1. Look at this man!
I'm telling you, ladies,
Copy !req
2. send your kids
out of the room,
Copy !req
3. because I want you to take
a look at Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
4. There's no one who doesn't
know Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
5. And, if they don't
know his name,
Copy !req
6. if they see the face and
the head, they know it.
Copy !req
7. His entire head was a flame.
Copy !req
8. So, he started doing the
flames on his suits and
Copy !req
9. his boots, and you'd look
out into the audience
Copy !req
10. and the flame everywhere.
Copy !req
11. Bam! Oh! Wow!
Copy !req
12. He was just massive,
but so athletic.
Copy !req
13. So quick.
Copy !req
14. Bammer, he did it almost
like a ballet dancer.
Copy !req
15. Bigelow can move
for a big man.
Copy !req
16. He knows what
he's doing in there.
Copy !req
17. Look at this 400-pound man
doing flips, cartwheels...
Copy !req
18. going through the ring,
this is crazy.
Copy !req
19. In his time in the 80s,
nobody was like him.
Copy !req
20. Like, this isn't right.
Copy !req
21. It wasn't just
"Rookie of the Year",
Copy !req
22. it was "Phenomenon
of the Year."
Copy !req
23. Bam Bam Bigelow!
Copy !req
24. Arriving on the scene
like a force of nature,
Copy !req
25. Bam Bam Bigelow catapulted
to the top of the
Copy !req
26. wrestling world and
never looked back.
Copy !req
27. You need a little excitement?
Copy !req
28. When you've been on top in
WWE and then you've
Copy !req
29. been on the tippety top top
in ECW, you know,
Copy !req
30. they beat the —-
out of each other.
Copy !req
31. Wrestling rewarded Bam Bam's
talents with money and fame,
Copy !req
32. but those rewards came
with a heavy price.
Copy !req
33. All the wear and tear,
Copy !req
34. you're not gonna
feel it right away.
Copy !req
35. But it's coming.
Copy !req
36. And that's when
it changed.
Copy !req
37. And everything spiralled
out of control.
Copy !req
38. You're selling your body,
you're selling your health,
Copy !req
39. to have fame, fortune and
everything that goes with it.
Copy !req
40. People had mouths to feed,
so guys did
Copy !req
41. what they had to do
to earn their living.
Copy !req
42. He was in pain, and there
was a doctor involved that
Copy !req
43. was willing to
take that away,
Copy !req
44. and things went
downhill from there.
Copy !req
45. But Bam Bam's addictions
eventually push him
Copy !req
46. beyond the point
of redemption,
Copy !req
47. destroying
everything he loved.
Copy !req
48. A trusted professional
gave him the thing
Copy !req
49. that was his
biggest demise.
Copy !req
50. This doctor,
he could have handed
Copy !req
51. a loaded machine
gun to our family.
Copy !req
52. It would have
been no different.
Copy !req
53. No different.
Copy !req
54. So, I'm just digging
through the vast archives,
Copy !req
55. we have Dad's calendar,
Copy !req
56. and then if you go to
November 15, 1987,
Copy !req
57. he got married,
and then, you know,
Copy !req
58. not even taking
a honeymoon.
Copy !req
59. Like,
he had a day off,
Copy !req
60. and then he was in
Des Moines, Iowa.
Copy !req
61. This is literally the first
four days of his career
Copy !req
62. with the WWF in 1987.
Copy !req
63. He definitely wanted
kids right away.
Copy !req
64. He was like, "I just want to
stay home and raise the kids.
Copy !req
65. You could go to work,
go to school,
Copy !req
66. do what you want to do."
Copy !req
67. And he was more
excited about being a dad
Copy !req
68. than he was when he
got Wrestlemania.
Copy !req
69. Hi, I'm Dana Breckenridge.
Copy !req
70. I was married to
Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
71. And when Ricci came,
I mean,
Copy !req
72. that was the
best thing ever.
Copy !req
73. 'Cause alls he ever really
wanted was a daughter.
Copy !req
74. Oh yeah, he was a
giant teddy bear.
Copy !req
75. What fans saw in the ring
was not at all
Copy !req
76. what we saw at home.
Copy !req
77. It was love,
it was playing around.
Copy !req
78. My name is Ricci Bigelow,
Copy !req
79. and my father is
Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
80. We had this giant,
giant bed that
Copy !req
81. we would all cuddle up in.
Just jump around.
Copy !req
82. Yeah, it was a great time.
Copy !req
83. It was the last time
I saw him.
Copy !req
84. We were just
driving in the car,
Copy !req
85. and I was
2 or 3 years old,
Copy !req
86. but I remember seeing his
head slowly drop to his chest
Copy !req
87. and then come back up.
Copy !req
88. And whenever I think back
on how I went about
Copy !req
89. the situation I'm
always so baffled,
Copy !req
90. because I was so young, but
in some way I understood that
Copy !req
91. we were in some
sort of danger.
Copy !req
92. And as a toddler,
I went into panic mode.
Copy !req
93. "I gotta go to the bathroom!
I gotta get out.
Copy !req
94. Daddy, Daddy,
pull over, I can't!"
Copy !req
95. So we pulled over on the
side of the road,
Copy !req
96. and he looked at me
and gave me
Copy !req
97. this big toothless smile.
Copy !req
98. He's like, "Come on,
do you have to go?"
Copy !req
99. Like it was just on the
side of the road.
Copy !req
100. And I was like, "No, no."
But kind of stalling,
Copy !req
101. and then we just got
back on the road,
Copy !req
102. and it started
happening again.
Copy !req
103. This time we
were by a diner,
Copy !req
104. and we pulled
into that diner,
Copy !req
105. and the next thing I know
my car door was opened,
Copy !req
106. and a man just
scooped me up and
Copy !req
107. put me in the back of
this grey car.
Copy !req
108. And, from the backseat
I watched them
Copy !req
109. take my dad in
handcuffs, across.
Copy !req
110. That was it.
Copy !req
111. My mom came and
picked me up,
Copy !req
112. and she was real
gentle about it,
Copy !req
113. and she told me,
"You're probably not going
Copy !req
114. to be seeing Daddy anymore.
He needs help."
Copy !req
115. And that was the
last time I saw him.
Copy !req
116. He wanted to be a wrestler,
Copy !req
117. but he wanted to be
a father more.
Copy !req
118. And, um, everything
was taken away.
Copy !req
119. So, was wrestling
what took it away?
Copy !req
120. Or was Scott and all the
other outside influences
Copy !req
121. what took it away?
Like, how did this happen?
Copy !req
122. Oh here we go.
Copy !req
123. This is Dad sophomore year,
in high school.
Copy !req
124. Oh my God.
Copy !req
125. Right? They were Class A
North champions.
Copy !req
126. 20 and 6.
Copy !req
127. That's probably the last time
you'll see him with hair.
Copy !req
128. Everything around Asbury
Park is Bruce Springsteen.
Copy !req
129. The sound of Bruce Springsteen
is everywhere and
Copy !req
130. in everything that we did
when we grew up on The Shore.
