1. I don't have to
prove anything to
Copy !req
2. any livin' human being.
Copy !req
3. Harley Race is
wrestling personified.
Copy !req
4. The man that when
you mention the word,
Copy !req
5. has rewritten every book
that's been wrote on it.
Copy !req
6. When you look at Harley, and
then you look at the man,
Copy !req
7. and then the two
start coming together,
Copy !req
8. then it's a perfect
picture of a badass heel.
Copy !req
9. And Harley Race
was that badass heel.
Copy !req
10. He was no gimmick.
He was Harley Race,
Copy !req
11. the toughest man on
God's green earth.
Copy !req
12. I've been shot at,
I've been stabbed...
Copy !req
13. I just looked at it I must
have been doing
Copy !req
14. my job fairly well,
right?
Copy !req
15. If there's one
man who connects
Copy !req
16. wrestling's modern era to
its earliest days,
Copy !req
17. whose legacy in the
Squared Circle stands as
Copy !req
18. a monument to the
evolution of the sport,
Copy !req
19. and who epitomizes the ideal
of a fighting champion,
Copy !req
20. that man is
Harley Race.
Copy !req
21. All mortal men are
gonna bow to the king.
Copy !req
22. I knew all about Harley Race
before I'd even
Copy !req
23. seen a Harley Race match.
Copy !req
24. His legend preceded him.
Copy !req
25. Harley Race has literally
been wrestling all his life.
Copy !req
26. Earned his first
paycheque in wrestling
Copy !req
27. before he got his
driver's license.
Copy !req
28. As Harley's violence
spilled out of the ring,
Copy !req
29. the line between person
and persona became blurred.
Copy !req
30. The police came.
Copy !req
31. That's when things
went downhill.
Copy !req
32. And I just wanted
away from him.
Copy !req
33. As a lifetime of
tragedies and injuries
Copy !req
34. took their toll
on the man.
Copy !req
35. And he was passed out on the
floor in a fetal position.
Copy !req
36. It was a pretty
traumatic event.
Copy !req
37. The boating accidents,
the car wrecks,
Copy !req
38. the in-ring accidents...
Copy !req
39. the human body
is not built to
Copy !req
40. undergo punishment
like that.
Copy !req
41. In a land of tough guys,
Copy !req
42. he was considered the
king tough guy.
Copy !req
43. He's given his body and
his life to this business.
Copy !req
44. And he did what he
had to do to survive.
Copy !req
45. Woah.
Copy !req
46. I've got two rods and
eight screws in my back.
Copy !req
47. I've got an artificial hip.
Copy !req
48. I got four metal screws
in my right knee,
Copy !req
49. and two braces and
12 pins in this arm.
Copy !req
50. How do you
quantify toughness?
Copy !req
51. Is a guy tough because he can
beat you in a wrestling match?
Copy !req
52. Or is a guy tough because
he's just a badass
Copy !req
53. street fighter and he can
pull your eyeball out?
Copy !req
54. Because when you think
about Harley Race,
Copy !req
55. the cumulative effect of
the thousands and tens of
Copy !req
56. thousands of slams and falls
and bumps on hard rings,
Copy !req
57. concrete floors and
sawdust floors in a barn
Copy !req
58. or at a carnival...
Copy !req
59. Harley Race did
all of that.
Copy !req
60. He was legendarily tough not
only for his ability to
Copy !req
61. beat people up, but also
because he gained a mystique
Copy !req
62. as somebody that couldn't
physically be hurt.
Copy !req
63. No matter what you did
to Harley Race or
Copy !req
64. what he did to himself,
you couldn't stop him.
Copy !req
65. I'm gonna
hurt you somehow!
Copy !req
66. If I gotta do it
that way, fine!
Copy !req
67. You have insulted
Copy !req
68. the World
Heavyweight Champion!
Copy !req
69. Agh!
Copy !req
70. You better believe I was
inspired by Harley Race.
Copy !req
71. He was the first guy I saw
to take a backdrop outside
Copy !req
72. the ring and a suplex
outside the ring.
Copy !req
73. And he was doing this as the
traveling World Champion.
Copy !req
74. Harley was among the very
first to do table spots.
Copy !req
75. I mean, he was
before his time.
Copy !req
76. Heading in full speed,
going face first over
Copy !req
77. the top turnbuckle,
that's Harley Race.
Copy !req
78. Getting your arms
caught up in the ropes,
Copy !req
79. that's Harley Race.
Copy !req
80. Bombs away!
Ah!
Copy !req
81. Right to the
side of the head.
Copy !req
82. One of Harley's major
wrestling moves was
Copy !req
83. a diving headbutt, where
he'd come off the top rope
Copy !req
84. and land headfirst on
his opponent's head.
Copy !req
85. You have to imagine
a man, 280 pounds,
Copy !req
86. jumping off of a five foot
top rope and coming down
Copy !req
87. completely on his
chest and his belly,
Copy !req
88. while he's taking his
forehead and driving it
Copy !req
89. into another individual.
Copy !req
90. The skill and the amazement
of it was that it looked like
Copy !req
91. every time Harley did it,
he was killing guys.
Copy !req
92. But in all reality, he was
barely touching 'em.
Copy !req
93. As a performer,
as a wrestler...
Copy !req
94. it just blows your mind,
because that's what you want.
Copy !req
95. That's the 'it' factor
of pro wrestling,
Copy !req
96. is make it look like we're
killing him, but not.
Copy !req
97. He has left an
indelible footprint,
Copy !req
98. because he passed on his
style to people like me
Copy !req
99. who passed it
on to others.
Copy !req
100. The stars of today are
borrowing liberally from the
Copy !req
101. Harley Race catalog,
whether they realize it or not.
Copy !req
102. One of the fiercest men to
ever lace a pair of boots,
Copy !req
103. Harley Race was a wrestler's
wrestler who began
Copy !req
104. his journey to the
ring as a teenager.
Copy !req
105. Harley Race grew up poor
on a farm in Missouri.
Copy !req
106. My name is Jim Cornette,
and I've been a fan,
Copy !req
107. an admirer, and a colleague
of Harley Race's.
Copy !req
108. He had to work from the
time he was a, a young boy,
Copy !req
109. and that instilled in him the
work ethic that he carried
Copy !req
110. with him for the
rest of his life.
Copy !req
111. Harley was a good kid.
Copy !req
112. We liked each other
right off, third grade on.
Copy !req
113. We hunted, fished together,
wrestled together.
Copy !req
114. My name is Daniel Keever.
Copy !req
115. I went to school
with Harley Race,
Copy !req
116. met him in the third grade.
Copy !req
117. He would let people
hit him as hard as
Copy !req
118. they could in the stomach.
