1. Hello, everyone,
I'm Mr. Anime
Copy !req
2. and boy,
do I have a show for you?
Copy !req
3. You could say that
he was one of the first
influencers.
Copy !req
4. I've hit 1,000 subscribers.
Copy !req
5. Becoming a filmmaker,
it's a big idea
for a small town.
Copy !req
6. This is just one of those
little one minute videos
that will make you smile.
Copy !req
7. YouTube begin, and now
you could share your opinions
with complete strangers.
Copy !req
8. But there was so much darker
lurking below the surface.
Copy !req
9. We had no idea
what we were walking into.
Copy !req
10. You think,
it won't happen to me,
but sometimes it does.
Copy !req
11. There was
a sense in the air
that something was wrong.
Copy !req
12. Majorly wrong.
Copy !req
13. I was the chief of police
in Waller, Texas.
Copy !req
14. We received a call
to do a welfare check.
Copy !req
15. I put on my bulletproof vest,
and looked around the house.
Copy !req
16. That's when I saw
a person inside on the floor
covered with blood,
Copy !req
17. and I knew
we had a real problem.
Copy !req
18. The sleepy little community
of Waller, Texas,
Copy !req
19. had woken up and realized
that something
horrible had happened.
Copy !req
20. Everybody knew
the Sesler family.
Copy !req
21. They were members
of the local church in Waller
Copy !req
22. and loved by a lot of people.
Copy !req
23. There was Lawton,
the father,
Copy !req
24. Rhonda, the mother,
Copy !req
25. Mark, the older brother,
Copy !req
26. and Trey,
the baby brother.
Copy !req
27. They were very close.
Copy !req
28. Lawton was a teacher
in the community
Copy !req
29. and seemed to be very loved,
Copy !req
30. not only by the students
but the students' families.
Copy !req
31. Rhonda Sesler worked
at The Waller Times,
Copy !req
32. she was out meeting people,
delivering papers,
Copy !req
33. and just interacting
with her community every day.
Copy !req
34. Rhonda and Lawton did feel
it was very important
for their sons
Copy !req
35. to have a good career
and a good life.
Copy !req
36. Rhonda was
valedictorian herself,
Copy !req
37. during her time at school,
and I believe that
Copy !req
38. that really motivated Mark
to have a great education.
Copy !req
39. Mark was progressing
nicely on the path
Copy !req
40. that most people want
to see their kids go down.
Copy !req
41. Education, career,
Copy !req
42. about to go out
into the world.
Copy !req
43. Trey had dreams
and aspirations
Copy !req
44. that were maybe more unique.
Copy !req
45. He wanted to make movies.
Copy !req
46. Trey was unusual in
that he, like, had a camera
Copy !req
47. and was already
shooting things before people
really had these things.
Copy !req
48. I began teaching video
technology back in 2005.
Copy !req
49. He started hanging out
in my class
Copy !req
50. and, and making films
and working with me.
Copy !req
51. I don't know what kind
of rumors you've heard.
Copy !req
52. I even acted in
some of his films.
Copy !req
53. The town didn't really like
people of my, of my kind.
Copy !req
54. Your kind?
Copy !req
55. That's actually
how I met Trey's mother
and I think his brother.
Copy !req
56. Please enjoy your stay
Copy !req
57. however, the rooms
are pretty messy.
Copy !req
58. Oh, don't worry about that.
I just need a place
for the night.
Copy !req
59. She was supporting him.
Copy !req
60. Actually helping him
with the films.
Copy !req
61. This is just one of those
little one minute videos
that will make you smile.
Copy !req
62. Trey was into
making funny videos,
Copy !req
63. slapstick stuff...
Copy !req
64. and horror films.
Copy !req
65. I told him pay more attention
to the story
than special effects.
Copy !req
66. Of course,
the high school kid,
Copy !req
67. he wants to do
the special effects.
Copy !req
68. I never saw Trey
more excited
Copy !req
69. than when he had an idea
of something to film.
Copy !req
70. It's all this
element of fantasy
and kind of just living
Copy !req
71. in this other reality
for a moment.
Copy !req
72. Fools! How dare
you say my name.
Copy !req
73. A lot of people
in our friend group
Copy !req
74. were probably
what you'd call like more
on the nerdy side of things.
Copy !req
75. A lot of people
like the anime thing,
the magic cards,
Copy !req
76. Dungeons and Dragons.
Copy !req
77. Making his little
films and skits
Copy !req
78. was just a great form
of entertainment
Copy !req
79. that didn't
get you in trouble.
Copy !req
80. Prepare to die.
Copy !req
81. Filming became
Trey's main thing.
Copy !req
82. It was a good way for him
to kind of come out
of his shell
Copy !req
83. with that camera,
it's like, now you have
a reason to speak to somebody.
Copy !req
84. In junior high,
I met Trey at a dance
Copy !req
85. towards the end
of the school year.