Copy !req
131. Scott was a street kid from
Neptune who hung out in
Copy !req
132. the bars of Asbury,
you know,
Copy !req
133. driving the circuit
in muscle cars.
Copy !req
134. For our age and our crowd
he was definitely the man.
Copy !req
135. You know what, he was
probably the kindest,
Copy !req
136. most genuine person
of the group.
Copy !req
137. We were friends and it
was just a progression,
Copy !req
138. and then it was a whirlwind,
we were street kids.
Copy !req
139. Nobody thought about
where they were going.
Copy !req
140. I didn't go to college,
my friends didn't
Copy !req
141. go to college,
he didn't go to college.
Copy !req
142. God, the Jersey Shore was
like, the party place to be.
Copy !req
143. I was running a club
called Club Xanadu
Copy !req
144. in Asbury Park,
New Jersey.
Copy !req
145. The club is actually one
block from The Stone Pony,
Copy !req
146. and in the middle was this
place called Quack Quack.
Copy !req
147. It's DDP,
Diamond Dallas Page,
Copy !req
148. and I know Bam Bam because
I'm from the Jersey Shore.
Copy !req
149. - DDP!
- Oh!
Copy !req
150. We've got a new
world champion, guys.
Copy !req
151. I roll into the
Quack Quack and
Copy !req
152. I see this mammoth kid.
Copy !req
153. At some point, you know,
we're doing shots and
Copy !req
154. we just kind of clicked,
you know,
Copy !req
155. but I think he was
17 at the time,
Copy !req
156. but no one cared,
Copy !req
157. 'cause he looked like
a full grown man.
Copy !req
158. He was, you know,
300 plus pounds,
Copy !req
159. and he could obviously
be very menacing,
Copy !req
160. but he also had that
fun side to him.
Copy !req
161. And they were calling him
Copy !req
162. "The Beast from
the East" back then.
Copy !req
163. He was a football player and
he was ranked in the state
Copy !req
164. for wrestling, and he was
feared on the mat and
Copy !req
165. on the football field.
Copy !req
166. This is the time when
heavyweight in
Copy !req
167. high school wrestling
was unlimited.
Copy !req
168. So, you're talking about a
320 pound teenager
Copy !req
169. who can bench 500 pounds,
walking onto a mat.
Copy !req
170. I'm Shane Bigelow.
Copy !req
171. My father is
Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
172. I heard a story from a high
school wrestling coach that
Copy !req
173. my father rolled his ankle
real bad and he couldn't
Copy !req
174. wrestle, but his coach
was just like, "Scotty,
Copy !req
175. I need you to just go up
there and just look mean."
Copy !req
176. So he gets up, he steps
up on the scale,
Copy !req
177. and he turns to the kid and
he just gives him this
Copy !req
178. big flex, just like,
"I'm coming for you!"
Copy !req
179. Lo and behold this kid is
shitting his pants.
Copy !req
180. So, he tells his coach,
"I'm not wrestling this guy,
Copy !req
181. he's going to rip my
—-ing head off."
Copy !req
182. All my father had to do,
he hopped out on one leg,
Copy !req
183. got his hand raised,
and took the win.
Copy !req
184. Yeah, there was a group
of the boys and
Copy !req
185. they were rough drinking,
tattooed, like old sailors,
Copy !req
186. but not sailors,
they were roofers.
Copy !req
187. And they were very
infamous around town.
Copy !req
188. Him and his brothers used to
jump off of billboards
Copy !req
189. onto mattresses on the
side of the road.
Copy !req
190. My grandmother would drive
past, she would be like,
Copy !req
191. "Oh look at those kids."
And then she'd realize that
Copy !req
192. it was her three boys
jumping onto, like,
Copy !req
193. five mattresses piled high.
Copy !req
194. Scott was very quiet.
Copy !req
195. You know, he was the
baby of the bunch.
Copy !req
196. They usually only
called him in
Copy !req
197. when they needed the
extra muscle.
Copy !req
198. I had heard he got into a
fight and he bit
Copy !req
199. some kid's ear off, it's
like, what?
Copy !req
200. But it's part of
the legend that went with
Copy !req
201. "The Beast from the East."
Copy !req
202. Tough dude.
He ran with rugged people.
Copy !req
203. He was all that and a bag
of chips, man, he was a,
Copy !req
204. he was a bad apple
when he wanted to be.
Copy !req
205. I am Taz.
Copy !req
206. Former ECW World
Heavyweight Champion,
Copy !req
207. and former opponent
of Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
208. Bam Bam Bigelow
all over Taz.
Copy !req
209. I've heard all the
stories about Bigelow,
Copy !req
210. and I believe them all.
Copy !req
211. There's a whole separate
legend before The Legend
Copy !req
212. Bam Bam Bigelow ever
became The Legend.
Copy !req
213. My name is
Scott Colton Bigelow,
Copy !req
214. and Bam Bam Bigelow
is my father.
Copy !req
215. I know that he was a bounty
hunter for a short stint.
Copy !req
216. I don't know much about
the backstory of it.
Copy !req
217. He was supposedly
commissioned to go and
Copy !req
218. bring back a young girl
Copy !req
219. who was taken out
of the country.
Copy !req
220. In the whole mayday
craziness of the thing,
Copy !req
221. his bounty hunting partner
ends up
Copy !req
222. getting shot in the
neck and killed.
Copy !req
223. And that's when my dad spent
Copy !req
224. six months in a
Mexican prison.
Copy !req
225. I heard he ended up in jail.
Copy !req
226. You know, in Mexico.
Copy !req
227. So you'd just hear
little bits and pieces,
Copy !req
228. and with Scotty,
they could be exaggerated.
Copy !req
229. The story is he befriended
the judge because he used to
Copy !req
230. run through the walls that
were made out of, like,
Copy !req
231. the terracotta clay.
Copy !req
232. He used to just break through
the cells of the walls
Copy !req
233. so they couldn't
keep him in.
Copy !req
234. So the judge one day
apparently goes to him
Copy !req
235. and asks him, he goes,
Copy !req
236. "I need security from
all these cartel, mob,
Copy !req
237. whatever guys.
Copy !req
238. So you stand in front of me
and you stop these maniacs
Copy !req
239. from like, lunging at me,
and trying to kill me,
Copy !req
240. and I'll knock your
sentence down."
Copy !req
241. So the story is that a judge
took pity on my father
Copy !req
242. because my father
saved him from a
Copy !req
243. bunch of guys trying
to jump over and stab him,
Copy !req
244. and he ended up letting
him loose early.
Copy !req
245. He's basically a
New Jersey legend.
Copy !req
246. There's a story that, uh,
one night a house is on fire,
Copy !req
247. he's driving by, runs in
and saves some kids.
Copy !req
248. He pulled over, ran in the
house and saved the kids.
Copy !req
249. That sounds like a TV movie.
Copy !req
250. It doesn't sound like stuff
that really happens, you know?
Copy !req
251. And, uh, there were a
lot of stories like that,
Copy !req
252. just out there
floating around.
