1. At the dawn of the 1980s,
Copy !req
2. Magnum T.A. burst onto
the wrestling scene.
Copy !req
3. With his athleticism,
charisma,
Copy !req
4. and movie star good looks,
he quickly became
Copy !req
5. a top star for Jim Crockett
Promotions,
Copy !req
6. and a valuable weapon
in the company's
Copy !req
7. war against
Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
8. All the big guns come here
when they want to
Copy !req
9. get it done, and that's why
Magnum T.A. is here.
Copy !req
10. At that point in time,
Jim Crockett Promotions
Copy !req
11. was the only other wrestling
promotion in the country
Copy !req
12. that had the ability to
compete with Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
13. There's only one
Hulk Hogan, daddy.
Copy !req
14. I believe that Magnum
could've been for Crockett
Copy !req
15. what Hulk Hogan
was for WWF.
Copy !req
16. There's only
one Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
17. There will ever be
only one Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
18. It was like being
a rock star.
Copy !req
19. I was given the
keys to the city.
Copy !req
20. The sky is the limit.
Copy !req
21. But Magnum's meteoric rise
to fame and fortune
Copy !req
22. would end in an instant.
Copy !req
23. The blow took me
right into the roof,
Copy !req
24. and my C5 vertebrae
exploded.
Copy !req
25. Throwing his life and career
into tragedy and chaos.
Copy !req
26. He is in the intensive
care unit at
Copy !req
27. Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
Copy !req
28. Terry Allen was the future.
Copy !req
29. You put all your cards
in that basket and,
Copy !req
30. the basket was turned over.
Copy !req
31. This, you know,
devastating thing
Copy !req
32. changed everyone's reality.
Copy !req
33. Healthy, wealthy, wise.
Copy !req
34. All of a sudden,
boom... gone.
Copy !req
35. The story of
Magnum T.A. is
Copy !req
36. the story of what
might have been...
Copy !req
37. not just for the man,
himself,
Copy !req
38. but for the entire
wrestling world.
Copy !req
39. He was told he would
not walk again.
Copy !req
40. This is WrestleMania.
Copy !req
41. This is the thing of today.
Hulkamania is running wild.
Copy !req
42. In the early 1980s,
professional wrestling
Copy !req
43. explodes in popularity,
dominated by Vince McMahon,
Copy !req
44. his star, Hulk Hogan,
Copy !req
45. and his powerhouse
promotion, the WWF.
Copy !req
46. This Vince McMahon
is a genius.
Copy !req
47. But down south, a rival
wrestling company
Copy !req
48. stands in defiance of the
growing McMahon empire.
Copy !req
49. They know that Jim Crockett...
Copy !req
50. the wrestling network
is the best thing going!
Copy !req
51. That's why they're here!
Yeah!
Copy !req
52. As smaller companies
across the country fold,
Copy !req
53. Jim Crockett Promotions
represents one of the last
Copy !req
54. lines of defence against the
WWF's nationwide takeover.
Copy !req
55. But where the WWF showcases
kid-friendly cartoon personas,
Copy !req
56. Crockett's brand of
pro wrestling is a world of
Copy !req
57. blood, grit, and glamour.
Copy !req
58. Soon to appear on Lifestyles
of the Rich and Famous,
Copy !req
59. Mr. Jim Cornette!
Copy !req
60. Woo!
Copy !req
61. I'm Jim Cornette.
Copy !req
62. I've been involved in
wrestling for over 40 years,
Copy !req
63. but in the 1980s, I was one
of the managers that led
Copy !req
64. many of Magnum T.A.'s
opponents to the ring.
Copy !req
65. Crockett,
in the Carolinas,
Copy !req
66. had a tremendously strong
base of fans.
Copy !req
67. And also, that roster-
Copy !req
68. from Ric Flair, and
Dusty Rhodes...
Copy !req
69. The Road Warriors,
The Rock 'N Roll Express...
Copy !req
70. It went on and on.
Copy !req
71. That was the gathering place
now for all the top wrestlers
Copy !req
72. that were going to
oppose Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
73. Crockett Promotions,
around 1985,
Copy !req
74. we are on the rise.
Copy !req
75. We were clicking on
all four cylinders.
Copy !req
76. My name is David Crockett.
Copy !req
77. Jim Crockett is my father.
Copy !req
78. I'm Tony Schiavone joined
by Mr. Jim Crockett,
Copy !req
79. President of Jim
Crockett Promotions.
Copy !req
80. You had Vince McMahon,
WWF,
Copy !req
81. that was wanting to
take over the country.