Copy !req
86. I actually asked him to dance.
Copy !req
87. I hadn't danced a lot
at many prior dances,
Copy !req
88. and we were kind
of awkward together.
Copy !req
89. And towards the end
of the night, he said,
Copy !req
90. "Does this mean
we're boyfriend
and girlfriend?"
Copy !req
91. And I thought,
"Well, okay, sure."
Copy !req
92. So we sort of made it
official that night
Copy !req
93. that we were going to be
boyfriend and girlfriend.
Copy !req
94. In junior high,
Copy !req
95. Trey was very charming
and humorous.
Copy !req
96. He was light.
Copy !req
97. He gave me a Valentine's gift.
Copy !req
98. It was this heart
he had made with lights.
Copy !req
99. It's so nice and unexpected.
Copy !req
100. I thought that
he was a very sweet guy.
Copy !req
101. Once I got to high school,
I started going over
to his house.
Copy !req
102. I met his family.
Copy !req
103. He was a little, I guess,
Copy !req
104. spoiled by his parents,
but very loved,
Copy !req
105. and they just wanted
the best for him.
Copy !req
106. Trey did seem to look up
to his older brother, Mark.
Copy !req
107. He seemed
more serious than Trey.
Copy !req
108. But still,
he had a sense of humor,
Copy !req
109. and they acted
more like best friends.
Copy !req
110. Mark was an influence
for Trey to become
Copy !req
111. interested in anime
and film projects.
Copy !req
112. They were often
working on films together.
Copy !req
113. Trey wanted people
to see his films.
Copy !req
114. Where'd they go?
Copy !req
115. But becoming a filmmaker,
I can only imagine
Copy !req
116. would come across
as extremely challenging
Copy !req
117. and almost like,
it might seem impossible.
Copy !req
118. It's a big idea
for a small town.
Copy !req
119. YouTube began in 2005.
Copy !req
120. Social media was just starting
to become a part of our lives.
Copy !req
121. We were sort of, uh...
Copy !req
122. the first ones
to really get exposed
Copy !req
123. to this brand new technology.
Copy !req
124. I figure the best way
to enjoy this movie
from my— from a fans...
Copy !req
125. I created my YouTube channel,
Copy !req
126. and my username
was called Aikoarisaka420.
Copy !req
127. Even though I didn't know
what 420 meant at the time.
Copy !req
128. Oh, hi, everybody.
Copy !req
129. My name is Trey Sesler.
Copy !req
130. I founded LensCapProductions
in 2004.
Copy !req
131. I didn't know much about
YouTube at all.
Copy !req
132. But I didn't know at the time
that he was on YouTube.
Copy !req
133. The main purpose of this video
is basically an introduction
Copy !req
134. to the LensCapProduction
channel.
Copy !req
135. Everybody can do it
and get yourself out there
and get seen,
Copy !req
136. and that's why YouTube,
it worked for him.
Copy !req
137. So I also do special effects
tests that could help you
in your homemade movies.
Copy !req
138. You could share it
with like-minded people
Copy !req
139. from different parts
of the world,
Copy !req
140. and that was what
made it very... exciting.
Copy !req
141. I guess I'll see you
on Episode two
Copy !req
142. of special effects
with Trey Sesler.
Copy !req
143. Initially, Trey's channel
had a fairly slow start,
Copy !req
144. but over time,
it was building up.
Copy !req
145. And gradually he was getting
more and more views.
Copy !req
146. But some of Trey's
earlier videos,
Copy !req
147. some of his skits,
some of his attempts at comedy
Copy !req
148. were actually getting
quite a lot
of negative comments.
Copy !req
149. Being the target
of hateful comments would be
upsetting for anybody.
Copy !req
150. Are you tired
of always being depressed?
Copy !req
151. Always letting
the enemy get you down.
Copy !req
152. But I think arguably
even more so for a teenager
Copy !req
153. because they're still
developing
their self-confidence
Copy !req
154. and their self-esteem.
Copy !req
155. Because we were all
new to this,
Copy !req
156. some of us handled it
better than others.
Copy !req
157. Some people
did not take it very well.
Copy !req
158. I'm sure there were
some trolling comments
that may have gotten to him.
Copy !req
159. So I'm just gonna hold
this lamp over my head.
Copy !req
160. And maybe that will
help things a little bit.
Copy !req
161. But Trey
didn't allow this negativity
Copy !req
162. to prevent him to continue
making more and more content.
Copy !req
163. I was about 15 years old
Copy !req
164. when I started doing projects
Copy !req
165. after school with him
and I was in his room
Copy !req
166. and he would be
editing videos.
Copy !req
167. This would have been
the first time
that we were alone together.
Copy !req
168. I didn't know he had started
a YouTube channel.
Copy !req
169. But he would mention scenes
he was going to do
Copy !req
170. that involved prop swords
or prop guns.