Copy !req
253. I'm Shane Douglas and I
had the pleasure of being
Copy !req
254. partners in The Triple Threat
with Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
255. Who's the
world champion?
Copy !req
256. You know, as I had heard
that he got arrested,
Copy !req
257. I guess in Mexico.
Copy !req
258. You know, that
sounds implausible.
Copy !req
259. But then, like, over years
you'd hear other people
Copy !req
260. repeating these
stories and I'm just,
Copy !req
261. elevating that legend
that was Bam Bam.
Copy !req
262. Here comes Bam Bam
in the club,
Copy !req
263. and this is like '81-ish,
and it's packed.
Copy !req
264. My club was nice.
Copy !req
265. And I see Bam roll in with
like three of his
Copy !req
266. biker buddies, and I come
rolling up behind him,
Copy !req
267. put my arm around his back,
I'm like, "Yo, Bammer.
Copy !req
268. No trouble in here tonight,
right bro?"
Copy !req
269. "Aw come on Page,
I wouldn't do that to you."
Copy !req
270. And at some point
we're at the bar and
Copy !req
271. I bought, you know,
got the guys a shot,
Copy !req
272. and uh,
wrestling comes up.
Copy !req
273. And, you know, I said,
"You know, I tried that,
Copy !req
274. in '79." He goes,
"You tried wrestling?"
Copy !req
275. And I said, "But I had
three matches.
Copy !req
276. My third match I hurt
my knee, and I kind of
Copy !req
277. got swept away by the booze,
the broads, and the party."
Copy !req
278. But talking to him about it,
you know, I'm like,
Copy !req
279. "Dude, you're a natural."
He goes, "I've, I,
Copy !req
280. that would, that would be a,
that would be a
Copy !req
281. pie in the sky
dream for me."
Copy !req
282. So, Larry Sharpe was a
former amateur wrestler...
Copy !req
283. Who opened up the
Monster Factory.
Copy !req
284. My name is Dave Meltzer.
Copy !req
285. I'm the editor of The
Wrestling Observer Newsletter
Copy !req
286. and I've been covering
pro wrestling since 1971.
Copy !req
287. And, one day I guess Bam
Bam walked in the door,
Copy !req
288. and Larry saw, like
everyone did, money!
Copy !req
289. And he became
Scott's "manager".
Copy !req
290. Set him up on a couch,
threw him in the ring,
Copy !req
291. and trained him.
Copy !req
292. I saw footage of him coming
out of the Monster Factory.
Copy !req
293. You could tell, like,
his aptitude to learn
Copy !req
294. how to do this and get better
at this, his athleticism,
Copy !req
295. it jumped out to me
right away.
Copy !req
296. I mean, seeing a guy
like that, you know,
Copy !req
297. a guy that big, you know,
do a cartwheel, I was like,
Copy !req
298. "Wow." I mean,
he's super impressive.
Copy !req
299. For Scott,
professional wrestling,
Copy !req
300. it's like a double
edged sword.
Copy !req
301. It gave him life and
it took his life.
Copy !req
302. That's the ultimate
double edge, isn't it?
Copy !req
303. In 1985, Scott Bigelow was
on the brink of stardom,
Copy !req
304. having made a clean break
from a troubled past.
Copy !req
305. When he went to the
Monster Factory
Copy !req
306. with Larry Sharpe,
Copy !req
307. Larry really developed the
name Bam Bam.
Copy !req
308. With Scott, Bam Bam.
The strong babyface.
Copy !req
309. You're like, "Bam Bam,
from the Flintstones."
Copy !req
310. So, he became
Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
311. Probably the most
handsome wrestler
Copy !req
312. on the face of the earth.
Copy !req
313. The massive
head of Bam Bam,
Copy !req
314. and that big flame
bowl on that head.
Copy !req
315. That tattoo.
Copy !req
316. Who gets ink on their head
has gotta be crazy.
Copy !req
317. Nevertheless their whole head.
Copy !req
318. For those that
never got a tattoo,
Copy !req
319. they hurt as much as they
think, okay?
Copy !req
320. This guy got his
skull tattooed.
Copy !req
321. Just imagine how much pain,
Copy !req
322. and how many hours
that took to do.
Copy !req
323. This was the branding
of Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
324. See people love to hate,
and as long as
Copy !req
325. they wanna hate me,
I know I'm doing my job.
Copy !req
326. And it kind of just sent
that message to the fans and
Copy !req
327. to other wrestlers,
that's a bad dude right there.
Copy !req
328. And Bammer, do you have
anything to say about
Copy !req
329. all of this?
- I'm hungry.
Copy !req
330. Despite being a rookie
to the wrestling scene,
Copy !req
331. those with an eye for the
business see
Copy !req
332. Bam Bam's incredible
potential.
Copy !req
333. Especially soon-to-be
industry pioneer,
Copy !req
334. Paul Heyman.
Copy !req
335. Paul was doing wrestling
magazines at the time.
Copy !req
336. This was before he was
actually running around
Copy !req
337. the business as a manager.
Copy !req
338. And in his magazines he was
always promoting
Copy !req
339. Bam Bam Bigelow like this,
this phenomenon.
Copy !req
340. And the guy had never
even had a match.
Copy !req
341. Paul worked at Studio 54,
he was doing publicity
Copy !req
342. at the time, and he got this,
you know, gig.
Copy !req
343. Bam Bam Bigelow's
first match.
Copy !req
344. And I looked at it, and I
was just like, "Oh my God.
Copy !req
345. This guy is like 380 pounds,
Copy !req
346. and he's coming
off the top rope."
Copy !req
347. At that point, you know,
I'm going, like,
Copy !req
348. "This guy is
gonna be like, it."
Copy !req
349. In wrestling, like, he's gonna
be the biggest thing.
Copy !req
350. I was like 19 when
we started dating,
Copy !req
351. and I was with his brother
and a couple other friends,
Copy !req
352. and we went to his show,
and he got up there and
Copy !req
353. he wrestled, and they were just
in awe of what it all was.
Copy !req
354. I just was like, "Oh
you know, he's at work."
Copy !req
355. I didn't really know
too much about it
Copy !req
356. until the WWF came back.
Copy !req
357. At some point I'm running
another really big club
Copy !req
358. in '86-ish, and I'm
flicking the channels,
Copy !req
359. and all of a sudden
I see him wrestling.
Copy !req
360. I'm like, "Oh my God!
That's Bigelow!"
Copy !req
361. Take a good look,
because we're bringing him
Copy !req
362. from one end of the
world to the other.
Copy !req
363. Next thing I know,
he's with Hulk Hogan,
Copy !req
364. he's in the WWF, and I'm like,
"Oh my God."
Copy !req
365. From Asbury Park,
New Jersey!
Copy !req
366. He made it.
Copy !req
367. - Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
368. Not only is Bam Bam
headed to the WWF,
Copy !req
369. but he's coming in with
the full support of
Copy !req
370. company owner,
Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
371. WWF brought him in,
and, you know,
Copy !req
372. they tried to make him
into the next big thing.