I mean, these are big guys.
Copy !req
119. He'd get up and he
wouldn't say nothing.
Copy !req
120. If they wanted to do
it again, he'd let 'em.
Copy !req
121. I supposed in his mind,
Copy !req
122. he was building himself
to be a wrestler.
Copy !req
123. We used to watch all
the old wrestlers.
Copy !req
124. Bob Brown.
Sonny Meyers.
Copy !req
125. Yukon Eric.
Copy !req
126. We played hooky one
Friday afternoon.
Copy !req
127. Every time Harley and
I'd go somewhere,
Copy !req
128. he'd wanna, "Come on,
let's wrestle a little while.
Copy !req
129. Let's wrestle a little while."
He, well, on Monday,
Copy !req
130. Principal called us
in the office.
Copy !req
131. He's: "I want to know why
you left here." Harley said,
Copy !req
132. "Well," he said,
"a good day to wrestle."
Copy !req
133. Harley was a part
of the original
Copy !req
134. —- around and
find out era.
Copy !req
135. Oh, God!
Good grief!
Copy !req
136. My name's Trevor Murdoch.
Copy !req
137. I'm a two time NWA World
Heavyweight Champion,
Copy !req
138. three time WWE World
Tag Team Champion,
Copy !req
139. and I was trained
by Harley Race.
Copy !req
140. The reason, like I know
these stories is because
Copy !req
141. I've heard 'em from
Harley himself.
Copy !req
142. So the principal gave him
a big slap in the face.
Copy !req
143. Harley knocked him out.
Copy !req
144. He hit the floor
and Harley hit the door.
Copy !req
145. He was a fighter as a kid.
Copy !req
146. And then that's when he
wanted to start wrestling.
Copy !req
147. My name is Evonne
Hedbávny Race.
Copy !req
148. I was married to a
handsome Harley Race,
Copy !req
149. the eight times World
Champion wrestler,
Copy !req
150. for 24 years.
Copy !req
151. When he was 14 years old,
he left home because
Copy !req
152. his family couldn't afford
to keep him up.
Copy !req
153. He got a job on a
farm out in the
Copy !req
154. middle of nowhere,
Missouri.
Copy !req
155. And it just so happened
that that farm was
Copy !req
156. owned by the
Zbyszko Brothers.
Copy !req
157. Stanislaus Zbyszko and
his brother, Wladek,
Copy !req
158. the two of them
were iconic names.
Copy !req
159. Stanis was a former
World Heavyweight
Copy !req
160. Wrestling Champion.
Copy !req
161. Harley found out
they were wrestlers,
Copy !req
162. and they offered to train him
in exchange for his farm work.
Copy !req
163. It amounted to
legalized torture.
Copy !req
164. They would stretch him.
Copy !req
165. They would beat him up.
Copy !req
166. They would put him in holes
he couldn't escape from to
Copy !req
167. see if he was tough enough to
come back and ask for more.
Copy !req
168. Because in their generation,
a professional wrestler,
Copy !req
169. they knew the other guy had
the ability to grab one of
Copy !req
170. their appendages—
and break it instantly.
Copy !req
171. It was the most primitive
form of hand-to-hand,
Copy !req
172. man-to-man combat.
Copy !req
173. And that's what
Harley learned,
Copy !req
174. and that served him well when
he went to the carnivals.
Copy !req
175. That was the
thing back then.
Copy !req
176. That's how you got
started in the business,
Copy !req
177. was on a carnival.
Copy !req
178. Yes, that's true, Marty.
Copy !req
179. I'll wrestle anybody
in the business,
Copy !req
180. any size or weight
at any time.
Copy !req
181. I'm Eddie Sharkey.
Copy !req
182. I've been in the
business a million years,
Copy !req
183. and Harley Race was
one of my best friends.
Copy !req
184. There's a flying head
scissors by Sharkey.
Copy !req
185. We make three, four
dollars a match,
Copy !req
186. which wasn't much money,
but at the end of the night,
Copy !req
187. it, it, it come out okay.
Copy !req
188. At the carnivals in the 50s,
one of the big tents
Copy !req
189. had a champion wrestler.
Copy !req
190. And the carnival barker,
he would do the spiel.
Copy !req
191. "We'll give X amount of
dollars if you can stay
Copy !req
192. 5 minutes with our
champion wrestler."
Copy !req
193. You had truck drivers,
you had farmers,
Copy !req
194. you had butchers,
you had a variety of guys
Copy !req
195. with a couple of drinks
in 'em, who would
Copy !req
196. get up and challenge
the carnival wrestler.
Copy !req
197. And there were
shoot matches,
Copy !req
198. which are real matches,
and then there were works.
Copy !req
199. When they couldn't get a
challenger from the crowd
Copy !req
200. to challenge the
carnival wrestler,
Copy !req
201. there was a plant
in the audience.
Copy !req
202. But he would look like
one of the locals,
Copy !req
203. and Harley played this
part a number of times too.
Copy !req
204. And then people would get
behind one of their own.
Copy !req
205. As he said, "I can
take that guy."
Copy !req
206. And then Harley would
get in the ring,
Copy !req
207. and he would work with
the carnival wrestler.
Copy !req
208. But if Harley was the
carnival wrestler
Copy !req
209. taking challenges,
it was a shoot.
Copy !req
210. And Harley'd have to go in
there and do whatever
Copy !req
211. he had to, to win.
And he's this 16 year old kid.
Copy !req
212. When you're there...
Copy !req
213. That's why he needed to
come up with shortcuts,
Copy !req
214. like the headbutt to
the bridge of the nose.
Copy !req
215. Or the double wristlock,
where you could take a guy's
Copy !req
216. shoulder out of joint if he
didn't give up immediately.
Copy !req
217. It was always dangerous,
Copy !req
218. but that's how
Harley survived.
Copy !req
219. He just had to fight five or
six strange guys every day.
Copy !req
220. On the carnival circuit,
Harley goes to work for
Copy !req
221. legendary promoter
Gust Karras
Copy !req
222. who puts Harley on the road
with one of the biggest men
Copy !req
223. in the history of the
wrestling business.
Copy !req
224. Happy Humphrey was
a pro wrestler
Copy !req
225. in the late 50s and 60s.
Copy !req
226. His real name was
William J. Cobb.
Copy !req
227. In Happy Humphrey's
pro wrestling career,
Copy !req
228. he was somewhere in the
range of 700 pounds,
Copy !req
229. and Harley Race was chosen
to be Happy Humphrey's
Copy !req
230. driver, and valet,
and attendant.