Copy !req
171. When I would watch them,
Copy !req
172. I noticed sometimes
they were darker
and more violent.
Copy !req
173. One time I was watching
Trey edit a video
Copy !req
174. and he said,
"I want to try this out."
Copy !req
175. He got out ropes...
Copy !req
176. I thought were
for maybe scenes,
Copy !req
177. and he was testing them
out on me.
Copy !req
178. But he just said,
Copy !req
179. "You know, we're going
to try this...
Copy !req
180. and see how bad
it hurts you."
Copy !req
181. I was tied up.
Copy !req
182. Just like my hands
behind my back.
Copy !req
183. It wasn't common
for him to test...
Copy !req
184. anything out with me.
Copy !req
185. I wasn't into it
Copy !req
186. and I did kind of notice,
Copy !req
187. it was,
it was a little odd.
Copy !req
188. But he said it was completely
normal and it was fine.
Copy !req
189. My first impression I ever had
of him was like,
he was generous in giving
Copy !req
190. and kind and I wanted to think
that he was still a nice guy.
Copy !req
191. Hello, everyone,
Copy !req
192. I'm Mr. Anime and boy,
do I have a show for you.
Copy !req
193. Over time, Trey's channel
became focused
on anime reviews.
Copy !req
194. There you go.
Copy !req
195. He developed
a character called Mr. Anime.
Copy !req
196. Today we're going
to be reviewing a show
Copy !req
197. that had a very large impact
on audiences
all around the world.
Copy !req
198. Trey was one
of the very first people
to review anime in the US.
Copy !req
199. Today's review
is Cyber Team in Akihabara.
Copy !req
200. He was silly,
he was funny,
but it didn't seem forced.
Copy !req
201. It seemed like
he was seeing the real him.
Copy !req
202. Hi, everybody,
I'm Mr. Anime.
Copy !req
203. And I'm Mark Sesler.
Copy !req
204. Trey clearly
had a passion for anime,
Copy !req
205. and whether he intended to
or not at the beginning,
Copy !req
206. eventually, he found
this untapped community
on the internet.
Copy !req
207. And today I'm going
to be talking
about some of the best
Copy !req
208. and most influential faces
and anime reviewers
on YouTube.
Copy !req
209. Next on the list,
Akiosaka420.
Copy !req
210. I don't think anyone
does anime like him.
Copy !req
211. I do remember him
saying that about me.
Copy !req
212. The guy cheers me up
and makes me laugh
with each anime review.
Copy !req
213. His style of reviewing
Copy !req
214. was actually kind
of similar to my own.
Copy !req
215. We were both very analytical.
Copy !req
216. I got to say
this show
was beautifully directed.
Copy !req
217. It was written
kind of confusing,
Copy !req
218. but if you were able
to follow it,
then it was pretty good.
Copy !req
219. Aside
from contacting each other
Copy !req
220. through YouTube's
messaging system,
Copy !req
221. the other way
that I got in contact
with Trey was through Skype.
Copy !req
222. Most of the time,
it was group chats.
Copy !req
223. We would just get
into all sorts of fun
little group discussions.
Copy !req
224. Trey was one of us.
Copy !req
225. He was a geek like us.
Copy !req
226. He was into
the same things as us.
Copy !req
227. The anime community
was very supportive.
Copy !req
228. He had more
of a presence than I did.
Copy !req
229. His videos were definitely
of better quality.
Copy !req
230. He uploaded more frequently.
Copy !req
231. Consistency and quality
are what help you grow
in YouTube.
Copy !req
232. This is pretty much
a landmark
for LensCapProductions.
Copy !req
233. I've hit 1,000 subscribers.
Copy !req
234. He definitely had
quite a following.
Copy !req
235. His popularity
and his reach was growing.
Copy !req
236. I'm very, very happy.
Copy !req
237. Yeah!
Copy !req
238. Trey was starting to thrive
in terms
of his YouTube channel.
Copy !req
239. But offline
and behind closed doors,
Copy !req
240. his behavior was becoming
more troubling.
Copy !req
241. Whoa!
Copy !req
242. During
the several years
that I dated Trey,
Copy !req
243. he did a lot of, um,
Copy !req
244. really... things that I should
have taken as a red flag.
Copy !req
245. I made excuses in my head
for all of those things.
Copy !req
246. There was a point
when I was 16
Copy !req
247. that he'd asked me to do
things that...
Copy !req
248. were sexual.
Copy !req
249. He would say, "You know,
people play all kinds
Copy !req
250. of weird games and things
behind closed doors
and experiment."
Copy !req
251. One time I do remember
being on the floor.
Copy !req
252. My hands were above my head,
duct taped together and...
Copy !req
253. he had duct tape
over my mouth.
Copy !req
254. Then he had his body over me,
Copy !req
255. where, you know,
I didn't feel like
I could move.
Copy !req
256. His eyes were darker,
and he wasn't smiling
or anything,
Copy !req
257. this was not just a game.
