he actually just started
to show who he was.
Copy !req
213. Lyndon started
calling me all the time,
Copy !req
214. being like, hey,
I'm just calling.
Copy !req
215. I'm just checking in,
what's going on?
Copy !req
216. Can you give me a report?
Copy !req
217. What's going on over there?
Copy !req
218. He would call
my personal cellphone.
Copy !req
219. And then he would
start calling the shop phone.
Copy !req
220. And then there was a day
where he actually
Copy !req
221. alternated between phones.
Copy !req
222. So it's just
constantly ringing
Copy !req
223. and being disruptive
while I'm tattooing.
Copy !req
224. He definitely be really
aggravated that I didn't
answer his call.
Copy !req
225. "When I call you, answer.
We're in this together.
Copy !req
226. This is our business,
together.
Copy !req
227. I don't know why you would
disrespect me like that."
Copy !req
228. It absolutely felt like
he had to be in control
of everything
Copy !req
229. and you could definitely
feel the vice grips.
Copy !req
230. It was getting harder
and harder to work there.
Copy !req
231. I started to ask
more questions.
Copy !req
232. Is this just me?
Copy !req
233. He never brought up
his relationship
with Sol Tribe.
Copy !req
234. And he never brought up
his relationship
Copy !req
235. with any of the artists
that worked at
Copy !req
236. All Heart Industry
before me.
Copy !req
237. I really just
wanted some advice.
Copy !req
238. But in the tattoo industry,
Copy !req
239. there's so much competition
that no one's speaking
to each other.
Copy !req
240. And Lyndon knew that
no one's gonna wanna
talk to me,
Copy !req
241. especially once
I hitch my wagon
to his horse.
Copy !req
242. But I knew
I had to get out.
Copy !req
243. And then we had
our annual check in
Copy !req
244. from the health department.
Copy !req
245. They did a check
and there wasn't a license.
Copy !req
246. He let it lapse.
Copy !req
247. I knew I had a legal out
with Lyndon
Copy !req
248. and he came unglued.
Copy !req
249. The boom of his voice
on the phone was incredible.
Copy !req
250. It was just like,
how dare you
give up on me,
Copy !req
251. we're in this together,
how dare you forget
Copy !req
252. both our names are
on that business license?
Copy !req
253. And he's finally like,
Copy !req
254. if you leave,
I'm gonna destroy you.
Copy !req
255. And I was like,
you know what, Lyndon?
Copy !req
256. I just can't stay.
Copy !req
257. They shut it down.
Copy !req
258. Ryane had
no way of knowing
that this had happened
Copy !req
259. to those working
at the stop before.
Copy !req
260. All Heart Industry,
had been there
for a couple of years.
Copy !req
261. Lyndon had earned himself
a rather negative reputation
around the community.
Copy !req
262. His very aggressive
and divisive,
Copy !req
263. and judgmental behavior
scared a lot of the staff.
Copy !req
264. As a result, there was
quite a high turn around
Copy !req
265. in All Heart Industry
and many people cut ties
with Lyndon.
Copy !req
266. And instead of taking
accountability for that,
Copy !req
267. he blamed others instead.
Copy !req
268. He felt that
he'd been betrayed
Copy !req
269. and usurped by those
in the tattoo community.
Copy !req
270. After he'd lost his business,
his friends, his reputation,
Copy !req
271. he decided to move up
into the mountains.
Copy !req
272. Lyndon built a tiny home
out of shipping containers
Copy !req
273. and ostracized himself
from everyone around him.
Copy !req
274. He had no
geographical community.
Copy !req
275. Instead, he built one online.
Copy !req
276. And it's at that time
that he found
the manosphere.
Copy !req
277. The manosphere is
a set of forums
Copy !req
278. and websites that actively
discuss feminism
Copy !req
279. and how apparently
detrimental it is to men.
Copy !req
280. He would post
pictures and videos of himself
Copy !req
281. in a hot tub smoking cigars.
Copy !req
282. Using his assault rifles
and his firearms on trees.
Copy !req
283. A lot of the comments,
remarks he made
Copy !req
284. highlighted a very aggressive
and unequal perspective
Copy !req
285. between men and women.
Copy !req
286. Many people who
looked in at his life
Copy !req
287. would see a man that was
self-sufficient, strong,
Copy !req
288. very masculine.