Copy !req
231. He had to drive Happy
Humphrey to the shows in a
Copy !req
232. specially built Cadillac,
and he had to make sure that
Copy !req
233. Humphrey's needs were met
after the matches
Copy !req
234. which one of those things
entailed bathing
Copy !req
235. Happy Humphrey.
Copy !req
236. Happy Humphrey would lay
down on the ground naked and
Copy !req
237. Harley Race would take a
bottle of liquid soap, a mop,
Copy !req
238. and a garden hose,
and basically clean
Copy !req
239. Happy Humphrey off, so they
could get back in the car
Copy !req
240. and go to the next town
without enduring the
Copy !req
241. unending disaster of B.O.
Copy !req
242. - That's paying your dues.
Copy !req
243. In 1960, at just
17 years of age,
Copy !req
244. Harley marries a single
mother named Vivian Jones,
Copy !req
245. who is soon pregnant with
Harley's first child.
Copy !req
246. Then,
tragedy quickly strikes.
Copy !req
247. It was around Christmas time.
Copy !req
248. He had his wife in
the car with him,
Copy !req
249. she was pregnant
with his first child.
Copy !req
250. Three o'clock in the morning,
they're driving down
Copy !req
251. this lonely road,
snow on the ground.
Copy !req
252. There's a tractor trailer
truck in front of 'em,
Copy !req
253. jack knifes, gets into
the snowbank.
Copy !req
254. Harley's car rams
into the truck.
Copy !req
255. She's killed instantly
from a head injury.
Copy !req
256. And he's severely injured...
Copy !req
257. to the point where when the
people picked him up in the
Copy !req
258. ambulance, they declared
him dead as well,
Copy !req
259. and then saw him move,
and that's how they knew
Copy !req
260. he was still alive.
Copy !req
261. And when he was
hospitalized,
Copy !req
262. they were gonna amputate
Harley's right leg.
Copy !req
263. Wasn't even
20 years old yet.
Copy !req
264. And the doctors told Harley
he'd never walk again.
Copy !req
265. A car accident on
Christmas Eve has killed
Copy !req
266. Harley Race's
pregnant wife.
Copy !req
267. Somehow,
Harley is holding on,
Copy !req
268. but concerned doctors
want to amputate his leg.
Copy !req
269. Kansas promoter Gust Karras,
when he heard about
Copy !req
270. the accident, he checked
on Harley, and said,
Copy !req
271. "No, let's not do this."
Copy !req
272. "He's gonna walk out of this
hospital," which he did.
Copy !req
273. They did a surgery,
saved the leg.
Copy !req
274. In effect, saved
Harley's career.
Copy !req
275. And from there,
for the rest of his life,
Copy !req
276. Harley hated Christmas.
Copy !req
277. Several years
after the crash,
Copy !req
278. as Harley continues
his wrestling career,
Copy !req
279. a chance encounter introduces
a new woman into his life.
Copy !req
280. I was a flight attendant.
Copy !req
281. Harley kept
calling me all day.
Copy !req
282. "How about if I take you out
for a piece of blueberry pie?"
Copy !req
283. I thought, "Wow,
that's a neat way."
Copy !req
284. And I said, "Okay."
Copy !req
285. And we went out, had the
pie, had the coffee...
Copy !req
286. he had his blond hair,
and I wasn't used to that.
Copy !req
287. I came from a little town,
and I wanted a family
Copy !req
288. and I wanted
a home life, and...
Copy !req
289. And my mother
and my father,
Copy !req
290. they were very upset.
My dad said,
Copy !req
291. "I don't want you
seeing him anymore."
Copy !req
292. But I kept on.
It was like a magnet.
Copy !req
293. We were on our way from
Minneapolis to Duluth,
Copy !req
294. Minnesota, and he said there
was a bag in the back seat.
Copy !req
295. You pick it up and look at it,
and it was a diamond ring.
Copy !req
296. So I always knew
I'd marry a athlete,
Copy !req
297. but I didn't know I was going
to be marrying into wrestling.
Copy !req
298. Marrying Evonna despite
her parent's wishes,
Copy !req
299. Harley gets back
to the ring.
Copy !req
300. When Harley first teamed
up with Larry Hennig,
Copy !req
301. he had bleach blond hair.
Copy !req
302. So, they adopted the nom de
plumes of 'Handsome'
Copy !req
303. Harley Race and
'Pretty Boy' Larry Hennig.
Copy !req
304. In the mid 60s, guys as
big and rough as them,
Copy !req
305. they didn't have
bleached blond hair,
Copy !req
306. so it was a way to get heat
with the fans and it worked.
Copy !req
307. He chose to be a villain.
I didn't like it because
Copy !req
308. everybody booed him,
and didn't like him,
Copy !req
309. but he was good
at what he did.
Copy !req
310. Between the size and
the strength of Hennig,
Copy !req
311. and the speed and the
athleticism of Harley Race,
Copy !req
312. they had a tremendous run
in several of the major
Copy !req
313. territories as the top
heel team in wrestling.
Copy !req
314. When we had our son,
Copy !req
315. and we traveled a
lot together...
Copy !req
316. when we'd go to matches,
I would ask Harley if it was
Copy !req
317. going to be a bloodbath
at the wrestling match
Copy !req
318. or, is it gonna be clean?
Copy !req
319. If it was gonna
be a bloodbath,
Copy !req
320. my mom and I were probably
going to a movie
Copy !req
321. or to miniature
golf that night.
Copy !req
322. My name is Justin Race,
and my father is
Copy !req
323. the king, 'Handsome'
Harley Race.
Copy !req
324. I got to see him
wrestle a lot,
Copy !req
325. and the chairs start flying,
and the world title belt
Copy !req
326. starts hitting people in the
heads and this and that,
Copy !req
327. and dad's gushing blood
out, stumbling around.
Copy !req
328. I mean, it was scary.
Copy !req
329. But it was happy then.
Copy !req
330. And he was a kind person.
Copy !req
331. He was kind to everybody,
he was well-mannered...
Copy !req
332. it was fun being with him.
Copy !req
333. Touring arenas, sports halls,
and bars across America,
Copy !req
334. Harley's status as a
legitimate tough guy is
Copy !req
335. frequently put to the test.
Copy !req
336. Harley, he sees this man
being very aggressive
Copy !req
337. with this woman.
Copy !req
338. Just berating her,
getting handsy with her.
Copy !req
339. So Harley goes over there to
confront the guy about it,
Copy !req
340. to tell him to back
off or leave her alone,
Copy !req
341. what Harley doesn't know is
the guy's friend is behind
Copy !req
342. Harley and has a knife, and
goes up behind Harley
Copy !req
343. and stabs him three
times in the back.
Copy !req
344. The guy takes off and
the other guy takes off.
Copy !req
345. Harley has to go
to the hospital.