Copy !req
258. That was the first time
I even considered
Copy !req
259. he might do something
violent to me.
Copy !req
260. That was the point that,
you know, I felt that...
Copy !req
261. we couldn't
really be together.
Copy !req
262. And when Trey and I separated,
Copy !req
263. he never said
anything about that.
Copy !req
264. I don't think that he really
questioned it verbally to me.
Copy !req
265. I did fall into a depression.
Copy !req
266. Looking back,
that was the motivator
to switch schools.
Copy !req
267. I remember that specifically
being the complete cutoff,
Copy !req
268. um, with Trey and me.
Copy !req
269. I lost touch with Trey
after high school.
Copy !req
270. The group did naturally kind
Copy !req
271. of just disperse,
and you know,
Copy !req
272. everybody kind
of went their own ways
for the most part.
Copy !req
273. Trey really
didn't have any jobs.
Copy !req
274. He worked
for the grocery store
a little while.
Copy !req
275. And I understand that he went
to Blinn College,
Copy !req
276. which is a small
like community college.
Copy !req
277. But he dropped
out of Blinn college.
Copy !req
278. I think that was a source
of some contention
in the family.
Copy !req
279. Them having
a more traditional plan
Copy !req
280. and outlook for his future
than maybe he had for himself.
Copy !req
281. Being a YouTube personality
or an influencer
Copy !req
282. hadn't become part
of the mainstream yet.
Copy !req
283. And so probably,
if I had been a parent
at that time,
Copy !req
284. I would have been like
"He's just wasting his time."
Copy !req
285. He needed to get
a community of people,
Copy !req
286. and he found this online.
Copy !req
287. And he found it
a thousand times over,
Copy !req
288. 'cause he had like thousands
of people listening to him.
Copy !req
289. Little did I know.
I knew nothing
about this at the time.
Copy !req
290. You've reached
2,000 subscribers.
Copy !req
291. Two thousand subscribers?
Copy !req
292. That's incredible.
Copy !req
293. He had quite
a reach
in the anime community.
Copy !req
294. I want to thank you
for staying with me
through all these years.
Copy !req
295. I love your support.
Copy !req
296. And it's actually opened up
the ability for Google
to monetize my videos.
Copy !req
297. He's definitely one
of the only ones that spoke of
Copy !req
298. YouTube monetization
at the time.
Copy !req
299. He seemed happy
with where he was going,
Copy !req
300. because being approved
was definitely a huge thing.
Copy !req
301. You made money based on
how many views you got.
Copy !req
302. Now, I can make money
so I can get
a high definition camera.
Copy !req
303. Today, he absolutely would
be considered an influencer.
Copy !req
304. And LensCapProduction
has many more in store for you
for this great year.
Copy !req
305. He wasn't going
anywhere in his real life.
Copy !req
306. He was going somewhere
on the Internet.
Copy !req
307. With most of his friends
moving on and leaving town,
Copy !req
308. and him being stuck behind
Copy !req
309. in this small town
in his family home,
Copy !req
310. the tone of Trey's videos
has shifted.
Copy !req
311. Today I'm ranting on something
a little bit anime unrelated.
Copy !req
312. I'm ranting
on all the shootings
that have been happening.
Copy !req
313. It is a little bit
disturbing to know
Copy !req
314. that you could be a victim
in something like this
Copy !req
315. at these times,
all the people
that were victims,
Copy !req
316. you think,
it won't happen to me,
Copy !req
317. but sometimes it does.
Copy !req
318. This concern,
this anxiety he has
about gun violence.
Copy !req
319. I think it is quite natural to
to be worried about it
Copy !req
320. and to want to talk about it.
Copy !req
321. But just two months later,
the tone has changed again.
Copy !req
322. Personally,
Copy !req
323. if an army invades
and starts walking
down the city,
Copy !req
324. blowing people up,
Copy !req
325. - I... ga-ga...
will be firing at them.
Copy !req
326. and I imagine
that everyone else
with a gun would be too.
Copy !req
327. One of the most glaring
contradictions
is that in the first video,
Copy !req
328. he is very much
against gun violence,
Copy !req
329. whereas in the second video
he's holding a huge gun
Copy !req
330. and he's almost advocating
ownership of guns.
Copy !req
331. I didn't really
think much of it because
he was living in Texas.
Copy !req
332. But I did wonder
Copy !req
333. why he was saying
these sorts of things.
Copy !req
334. Countries that ban citizens
from having guns...
Copy !req
335. In a relatively
short space of time,
Copy !req
336. we're seeing
paranoia creep in.
Copy !req
337. being able
to protect themselves
from invading countries.
Copy !req
338. Countries that allow
their citizens to have guns...
Copy !req
339. boom, shoot each other.
Copy !req
340. I think
the rest of the family,
Copy !req
341. they didn't know
about his YouTube channel.