Copy !req
373. You know, they did the thing
where all the managers were
Copy !req
374. bidding on him to make
him extra special.
Copy !req
375. I'm here to introduce
Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
376. Vince loved big guys, and now
you've got the most agile
Copy !req
377. 380 pound guy that
anyone has ever seen.
Copy !req
378. I mean, they brought him in
to be Hulk Hogan's
Copy !req
379. tag team partner, to be
right there with Hogan,
Copy !req
380. and he was gonna
main event there,
Copy !req
381. and he was gonna work
with the top guys.
Copy !req
382. He signed the WWE contract
and we got married
Copy !req
383. November 15th, 1987.
Copy !req
384. And he went on the road
November 16th, 1987.
Copy !req
385. We were watching TV,
and he was like...
Copy !req
386. "Wanna get married?"
Copy !req
387. And I was like,
"Okay!"
Copy !req
388. And that was
basically it,
Copy !req
389. there was no fanfare.
Copy !req
390. I saw him ten times a year,
I don't even know.
Copy !req
391. Maybe that's why our
marriage lasted so long,
Copy !req
392. maybe that's why I don't
have anything bad to say.
Copy !req
393. He was on the road and
hit the ground running,
Copy !req
394. and it was on from there.
Copy !req
395. When he was home, you know,
he did regular things.
Copy !req
396. So he remained
very humble.
Copy !req
397. Scott was who he
was around here.
Copy !req
398. But you know, it was
cool to see him on TV.
Copy !req
399. He was in the first
Nintendo game.
Copy !req
400. Like I said, he was just
breaking into the business
Copy !req
401. and he worked,
and he provided.
Copy !req
402. He knew to take advantage of
that situation and to take
Copy !req
403. advantage of everything
that was given to him.
Copy !req
404. What a monster!
Copy !req
405. Everybody that gets a
pair of boots and tights
Copy !req
406. wants to be the world
champion, right?
Copy !req
407. And they think they're
ready for it yesterday.
Copy !req
408. For me it was 11 years
before I saw a world title.
Copy !req
409. So, when I did get that
belt I understood
Copy !req
410. the responsibility
that went with it.
Copy !req
411. So I would think that
Bam Bam being thrown
Copy !req
412. that quickly into main
events with, you know,
Copy !req
413. Hulk Hogan or one of
these massive names,
Copy !req
414. it would have
been intimidating.
Copy !req
415. He never had to
crawl his way up.
Copy !req
416. There's always going to be
jealousy especially when
Copy !req
417. you've been in the
business 15 years,
Copy !req
418. and he's been in the
business for two, or one,
Copy !req
419. and he's on the
top of the card.
Copy !req
420. He was young and these
guys were big and it was
Copy !req
421. George "The Animal" Steele,
and King Kong Bundy.
Copy !req
422. And it was just people that
he always saw on TV and now
Copy !req
423. all of a sudden he's standing
in the middle of the ring
Copy !req
424. in the Survivor Series, and
the older guys were like,
Copy !req
425. "You know what,
you need to step in line."
Copy !req
426. The eighth wonder
of the world.
Copy !req
427. I remember, there was
an André match,
Copy !req
428. of course André the Giant
was the biggest man
Copy !req
429. you'll ever see.
Copy !req
430. André got him in the ring
up against the ropes,
Copy !req
431. and wrapped the rope
around his neck.
Copy !req
432. Scott was like,
"He's gonna —-ing kill me.
Copy !req
433. Yeah, he's gonna kill me."
Copy !req
434. Look out!
Copy !req
435. Even Bam Bam looks
small next to this guy.
Copy !req
436. So, you know André,
he was on top of him and
Copy !req
437. he was pounding on him.
I mean, hard.
Copy !req
438. It was a bad night
at the office
Copy !req
439. for Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
440. And André said something
to him, like, "Young boy."
Copy !req
441. You know, "'You're a little
green for us."
Copy !req
442. Like, "This is how
it works."
Copy !req
443. Like, "You're gonna learn."
And André really just
Copy !req
444. stuck it to him, but,
you know, they were just
Copy !req
445. letting him know he had
to pay his dues.
Copy !req
446. He was green, and you
need to wait your turn,
Copy !req
447. 'cause it's not right now.
Copy !req
448. After only a year
in the big leagues,
Copy !req
449. Bam Bam Bigelow's match
with André the Giant
Copy !req
450. marks his exit
from the WWF.
Copy !req
451. He had gotten
such a big push,
Copy !req
452. but at a certain point
they did sour on him.
Copy !req
453. Bam Bam Bigelow
paid the price here.
Copy !req
454. And it may have been,
ego-wise,
Copy !req
455. the other guys
not liking him.
Copy !req
456. My father, just knowing when
things get a little too thick
Copy !req
457. and it's not his time,
he moved on.
Copy !req
458. Now on his own, Bam Bam
travels the country
Copy !req
459. working for various US
promotions before receiving
Copy !req
460. a lucrative offer to
wrestle in Japan.
Copy !req
461. I don't even know
what years these are,
Copy !req
462. but judging by the suit,
probably early '90s.
Copy !req
463. This is one of his
original Japanese suits.
Copy !req
464. There was more money for
him to be had overseas.
Copy !req
465. When he went to Japan
he was on for two weeks
Copy !req
466. and then home
for two weeks.
Copy !req
467. So he had longer
stretches of time home.
Copy !req
468. The contract.
Copy !req
469. And it was time for him to
come back to the States.
Copy !req
470. I guess in his meeting
with Vince, you know,
Copy !req
471. they worked a deal.
Copy !req
472. That he felt comfortable,
and he was a little bit
Copy !req
473. more mature, and he was
ready to come back.
Copy !req
474. So this is his, uh,
coming out to the ring attire
Copy !req
475. when he was in his
second run in the WWF.
Copy !req
476. He would have pyrotechnics
underneath here,
Copy !req
477. and they would shoot,
like, fireworks out.
Copy !req
478. Oh, wow!
Copy !req
479. I don't fill it out as much
as, as much as he did.
Copy !req
480. He said he used to look
like a tulip in it.
Copy !req
481. In 1992 as the WWF struggles
with declining popularity,
Copy !req
482. Vince McMahon brings
Bam Bam back to the roster.
Copy !req
483. Once again proving to
be a top level star,
Copy !req
484. Bam Bam gets thrust
into the main event
Copy !req
485. of WrestleMania XI...
Copy !req
486. Wrestlemania 11!
Copy !req
487. When McMahon books him
against of the NFL's
Copy !req
488. most celebrated players.
Copy !req
489. Lawrence Taylor.
Copy !req
490. Probably the most
Copy !req
491. media frenzied time of
my father's career.
Copy !req
492. That was Scott's idol,
like, LT and the Giants.
Copy !req
493. Like, "Now I'm gonna
wrestle him." You know?
Copy !req
494. "I'm gonna
wrestle with him."
Copy !req
495. That build up and that whole
pomp and circumstance of
Copy !req
496. being the main event
at Wrestlemania.