Copy !req
289. And that influenced
other people
Copy !req
290. to follow his ethos
and his philosophy.
Copy !req
291. With all of this support
around him,
Copy !req
292. that's where his mindsets
and views started
to perpetuate and worsen.
Copy !req
293. I'd been expressing to Alicia
Copy !req
294. that I kind of wanted to
do my own thing
Copy !req
295. and I kind of
wanted my own shop.
Copy !req
296. So we came across this space.
Copy !req
297. It was previously
another shop.
Copy !req
298. And it got closed down.
Copy !req
299. I didn't know that
Lyndon had
Copy !req
300. something to do with
the previous shop.
Copy !req
301. It's been like over ten years.
Copy !req
302. So he'd fallen off my radar.
Copy !req
303. I'd completely
forgotten about him.
Copy !req
304. The expansion of Sol Tribe
really came from the fact that
Copy !req
305. she knew and she wanted Jimmy
to have his own space.
Copy !req
306. Our Aztec dance group came
and we danced and prayed,
Copy !req
307. and did a good cleansing
of that shop
Copy !req
308. before we opened our doors.
Copy !req
309. It's when I first met Alyssa.
Copy !req
310. Alyssa and Alicia
were friends.
Copy !req
311. Alyssa, who had asked
Alicia about me
Copy !req
312. and from what I understand,
she kinda had a crush on me
for a little bit
Copy !req
313. and then I think, like,
after a few times
Copy !req
314. of her being tattooed there,
Copy !req
315. she just finally
worked up the courage
Copy !req
316. to come and try
to start hitting on me.
Copy !req
317. I'm sure she knew that
I wasn't gonna say no.
Copy !req
318. She knew what she was doing.
Copy !req
319. This is for a piercing
that I did on Alyssa.
Copy !req
320. Says, "Cute philtrum piercing
performed by me
Copy !req
321. "on this beautiful soul.
Copy !req
322. Do yourself a favor
and take one of
this girl's classes."
Copy !req
323. She's the bomb.
Copy !req
324. Really, all of yoga
and most of life
Copy !req
325. is a play between
doing and being,
Copy !req
326. movement and stillness.
Copy !req
327. I went to one of her classes
and it was just amazing, like,
Copy !req
328. her voice, the things
that she talked about,
Copy !req
329. just the poses, all of it.
Copy !req
330. It's so strange because
when that's your sister,
Copy !req
331. right, you know, like,
you know how nerdy she was
when she was little.
Copy !req
332. But then you would
step into this space
Copy !req
333. where she really
came into her own.
Copy !req
334. She was proud of herself
for doing this work.
Copy !req
335. She wanted people
to see that, too.
Copy !req
336. People were
connecting with her,
Copy !req
337. being impacted by the stuff
that she was posting.
Copy !req
338. I'd be at one of her classes
Copy !req
339. and it was like
she was like
a little celebrity.
Copy !req
340. She loved it
and she had a following.
Copy !req
341. She was a wonderful
yoga instructor.
Copy !req
342. She was goofy,
she was funny,
she was loving.
Copy !req
343. - Why are you laughing?
Copy !req
344. And I think
people were just drawn to her.
Copy !req
345. And of course, you know,
I'm gonna say that 'cause
Copy !req
346. I'm her mom,
her proud mom.
Copy !req
347. Gently on your throat.
Copy !req
348. Back to your heart.
Copy !req
349. Shake it out.
Copy !req
350. Let it all go.
Copy !req
351. Energy clear.
Copy !req
352. She grew up
in the suburbs.
Copy !req
353. There was not very many people
who look like her
Copy !req
354. where she was raised.
Copy !req
355. I would always tell her,
you know,
Copy !req
356. even if you have this much
Mexica blood in you,
Copy !req
357. you should honor that.
Copy !req
358. You're still that, like,
that's the blood that still
runs through your veins.
Copy !req
359. It was wonderful
that she found that
through Jimmy.
Copy !req
360. Spirituality and wanting
to know more
Copy !req
361. about her heritage
and feeling like
Copy !req
362. she was part of
the Indigenous community.
Copy !req
363. The more that I started
to hang out with her,
Copy !req
364. I started to realize
how passionate she was
Copy !req
365. about social justice.
Copy !req
366. She might have been posting
on social media.
Copy !req
367. She might've been protesting
at different events.