Copy !req
342. Maybe he wasn't able
to share with them
Copy !req
343. because they might
criticize it.
Copy !req
344. Trey Sesler signing out.
Copy !req
345. But I think that was
when he decided,
Copy !req
346. "I'm gonna be real Trey now."
Copy !req
347. My grandmother
passed away a while ago.
Copy !req
348. And now, uh,
I moved in.
Copy !req
349. When Trey was 21,
his grandmother
had passed away,
Copy !req
350. so he moved
into her empty house
in a neighboring town.
Copy !req
351. This would be the first time
that Trey had independence,
autonomy.
Copy !req
352. The first time that he was
living away from home.
Copy !req
353. This is it behind me.
Copy !req
354. The house is actually
featured in my new film.
Copy !req
355. And while I think it might
actually be haunted...
Copy !req
356. That's where he had
a darker turn in his life.
Copy !req
357. Whatever supervision he was
having in Waller
Copy !req
358. with his family,
Copy !req
359. it did help him to some degree
to stay on the right path.
Copy !req
360. Now that was gone.
Copy !req
361. At that point,
Copy !req
362. one of Trey's brother
Mark's friends needed
a place to stay
Copy !req
363. for a short period of time,
and Trey kindly
offered up his home.
Copy !req
364. To me, I wonder whether
some sort of mental illness
is developing.
Copy !req
365. Something like depression
or bipolar.
Copy !req
366. The very fact
that he's freaking out
his friends,
Copy !req
367. people that
know him really well,
is a huge red flag.
Copy !req
368. And things start
getting even darker.
Copy !req
369. Oh, how you doing, everyone?
It's Mr. Anime.
Copy !req
370. Or you can call me Trey.
Copy !req
371. You can call me
the guy who does
the video game reviews
Copy !req
372. or you can call me
the guy that does
all the gun stuff now.
Copy !req
373. Uh, what I have here today
to show you is a Hi-Point.
Copy !req
374. Now, for those of you
who are familiar
with Hi-Point,
Copy !req
375. you might have
a very low opinion of them,
Copy !req
376. or you might have
a high opinion of them.
Copy !req
377. I have a very classic—
Copy !req
378. He's drunk.
Copy !req
379. It shoots
nine millimeter rounds.
Copy !req
380. Ten-round magazine
comes standard with it.
Copy !req
381. - And you—
- Was he reviewing the gun?
Copy !req
382. Was he, like, uh—
Copy !req
383. Like, was he doing this
to test the pros and cons
or like that?
Copy !req
384. No, it was just him
shooting stuff
Copy !req
385. while under the influence.
Copy !req
386. As Trey is posting more
and more videos about guns,
Copy !req
387. as he's appearing inebriated,
Copy !req
388. you can see a level of concern
from his fans
Copy !req
389. in the comments sections
of his videos.
Copy !req
390. People would
definitely be asking
Copy !req
391. "What is going on?"
Copy !req
392. Like, "Are you okay?"
Copy !req
393. And not just that.
Copy !req
394. "Why do you have a gun
while you're drunk?"
Copy !req
395. I wouldn't want to be sitting
on that couch right now.
Copy !req
396. But despite this,
he is still growing
in popularity on YouTube.
Copy !req
397. People didn't seem
to want to look away.
Copy !req
398. Ah, five out of ten.
Copy !req
399. Living by himself,
without parental supervision,
Copy !req
400. his alcohol and drug use
slowly starts to rise.
Copy !req
401. There seems to be both meth
and cannabis use.
Copy !req
402. Different substances
have different effects
on the human psyche.
Copy !req
403. But both cannabis
and methamphetamine
Copy !req
404. are renowned for increasing
agitation and paranoia.
Copy !req
405. My favorite part of the day,
Copy !req
406. comparing my ratings
to other anime reviewers.
Copy !req
407. Cracks are starting to appear.
People are starting to notice.
Copy !req
408. As time went on,
Copy !req
409. we did see
less videos from him.
Copy !req
410. But, you know, we were more
concerned about your health.
Copy !req
411. You know,
take care of yourself first.
Copy !req
412. Worry about the videos later.
Copy !req
413. It's quite tragic
to see somebody
Copy !req
414. decline like this
right in front
of our very eyes.
Copy !req
415. This is somebody that's
at a pretty high risk
of harming themselves.
Copy !req
416. Plus, he's got
access to guns.
Copy !req
417. After living by himself
for over a year,
Copy !req
418. all these social issues,
all these difficulties
Copy !req
419. that Trey is facing build up.
Copy !req
420. He's had enough.
He calls his parents sobbing.
Copy !req
421. He begged them
to come around and help him.
Copy !req
422. I don't think they had
a real knowledge of YouTube.
Copy !req
423. They had no clue
Trey was putting
this kind of thing online.
Copy !req
424. His parents are clearly
concerned about him,
Copy !req
425. given that he's alone,
Copy !req
426. he's got guns
all over the house.