Copy !req
82. It is well documented
in the official
Copy !req
83. World Wrestling Federation
magazine that
Copy !req
84. Mr. Hogan's popularity is,
indeed, worldwide.
Copy !req
85. And, we liked what
we were doing.
Copy !req
86. So, we said, "Nah,
that's not gonna happen."
Copy !req
87. We had a great staple
of wrestlers.
Copy !req
88. Nobody can beat
the American Dream!
Copy !req
89. But, we needed that
special something.
Copy !req
90. Crockett needed
somebody for the future.
Copy !req
91. And if you had a character,
kickass babyface over here,
Copy !req
92. and a legend over here,
you always needed
Copy !req
93. the matinee idol,
the movie star
Copy !req
94. right there in the
middle of everything.
Copy !req
95. Who would be the good guy?
Copy !req
96. Earliest memories of
television, like 6,
Copy !req
97. 7 years old, were watching
professional wrestling
Copy !req
98. with my dad.
Copy !req
99. And it evoked all these
emotions of watching guys
Copy !req
100. that were like real
live action superheroes.
Copy !req
101. So, as a little kid,
you start thinking, maybe,
Copy !req
102. maybe this is
something I could do.
Copy !req
103. And, I was the most unlikely
guy to be doing this
Copy !req
104. 'cause I had no
athletic background.
Copy !req
105. My name is Terry Allen,
better known as Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
106. I started out wrestling
in the 9th grade,
Copy !req
107. and I applied myself to it
like nothing I'd ever done.
Copy !req
108. So, as I worked my
way up the ranks,
Copy !req
109. by the time I'm a senior,
Copy !req
110. I end up winning the
state tournament.
Copy !req
111. Magnum is from
Norfolk, Virginia.
Copy !req
112. And, he was working at
a bar in Virginia Beach,
Copy !req
113. and that's where tons of the
Carolina wrestlers would go,
Copy !req
114. because that
was kind of a...
Copy !req
115. a vacation spot.
Copy !req
116. When you were up in that part
of Virginia for the weekend,
Copy !req
117. the guys would go party
in Virginia Beach.
Copy !req
118. In the 70s,
I was in college,
Copy !req
119. and I was working security
in nightclubs and bars,
Copy !req
120. and the wrestlers
would come down to
Copy !req
121. the place where I worked.
Copy !req
122. And you know,
they're, you know,
Copy !req
123. ribbing with me
because I'm a big guy.
Copy !req
124. There was a guy
there that saw me,
Copy !req
125. and his name
was Buzz Sawyer.
Copy !req
126. Buzz Sawyer was one of
the most talented in-ring
Copy !req
127. performers in the
history of wrestling,
Copy !req
128. and was one of the
most obnoxious,
Copy !req
129. crooked, surly, and...
Copy !req
130. discontented son of a bitches
in the world outside of it.
Copy !req
131. So, Buzz Sawyer sees me.
Copy !req
132. He's like all buddy-buddy.
Copy !req
133. Said, "Look, you know,
it's really hard to get
Copy !req
134. into this business,
but I can help you."
Copy !req
135. I feel like this guy is
really gonna help me.
Copy !req
136. So, now I see this as a
potential career path.
Copy !req
137. So, he comes even to
my parents' home and
Copy !req
138. talks with all of us.
Copy !req
139. Tell us, you know, how tough
the business is to get in,
Copy !req
140. but he has these inroads,
and he can help me.
Copy !req
141. And he tells me a wrestling
license costs $10,000.
Copy !req
142. 10 grand.
Copy !req
143. And, my mom and dad are
like, "Phew, 10 grand."
Copy !req
144. 10 grand, might as well
have been 100 grand in,
Copy !req
145. you know, 1979.
Copy !req
146. My mom believed in me,
and she went to her dad,
Copy !req
147. my Granddaddy Smith,
and...
Copy !req
148. he gave me the money.
Copy !req
149. Gave me the money.
He said, "I believe in you."
Copy !req
150. And, so...
Copy !req
151. we give him the
money and, you know,
Copy !req
152. so I'm gonna get in. He's
gonna get, get me in the door.
Copy !req
153. The next thing I know,
Buzz has left the Carolinas.
Copy !req
154. "Psh!"
Mind blown.
Copy !req
155. Buzz was just trying to bilk
an aspiring young man out of
Copy !req
156. some money, and saw
where he could get it.
Copy !req
157. He was an asshole!
Copy !req
158. Wrestling licenses are
still a real thing,
Copy !req
159. and were a real
thing at that point,
Copy !req
160. in states that have
athletic commissions.
Copy !req
161. If they have an
athletic commission,
Copy !req
162. you have to be licensed to
be a wrestler, a manager,
Copy !req
163. an announcer,
or whatever.