Copy !req
346. Harley knew quite
a few people,
Copy !req
347. was able to find out
where the guy lived at,
Copy !req
348. and got a pistol and
went by the guy's house.
Copy !req
349. Now I had heard this story
from somebody else and
Copy !req
350. asked Harley about it.
Copy !req
351. He looks at me and he goes,
"It wasn't a pistol.
Copy !req
352. It was a machine gun."
Copy !req
353. And that was enough for me
to know that it wasn't a lie.
Copy !req
354. As Harley's legend grows,
so does his busy schedule,
Copy !req
355. keeping him on the road for
days and even weeks at a time.
Copy !req
356. It was always wrestling,
wrestling, and wrestling.
Copy !req
357. And he didn't have
time for family.
Copy !req
358. He was a good father,
but he was only home
Copy !req
359. three times a month.
Copy !req
360. What I hated was when
he'd stop after the
Copy !req
361. wrestling match, he got a
six pack of beers,
Copy !req
362. and he started right
then and there, drinking.
Copy !req
363. When his first
wife was killed,
Copy !req
364. he was only going
30 miles an hour.
Copy !req
365. He never drove slow since.
Copy !req
366. He didn't care.
Copy !req
367. If the speed limit said 70,
he thought it meant 90 and
Copy !req
368. he'd be flying
down the highway.
Copy !req
369. And sure enough we'd
see a cop and they...
Copy !req
370. you would watch them
power walk to
Copy !req
371. Harley's vehicle.
Angry.
Copy !req
372. Who is this person
driving 90 miles an hour?
Copy !req
373. And they'd get to
the window and go,
Copy !req
374. "I need your license
and reg-
Copy !req
375. Harley? Harley Race"?
Copy !req
376. "Okay, Harley.
Copy !req
377. Take it easy, slow down."
Copy !req
378. That got me mad too.
Copy !req
379. He believed, 100%,
he was the man.
Copy !req
380. Inside the ring and
outside the ring.
Copy !req
381. Sometimes they realized who
he was and didn't bother him,
Copy !req
382. sometimes they didn't know
who he was and tested him.
Copy !req
383. And it was a mistake
every single time.
Copy !req
384. He knew exactly what
he wanted to do,
Copy !req
385. when he wanted to do it,
and how he wanted to do it.
Copy !req
386. I just don't know if Harley
knew how to be anything else.
Copy !req
387. A rising star across the
territories with his
Copy !req
388. tag team partner,
Larry Hennig,
Copy !req
389. Harley Race emerges
as a singles competitor
Copy !req
390. after Hennig
breaks his leg,
Copy !req
391. setting the stage
for a legendary run.
Copy !req
392. When the Hennig-Race
tag team split up,
Copy !req
393. Harley got a reputation
as a top guy,
Copy !req
394. and that's where he first
got into contention in the
Copy !req
395. NWA promoters' eyes
for being a
Copy !req
396. World Heavyweight
Champion someday.
Copy !req
397. Though the NWA title
changed hands in the ring,
Copy !req
398. the champion was actually
chosen by committee-
Copy !req
399. selected for
their popularity,
Copy !req
400. trustworthiness and ability
to protect themselves
Copy !req
401. if a match goes off script.
Copy !req
402. A stunning turnabout
here at Comiskey Park!
Copy !req
403. In 1973, the reigning
NWA World
Copy !req
404. Heavyweight Champion
was Dory Funk Jr.
Copy !req
405. And his father, Dory Funk Sr.
was one of the most prominent
Copy !req
406. promoters in the National
Wrestling Alliance.
Copy !req
407. For a long time, there has
been quite a feud
Copy !req
408. between the Briscos
and the Funks.
Copy !req
409. Jack had gone
for years, you know,
Copy !req
410. as the number one contender,
and it was time for
Copy !req
411. Dory Jr. to step down.
Copy !req
412. Hello everybody,
I'm Gerald Brisco,
Copy !req
413. Jerry Brisco
to a lot of ya.
Copy !req
414. I'm a WWE Hall of Famer.
Copy !req
415. I'm a 50-year veteran
of pro wrestling.
Copy !req
416. Jerry Brisco clearly
out-thinking
Copy !req
417. his opponent thus far.
Copy !req
418. The rumor was that
the old man, Dory Sr.,
Copy !req
419. did not want Dory losing
it to another babyface.
Copy !req
420. And course Jack
was a babyface.
Copy !req
421. But if he lost to a bad guy
who was a cheater,
Copy !req
422. well, that's
something different.
Copy !req
423. So they put him in the
ring with Harley Race.
Copy !req
424. This served two purposes.
Copy !req
425. Number one, he was going
to lose to a guy that was
Copy !req
426. a noted heel, a rule
breaker, a cheater.
Copy !req
427. But, he was also gonna
be wrestling a guy who,
Copy !req
428. if it came to it, if there
was not cooperation,
Copy !req
429. would be able to
legitimately take the
Copy !req
430. World Heavyweight
Championship in the ring.
Copy !req
431. Count of one!
Two! Three!
Copy !req
432. History has been made!
Copy !req
433. Harley's first title win
in 1973 really is
Copy !req
434. what brought his name to
national prominence
Copy !req
435. from coast to coast.
Copy !req
436. And there were champions
that held the NWA title
Copy !req
437. longer than Harley did,
but Harley, at the time,
Copy !req
438. was the most constant
champion from the
Copy !req
439. early 70s through
the mid 80s.
Copy !req
440. It was more often than not
you would see Harley
Copy !req
441. holding the belt,
and he became
Copy !req
442. kind of synonymous with it.
Copy !req
443. That's exactly why Harley
was there, it was just,
Copy !req
444. just personify that image of
the NWA belt that
Copy !req
445. you got to be a tough
son of a bitch.
Copy !req
446. He was wrestling
an hour a night.
Copy !req
447. One hour matches,
Copy !req
448. night after night
after night.
Copy !req
449. As an eight-time
NWA champion,
Copy !req
450. Harley Race took
on all comers,
Copy !req
451. establishing his reputation
as the most fearsome man
Copy !req
452. in the business.
Copy !req
453. And what a lot of
people don't know,
Copy !req
454. those hour long matches...
Copy !req
455. it isn't like
wrestling today,
Copy !req
456. where a lot of guys plan out
their matches in the back.
Copy !req
457. How could anybody go through
the various injuries and
Copy !req
458. accidents and things
that he had done,
Copy !req
459. and still be
able to do that?
Copy !req
460. That's why all the guys
looked at him like...
Copy !req
461. this guy can't
be human.
Copy !req
462. Harley was so important to
the Central States territory
Copy !req
463. in Kansas City that he was
allowed to buy into the
Copy !req
464. territory and actually
own part of the promotion.