Copy !req
427. That was the turning point
for when Rhonda and Lawton
Copy !req
428. agreed for Trey to come back
and live in the family home.
Copy !req
429. For them to bring him
back into their home
could show many things.
Copy !req
430. There's a vicious monster
over there in the woods.
Copy !req
431. - Could you take care of it?
- Of course.
Copy !req
432. Maybe as long
as they could keep him
in the home,
Copy !req
433. keep him under wraps,
things wouldn't get worse.
Copy !req
434. They were trying to love him
the only way they knew how.
Copy !req
435. So once again,
you had the four members
of the family
Copy !req
436. under the same roof.
Copy !req
437. Mark was working.
He finished his education.
Copy !req
438. But he was still
living at home for a while.
Copy !req
439. We know that around this time,
2011, Trey was regularly
seeing a psychiatrist.
Copy !req
440. He's being
prescribed medication.
Copy !req
441. This helped him to a degree
Copy !req
442. because his father
eased off him.
Copy !req
443. There was less pressure
for him to try and find a job
as Trey was recovering.
Copy !req
444. But that's not
how Trey saw things.
Copy !req
445. He felt that his father
had almost given up on him.
Copy !req
446. The first thing I see
is probably intoxicated.
Copy !req
447. And secondly, Trey was
really letting his viewers
in on the fact
Copy !req
448. that whether or not he felt
that way about himself,
Copy !req
449. he realized that society
felt that way about him.
Copy !req
450. He probably had a bit
of an inferiority complex
Copy !req
451. because he was
struggling in life
Copy !req
452. and his friends
and his brother
were moving on.
Copy !req
453. He was taking
a cocktail of drugs.
Copy !req
454. He was isolated,
he was marginalized.
Copy !req
455. So all of these things
would have massively
increased
Copy !req
456. the risk of deliberate
self-harm or suicide
as well as violence.
Copy !req
457. 2011, I decided
to reach out to Trey
on Facebook.
Copy !req
458. And I personally
believed that,
Copy !req
459. you know, I would ask Trey
about our prior relationship.
Copy !req
460. I did, sort of, want
to talk about that myself.
Copy !req
461. I'm not sure
if he wanted to.
Copy !req
462. We actually made plans
Copy !req
463. and exchanged numbers.
Copy !req
464. There's definitely
a part of me
Copy !req
465. that didn't know
what to expect.
Copy !req
466. So I felt a little anxious
about meeting Trey.
Copy !req
467. Right before we were
about to meet, Trey called.
Copy !req
468. He just sort of said,
"By the way, I'm sorry
for being a monster to you.
Copy !req
469. And I'm sorry.
Copy !req
470. I don't know if any of that
was consensual."
Copy !req
471. It just, sort of,
surprised me
Copy !req
472. because it was a question
that, kind of, popped up
out of nowhere.
Copy !req
473. I don't think
I had any doubts
Copy !req
474. that it was sincere
at the time.
Copy !req
475. He did seem remorseful.
Copy !req
476. It did seem different,
Copy !req
477. uh, surprisingly different,
uh, from the previous Trey.
Copy !req
478. But then he said
he's not good for people
and we can't meet.
Copy !req
479. Then we didn't really
talk after that.
Copy !req
480. Well, hi, everybody.
It's Mr. Anime here.
Copy !req
481. I got more subscribers
than ever.
Copy !req
482. I have more views than ever.
Copy !req
483. Trey had 4,000 subscribers
on YouTube.
Copy !req
484. Pretty big numbers
for that time.
Copy !req
485. But we all know
that in the background,
Copy !req
486. there's a lot going on
with Trey.
Copy !req
487. This is just an update video
to let you guys know that, uh,
Copy !req
488. I'm gonna
reward myself with probably
a two or three-week break.
Copy !req
489. "Mr. Anime
is planning something."
Copy !req
490. Planning what, exactly?
Copy !req
491. It's very vague.
Copy !req
492. So you'll have
to bear with me.
Copy !req
493. It was very telling.
Copy !req
494. Looking back at it now,
Copy !req
495. something big
was going to happen,
Copy !req
496. and none of us
were prepared for it.
Copy !req
497. Thanks for watching
my channel.
Copy !req
498. Shortly after lunch,
two members of the
Sesler family
Copy !req
499. came by the
Waller Police Department
Copy !req
500. and informed
one of my, uh, officers
Copy !req
501. that they were
unable to make contact
with the Sesler family.
Copy !req
502. For the second day now,
Copy !req
503. there's no answer
on any of the cell phones.
Copy !req
504. I had requested
that one of the officers
Copy !req
505. that knew the family
come to the house.
Copy !req
506. As soon as I stepped out
of my vehicle,
Copy !req
507. there was a sense in the air
that something was wrong.