Copy !req
164. They generally cost
between 10 and $25.
Copy !req
165. So, there was no-
Buzz Sawyer
Copy !req
166. wasn't gonna
sell Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
167. any kind of
wrestling license.
Copy !req
168. No.
Copy !req
169. So, one night, I tell Jimmy
Garvin my Buzz Sawyer story.
Copy !req
170. Jimmy knew Buzz.
Copy !req
171. He knew all too well
what was going on.
Copy !req
172. Garvin does not lose his
cool as quickly as Sawyer.
Copy !req
173. I encouraged him to
go find Buzz and
Copy !req
174. ask Buzz to
hook him up.
Copy !req
175. And I literally believe
he left the next day,
Copy !req
176. and drove to Oregon.
Copy !req
177. I found out what his
apartment number was,
Copy !req
178. and—
Knocking on the door.
Copy !req
179. He opens the door, kind of
surprised to see me.
Copy !req
180. So, he takes me down to
the ring the next day,
Copy !req
181. and I work out for
two solid hours.
Copy !req
182. I learn how to tie up,
hit the ropes,
Copy !req
183. do some spots,
take a backdrop.
Copy !req
184. It wasn't uncommon,
in those days
Copy !req
185. if a guy saw some
young perspective talent
Copy !req
186. that wanted to train or
wanted to be taught:
Copy !req
187. "Yeah, I'll take this guy.
He's an idiot.
Copy !req
188. We'll run him off,
whatever."
Copy !req
189. But in this case,
it came back to
Copy !req
190. bite him because Magnum
turned out to be
Copy !req
191. a bigger star
than Buzz ever was.
Copy !req
192. And, the next night,
Copy !req
193. I wrestled Buzz
on television.
Copy !req
194. They all think, "Hey,
he did a pretty good job."
Copy !req
195. They think I've been
in the business.
Copy !req
196. They think I'm trained.
They think Buzz trained me.
Copy !req
197. Well, he did.
He trained me for two hours.
Copy !req
198. And then, I got booked
7 nights a week.
Copy !req
199. I knew Magnum
from the get-go.
Copy !req
200. He burst onto the scene,
man, and he was...
Copy !req
201. a breath of fresh
air to watch.
Copy !req
202. Jake "The Snake" Roberts!
Copy !req
203. I am what's left of Jake
"The Snake" Roberts.
Copy !req
204. He was no
sucker, man.
Copy !req
205. He was just so hungry
and wanted it so bad.
Copy !req
206. Terry's unrelenting drive
and raw talent
Copy !req
207. earn him admiration
from promoters,
Copy !req
208. fans,
and fellow wrestlers.
Copy !req
209. His hard work pays off
when a single phone call
Copy !req
210. propels his career
to new heights.
Copy !req
211. Eddie Graham, that owns
Florida Championship
Copy !req
212. Wrestling, so he, boom,
picks up the phone,
Copy !req
213. gives me a call, and he said,
"I got a spot for you."
Copy !req
214. And so, again, I packed up
all my belongings and
Copy !req
215. off I go back across the
country, and head south.
Copy !req
216. That's where the true
education of the
Copy !req
217. wrestling business really
started, the day I
Copy !req
218. stepped foot in that
territory of Florida.
Copy !req
219. From Virginia Beach,
Virginia,
Copy !req
220. weighing in at 240 pounds,
Terry Allen!
Copy !req
221. So, when I first came to
the territory in Florida,
Copy !req
222. the booker, the creative
development guy...
Copy !req
223. American Dream,
Dusty Rhodes.
Copy !req
224. Never met him.
Copy !req
225. I've seen his pictures on
the cover of magazines.
Copy !req
226. Well, Dusty Rhodes
was one of the
Copy !req
227. greatest wrestlers
ever, man.
Copy !req
228. The best showman ever,
without a doubt.
Copy !req
229. He was our
Muhammad Ali.
Copy !req
230. The booker of a major
wrestling promotion is like
Copy !req
231. the major motion picture
director in Hollywood.
Copy !req
232. He decides the final
say on the actors,
Copy !req
233. who's gonna
play the parts.
Copy !req
234. How they're gonna do it,
what their demeanour is,
Copy !req
235. the way that the
thing is shot.
Copy !req
236. So, the booker
was the director.
Copy !req
237. And Dusty Rhodes
saw in Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
238. his next movie star.
Copy !req
239. Dusty had the potential
to see talent and charisma
Copy !req
240. within people that didn't
know how to bring it out.
Copy !req
241. Right here is the global
Copy !req
242. tag team champion,
Terry Allen!