Copy !req
497. Lawrence Taylor,
it's just me and you!
Copy !req
498. This was a match not
for wrestling fans.
Copy !req
499. The media hype
around this match
Copy !req
500. has been absolutely huge.
Copy !req
501. This was a match for
the general public.
Copy !req
502. And the idea was by being in
the match all the exposure
Copy !req
503. from the football press,
and the mainstream press,
Copy !req
504. would then make
Bam Bam's name bigger,
Copy !req
505. so then he could be
the big star that
Copy !req
506. they wanted him to be.
Copy !req
507. That means I'm here,
I did it.
Copy !req
508. I am the 1%.
Copy !req
509. Every little boy wants
to be a WWE wrestler.
Copy !req
510. Almost every little boy.
And he was main event.
Copy !req
511. It was a paycheque
bigger than
Copy !req
512. a lot of people
make in one year.
Copy !req
513. I see a lot of videos online.
Copy !req
514. People all, "Oh, it's the
worst Wrestlemania."
Copy !req
515. You know what?
Copy !req
516. There's not another person
that could have carried
Copy !req
517. Lawrence Taylor
to do that show.
Copy !req
518. You know, Vince trusted
my father enough to be the
Copy !req
519. person to pull that off.
Copy !req
520. Bam Bam soon learns that
being the company's go-to
Copy !req
521. big man comes with
certain sacrifices.
Copy !req
522. It definitely took
a toll on his body.
Copy !req
523. I mean every time he sits
in a chair and stands up,
Copy !req
524. he just squatted 400 pounds.
Copy !req
525. A lot of wear and tear
on your knees.
Copy !req
526. Your back, your neck,
your shoulders.
Copy !req
527. I mean the thing that made
him so great was,
Copy !req
528. you know,
an agile big guy.
Copy !req
529. The problem with the agile
big guys is that by doing
Copy !req
530. that stuff, a smaller guy
can take that stuff longer,
Copy !req
531. and the big guy it starts
wearing down on you, a lot.
Copy !req
532. He definitely had some
knee surgeries and
Copy !req
533. an elbow surgery or
sholder surgery.
Copy !req
534. You know his body was
starting to take
Copy !req
535. a little bit of a lickin'.
Copy !req
536. That's one thing I didn't do.
Copy !req
537. I didn't worry and
I didn't stress out.
Copy !req
538. It was his job and he was
an entertainer and
Copy !req
539. he was an athlete, and I was
too young to think about
Copy !req
540. the lifelong lasting effects
of wrestling and
Copy !req
541. what it would have on
his body and his mind.
Copy !req
542. But I do know that he
knew if he was out
Copy !req
543. and he was injured too long,
somebody was going to
Copy !req
544. step up and replace him.
So, that was a no-no.
Copy !req
545. I'm not letting the
opportunity walk by me.
Copy !req
546. That heavyweight championship
is gonna be mine!
Copy !req
547. Probably pain pills
like everybody else.
Copy !req
548. But I do remember, you know,
that was so commonplace
Copy !req
549. among wrestlers then.
Copy !req
550. It was such a part
of the scene that
Copy !req
551. it wasn't like,
a big deal.
Copy !req
552. And it was like, "Hey D,
you got any Vikes?"
Copy !req
553. So you just gave em'
to your boy.
Copy !req
554. You know, because he
needed em' right there.
Copy !req
555. When you see this symbol
you can be assured of
Copy !req
556. drug free entertainment
you can be proud of.
Copy !req
557. Vince tested for marijuana
and performance
Copy !req
558. enhancing drugs, but you've
got a prescription,
Copy !req
559. you're good.
Copy !req
560. Through that 80s and
then into the 90s,
Copy !req
561. there were two things
that coincided.
Copy !req
562. Running, if this is
the wrestling industry,
Copy !req
563. running right next to that is
the pharmaceutical industry.
Copy !req
564. And the pharmaceutical
industry is now coming up
Copy !req
565. with better, more accessible
opiates, OxyContin,
Copy !req
566. which I did have
a problem with.
Copy !req
567. I've seen it, uh,
so much in my career,
Copy !req
568. so many of my peers during
that time just left us
Copy !req
569. way too early because
of addiction,
Copy !req
570. and especially pain pills.
Copy !req
571. He um, was diabetic and he
had an endocrinologist.
Copy !req
572. Not a pain management
doctor, and he would call,
Copy !req
573. and, "I need Percs,
I need Vikes, I need Oxys,
Copy !req
574. I need something
to keep me going."
Copy !req
575. If you were at the pool
party and ol' Doc came by,
Copy !req
576. it was well, "I happen to
have a refillable script of
Copy !req
577. OxyContins in return for
autographs." Or, you know,
Copy !req
578. tickets to local shows
here and there.
Copy !req
579. It's a pretty powerful thing
to have over someone.
Copy !req
580. They might as well have just
put heroine in a bottle and
Copy !req
581. called it OxyContin. I can
guarantee you before that
Copy !req
582. prescription was done,
he was probably addicted.
Copy !req
583. In 1995 after a three-year
run with the WWF,
Copy !req
584. Bam Bam Bigelow leaves the
company to sign with the
Copy !req
585. notorious hardcore
wrestling promotion ECW,
Copy !req
586. run by his old friend,
Paul Heyman.
Copy !req
587. I mean, one reason he went
to ECW was because
Copy !req
588. he liked how it was local.
Copy !req
589. Obviously, if he was in
Asbury the whole family
Copy !req
590. would get together,
we'd all go.
Copy !req
591. He knew he had
a commodity.
Copy !req
592. You know, he didn't
take his character off.
Copy !req
593. It was tattooed on his head,
so, wherever he went,
Copy !req
594. Bam Bam Bigelow was going.
Copy !req
595. There is only one
Bam Bam Bigelow!
Copy !req
596. I think it was a little
too hardcore for me,
Copy !req
597. being so young.
Copy !req
598. Our fans were riding with us.
Copy !req
599. That was the whole gimmick.
Copy !req
600. We were renegades,
well dammit,
Copy !req
601. we, the fans,
we're renegades too.
Copy !req
602. From fit to finish
those shows were chaos.
Copy !req
603. I remember this crowd
just like a mosh pit.
Copy !req
604. And this dude who
is drunk as a skunk,
Copy !req
605. comes barrelling and just
absolutely face punches me,
Copy !req
606. and chucks me
right into the ground.
Copy !req
607. You know, like
10, 11 years old.
Copy !req
608. Like I've never been
hit by a grown man,
Copy !req
609. and it's that type of, like,
where you're like-
Copy !req
610. You can't catch your breath.
Copy !req
611. So I remember
going backstage,
Copy !req
612. and I don't even think I
told my father anything,
Copy !req
613. he just like saw it.
And he's like,
Copy !req
614. "What happened?"
And I'm like,
Copy !req
615. "I don't know,
this guy punched me,"
Copy !req
616. like went through the crowd,
he's like, "Find him."
Copy !req
617. The gentleman who did that
was escorted to the back
Copy !req
618. for a conversation.