Copy !req
368. But she was also doing things
every single day
Copy !req
369. to help alleviate
those injustices
in her community.
Copy !req
370. Alyssa and Alicia would use
their social media platform
Copy !req
371. to let people know
their opinions
on these things.
Copy !req
372. Some people really liked
what we said,
Copy !req
373. but there was also
a lot of people
Copy !req
374. that really
did not like our views.
Copy !req
375. I just remember, you know,
we were sitting around one day
Copy !req
376. and someone
comes into the shop.
Copy !req
377. Once I realized who it was,
I was shocked.
Copy !req
378. It just was not
the same person
Copy !req
379. who'd come into the shop
many, many years ago.
Copy !req
380. Something was off with him.
Copy !req
381. He got bigger,
cut his hair,
Copy !req
382. had this whole other
militant look.
Copy !req
383. Everything about Lyndon
just changed.
Copy !req
384. When Lyndon
walked in there,
Copy !req
385. you can just tell he was
a mad person, like...
Copy !req
386. Like a very aggro person.
Copy !req
387. That's how I found out
that it had previously been
his shop,
Copy !req
388. but up until
that interaction with him,
I didn't know.
Copy !req
389. He was trying to
get re-involved
in our business.
Copy !req
390. I don't know
what he was expecting
Copy !req
391. or what his ideas were,
Copy !req
392. and the role
that he was gonna play
Copy !req
393. in our shop
and in our business,
Copy !req
394. but he was using his size
and his muscle
Copy !req
395. to try to get
what he wanted.
Copy !req
396. I was just like, no,
you know, like,
Copy !req
397. I quickly shot that idea down
and he did not like that.
Copy !req
398. So, he left.
Copy !req
399. Alyssa, she was
really good for me.
Copy !req
400. We had a great relationship.
Copy !req
401. We laughed.
We laughed a lot.
Copy !req
402. She asked to marry me
and I just thought
that was very beautiful.
Copy !req
403. I wanted to spend
the rest of my life with her.
Copy !req
404. We decided that we were
gonna go get married
in Teotihuacan,
Copy !req
405. which is in Mexico.
Copy !req
406. And then, we were like,
who's gonna marry us,
you know?
Copy !req
407. Then right away,
she was like, "Alicia."
Copy !req
408. She was enjoying
a relationship
that was really real.
Copy !req
409. Them against the world
in lots of ways.
Copy !req
410. The pandemic
shut everything down,
Copy !req
411. especially Alyssa's
line of work.
Copy !req
412. All the yoga studios
and stuff like that.
Copy !req
413. They didn't know
when they were gonna open.
Copy !req
414. Alicia really wanted to
support Alyssa.
Copy !req
415. So she just, pretty much,
created a job for Alyssa
Copy !req
416. so she can come
and work with us.
Copy !req
417. She moved into
becoming the jewelry manager
at Sol Tribe.
Copy !req
418. They kind of all took care
of each other.
Copy !req
419. It was, sort of, like,
we got this.
Copy !req
420. We're together.
We're gonna get through it.
Copy !req
421. We're more concerned about
our health and safety
Copy !req
422. than we ever have been before,
which means that
Copy !req
423. you're also gonna be
looked after.
Copy !req
424. Um, but we aren't gonna be
Copy !req
425. in full speed
for quite a while.
Copy !req
426. My guest on the podcast today
is author Roman McClay.
Copy !req
427. Roman is known for
his new book series
called Sanction.
Copy !req
428. A book started to
make dark waves through
the corners of the manosphere.
Copy !req
429. currently
blowing up Twitter,
Copy !req
430. making a whole
lot of noise online.
Copy !req
431. Roman McClay.
Copy !req
432. Essentially what
the book was about
Copy !req
433. is that due to
the rise in feminism
Copy !req
434. and the collapse
of masculinity,
Copy !req
435. society was doomed
to collapse.
Copy !req
436. The book was very
unapologetically violent.
Copy !req
437. It supported the ideas
of racism and misogyny.
Copy !req
438. The author, Roman McClay
had a very strong belief
Copy !req
439. in violence against those
that had wronged you
in the past.
Copy !req
440. Why don't you explain to us
a little bit about
Copy !req
441. what the book is all about?
Copy !req
442. In the book,
the main character
Copy !req
443. was called Lyndon.
Copy !req
444. People began to realize
Copy !req
445. that Roman McClay
was Lyndon McLeod.