Copy !req
465. I encouraged him.
Copy !req
466. I knew he was good
at what he did.
Copy !req
467. The NWA World Champion's
road schedule was probably
Copy !req
468. the most gruelling in all of
professional wrestling.
Copy !req
469. Nobody traveled as
many different places,
Copy !req
470. worked in as many different
territories for as many
Copy !req
471. different promoters, in as
many different countries,
Copy !req
472. as the NWA
World Champion.
Copy !req
473. And there were literally
almost no days off.
Copy !req
474. He'd just fly
from city to city,
Copy !req
475. and when he could have
24 hours he'd fly home,
Copy !req
476. and then back out
on the road again.
Copy !req
477. And it was a horrible,
horrible life to live
Copy !req
478. in the limelight.
Copy !req
479. Well, especially because
he was who he was,
Copy !req
480. and how he was, you know,
he treated everybody
Copy !req
481. like gold except
with me. I mean,
Copy !req
482. he bought me Porsches
and mink coats
Copy !req
483. and things like that.
Well, that doesn't buy love.
Copy !req
484. This is Barbara Clarey
on special assignment,
Copy !req
485. reporting from
Tampa, Florida.
Copy !req
486. Across the street is
the Hyatt Regency Hotel,
Copy !req
487. where at this moment a
special meeting of the
Copy !req
488. National Wrestling Alliance
Board of Directors
Copy !req
489. is in progress.
Copy !req
490. In 1983, the NWA decides
Harley Race will
Copy !req
491. lose his championship
to Ric Flair at a
Copy !req
492. massive event
branded 'Starrcade.'
Copy !req
493. I think that I want to
call my quest for
Copy !req
494. the World Heavyweight
Championship,
Copy !req
495. 'A Flair for the Gold.'
Copy !req
496. Ric was as hot a babyface
as babyfaces can get.
Copy !req
497. Harley and Ric were
perfect foes at that time.
Copy !req
498. Ric, the young,
upcoming, cocky,
Copy !req
499. flamboyant type deal
with the
Copy !req
500. raw bone badass,
Harley Race.
Copy !req
501. A lot of people have thought
they put Harley Race
Copy !req
502. exactly where they
wanted him.
Copy !req
503. Well seven times around
Copy !req
504. I proved every
one of you wrong.
Copy !req
505. And I'll guarantee ya
this in Greensboro, Flair,
Copy !req
506. I'm gonna prove
you wrong.
Copy !req
507. The match is meant to mark a
generational changing of
Copy !req
508. the guard, but rival
promoter Vince McMahon
Copy !req
509. has other ideas.
Copy !req
510. Hello everyone. This is
Vince McMahon in the
Copy !req
511. studios of the
USA Cable Network.
Copy !req
512. We wholeheartedly welcome
you to the premiere of
Copy !req
513. All American Wrestling.
Copy !req
514. In 1983, Vince McMahon Jr.
had just moved from
Copy !req
515. becoming the announcer
for the WWF,
Copy !req
516. his father's company,
Copy !req
517. to the owner of the World
Wrestling Federation.
Copy !req
518. And most of the promoters
didn't know yet,
Copy !req
519. but in the next
couple of months,
Copy !req
520. he was going to start a
national expansion of the WWF
Copy !req
521. that would see him moving
into all of their territories
Copy !req
522. and trying to sign away
all their top talent.
Copy !req
523. Ric Flair was over,
and Vince, he knew,
Copy !req
524. that when Harley dropped
the world title to him,
Copy !req
525. that Ric was gonna be
the next big thing.
Copy !req
526. And Vince was trying to do
whatever he could
Copy !req
527. to shut it down.
Copy !req
528. Just hours before the NWA's
massive Starrcade event,
Copy !req
529. Vince McMahon meets in secret
with Champion Harley Race
Copy !req
530. in an attempt to
sabotage the show.
Copy !req
531. Vince laid out an
opportunity for my father
Copy !req
532. to come over
to the WWF...
Copy !req
533. if dad would not
go to Starrcade.
Copy !req
534. And for an extraordinary
amount of money,
Copy !req
535. back then,
$250,000.
Copy !req
536. I think there's an element
of truth to all of that.
Copy !req
537. But if Harley had
never lost the title,
Copy !req
538. then how they gonna
explain that to anybody?
Copy !req
539. And whoever they made
champion after that,
Copy !req
540. the fans would not have
looked at them as legitimate.
Copy !req
541. That could have put
you out of business.
Copy !req
542. And of course Harley he
said, "Hell no,
Copy !req
543. I'm not gonna do that,
I gave my word."
Copy !req
544. I was with Harley
for ten years.
Copy !req
545. You know, when you spend
that much time with Harley,
Copy !req
546. you get comfortable, you
start asking him questions
Copy !req
547. of stories that other
people have, have told.
Copy !req
548. Or, or rumours.
And so, of course,
Copy !req
549. that was one of the
questions I had to ask, was,
Copy !req
550. you know, "Have you and Vince
ever got into a fight"?
Copy !req
551. Apparently Vince
wasn't very happy.
Copy !req
552. Vince suddenly gets that
look on his face and turns
Copy !req
553. around and tries to leg dive
Harley and take him down.
Copy !req
554. According to Harley,
he just puts him in
Copy !req
555. a front face lock,
hooks his arms,
Copy !req
556. and stands up
with him.
Copy !req
557. Basically puts
Vince to sleep.
Copy !req
558. Drops him on the floor.
Copy !req
559. Harley got him
into a choke hold.
Copy !req
560. He said, "I wish I would
have wrung his neck."
Copy !req
561. Because he was driving us
out of business.
Copy !req
562. He could have broke his
neck. I mean, he even
Copy !req
563. told me, he's like, "I could
have ended all this right then."
Copy !req
564. Just-
Copy !req
565. Fans, I'm Bob Caudle,
along with Gordon Solie,
Copy !req
566. and we're delighted
to be bringing you,
Copy !req
567. wherever you are,
live from Greensboro,
Copy !req
568. North Carolina,
Starrcade '83.
Copy !req
569. This is the wrestling
event of all time.
Copy !req
570. Fortunately, the main event
of Starrcade '83 did come off.
Copy !req
571. It did turn out to be the
biggest gate of
Copy !req
572. any NWA show
previously in history.
Copy !req
573. Flair did win the
title from Harley.
Copy !req
574. He's got him down-
one, two, three!
Copy !req
575. He did it!
He did it.
Copy !req
576. Ric Flair has just defeated
Copy !req
577. 7 times World
Heavyweight Champion,
Copy !req
578. Harley Race.
Copy !req
579. Vince's failure to persuade
Harley to leave the NWA and
Copy !req
580. join the WWF isn't McMahon's
only attempt to take over
Copy !req
581. Harley's Kansas
City territory.