Copy !req
619. I witnessed this
quasi conversation,
Copy !req
620. I'll never forget it.
Copy !req
621. And all you hear is, "So,
you wanna hit kids?"
Copy !req
622. And you know that like,
Copy !req
623. this dude is getting the
life smacked out of him.
Copy !req
624. I don't know how else to
put it, it was very bad.
Copy !req
625. I'm sure
everybody's OK now.
Copy !req
626. But the fans in turn are
fuelled by ECW's over the top
Copy !req
627. ultra-violent brand
of extreme wrestling.
Copy !req
628. In ECW, we were a
bunch of wrestlers
Copy !req
629. that most of the
bigger promotions,
Copy !req
630. they didn't want us, kinda.
Copy !req
631. And we were like the
land of misfit toys.
Copy !req
632. And it incorporated a lot of
new stuff into pro wrestling
Copy !req
633. in a revolutionary way.
Copy !req
634. I mean, you had to be tough
to be in our company,
Copy !req
635. and Bigelow was a very
tough guy, a legitimate guy.
Copy !req
636. And he really started to
come into his own,
Copy !req
637. the months that
we were doing.
Copy !req
638. The stuff that these
guys were doing,
Copy !req
639. jumping off the rafters,
through tables,
Copy !req
640. getting thrown
into the stands-
Copy !req
641. It's just as hardcore
as hardcore can get.
Copy !req
642. Belly suplex!
Copy !req
643. We weren't just trying
to hurt each other,
Copy !req
644. we were professionals.
Copy !req
645. What happens in that
ring is built on trust.
Copy !req
646. So, the infamous
Taz and Bigelow
Copy !req
647. go through the ring
in Asbury Park.
Copy !req
648. So I get this phone call from
Paul Heyman, and um, he says,
Copy !req
649. "You and Bigelow, he's
gonna beat you for the belt,
Copy !req
650. and he's gonna put you
through the ring to do it."
Copy !req
651. He goes,
"What do you think?"
Copy !req
652. And the first thing I thought
is, "I'm gonna die."
Copy !req
653. So, the way a ring
is constructed,
Copy !req
654. it's a steel frame,
and then there's these
Copy !req
655. thick wood boards,
Copy !req
656. and then there's
kind of like a, uh, cushion.
Copy !req
657. It's not as big as a mat.
Copy !req
658. And then a canvas.
Copy !req
659. So these wood boards
were cut first.
Copy !req
660. So then the boards were just
moved out of the way,
Copy !req
661. then opened a trap door.
Copy !req
662. And Bam Bam
was concerned.
Copy !req
663. "What about Taz's head?"
Copy !req
664. Like, "His heads gonna hit
the frame of this thing.
Copy !req
665. How are we going to
clear this hole?"
Copy !req
666. I almost feel dirty
explaining this on here.
Copy !req
667. I'm so old school,
it's —-ing like, unbelievable.
Copy !req
668. So, basically, we fought,
fought, fought.
Copy !req
669. We were outside the ring
for quite some time fighting
Copy !req
670. until we get the signal
that this door is open.
Copy !req
671. It's got both champion and
challenger back in the ring.
Copy !req
672. So, if you watch closely...
Copy !req
673. He's got it!
He's got it locked up!
Copy !req
674. When I have the choke on him-
and I'm really pulling it
Copy !req
675. back this curtain all
the way here, right?
Copy !req
676. So, Bam Bam,
he's tapping first.
Copy !req
677. Then he puts his hand
on the top rope.
Copy !req
678. Under his hand is a little
piece of white tape.
Copy !req
679. That white tape was the
measurement to clear my head.
Copy !req
680. We hit that crash mat
hard as hell.
Copy !req
681. ECW! ECW!
Copy !req
682. The ring engulfs us.
And we heard the people.
Copy !req
683. My eyes lit up,
I was so happy.
Copy !req
684. And the first thing
he says to me,
Copy !req
685. "Are you okay?"
That's Bam Bam Bigelow.
Copy !req
686. And he goes,
"We —-in' did it!"
Copy !req
687. And we were laughing,
Copy !req
688. because the place
was rumbling.
Copy !req
689. He waited for the people
to come down a teeny bit,
Copy !req
690. and then once they
saw him come out first,
Copy !req
691. we knew the pop would be
loud but I don't know
Copy !req
692. if we knew it was
gonna be that loud.
Copy !req
693. I mean, I was just...
Copy !req
694. I'll never forget it
as long as I live.
Copy !req
695. And we've got a new...
Copy !req
696. I get goosebumps.
Copy !req
697. World Television
Champion!
Copy !req
698. There are so many things
that could have gone wrong.
Copy !req
699. You could break your back,
you could break your neck.
Copy !req
700. Uh, but Scotty never
ever said no to anything.
Copy !req
701. It's a small miracle
that Bigelow is moving.
Copy !req
702. You would see him come out,
he'd have, you know,
Copy !req
703. giant gashes on his head,
and he would just put some
Copy !req
704. superglue on it,
close it up,
Copy !req
705. and then we would go
have a cheesesteak.
Copy !req
706. I can't tell you how many
times he's been
Copy !req
707. sewed up in our living room.
Copy !req
708. Doctor just would come over
and just sew him up
Copy !req
709. in the middle of the night
while he was half asleep.
Copy !req
710. So the injuries were the
beginning of the end.
Copy !req
711. He had stenosis in the
entirety of his spine.
Copy !req
712. He had crushed discs.
Copy !req
713. He had sections fused of
his back at that time.
Copy !req
714. You could run your finger
down his spine and
Copy !req
715. you could feel,
almost like brail.
Copy !req
716. Pills just allowed him
to move.
Copy !req
717. If you didn't go out and
you didn't put on a show,
Copy !req
718. you weren't getting paid.
Copy !req
719. So, I understand the aspect
of having to take something
Copy !req
720. to basically push
you through that.
Copy !req
721. I did see Bigelow struggling
a little bit physically,
Copy !req
722. but he, he hid it well.
Copy !req
723. He wouldn't tell you, if you
had to go over a match,
Copy !req
724. "Hey dude, I'm hurting here,
my shoulder hurts,
Copy !req
725. my neck hurts,
my back hurts."
Copy !req
726. He was just, "Let's go."
You know, "Let's do it."
Copy !req
727. You know,
whatever it was.
Copy !req
728. The pain pills Bam Bam
Bigelow consumes allow him
Copy !req
729. to continue performing
at the highest level,
Copy !req
730. but they also take a toll on
his life away from the ring.
Copy !req
731. He was never, never,
never aggressive.
Copy !req
732. And he was always
very respectful.
Copy !req
733. And he became angry.
Copy !req
734. He would, at times,
be very coherent,
Copy !req
735. and at times be
very incoherent.
Copy !req
736. And he would be like,
"You are just crazy and
Copy !req
737. you're making things up.
Copy !req
738. I'm under a doctor's care,
and this is, you know,
Copy !req
739. what I have to do to be
in the business."