Copy !req
243. And he became the most
influential guy on my career,
Copy !req
244. of anybody that I ever
came in contact with.
Copy !req
245. Dusty pushed
Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
246. to the heights
of pro wrestling.
Copy !req
247. He believed in him,
he teamed with him.
Copy !req
248. They were personal friends.
Copy !req
249. Hello, everyone,
this is Bill Apter.
Copy !req
250. And I am the most
recognizable journalist and
Copy !req
251. independent broadcaster in
the world of pro wrestling
Copy !req
252. for the past 51 years.
Copy !req
253. People used to say that he
looked like Tom Selleck.
Copy !req
254. And Andre The Giant
thought so much about that,
Copy !req
255. that he said to Magnum,
"You look like Tom Selleck.
Copy !req
256. You should call yourself
Magnum T.A."
Copy !req
257. And that's how it happened.
Copy !req
258. Back in the 80s, there was a
TV show with a star
Copy !req
259. named Tom Selleck, and it
was about a detective,
Copy !req
260. and his name
was Magnum, p.I.
Copy !req
261. So, Andre looks over at me
and he says,
Copy !req
262. "Boss," he said,
"you're ready."
Copy !req
263. And I said, "What
do you mean, I'm ready?"
Copy !req
264. He said, "You're ready
for something."
Copy !req
265. He said, "But you
need a handle."
Copy !req
266. So, he tied it all together
and took the Magnum and
Copy !req
267. the Terry Allen, "T.A.", and
put that name together.
Copy !req
268. After just over a year
in Florida, Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
269. returns to the road, this
time joining the high-octane
Copy !req
270. wrestling circuit
known as Mid-South.
Copy !req
271. Magnum T.A.!
Copy !req
272. Action continues now the
popular star, Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
273. Here's Buddy Nichols
to tell us about it.
Copy !req
274. He's really a very
personable young man,
Copy !req
275. one with a lot of
wrestling talent.
Copy !req
276. And as we mentioned
last week,
Copy !req
277. one with a lot of desire and
an opportunity to go
Copy !req
278. a long way in this
wrestling business.
Copy !req
279. So, I come to Mid-South
as Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
280. I don't know what
Magnum T.A. means
Copy !req
281. at this point in time.
It's a name.
Copy !req
282. I don't know how this
translates into me.
Copy !req
283. And, nor do the people that
have brought me in.
Copy !req
284. So, one week they're telling
me to wear suits and ties.
Copy !req
285. And, we do that for a
couple weeks and they say,
Copy !req
286. "You don't really seem
comfortable in that."
Copy !req
287. Oh, then they say,
"Well, maybe..."
Copy !req
288. you know, punk rock
was kind of a thing,
Copy !req
289. they wanted me to wear like
some punk rock clothes.
Copy !req
290. I'm not comfortable
at all in this,
Copy !req
291. but we go through all
these little things
Copy !req
292. they're trying to do.
Nothing's clicking.
Copy !req
293. So, I call Dusty up.
Copy !req
294. I said, "I need to
do something else.
Copy !req
295. They don't know
what to do with me."
Copy !req
296. He said, "I got it, baby.
I got it, it's all good."
Copy !req
297. He said, "Well, I'll tell
you what you do." He said,
Copy !req
298. "You go down and buy you a
brand-new Harley Davison."
Copy !req
299. So, I bought a motorcycle
jacket when I bought the
Copy !req
300. new bike, and I ride that
bike into town with
Copy !req
301. that jacket on, and
everybody looks,
Copy !req
302. and it changed the
whole perception,
Copy !req
303. immediately,
of who I was.
Copy !req
304. Clint Eastwood,
and Charles Bronson,
Copy !req
305. and Bruce Lee,
and John Wayne
Copy !req
306. all wrapped up in one
package in a leather jacket.
Copy !req
307. He had the perfect look
for professional wrestling.
Copy !req
308. The perfect size,
the physique, the face,
Copy !req
309. the whole nine yards.
Copy !req
310. This incredible "it" factor
that I had not seen in
Copy !req
311. a lot of pro wrestlers,
he had it.
Copy !req
312. He was going up
the ladder, man.
Copy !req
313. He had it all.
Copy !req
314. He was burning it up
there for a while.
Copy !req
315. But, of course...
Copy !req
316. not very long.
Copy !req
317. Magnum T.A. is a
rising star and
Copy !req
318. a fan-favourite in the
Mid-South territory
Copy !req
319. when he receives
an offer that will
Copy !req
320. change the course
of his career.
Copy !req
321. I get the phone call,
and Dusty says,
Copy !req
322. "I want to introduce you
to Jim Crockett."