Copy !req
582. When Vince McMahon started
taking his live WWF events
Copy !req
583. all across the country in
other promoters' backyards,
Copy !req
584. running their buildings,
running their towns...
Copy !req
585. none of 'em appreciated it,
but most of 'em
Copy !req
586. didn't confront
him personally.
Copy !req
587. Harley Race did.
Copy !req
588. When the WWF went
to Kansas City,
Copy !req
589. Harley showed up.
That was his town.
Copy !req
590. He had owned it,
pioneered it,
Copy !req
591. and he wanted to know why
these son of a bitches were
Copy !req
592. coming trying to take his
fans and ticket money away.
Copy !req
593. Now, Hogan, Hulk Hogan
has told some stories.
Copy !req
594. You shall feel the
wrath of Hulkamania!
Copy !req
595. This is where
the power lies!
Copy !req
596. All right, get ready.
Copy !req
597. They were promoting big
that Hulk Hogan is
Copy !req
598. the World Champion.
He is the man.
Copy !req
599. What I heard was that Harley
had a pistol in his belt and
Copy !req
600. he was looking for Hogan.
He wanted to find out.
Copy !req
601. "You're the World Champ,
let's find out."
Copy !req
602. And that's the second,
third and
Copy !req
603. fourthhand on
stuff I heard,
Copy !req
604. but Harley come in and
everybody held their breath
Copy !req
605. for like a half hour,
you know-
Copy !req
606. to see what was
gonna happen.
Copy !req
607. Harley went round looking
for Hogan, couldn't find him,
Copy !req
608. so he proceeded to
light the ring on fire.
Copy !req
609. So that was him
protecting his business.
Copy !req
610. That was him protecting the
business of Kansas City.
Copy !req
611. I don't doubt
it for a second.
Copy !req
612. Even if it didn't happen,
does it really matter?
Copy !req
613. It's something that
could've happened.
Copy !req
614. Despite Harley's best efforts
to ward off Vince's invasion,
Copy !req
615. the WWF's nationwide
expansion cannot be stopped.
Copy !req
616. Harley bought into
Kansas City and
Copy !req
617. the territories were dying.
Copy !req
618. Vince come along and offered
him a pocketful of change
Copy !req
619. and he grabbed it.
Copy !req
620. But he knew that that's
what he had to do
Copy !req
621. in his next phase
of his career.
Copy !req
622. He knew Vince
was taking over.
Copy !req
623. Vince liked tough guys,
Copy !req
624. and Vince liked
veterans who had
Copy !req
625. accomplished things in
the wrestling business.
Copy !req
626. So, I think he
respected Harley,
Copy !req
627. but he thought he
was too "rastlin".
Copy !req
628. He was just "too plain".
Copy !req
629. Nobody wants to
see a tough guy wrestle.
Copy !req
630. They want to see colour
and character and
Copy !req
631. ice cream bars.
Copy !req
632. That was what Vince
was going for,
Copy !req
633. and Harley was the
antithesis of that.
Copy !req
634. So when Harley got there,
they wanted to make him the
Copy !req
635. original 'King of the Ring.'
Copy !req
636. That character and that...
that attitude.
Copy !req
637. I crown you,
and you only,
Copy !req
638. the King Handsome
Harley Race.
Copy !req
639. Did he like it?
I doubt it.
Copy !req
640. He never, never
bitched about it
Copy !req
641. 'cause that wasn't
Harley's style.
Copy !req
642. Whatever Harley
was handed,
Copy !req
643. Harley would make it
work for Harley.
Copy !req
644. The WWF at that time
Copy !req
645. was appealing to kids
who, they had no idea
Copy !req
646. who Harley Race was-
they're kids.
Copy !req
647. And they see an older guy
that's not particularly
Copy !req
648. impressive, dressed up
in this King outfit...
Copy !req
649. Enh...
Copy !req
650. And the older fans who knew
Harley, they were like,
Copy !req
651. "Wow, this is what it's
come down to."
Copy !req
652. Now we realize, you know,
Harley at that point
Copy !req
653. was very methodical,
and I enjoyed seeing a
Copy !req
654. guy of that age taking off
from the top rope,
Copy !req
655. dropping headbutts
from the top.
Copy !req
656. Here he comes down from
his throne, headbutt!
Copy !req
657. Big roundhouse right.
Copy !req
658. - Oh!
Copy !req
659. Taking the big bumps still,
like, he made it work.
Copy !req
660. He was there to
make a paycheque.
Copy !req
661. He was there to take
care of his family.
Copy !req
662. But Harley's time in the WWF
is cut short by an injury.
Copy !req
663. Ironically, while in the ring
with Champion Hulk Hogan.
Copy !req
664. Ooh, he's going out
of the ring alright!
Copy !req
665. The hard way!
Copy !req
666. Eight-foot-long table.
Copy !req
667. So they had that out there,
and Hogan got on the table.
Copy !req
668. A chop to the throat!
Copy !req
669. The Hulkster down
on the table.
Copy !req
670. He's setting the table up
for something.
Copy !req
671. And Dad leaped off the
ring to land on Hogan
Copy !req
672. on the table,
and Hogan moved...
Copy !req
673. and he went
through the table.
Copy !req
674. King coming down!
Oh!
Copy !req
675. That steel table
bent in two!
Copy !req
676. And the metal bar that
goes underneath it,
Copy !req
677. like supports the table,
Copy !req
678. had been bent down,
not broken.
Copy !req
679. The metal bar came up and
Copy !req
680. hit him in his lower
abdomen just below
Copy !req
681. the belly button and blew
out his lower intestines.
Copy !req
682. Created a big hole,
a rupture.
Copy !req
683. He was at my apartment,
Copy !req
684. and I left,
and I came back,
Copy !req
685. and he was passed out on the
floor in a fetal position.
Copy !req
686. I thought he was dead.
Copy !req
687. King coming down!
Oh!
Copy !req
688. After suffering an internal
injury during a move gone
Copy !req
689. wrong, the future of Harley
Race's career is in doubt
Copy !req
690. when he's found on the floor
of his son's apartment.
Copy !req
691. Harley had an
abdominal hernia.
Copy !req
692. It required multiple
surgeries to fix the damage,
Copy !req
693. and it significantly
hampered the rest of
Copy !req
694. his wrestling career.
Copy !req
695. And that was a
long recovery.
Copy !req
696. And he's a 300 pound guy,
he went down to
Copy !req
697. 200 pounds,
needed care, constantly,
Copy !req
698. needed a lot of my
help, constantly.
Copy !req
699. He had ended up having
two colostomy bags
Copy !req
700. on the front
of his stomach,
Copy !req
701. some 300 to 400 stitches
on the inside of him.