Copy !req
508. Majorly wrong.
Copy !req
509. You couldn't see in the house
because all the blinds
were drawn.
Copy !req
510. In the back of the house,
there was a small window,
Copy !req
511. and the blinds
on that particular window
were slightly open.
Copy !req
512. I crawled up on a bench
and looked in,
Copy !req
513. and that's when I saw
a person inside on the floor
covered with blood.
Copy !req
514. And I knew we had a...
a real problem.
Copy !req
515. The first thought that I had
was that maybe we were
dealing with a suicide here.
Copy !req
516. We just knew we had a body.
Copy !req
517. And there was a lot of blood.
A lot of blood.
Copy !req
518. It was shocking what we found
when we made the entry
into the house.
Copy !req
519. We had no idea
what we were walking into.
Copy !req
520. The house looked like
a bomb had gone off in it,
Copy !req
521. and it was
just totally destroyed.
Copy !req
522. As we went down the hall,
and we found the bathroom
Copy !req
523. where I had seen the body
through the window,
Copy !req
524. the officer
was able to identify
Copy !req
525. who that person was
on the floor.
Copy !req
526. He said, "This is Mark.
This is, uh, Mark Sesler."
Copy !req
527. It became pretty apparent
pretty quick
Copy !req
528. that there was
some type of struggle
that had ensued here
Copy !req
529. because there's
bullet holes everywhere.
Copy !req
530. We went from possible suicide
Copy !req
531. to now we may
actually encounter a killer.
Copy !req
532. That's a totally different
frame of mind.
Copy !req
533. And then as we made our way
through the house,
Copy !req
534. we discovered
a man's body on the bed.
Copy !req
535. The officer
was able to specifically say
that that was Lawton Sesler.
Copy !req
536. We went out
in the garage and...
Copy !req
537. there was, kind of,
a blue plastic tarp.
Copy !req
538. And I lifted it up,
and it was, uh...
Copy !req
539. turned out to be Rhonda.
Copy !req
540. Shot multiple times.
Copy !req
541. We went back in the house.
Copy !req
542. That's when
we started realizing that
Copy !req
543. the knives stuck
in the cabinet.
Copy !req
544. Or the countertop
with the apple.
Copy !req
545. And all the different things
written on the cabinet doors.
Copy !req
546. That's when we realize
we're not just looking
for a killer.
Copy !req
547. We're dealing
with something evil here.
Copy !req
548. By the writings
we were starting to read
Copy !req
549. that were etched into walls,
Copy !req
550. we're building
a pretty strong case
Copy !req
551. that Trey would be
a definite person of interest.
Copy !req
552. The final thing
that led me to firmly believe
Copy !req
553. that he needed to be located
as soon as possible
Copy !req
554. was the inquiry
about the body armor.
Copy !req
555. My officer
at that time had said
Copy !req
556. he had received
a phone call from Trey
Copy !req
557. a few weeks prior to that
that was inquiring about
Copy !req
558. whether a civilian
could buy body armor.
Copy !req
559. If you add that
to what we see
in front of us,
Copy !req
560. and it would be an indicator
that he had other plans,
Copy !req
561. and that it was going
to meet with resistance.
Copy !req
562. There was
a very strong possibility
for further violence.
Copy !req
563. It was an urgency
in locating Trey.
Copy !req
564. When news broke
that the Seslers
had been murdered,
Copy !req
565. everybody was scared,
everybody was talking
about it.
Copy !req
566. Where is Trey?
Copy !req
567. Is he lurking somewhere?
Copy !req
568. Is there going to be
worse things that happen?
Copy !req
569. All hands were on deck
to find Trey
Copy !req
570. and make sure
that the community was safe.
Copy !req
571. We located Trey's car,
Copy !req
572. which was not
in Waller County,
Copy !req
573. but in the county,
uh, next to it.
Copy !req
574. The local Sheriff's Department
sent out their tactical team.
Copy !req
575. We don't know
what we're dealing with.
Copy !req
576. He may possibly
be armed and dangerous.
Copy !req
577. We arrive on location
and surround the house.
Copy !req
578. When Trey stepped out
on the front porch,
Copy !req
579. he had his Glock
in his hand.
Copy !req
580. He had
his Glock in his hand.
Copy !req
581. He just threw the pistol
on the ground and surrendered.
Copy !req
582. Why don't you sit right here,
okay, Trey?
Copy !req
583. Um...
Copy !req
584. He leveled
with the investigators,
with the Rangers
Copy !req
585. and told them
what he had done.
Copy !req
586. It's very disturbing,
the lack of remorse,
Copy !req
587. as you're recounting
how you've just murdered
Copy !req
588. the woman
that gave birth to you,
Copy !req
589. your father
and your big brother.
Copy !req
590. While Trey
was in custody,
Copy !req
591. there were so many things
that we were discovering
at the crime scene.
Copy !req
592. Handwritten notes,
Copy !req
593. some journals
that he had made.