Copy !req
323. He puts Jim Crockett on the
phone with me, and says,
Copy !req
324. "Look, I will promise you
if you come here,
Copy !req
325. I will give you the greatest
opportunity that anybody
Copy !req
326. could ever ask for
in the business."
Copy !req
327. I first met
Magnum T.A. when
Copy !req
328. he walked
into the office.
Copy !req
329. You know, here's
this tall, what-
Copy !req
330. 6"1, 6"2-
very well built,
Copy !req
331. blonde hair coming down.
Copy !req
332. These piercing eyes.
And this husky, raspy voice.
Copy !req
333. Looking at the women in
the office, they all-
Copy !req
334. you know,
they do that.
Copy !req
335. So, that is the
total package.
Copy !req
336. The camera, who is the
main judge, loved him.
Copy !req
337. All the fans have been
waiting for this man,
Copy !req
338. Magnum T.A.!
And here he is!
Copy !req
339. You didn't have to put lights
on him to make him look good.
Copy !req
340. He just,
he glowed.
Copy !req
341. Magnum T.A.'s coming
for one reason,
Copy !req
342. one reason only.
Copy !req
343. Coming for the US
heavyweight championship.
Copy !req
344. Almost immediately,
Crockett goes and
Copy !req
345. barters a deal to go on TBS,
on the SuperStation.
Copy !req
346. The moment we went
on the SuperStation,
Copy !req
347. everything changed.
Copy !req
348. They territory started
popping immediately and,
Copy !req
349. we blew the roof
off the place.
Copy !req
350. My name is
Tamara Howell.
Copy !req
351. And, I was married
to Terry Allen.
Copy !req
352. We were together
from 1981...
Copy !req
353. until 1988.
Copy !req
354. He got this
raincoat jacket.
Copy !req
355. He loved it. It was his
Jesse James look.
Copy !req
356. We did talk about
having a family,
Copy !req
357. but we were waiting
until he became
Copy !req
358. the world championship
title holder.
Copy !req
359. Here, we were at
the baptism of
Copy !req
360. Dusty and Michelle's
son, Cody.
Copy !req
361. That's pretty special.
Copy !req
362. The minute I make the
emotional decision that
Copy !req
363. I'm gonna settle down and
I'm gonna get married,
Copy !req
364. immediately,
my career path says,
Copy !req
365. "We want to promote you
as a sex symbol.
Copy !req
366. We want you to be
our superstar.
Copy !req
367. We want you to be the-
the people, everybody,
Copy !req
368. tear their hair out and
want to get a hold of."
Copy !req
369. He was the rock star.
Copy !req
370. The cheers for Magnum
were the squeals of
Copy !req
371. the women in
the audience.
Copy !req
372. It was hysteria.
Copy !req
373. It was just
absolute insanity.
Copy !req
374. And it was the wild,
wild west from
Copy !req
375. the partying standpoint,
Copy !req
376. the girls in every port,
in every place.
Copy !req
377. It was bad.
Copy !req
378. You know, it was like
Animal House, 24/7.
Copy !req
379. And more than any red
- blooded male can handle.
Copy !req
380. They were getting
the motel key and
Copy !req
381. panty treatment
every night.
Copy !req
382. It was insane.
Copy !req
383. They had more sex on
the way to the ring
Copy !req
384. than I've had in my life.
Copy !req
385. You always play
to the audience,
Copy !req
386. whether it's
male or female.
Copy !req
387. I mean,
the women crying?
Copy !req
388. They'd want to get close to
him after the match and
Copy !req
389. get blood off of him.
You know,
Copy !req
390. "Oh, I'm never washing
my hands again!"
Copy !req
391. Well, I definitely could
see his popularity.
Copy !req
392. We were in a mall.
Copy !req
393. We were in a boot store,
and this girl
Copy !req
394. just fainted,
seeing him.
Copy !req
395. She got all flustered, and
turned red, and fainted.
Copy !req
396. So, I think if everyone
thinks you're the
Copy !req
397. best thing since
sliced bread,
Copy !req
398. you might start
believing that.
Copy !req
399. I didn't work
outside of the home.
Copy !req
400. I always would unpack
his dressing bag
Copy !req
401. from the night before.
Copy !req
402. And, when I was doing that,
he had pictures in there.
Copy !req
403. I had taken out
the pictures,
Copy !req
404. and I just was
flipping through them.
Copy !req
405. And, then I stopped,
and I was like,
Copy !req
406. wait a minute,
I don't have that bag.
Copy !req
407. I thought it was
me in the picture,
Copy !req
408. but she had a different
handbag than
Copy !req
409. I would have carried so,
Copy !req
410. and I realized
that wasn't me.