Copy !req
446. I put it inside a story
for a very specific reason.
Copy !req
447. Lyndon described Lyndon
as an extraordinarily
gifted boy who was
Copy !req
448. born into an ordinary family.
Copy !req
449. Advanced AI decided that
he was the perfect being
Copy !req
450. to have his DNA duplicated
into 1,600,000 other men
Copy !req
451. to essentially
accelerate mankind
Copy !req
452. into a better version
of what it currently was.
Copy !req
453. You know, I say this
with no pretention,
Copy !req
454. but just as a descriptor.
Copy !req
455. I consider myself an artist.
So, I...
Copy !req
456. Lyndon's narcissism
was definitely projected
into that book.
Copy !req
457. And so, like I got
my first reader
Copy !req
458. and he sent me
a DM on Twitter.
Copy !req
459. "I've never read
anything like this.
Copy !req
460. This is the greatest book
I've ever read."
Copy !req
461. But a lot of his sentences
didn't make much sense.
Copy !req
462. There were many holes
to his story.
Copy !req
463. While Lyndon was
posting online
Copy !req
464. under his pseudo name
Roman McClay,
Copy !req
465. his following grew
quite exponentially.
Copy !req
466. Although there was
a large element of
Copy !req
467. fiction and make believe,
and imagination,
Copy !req
468. the terrifying thing is that
a lot of those names he used,
Copy !req
469. a lot of those characters
in the book
Copy !req
470. were actually
named after people
Copy !req
471. that he thought
had hurt him in the past.
Copy !req
472. He included real names,
Copy !req
473. real people's
personal details.
Copy !req
474. We are not machines.
We're men.
Copy !req
475. And eventually,
people will lose it.
Copy !req
476. Eventually, someone is
going to snap.
Copy !req
477. In 2020,
when the Black Lives Matter
Copy !req
478. movement was coming to a head
and really bursting,
Copy !req
479. Alicia took on a lot of
personal education
of her clients.
Copy !req
480. But you gotta meet us halfway
with the mask thing...
Copy !req
481. Also, other business owners,
especially them being white,
Copy !req
482. employing them
to get involved.
Copy !req
483. A very good friend of mine
pressed upon me
Copy !req
484. how important it was
that those of us
Copy !req
485. with lighter skin
speak to our communities
Copy !req
486. directly and clearly
Copy !req
487. about the anti-Blackness
that's happening around us.
Copy !req
488. The Alicia who's online
is who she was in person.
Copy !req
489. She never posted it
from a place of being trendy.
Copy !req
490. She spoke about it
in a way that was personal.
Copy !req
491. And those things land.
Those types of things stick.
Copy !req
492. It was just really important
for all of us
Copy !req
493. just to go and show
our support.
Copy !req
494. Alyssa was interested
in identifying injustices
and fixing them.
Copy !req
495. She was willing to
go down to the capital
Copy !req
496. and post about it,
and speak to her experience
Copy !req
497. as a woman of color.
Copy !req
498. I was proud of Alyssa,
proud of her strength
Copy !req
499. and her bravery,
and her ability to speak
who she was.
Copy !req
500. It was actually
a very vulnerable thing to do,
Copy !req
501. to expose yourself, to...
Copy !req
502. A, the support
and also the backlash
that could occur.
Copy !req
503. People would
write me messages at the shop.
Copy !req
504. We were not gonna change
what we were putting on
Copy !req
505. our social medias
and things like that,
Copy !req
506. just 'cause others
weren't happy with what
we were putting on there.
Copy !req
507. We must love each other
and support each other.
Copy !req
508. We must love each other
and support each other.
Copy !req
509. In the manosphere
and in his book,
Copy !req
510. Lyndon talked about
purging the ills to make
a better society,
Copy !req
511. to cleanse mankind,
to have a stronger
human race.
Copy !req
512. Some people bought
the book on Amazon.
Copy !req
513. This review says,
"This book is packed
full of rants on diversity,
Copy !req
514. women and globalization.
Copy !req
515. There were fantasies
of killing people involved
in the BLM movement.
Copy !req
516. This book fetishizes violence
as the great equalizer."
Copy !req
517. So he did meet disagreements.
Copy !req
518. He was always
very aggressive
Copy !req
519. against those voices.
Copy !req
520. These tweets
are all for one person that
simply disagreed with him.