Copy !req
740. It was a doctor.
Copy !req
741. An MD, who get paid
a lot of money,
Copy !req
742. to treat him for
one disease,
Copy !req
743. and gave him another,
a whole other one.
Copy !req
744. The pill bottles
from that doctor,
Copy !req
745. I've never seen pill bottles
of that size
Copy !req
746. in my life before.
Copy !req
747. 100 pills?
300 pills?
Copy !req
748. His doctor was a fan,
Copy !req
749. and he would have done
anything that Scott wanted,
Copy !req
750. regardless of his license,
and he did.
Copy !req
751. Scott was in denial
and so was the doctor,
Copy !req
752. because I would
call him and say,
Copy !req
753. "Stop writing these
prescriptions.
Copy !req
754. You're destroying our lives.
You're ruining our family."
Copy !req
755. And that doctor's response,
Copy !req
756. he would call my
father and say that,
Copy !req
757. "The warden's calling me
telling me not to come over."
Copy !req
758. Undermining my mother
to my father
Copy !req
759. in an already
weakened state.
Copy !req
760. Nobody's paying attention
to these doctors.
Copy !req
761. You're a drug dealer.
Copy !req
762. 'Cause he was not
a pain doctor.
Copy !req
763. It's a tragedy.
Copy !req
764. Scott sold his soul
for OxyContins.
Copy !req
765. And he would have stepped
over us in the street
Copy !req
766. to get them.
Copy !req
767. Bam Bam Bigelow's addiction
continues to get worse,
Copy !req
768. fuelled by an endless supply
of OxyContin from his doctor.
Copy !req
769. OxyContin is one of
America's new wonder drugs.
Copy !req
770. Since the drug came on the
market the number of annual
Copy !req
771. prescriptions has risen
to nearly 6 million.
Copy !req
772. Contributing to the
problem are pill mills,
Copy !req
773. where doctors write
prescriptions for
Copy !req
774. non-medical reasons.
Copy !req
775. He wasn't going to buy
drugs off the street.
Copy !req
776. He was home
taking OxyContins.
Copy !req
777. And then I got pregnant with
Ricci, and then the promises,
Copy !req
778. you know, "This is
gonna be different.
Copy !req
779. We're gonna get
through this."
Copy !req
780. I think he tried to pull
himself together because
Copy !req
781. he said he always wanted a
daughter his whole life.
Copy !req
782. It was like beyond anything
to have this daughter,
Copy !req
783. and when she was little he
used to put her to bed
Copy !req
784. every single night, and he
would get a pillow and
Copy !req
785. he would lay on
the floor next to her,
Copy !req
786. and he would sing her songs,
and hold her hands.
Copy !req
787. And he was in her room
on her floor every night.
Copy !req
788. Wednesdays.
Copy !req
789. Every Wednesday my dad would
pick me up from preschool.
Copy !req
790. Big red truck.
Copy !req
791. Eat all the Doritos
you could imagine.
Copy !req
792. Paint pictures.
Copy !req
793. Just, normal father-
daughter relationship.
Copy !req
794. When he was around he was
focused on being with us and
Copy !req
795. spending time with us.
Copy !req
796. How you doing, boy?
Copy !req
797. His body was a
little hindered,
Copy !req
798. and he was starting
to feel the pain.
Copy !req
799. But, you know that didn't
stop us from going to
Copy !req
800. every opening day
for fishing.
Copy !req
801. Every opening day
for hunting.
Copy !req
802. He got to be a dad.
Copy !req
803. So with Dad being on the road
300 plus days a year.
Copy !req
804. Those are the
fondest memories.
Copy !req
805. There's no pension in
professional wrestling.
Copy !req
806. So, he needed to make as
Copy !req
807. much money as he
could with the
Copy !req
808. body that he had, 'cause he
knew it was deteriorating.
Copy !req
809. He even says that he's
the highest paid loser
Copy !req
810. in the world, because
he'll take a loss
Copy !req
811. as long as that loss pays.
Copy !req
812. I'm the guy who helped
bring Bam Bam in to WCW.
Copy !req
813. When he heard that
I was wrestling,
Copy !req
814. somehow he got my number,
he's like,
Copy !req
815. "Dude, you're doing it."
Copy !req
816. Like, we grew up maybe
7 miles from each other.
Copy !req
817. These two Jersey Shore boys.
Copy !req
818. But now we're
tag team champions.
Copy !req
819. I never felt like he was
under the influence
Copy !req
820. in the ring but, you know,
eventually, you know,
Copy !req
821. people start to go back to
their old habits and
Copy !req
822. that's why so
many guys died.
Copy !req
823. Over consumption of pills.
Copy !req
824. Because when you're
taking five at a time,
Copy !req
825. 'cause three
stopped working.
Copy !req
826. I'm not,
you can't remember
Copy !req
827. if you took them or not,
so you take five more.
Copy !req
828. You know, and before
you know it-
Copy !req
829. you're that guy.
Copy !req
830. He went on the road and
Copy !req
831. he would not show up to
shows or tapings.
Copy !req
832. He was in Arizona, and, um,
friends of ours were there,
Copy !req
833. and he didn't make it to the
show and they called home.
Copy !req
834. And I was like,
"What do you mean?
Copy !req
835. He's there." It got to
the point where
Copy !req
836. he was a liability, and
that's what they said.
Copy !req
837. And they paid him the rest
of his contract to stay home
Copy !req
838. because he could
not function.
Copy !req
839. I saw a man broken.
Copy !req
840. He's away from his family,
and he's not in the best
Copy !req
841. physical shape because
he's in constant pain.
Copy !req
842. You know, having to take a
pill just to get up.
Copy !req
843. And not just a pill,
multiple pills.
Copy !req
844. But the trade off
of that is
Copy !req
845. it completely
dulls your senses,
Copy !req
846. it completely just destroys
your sense of person.
Copy !req
847. 15, 20 OxyContins, easily.
Copy !req
848. Yeah.
Copy !req
849. It was dangerous.
Copy !req
850. And a situation happened
with the youngest
Copy !req
851. where it became
very dangerous.
Copy !req
852. I had wrote a paper about it
Copy !req
853. when I was in 8th grade.
Copy !req
854. And I went back and read it
last night understanding that
Copy !req
855. what was happening was,
I'm writing about
Copy !req
856. my father nodding out,
driving.
Copy !req
857. And when I wrote that
in 8th grade
Copy !req
858. I had no idea that's
what was going on.
Copy !req
859. And I remember the officers
were asking me
Copy !req
860. all these questions,
like, I mean,
Copy !req
861. for a three-year-old,
they're asking me
Copy !req
862. my address,
my phone number,
Copy !req
863. my mom's phone number,
like all this information,
Copy !req
864. and I'm just like, "I don't
know. Where's my dad?"
Copy !req
865. So when I went back
last night and read it,
Copy !req
866. really knowing
what was going on,
Copy !req
867. what was in his system,
it just hits ten times harder.
Copy !req
868. As Bam Bam Bigelow's
addiction sends him
Copy !req
869. crashing to rock bottom,
he's charged with
Copy !req
870. endangering the welfare
of his daughter.