Copy !req
594. We found this ammo
in the trunk of the car.
Copy !req
595. Rounds and rounds
of different caliber
ammunition.
Copy !req
596. Now there was
the realization
Copy !req
597. that he had
a much bigger plan.
Copy !req
598. The curtains
were ripped back,
Copy !req
599. and you could have
a better glimpse into
the mind of Trey Sesler.
Copy !req
600. It was truly terrifying.
Copy !req
601. He explained
how he was going to use these
different caliber weapons,
Copy !req
602. should he ever commit
a mass shooting like this.
Copy !req
603. His intention was to do
the biggest mass shooting
at a school
Copy !req
604. that had occurred
thus far in history.
Copy !req
605. We prevented a horrific act.
Copy !req
606. We arrested him that night,
and he couldn't do it
the next day.
Copy !req
607. That's fact.
Copy !req
608. These are the notes I made
the very first time I watched
Trey's confession.
Copy !req
609. I wrote down two words
and I put them in quotes,
Copy !req
610. "Desires attention."
Copy !req
611. That was realization
that he had quite a...
Copy !req
612. a life that we didn't know
anything about.
Copy !req
613. He made a specific point
to let the Rangers know
Copy !req
614. they could see his videos
all over YouTube.
Copy !req
615. Most people who commit
horrific offenses
Copy !req
616. can be pigeonholed
in some ways.
Copy !req
617. Either they have a clear
psychiatric diagnosis
or they fit a profile,
Copy !req
618. or they have
understandable motivations.
Copy !req
619. But to me,
Trey is extremely unusual
Copy !req
620. because it's just really hard
to fit him into any box.
Copy !req
621. But I do think
that there were
numerous risk factors.
Copy !req
622. He was young, he was male.
Copy !req
623. He was clearly
quite paranoid.
Copy !req
624. He probably had
a relative degree
of mental illness.
Copy !req
625. He's got
an obsession with guns.
Copy !req
626. He's taken
a cocktail of drugs,
Copy !req
627. he's already
quite marginalized
and socially isolated.
Copy !req
628. Dig deep with me today
into the recessions
Copy !req
629. and crevices
of the dark human mind.
Copy !req
630. So all of these things
would increase the risk factor
Copy !req
631. of somebody
acting out violently.
Copy !req
632. He is charged
with gunning down
his school teacher father,
Copy !req
633. his mother
and his older brother.
Copy !req
634. I'm reading on here
saying that he—
Copy !req
635. That not only did he—
Copy !req
636. I— I can't even
say this stuff.
Copy !req
637. Nobody wants
to believe that the people
they're friends with,
Copy !req
638. the people they know,
the people they love
Copy !req
639. could ever turn out
to be a monster.
Copy !req
640. To hear that someone
who inspired me to be
where I am now did this,
Copy !req
641. it just leaves me
with a really bad feeling.
Copy !req
642. No matter how much
you know someone online,
Copy !req
643. you only see
a certain part of them.
Copy !req
644. I remember
just being shocked,
Copy !req
645. just completely shocked
that it was him.
Copy !req
646. And knowing that
it could have been
so much worse, too.
Copy !req
647. And, and, you know,
it's such a small town
Copy !req
648. that we're all
well familiar with.
Copy !req
649. I mean, it was...
Copy !req
650. I think it was...
I think it hit hard.
Copy !req
651. I think
everybody believed at school
Copy !req
652. that the violent side
that Trey portrayed in films
was just a character.
Copy !req
653. He had
a lot of people fooled.
Copy !req
654. I try to think of all
the events that occurred
Copy !req
655. and was there ever any...
Copy !req
656. anything that
we could have done
Copy !req
657. to prevent this
and protect them.
Copy !req
658. Because I felt
a real responsibility
Copy !req
659. as the chief of police
of that town
Copy !req
660. to protect the people
who live there.
Copy !req
661. Of course,
there's no answers.
Copy !req
662. I live with it.
Copy !req
663. I live with it.
I've got the questions
that can't be answered.
Copy !req
664. I just wish
somebody would have brought
Trey's YouTube channel
Copy !req
665. to our attention
and said, "Hey.
Copy !req
666. He's here.
He's among you.
Copy !req
667. Watch out."
Copy !req
668. If we're going
to live in an online world,
Copy !req
669. then the world
is gonna have to take on
greater responsibility
Copy !req
670. tor the things
that they see online.
Copy !req
671. Trey is responsible
for what he did.
Copy !req
672. But I became a teacher
to make a difference.
Copy !req
673. I was talking with my...
Copy !req
674. I am gratified
and feel blessed
Copy !req
675. by the opportunity
to help the kids
I was able to help.
Copy !req
676. I feel bad about this one
going the way this went.
Copy !req
677. Thank you. Thank you.
Copy !req
678. I'll see you around.
Copy !req
679. I couldn't help him.
Copy !req