Copy !req
411. And I hadn't been
wherever they were, so...
Copy !req
412. As Terry's rising fame pushes
his marriage to the brink,
Copy !req
413. a powerful opponent emerges,
a Soviet era strongman,
Copy !req
414. bringing the Cold War
to the wrestling ring.
Copy !req
415. Was I intimidated
by Magnum T.A.?
Copy !req
416. Ah, ah, I think it was the
other way around, ah...
Copy !req
417. I think he was
intimidated by me.
Copy !req
418. I am Nikita Koloff,
Copy !req
419. better known to the
wrestling fans as...
Copy !req
420. "The Russian Nightmare".
Copy !req
421. I hail from the great
state of Minnesota.
Copy !req
422. Not from Russia
like I portrayed
Copy !req
423. back in the
wrestling days.
Copy !req
424. Well, in the 80s,
the United States
Copy !req
425. and Russian
political situation-
Copy !req
426. here you have Magnum T.A.,
American made.
Copy !req
427. So, you had the
Russian might
Copy !req
428. against the American made.
Copy !req
429. Magnum T.A. or-
Copy !req
430. "Maga T.A.",
Copy !req
431. as I used to call him,
Copy !req
432. he had that whole look
of that all-American.
Copy !req
433. I'm like, man, this is,
you might say,
Copy !req
434. a match made in heaven.
Copy !req
435. And they had this
incredible series,
Copy !req
436. the 'Best of 7' series.
Copy !req
437. It was one of the
greatest feuds in
Copy !req
438. pro wrestling history.
Copy !req
439. Between the number
one challenger,
Copy !req
440. who is Nikita Koloff,
Copy !req
441. and the former champion,
Magnum T. A.
Copy !req
442. There's gotta be a clear-cut
winner for 4 matches.
Copy !req
443. And Nikita Koloff, there's
never gonna be a day
Copy !req
444. in my life that I'll look up
to a Russian and
Copy !req
445. call you a superior athlete.
Copy !req
446. Match #1, I have set myself
to be this physical specimen,
Copy !req
447. and so,
to go up one-nothing.
Copy !req
448. So, the way we just built
the story and how each match
Copy !req
449. was finished, you know,
whether it was a,
Copy !req
450. a dominating
victory on my part.
Copy !req
451. Going up two to nothing.
Copy !req
452. And then to go up
three to nothing.
Copy !req
453. And then he catches me
by surprise,
Copy !req
454. and he wins that first.
Copy !req
455. Three to one.
Copy !req
456. And the winner
of match #4...
Copy !req
457. Magnum T.A.!
Copy !req
458. He slips by and wins,
three to two.
Copy !req
459. Oh, my gosh,
there's hope.
Copy !req
460. There's hope for America.
Copy !req
461. Match #6, and he squeaks
out another victory,
Copy !req
462. and now it's three to three.
Copy !req
463. And it's gonna come down
to that final match, #7.
Copy !req
464. The man standing before you
right now is
Copy !req
465. the man that's gonna
take it all home.
Copy !req
466. Bring it home right here,
United States of America.
Copy !req
467. It couldn't have been
set up any better.
Copy !req
468. And Nikita Koloff
gets the 1, 2, 3.
Copy !req
469. Man, I want to tell you,
Copy !req
470. the fans were not happy
that night, boy.
Copy !req
471. Talk about heat.
Copy !req
472. The heat on me elevated
Copy !req
473. to a whole 'nother level.
Copy !req
474. And so, of course, Magnum,
now he's got to chase and
Copy !req
475. get back that US title
that, by the way,
Copy !req
476. sets you up as #1
contender for the
Copy !req
477. world heavyweight title
back in those days.
Copy !req
478. Now the chase is on.
Copy !req
479. 1986 was pretty much the
culmination of a
Copy !req
480. long-running rivalry between
Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair
Copy !req
481. for the world title.
Copy !req
482. And next in line, whenever
that trigger would have
Copy !req
483. been pulled, was Ric Flair
and Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
484. Into '87, '88,
that would have been
Copy !req
485. the direction
they were going.
Copy !req
486. Who's gonna be the
world champion?
Copy !req
487. Who's gonna be the
dominant guy in the NWA-
Copy !req
488. Ric Flair or
Magnum T.A.?
Copy !req
489. In the 70s, 80s,
Copy !req
490. the National Wrestling
Alliance World's
Copy !req
491. Heavyweight title is the
most coveted wrestling title
Copy !req
492. you could go after.
Copy !req
493. That 10 pounds of gold
belt was an amazing thing.