Copy !req
871. He was given an
ultimatum. I'm like,
Copy !req
872. "You've either
gotta go get help,
Copy !req
873. or you have to go."
Copy !req
874. He wouldn't get help,
and he went.
Copy !req
875. He didn't see that he had a
problem the way that he did,
Copy !req
876. and the way
that addicts do.
Copy !req
877. And you know, Dad's not
gonna be home anymore,
Copy !req
878. they're getting a divorce.
Copy !req
879. That's when he picked up and
basically went to Florida.
Copy !req
880. He was married to a drug.
Copy !req
881. So to watch a man who
would choose that
Copy !req
882. over his children, when I
knew that that was
Copy !req
883. the most important thing,
Copy !req
884. was just the
worst thing ever.
Copy !req
885. And I got to talk to him on
the phone, but it would be,
Copy !req
886. like, spans of where it
would be really quiet,
Copy !req
887. because I could
hear him crying.
Copy !req
888. He was struggling to
form the words, "Hi."
Copy !req
889. I went down to Tampa,
spring break my senior year.
Copy !req
890. I wanted to go down there to
see my friends but I really
Copy !req
891. just wanted to go down
there to find my dad.
Copy !req
892. And um-
Copy !req
893. His girlfriend
answered the phone,
Copy !req
894. said he wasn't available at
that point in time,
Copy !req
895. and then I got a phone call
when I landed back in
Copy !req
896. New Jersey from my
father, apologizing.
Copy !req
897. And uh, you know I kind of
aired him out a little bit,
Copy !req
898. told him how I felt,
um...
Copy !req
899. and then he died.
Copy !req
900. Three weeks later.
Copy !req
901. I was in school,
teaching,
Copy !req
902. and a phone call got
patched to my classroom,
Copy !req
903. and it was his
brother, Todd.
Copy !req
904. And Todd said,
"He's gone."
Copy !req
905. I was like,
"What do you mean?"
Copy !req
906. He's like, "He's gone."
Copy !req
907. And he was
crying hysterically,
Copy !req
908. and I just hung up the phone
and ran out of the building,
Copy !req
909. and Shane was in college.
Copy !req
910. Yeah, I got that call.
I'll never forget it.
Copy !req
911. I'm walking back
through the quad,
Copy !req
912. there's kids going to class,
and I got a phone call
Copy !req
913. from my father's
childhood friend.
Copy !req
914. "Your father died
last night."
Copy !req
915. And it just like...
everybody around you is
Copy !req
916. moving fast and
you're just still.
Copy !req
917. I just remember being numb.
Copy !req
918. It rocked me.
Copy !req
919. What I heard, um,
at that time, he was, uh,
Copy !req
920. you know, going through
a tough time.
Copy !req
921. I thought of his
family instantly,
Copy !req
922. because I know how much
he loved his family and
Copy !req
923. his wife, you know,
I just felt for them.
Copy !req
924. He died of an overdose.
Copy !req
925. Accidental overdose, but...
Copy !req
926. you know the word
accidental and overdose
Copy !req
927. should just not be in
the same sentence.
Copy !req
928. How do you accidentally,
"Oops!" Took one too many?
Copy !req
929. He took one too many
for a long time.
Copy !req
930. On January 19th, 2007,
Copy !req
931. at just 45 years of age,
Copy !req
932. Bam Bam Bigelow dies by
what authorities call an
Copy !req
933. accidental overdose,
from a cocktail of
Copy !req
934. illicit and
prescription drugs.
Copy !req
935. I didn't grieve.
Copy !req
936. There was none for me,
because I was scrambling.
Copy !req
937. I had kids, they couldn't
see me break down.
Copy !req
938. They couldn't see me weak.
Copy !req
939. And that's all I became,
was a provider.
Copy !req
940. Like, I didn't have time
to coddle and nurture.
Copy !req
941. That's the hardest
part on me now.
Copy !req
942. Towards the end it was very
difficult with my mother.
Copy !req
943. Just because, that was
my dad, that was my hero.
Copy !req
944. My mom had to make a
really tough decision.
Copy !req
945. You know, for a while I
never understood
Copy !req
946. why we couldn't
just go see dad.
Copy !req
947. And when you don't
understand
Copy !req
948. you just think it's selfish.
Copy !req
949. But then when you do,
Copy !req
950. you become appreciative
that you weren't
Copy !req
951. exposed to something
that would've been
Copy !req
952. just so heart breaking.
Copy !req
953. As a father I think it just
digs into you that
Copy !req
954. when you think, if there was
no compunction for
Copy !req
955. Bammer to reach out for
some kind of help,
Copy !req
956. that he must have thought
that he had it under control.
Copy !req
957. He must have figured this is
not really a problem.
Copy !req
958. Because of how much he
talked about his kids.
Copy !req
959. It's been just-
Copy !req
960. honouring the
legacy of Bam Bam.
Copy !req
961. Now collision course!
Copy !req
962. I never really got to stop
and acknowledge my own pain.
Copy !req
963. You always think about if
you had one last chance
Copy !req
964. what you would say.
I think there's more ask.
Copy !req
965. Just why?
Copy !req
966. His kids lost their dad
at a young age.
Copy !req
967. It's sad, you know, because
Bigelow like so many of us
Copy !req
968. wrestlers during that time,
was on the road a lot.
Copy !req
969. You know,
you're not around.
Copy !req
970. You're making a living
for your family.
Copy !req
971. You mother—-er.
Copy !req
972. But, through
years of therapy,
Copy !req
973. I know you had no control.
Copy !req
974. It's not your fault.
I don't blame you.
Copy !req
975. You know nobody wakes up
in the morning and says,
Copy !req
976. "I'm gonna be
a drug addict today."
Copy !req
977. You wake up every morning
and you're like,
Copy !req
978. "Today is gonna
be a change."
Copy !req
979. But I would call him a
mother—-er first.
Copy !req
980. Just 'cause he
would expect that.
Copy !req
981. I can't fault him
for what happened.
Copy !req
982. You had to keep going.
Copy !req
983. That's how you put the
bread on the table.
Copy !req
984. I signed all the rights
over to the kids,
Copy !req
985. so they got all the
royalty cheques.
Copy !req
986. So he, in his death,
still supported them.
Copy !req
987. Nobody.
There's nobody.
Copy !req
988. When I think of pro wrestling
I think of power,
Copy !req
989. I think of size,
I think of my father.
Copy !req
990. World heavyweight champion,
Copy !req
991. The Beast from the East,
Bam Bam Bigelow!
Copy !req
992. He was a great person,
and how he lived and
Copy !req
993. all the wonderful things
that he did for people,
Copy !req
994. and the great father
that he was,
Copy !req
995. should be what
is remembered.
Copy !req
996. Not how he died, because
that's a terrible story,
Copy !req
997. but he left such a legacy.
Copy !req
998. Bam Bam!
Look at that maneuver!
Copy !req
999. He was that 1%.
Copy !req