Copy !req
702. Weighing in at
260 pounds...
Copy !req
703. Harley Race!
Copy !req
704. He eventually got back
to his wrestling weight.
Copy !req
705. He was a bit old
to be doing-
Copy !req
706. to have to recover from
something like that.
Copy !req
707. Now to recover
and go back to
Copy !req
708. his job as an insurance
salesman? Sure.
Copy !req
709. But to go back to wrestling,
that was pretty tough.
Copy !req
710. Harley wrestles sporadically
over the next few years
Copy !req
711. as his career winds down,
and he spends more time
Copy !req
712. pursuing his
other interests.
Copy !req
713. But once again,
tragedy strikes.
Copy !req
714. We had a lake home,
we went boating...
Copy !req
715. we had good times
at the lake.
Copy !req
716. Some of the best,
Copy !req
717. until that boat accident.
Copy !req
718. It was in the morning,
Copy !req
719. and he got up and
started drinking scotch.
Copy !req
720. So I went out on the dock,
and I sat there,
Copy !req
721. and I kept coming in and,
he'd just call me names,
Copy !req
722. so I'd go out again.
Copy !req
723. And that night he
stormed out the house,
Copy !req
724. and he zoomed out
of there, out of the cove.
Copy !req
725. The story that we were told
was that he was drinking.
Copy !req
726. There was a boat in the
middle of the lake that
Copy !req
727. turned off all their lights.
Copy !req
728. As he was coming
around the cove,
Copy !req
729. by the time he'd seen 'em,
it was too late.
Copy !req
730. And he ran into 'em.
Copy !req
731. He was in the water,
Copy !req
732. the other people was
in the water.
Copy !req
733. He pulled them
over to shore.
Copy !req
734. It was a pretty
traumatic event.
Copy !req
735. As a result of this accident,
several other people in the
Copy !req
736. other boat were injured
and Harley was as well.
Copy !req
737. Harley was intoxicated and
also had resisted arrest
Copy !req
738. at the time the police
came to investigate.
Copy !req
739. And after he left, I called
Harley's psychiatrist and
Copy !req
740. she said, "Back the car up,
put your clothes in the car,
Copy !req
741. get out of there." I called
my attorney and I said,
Copy !req
742. "I want to file for
divorce tomorrow,
Copy !req
743. and have a restraining
order in place."
Copy !req
744. Very nasty.
Copy !req
745. Wrestling.
Copy !req
746. I mean, the arduous
relationship of
Copy !req
747. having someone
gone all the time.
Copy !req
748. Mom raising me
pretty much...
Copy !req
749. and then once his career
starts to wind down,
Copy !req
750. and they're together
a lot more,
Copy !req
751. they didn't get along.
Copy !req
752. He was a
kind-hearted person.
Copy !req
753. He just wasn't
a family man.
Copy !req
754. At one time, I was putting
Christmas decorations up,
Copy !req
755. I got a phone call and said,
Copy !req
756. "Your husband has
got me knocked up."
Copy !req
757. I got a letter one time
to answer to a woman
Copy !req
758. from Wichita, Kansas,
said that they want
Copy !req
759. alimony for a
16-year-old girl.
Copy !req
760. That was real.
Copy !req
761. But he got out of that too.
Copy !req
762. 'Cause he's Harley Race.
Copy !req
763. But I could never leave him
because he told me
Copy !req
764. he'd get rid of me
if I left him.
Copy !req
765. Well, what do you
think he meant?
Copy !req
766. It was terrible.
I was stuck.
Copy !req
767. I was afraid.
Copy !req
768. And even though he was
Copy !req
769. rough with me at times,
Copy !req
770. I should have done
what they do today,
Copy !req
771. they take you in.
But I didn't.
Copy !req
772. I would find out more
sometimes about my
Copy !req
773. parents' divorce through
reading the newspaper.
Copy !req
774. In fact, remember the movie
with Michael Douglas and
Copy !req
775. Kathleen Turner called
'War of the Roses'?
Copy !req
776. Here in Kansas City, and
they wrote articles
Copy !req
777. about my parents' divorce,
Copy !req
778. it was called
'War of the Races.'
Copy !req
779. My dad did his best,
Copy !req
780. and he did a great
job as a father.
Copy !req
781. But, you know, different
stories that are told
Copy !req
782. that are true, not true,
who knows.
Copy !req
783. It was just too much.
Copy !req
784. But there were a
lot of arguments.
Copy !req
785. When Harley and
I would fight,
Copy !req
786. I would take Justin in his
little red wagon and
Copy !req
787. take him out of there so
he wouldn't see it.
Copy !req
788. And there were so
many of those times.
Copy !req
789. I, I just hope that
Copy !req
790. my son can understand
my side of the story.
Copy !req
791. It's true, it's not a lie.
Copy !req
792. And I don't know
that he will.
Copy !req
793. I wish it wouldn't have
happened the way it did.
Copy !req
794. I'm glad I got out
of the marriage.
Copy !req
795. Divorced from his wife,
Harley faces another
Copy !req
796. challenge when a lawsuit
from his boating accident
Copy !req
797. threatens to wipe out
everything he has left.
Copy !req
798. The woman that was injured
had two broken legs,
Copy !req
799. but a couple of years later,
when it went to court,
Copy !req
800. she was still
in a wheelchair.
Copy !req
801. And as a result,
she was asking for
Copy !req
802. $10 million in damages.
Copy !req
803. She ended up being
awarded $250,000
Copy !req
804. because Harley
was intoxicated.
Copy !req
805. This was a time where not
only had his wrestling
Copy !req
806. slowed down,
but also
Copy !req
807. $250,000 as a judgment,
Copy !req
808. it was a financial burden on
Harley that he would
Copy !req
809. possibly not ever
really recover from.
Copy !req
810. Everything he'd earned
traveling the world
Copy !req
811. for 20 years is
basically gone. Right?
Copy !req
812. Man... man.
Copy !req
813. Facing financial hardship
for the first time in his
Copy !req
814. long career, Harley returns
to the wrestling world.
Copy !req
815. After the abdominal surgery
from the accident with
Copy !req
816. the table in the
Hulk Hogan match,
Copy !req
817. then Harley had torn
his shoulder out.
Copy !req
818. He knew his wrestling
days were behind him,
Copy !req
819. but Harley Race was
still a major name
Copy !req
820. in professional wrestling,
and WCW had
Copy !req
821. incredible respect
for Harley.
Copy !req
822. And they said if he can't
wrestle on a regular basis
Copy !req
823. anymore, he's still
a personality,
Copy !req
824. and he still has
that knowledge,
Copy !req
825. we can use him
as a manager.