Copy !req
521. He's threatening someone
with their life there.
Copy !req
522. Not just their own life,
but their family's as well.
Copy !req
523. At that point,
some of his followers
Copy !req
524. began to double take
on him and his beliefs.
Copy !req
525. One of his followers
started to see increasingly
Copy !req
526. aggressive, violent
and erratic messages
Copy !req
527. and social media posts.
Copy !req
528. And that's
what raised suspicion enough
Copy !req
529. for him to create a report
against Lyndon.
Copy !req
530. This report was sent
to the Denver police
and the FBI.
Copy !req
531. It specifically said
that Lyndon has
a considerable motive
Copy !req
532. to take terrorist action
on American soil.
Copy !req
533. Although the book is not
political per se,
Copy !req
534. it could be read as
an extreme right-wing
manifesto
Copy !req
535. and a terrorist prophecy.
Copy !req
536. The Denver police department
confirmed receiving the report
Copy !req
537. but never actually
followed up with that.
Copy !req
538. There were rumors
that allegedly,
Lyndon was trying to get
Copy !req
539. people to do
illegal activities with him.
Copy !req
540. He had now
taken things too far.
Copy !req
541. And so, there was
a general decline
Copy !req
542. in his community.
Copy !req
543. It began to fall apart.
Copy !req
544. And so, by 2021,
he'd pretty much cut off
Copy !req
545. all ties to his friends,
to his community,
to his fans.
Copy !req
546. He seems to be hiding
and regressing into himself.
Copy !req
547. Sol Tribe was never
the end goal for Alyssa.
Copy !req
548. It was a transitionary period.
Copy !req
549. Alyssa was talking to me
a lot about having children.
Copy !req
550. Really desiring that for
herself and for her family.
Copy !req
551. She really wanted to
have a baby.
Copy !req
552. We were saving money
to buy a house.
Copy !req
553. You know, we were just
trying to prepare
for our future.
Copy !req
554. But there was this time,
I had this feeling.
Copy !req
555. Just this something
that I could not shake.
Copy !req
556. A very awkward,
not good feeling
Copy !req
557. of not being safe there
and I just remembered
Copy !req
558. telling her, like, we gotta
get out of this shop.
We gotta leave.
Copy !req
559. But I knew that
we gotta work
Copy !req
560. and we gotta stick this out
until we put ourselves
Copy !req
561. in a position
that we need to be.
Copy !req
562. Sol Tribe was open
after Christmas
Copy !req
563. and Jimmy and Alyssa
gifted me new earrings.
Copy !req
564. Jimmy said, yeah,
come in to the shop
Copy !req
565. and I'll put them in.
Copy !req
566. I left Jimmy a tip
on the bench,
Copy !req
567. and as I was leaving, I said,
"Did you get your money?"
Copy !req
568. And he goes, "No."
And Alyssa said, "I have it."
Copy !req
569. And Jimmy said,
"Oh, Alyssa, you take my heart
and my soul
Copy !req
570. and now you're
taking my money?"
Copy !req
571. Just teasing...
Copy !req
572. You know.
Copy !req
573. Being so cute and I
hugged them both and left.
Copy !req
574. That was the last time
I saw her.
Copy !req
575. I was in the back in my room.
Copy !req
576. Alyssa and Alicia were
in the front.
Copy !req
577. I heard a noise.
Copy !req
578. I thought
something had fallen.
Copy !req
579. And then I heard shots.
Copy !req
580. But when I saw him,
I remember the feeling
of pure evil.
Copy !req
581. Like, no soul, no nothing.
Copy !req
582. A hollow shell.
Copy !req
583. A manifestation
of the devil himself.
Copy !req
584. He came in
and then shot me.
Copy !req
585. I woke up pretty early.
Copy !req
586. And I had a text
from my dad and it said,
Copy !req
587. "Call me when you wake up.
Copy !req
588. It's really bad."
Copy !req
589. I called him.
Copy !req
590. And I could hear Nancy
in the background, crying.
Copy !req
591. Not crying, wailing.
Copy !req
592. He said,
"It's Alyssa and Jimmy.
Copy !req
593. They were working
and there was a shooting.
Copy !req
594. And she didn't make it."
Copy !req
595. I couldn't even...
Copy !req
596. comprehend it
or process it.
Copy !req
597. I just screamed,
Copy !req
598. and screamed,
and screamed.