Copy !req
494. And he was gonna
get that...
Copy !req
495. no doubt about it.
Copy !req
496. Because, the powers that
be loved him, you know.
Copy !req
497. And they trusted him.
Copy !req
498. The "powers that be" are
the promoters of the
Copy !req
499. National Wrestling Alliance,
the governing body of the
Copy !req
500. majority of the nation's
regional territories,
Copy !req
501. including Jim Crockett
Promotions.
Copy !req
502. There was a meeting
that Dusty, and I,
Copy !req
503. and Jim Crockett had,
Copy !req
504. where we flew
up to New York,
Copy !req
505. went out to dinner.
Copy !req
506. And, they told me that the
decision had been made,
Copy !req
507. the NWA had blessed it,
and that I was gonna be
Copy !req
508. the next world's
heavyweight champion.
Copy !req
509. The trajectory was to
take the next step,
Copy !req
510. move away from Nikita
so I could
Copy !req
511. move back into that chase.
Copy !req
512. But in the meantime,
we've got this new,
Copy !req
513. brash, fresh,
smack-talking heel
Copy !req
514. named Jimmy Garvin
that comes in.
Copy !req
515. And we got this great
new opportunity.
Copy !req
516. This is "Gorgeous"
Jimmy Garvin!
Copy !req
517. And this angle with Terry,
and Patty and I
Copy !req
518. was gonna be huge.
Copy !req
519. And I have confidence because
I know that I'm the greatest
Copy !req
520. athlete in the world,
and nobody can beat me.
Copy !req
521. But, you know, I had that
match with him in
Copy !req
522. Greenville, South Carolina
that night...
Copy !req
523. heck of a match,
and we were
Copy !req
524. getting ready to blow the
territory wide open.
Copy !req
525. It just never happened
because that was
Copy !req
526. the night of the incident.
Copy !req
527. And now, here's your host,
senior editor of
Copy !req
528. Pro Wrestling Illustrated,
Bill Apter!
Copy !req
529. Last week's show
with Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
530. got such a great response,
we've asked the
Copy !req
531. US champ, Magnum T.A.,
to be with us again this week.
Copy !req
532. Magnum, 1985 was a
darn good year for you.
Copy !req
533. What's '86 have
in store for you?
Copy !req
534. Well, '86 will be a
continuation of the quest
Copy !req
535. that I started in 1985,
which was for the world's
Copy !req
536. heavyweight championship
held by Ric Flair.
Copy !req
537. He was going right to the top.
Copy !req
538. I could not see any road
taking him
Copy !req
539. anywhere else
except to the top.
Copy !req
540. We had everything...
Copy !req
541. sunk into him.
Terry Allen was the future.
Copy !req
542. As Magnum T.A.
closes in on
Copy !req
543. the heavyweight title,
Copy !req
544. he begins living the
life of a world champion.
Copy !req
545. At that time, I had more
money than I had sense.
Copy !req
546. I walked in the
Porsche dealership,
Copy !req
547. and they had a brand-new
911 Turbo sitting out
Copy !req
548. on the floor, and
that was the Mac Daddy.
Copy !req
549. "Write me up,
I'm taking it."
Copy !req
550. It was quick and it
was cool, and...
Copy !req
551. I had the need for speed,
like Top Gun.
Copy !req
552. You know, it had a
combustion engine in it,
Copy !req
553. and it was loud, and it
was fast. I liked it.
Copy !req
554. My plan was to have a run
with the belt, I'm 27.
Copy !req
555. By the time I'm 30,
out of it,
Copy !req
556. and then go
drive NASCARs.
Copy !req
557. I didn't want to be running
around in my underwear
Copy !req
558. in front of people
at 37 years' old.
Copy !req
559. I thought that
was ridiculous.
Copy !req
560. On October 14th, 1986,
Copy !req
561. after defeating Gorgeous
Jimmy Garvin
Copy !req
562. in front of a roaring
crowd in South Carolina...
Copy !req
563. Magnum T.A. hits
the road in his
Copy !req
564. prized Porsche 911.
Copy !req
565. I'm 5 minutes
from my house.
Copy !req
566. I'm on a two-lane road that
Copy !req
567. I've driven hundreds
of times, and it's like
Copy !req
568. the horse turns the
corner and knows
Copy !req
569. the barn's right there,
and I'm on the track.
Copy !req
570. It was raining so hard,
you know, coming back,
Copy !req
571. you could barely see.
Copy !req
572. The road that I was traveling
on that night had a little,
Copy !req
573. slight bend curve in it.