Copy !req
826. Former heavyweight
champion,
Copy !req
827. Harley Race and Vader!
Copy !req
828. For a guy like Vader,
especially,
Copy !req
829. Harley Race was a
brilliant teacher,
Copy !req
830. because Vader was a
ex-pro football player,
Copy !req
831. he was used to coaches.
Copy !req
832. And Harley was a no-nonsense
guy that would not take
Copy !req
833. any shit, and he'd tell him
what he was doing wrong.
Copy !req
834. What are you
in my face?
Copy !req
835. I was a little
trepidatious, right?
Copy !req
836. Because I didn't know if
I was, like, a Harley guy.
Copy !req
837. I didn't drive fast,
I didn't drink much...
Copy !req
838. but he really
embraced me.
Copy !req
839. Again, Harley Race now
grabbing Cactus and
Copy !req
840. shoving him
back in there.
Copy !req
841. Harley had
respect for Mick,
Copy !req
842. but he thought
Mick was crazy.
Copy !req
843. Ah!
Oh my goodness!
Copy !req
844. The bumps that Mick
would take, it's,
Copy !req
845. "Jesus Christ,
he's gonna kill himself."
Copy !req
846. I know when I did
my feud with Vader,
Copy !req
847. the Harley stuff
was just priceless.
Copy !req
848. To have him there and
have him be part of it,
Copy !req
849. some of my
greatest moments.
Copy !req
850. Harley leaves WCW,
Copy !req
851. but his next
public appearance
Copy !req
852. shocks even his
closest friends.
Copy !req
853. 1998, an exposé,
'Wrestling secrets revealed
Copy !req
854. that it was a work, that it
was predetermined,
Copy !req
855. that everybody was in
on it together.'
Copy !req
856. And that's the antithesis of
what Harley Race would
Copy !req
857. have done publicly in his
entire wrestling career.
Copy !req
858. - As a booker...
Copy !req
859. Your main job is putting
two people together
Copy !req
860. that'll draw money.
Copy !req
861. The production was able
to gravel out his voice,
Copy !req
862. but not so much to the point
where you couldn't tell
Copy !req
863. who it was, and obviously
the silhouette.
Copy !req
864. If you knew who Harley was,
you knew exactly who it was.
Copy !req
865. But it was surprising
to see Harley on there.
Copy !req
866. A guy who respected and
protected the business on
Copy !req
867. a show called 'Secrets
of Pro Wrestling.'
Copy !req
868. I was so disappointed.
And I even told Harley,
Copy !req
869. "Harley, why'd you do it"?
And he said,
Copy !req
870. "Money, brother."
Just like anything else,
Copy !req
871. money is the evil
to everything.
Copy !req
872. In a previous era,
Copy !req
873. the consequences for that
would have been dire,
Copy !req
874. but the guy that would've
been dealing out
Copy !req
875. the consequences would
have been Harley Race.
Copy !req
876. Who are you gonna get
to beat up Harley Race?
Copy !req
877. Retired from the ring,
Copy !req
878. Harley starts his own
wrestling school
Copy !req
879. where he imparts his
knowledge to a
Copy !req
880. new generation of talent.
Copy !req
881. And in 2004, his long
history in the business,
Copy !req
882. is honored with an induction
into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Copy !req
883. God gave me the talent
to work in this wrestling
Copy !req
884. business, and there's not
a better spot on Earth,
Copy !req
885. than under those
bright lights.
Copy !req
886. In 2019, after years of
battling various ailments
Copy !req
887. including lung cancer, the
wrestling world awakes to
Copy !req
888. the news that
Harley Race has died.
Copy !req
889. Harley was in terrible pain,
Copy !req
890. but he sure had
kept it inside.
Copy !req
891. The depression
was kept inside,
Copy !req
892. the tears were
kept inside.
Copy !req
893. The human body,
no matter how much of
Copy !req
894. a superhuman he might be,
has its limits.
Copy !req
895. He was 76 when
he passed away.
Copy !req
896. When I came into the
hospital room,
Copy !req
897. and I whispered,
"Dad, it's me."
Copy !req
898. I had a hold of his hand
and he, like,
Copy !req
899. squeezed my hand and I
put my head down,
Copy !req
900. and I was crying,
Copy !req
901. and I put my head
down on this chest,
Copy !req
902. and he reached over, and
he patted me on the back,
Copy !req
903. and left his hand
laying there and
Copy !req
904. it was just as
warm as ever.
Copy !req
905. I'm Harley Race,
seven times
Copy !req
906. World's
Heavyweight Champion.
Copy !req
907. I would like to introduce to
you the star of this film,
Copy !req
908. and also the star
of my life,
Copy !req
909. my wife, Evonne.
Copy !req
910. Deep in my heart, I have
to say, he was a good guy.
Copy !req
911. Harley was a god
in wrestling.
Copy !req
912. He just wasn't meant
to be a husband.
Copy !req
913. One of the greatest men that
ever stepped in the ring.
Copy !req
914. It takes a certain
talent to get over.
Copy !req
915. Harley had that
talent to get over.
Copy !req
916. You could not be not
in awe of Harley.
Copy !req
917. After all these years,
we're still referring to the
Copy !req
918. Harley Race way of doing
things as being the best.
Copy !req
919. He was a real,
legitimate tough guy.
Copy !req
920. Some people are
just born that way,
Copy !req
921. he was one of 'em,
Copy !req
922. and he was very
good at what he did.
Copy !req
923. I don't see how anybody
could possibly be
Copy !req
924. tougher than
Harley Race was.
Copy !req
925. Maybe there's
somebody as tough.
Copy !req
926. Mental toughness,
physical toughness,
Copy !req
927. Harley Race had it.
Copy !req
928. I don't know if his
toughness was to
Copy !req
929. cover up emotions.
Copy !req
930. When he had the
wrestling school,
Copy !req
931. and he was married to
his wife, BJ,
Copy !req
932. and when BJ passed away,
Copy !req
933. we were talking,
and he said,
Copy !req
934. "I haven't cried."
Copy !req
935. And he goes, "I should be
crying, Trevor."
Copy !req
936. I don't know why I haven't
cried." And he goes,
Copy !req
937. "I miss her, I love her
and I'm hurting...
Copy !req
938. but I haven't cried."
And I told him, I said,
Copy !req
939. "I just don't
think that's you.
Copy !req
940. It's not who you are.
It's not...
Copy !req
941. it's not in your DNA,
brother."
Copy !req
942. There's probably nobody
Copy !req
943. in the history of
wrestling that
Copy !req
944. gave more of themselves,
physically,
Copy !req
945. and their effort, and
their determination,
Copy !req
946. and their credibility
than Harley race did.
Copy !req