Copy !req
599. Once I got out of surgery,
Copy !req
600. I was like, where's my wife?
Copy !req
601. How's my wife?
Where is she?
Copy !req
602. It was a detective
or an FBI agent, said,
they're gone.
Copy !req
603. I-I just...
I could not believe it.
Copy !req
604. The man had killed
my wife and Alicia...
Copy !req
605. Just could not believe it.
Copy !req
606. Alyssa and Alicia
had been murdered
Copy !req
607. in this crime spree.
Copy !req
608. I knew that I couldn't let...
Copy !req
609. us be broken.
Copy !req
610. I hope it's going to
help you and ignite you
Copy !req
611. to do more work and change
throughout our communities.
Copy !req
612. I couldn't stop
what happened.
Copy !req
613. But I could help us
get past it.
Copy !req
614. And I knew that's
what she wanted me to do.
Copy !req
615. I knew that's
what she wanted me to do.
Copy !req
616. So, um...
Copy !req
617. I miss you so much.
Copy !req
618. All the way to the hospital,
Copy !req
619. praying that it wasn't true.
Copy !req
620. My baby.
Copy !req
621. With so much to give
and to do with her life still.
Copy !req
622. So much.
Copy !req
623. We start with
breaking news tonight.
Copy !req
624. Four people are dead
and three others are hurt,
Copy !req
625. including a Lakewood
police agent,
Copy !req
626. after a shooting
and crime spree
Copy !req
627. that started in Denver
and ended in Lakewood.
Copy !req
628. The detectives are like,
Copy !req
629. do you know
a Lyndon McLeod?
Copy !req
630. So much time had passed,
but I knew who he was,
Copy !req
631. and I just, I didn't, like,
I didn't understand why.
Copy !req
632. And that's just what made it
really confusing for me
Copy !req
633. because it was somebody
who we shared space with.
Copy !req
634. I think it just hits
a little different when
it's somebody you knew of.
Copy !req
635. The shooter killed people
in one tattoo shop
Copy !req
636. after another that night.
Copy !req
637. It appears he was targeting
the heart of Denver's
creative community.
Copy !req
638. Following days,
when we got home,
Copy !req
639. the FBI barge into
our studio
Copy !req
640. and they're asking me,
why were you on
the phone with him
Copy !req
641. on the day of the 27th?
Copy !req
642. Lyndon called multiple times
to our shop phone.
Copy !req
643. I felt immediately sick
to my stomach
Copy !req
644. because he was calling to see
if I was working,
Copy !req
645. to come into
the shop that day.
Copy !req
646. So if my wife didn't have me
go on vacation,
Copy !req
647. my wife and I probably
would be dead.
Copy !req
648. Not probably. We'd be dead.
Copy !req
649. A lot of people are like,
what did you do
to make him mad?
Copy !req
650. Like, that mad
seven years later?
Copy !req
651. Well, I don't know
if it's because I was
Copy !req
652. a woman, queer,
non-binary,
Copy !req
653. or he just never let it go
that I left him.
Copy !req
654. Or that, maybe,
I was thriving
Copy !req
655. with my own studio
that made him mad?
Copy !req
656. I don't know.
Copy !req
657. Three people
killed that night
Copy !req
658. had previously worked
at Lyndon or knew him
Copy !req
659. in the tattoo community.
Copy !req
660. After leaving Sol Tribe,
Copy !req
661. he traveled to
Jeremy Costilow's home.
Copy !req
662. He had briefly partnered
with Lyndon at
All Heart Industry.
Copy !req
663. He was one of many people
that experienced Lyndon's
Copy !req
664. aggressive and toxic behavior,
Copy !req
665. and as a result,
cut ties with All Heart
Industry years before.
Copy !req
666. Jeremy Costilow was attacked,
but survived.
Copy !req
667. Lyndon then drove to
another ex-colleague's house.
Copy !req
668. Michael Swinyard's,
who used to work with him.
Copy !req
669. And shot him.
Copy !req
670. He then travelled to
Lucky 13,
Copy !req
671. where he'd shot and killed
Danny Scofield.
Copy !req
672. Danny was an exceptionally
talented artist.
Copy !req
673. He was one of Lyndon's
first workers.
Copy !req
674. But the personal grudge
that Lyndon had against him
Copy !req
675. was when he left
All Heart Industry.
Copy !req
676. Lyndon then travelled
to the Hyatt hotel,
Copy !req
677. where he'd walked up
to the receptionist
Copy !req
678. at the time, Sarah Steck.
Copy !req
679. Sarah was
an aspiring artist,
Copy !req
680. known to be a very caring,
compassionate person.
Copy !req
681. She was a stranger to him.
Copy !req
682. And still, he murdered her
in cold blood.
Copy !req
683. By the time
this man walked up
to agent Ashley Ferris,
Copy !req
684. police say he had shot
multiple people already.
Copy !req
685. Then he shot her
in the stomach.
Copy !req
686. Although wounded
on the ground
Copy !req
687. and losing feeling in her leg,
Copy !req
688. agent Ashley Ferris fires back
and kills the shooter.
Copy !req
689. I'm sure
in a million lifetimes,
Copy !req
690. he never thought
it would be a woman
to end his.
Copy !req
691. So, Agent Ashley, like,
thank you so much
Copy !req
692. for what you did.
Copy !req
693. Let me re-emphasize
or restate that
Copy !req
694. this individual was
known to law enforcement.
Copy !req
695. He was on our radar.
Copy !req
696. We are sharing
that we knew
Copy !req
697. of this individual,
but there was...
Copy !req
698. The police were aware
of various issues.
Copy !req
699. Prior to his time
at All Heart Industry,
Copy !req
700. Lyndon had plead guilty
to threatening
Copy !req
701. previous employees
with a firearm.
Copy !req
702. Yet, two years later,
he was able to
Copy !req
703. regain a firearm.
Copy !req
704. They were also
aware of the death threats
that were given online.
Copy !req
705. They were aware of
the report that was sent
a year prior,
Copy !req
706. but they never actually
followed up
Copy !req
707. to discover that
the names and details
Copy !req
708. of the victims who were
actually in those books.
Copy !req
709. He described it to the T
what he was gonna do.
Copy !req
710. He didn't even
change our names.
Copy !req
711. Alicia's name
was mentioned and others.
Copy !req
712. He wrote it out exactly
how he carried it out.
Copy !req
713. He had been
targeting Alicia for a while.
Copy !req
714. This had been planned.
Copy !req
715. What probably
accelerated this process
Copy !req
716. was the social media.
Copy !req
717. I'm sure he was stalking her.
Copy !req
718. She was living her dream.
She had her shop.
Copy !req
719. She had the community
he needed.
Copy !req
720. She had the community
he wanted.
Copy !req
721. It's so disgusting
to hear these people, like,

722. "We had no idea.
We had no idea."

723. Y'all never went deep
and asked him,
Copy !req
724. "Why are you so hateful?"
Copy !req
725. He wrote books.
Y'all didn't know about this?
Copy !req
726. He went into an echo chamber.
Copy !req
727. That's the most
dangerous place.
Copy !req
728. There was no home,
there was no warmth.
Copy !req
729. There was only an affirmation
of his hatred.
Copy !req
730. A couple of weeks
after the attack,
Copy !req
731. the US representatives
of Congress
Copy !req
732. asked the Department
of Justice
Copy !req
733. to look at
their previous encounters
Copy !req
734. with Lyndon McLeod
and open up an investigation.
Copy !req
735. This investigation

that Alyssa sent.
Copy !req
738. She wrote to me,
"I love you so much.
Copy !req
739. You bring my heart
so much joy.
Copy !req
740. I had the best time
naming our babies
Copy !req
741. and listening to music
and loving you
Copy !req
742. forever, and ever, and ever."
Copy !req
743. This is a letter
that one of Alyssa's
closest friends wrote to her.
Copy !req
744. "Lyss, with your memory,
give me the courage
Copy !req
745. to transmute anger
into action,
Copy !req
746. then action into peace.
Copy !req
747. Even though your body is gone,
Copy !req
748. I feel you in the color blue,
Copy !req
749. in small acts of kindness.
Copy !req
750. Together, we were invincible.
Copy !req
751. And we would
take on anything.
Copy !req
752. All the darkness
in the world
Copy !req
753. cannot extinguish the light
of a single candle."
Copy !req
754. Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado,
Copy !req
755. and Alicia Cardenas,
Copy !req
756. their legacy
will live forever.
Copy !req
757. They will not be forgotten.
Copy !req
758. And they will continue.
Copy !req
759. Clear.