Copy !req
574. Right in the middle
of the curve,
Copy !req
575. was a little divot in the
road where water had
Copy !req
576. gathered probably
2, 3 inches of water
Copy !req
577. all the way
across the road.
Copy !req
578. When I went around the
corner and that dip
Copy !req
579. right in the middle,
the car hydroplaned.
Copy !req
580. When a car hydroplanes,
it means your tire patch
Copy !req
581. loses contact with that
road, so my tires were
Copy !req
582. actually floating on
top of that water.
Copy !req
583. So, I did what I had
done before to counteract
Copy !req
584. something, and I made
the situation worse.
Copy !req
585. The car spun violently
the other direction,
Copy !req
586. and I broadsided
a telephone pole
Copy !req
587. so hard that it
cut it in half.
Copy !req
588. It happened so fast,
it was violent.
Copy !req
589. And the blow was like I had
been hit by a freight train.
Copy !req
590. I didn't know I was not
okay until I couldn't move.
Copy !req
591. And I was so big in the car
that my shoulder was
Copy !req
592. right up against the door.
Copy !req
593. And I had just maybe
an inch of headroom,
Copy !req
594. so the blow took me
right into the roof.
Copy !req
595. The emergency crew came,
and one of them
Copy !req
596. grabbed me by my jacket
to try to pull me up.
Copy !req
597. And the other guy stopped him
and said, "No, don't."
Copy !req
598. I can't move, so
they use the jaws of life,
Copy !req
599. cut the whole top
of the car off,
Copy !req
600. peeled it back
like a tin can.
Copy !req
601. And, stabilize me, they
couldn't air lift me out
Copy !req
602. 'cause it was raining so hard,
took me by ambulance.
Copy !req
603. It changed my life,
it changed the people
Copy !req
604. I worked for,
it changed my family.
Copy !req
605. It changed everybody
in a nanosecond.
Copy !req
606. The police called me.
Copy !req
607. They were taking him
to the hospital.
Copy !req
608. On my way to
the hospital...
Copy !req
609. I was behind
the tow truck that
Copy !req
610. had his Porsche on it.
Copy !req
611. And, to see the
Porsche the way it was,
Copy !req
612. was very frightening.
Copy !req
613. The roof was off...
Copy !req
614. It was a mess,
it looked like...
Copy !req
615. he probably was dead.
Copy !req
616. Well, they took me aside
and they told me that
Copy !req
617. he had fractured
his vertebrae.
Copy !req
618. They needed to get him
into surgery, quickly.
Copy !req
619. My first view of a medical
professional that's giving me
Copy !req
620. a diagnosis, you know,
he would use the words,
Copy !req
621. "C5 quadriplegic," and,
"neck-down paralysis".
Copy !req
622. Million to one shot of
ever attaining any level of
Copy !req
623. mobility beyond sitting in
a wheelchair and being
Copy !req
624. taken care of by someone for
the rest of your life.
Copy !req
625. Matter of fact, they were
just trying to figure out
Copy !req
626. how I was
gonna breathe.
Copy !req
627. They said my lungs
were paralyzed.
Copy !req
628. I mean, they were saying
things to me like,
Copy !req
629. "Well, maybe you might be
able to be on
Copy !req
630. an iron lung instead
of a ventilator."
Copy !req
631. A guy's in
intensive care,
Copy !req
632. they've got him
all hooked up.
Copy !req
633. They keep him sedated.
Copy !req
634. You just fear for the worst.
You know, and it was...
Copy !req
635. you know, is he
truly gonna make it?
Copy !req
636. You know, what was
going through his mind?
Copy !req
637. They're shooting me up with
morphine every time I blink
Copy !req
638. because they can't
communicate with me.
Copy !req
639. If I try to
communicate anything,
Copy !req
640. they think I'm hurting.
Copy !req
641. So, I'm in such bad shape,
they're just zapping me
Copy !req
642. with the moon and stars.
Copy !req
643. My brother came in,
and he just said...
Copy !req
644. "He'll never, ever...
Copy !req
645. get in the ring again."
Copy !req
646. According to the
police report,
Copy !req
647. Allen was going south here
on Sardis Road,
Copy !req
648. away from town, when his
car went off the road
Copy !req
649. on the far side back there,
about 200 feet.
Copy !req
650. He apparently tried to
correct and bring it back
Copy !req
651. onto the road, but
it was slippery,
Copy !req
652. and he ended up
on this side,
Copy !req
653. slamming into this
telephone pole
Copy !req
654. with enough force
to break it in half.
Copy !req
655. Memorial spokesperson,
Cecily Newton,
Copy !req
656. explained that Magnum has a
spinal cord injury that is
Copy !req
657. localized to the 5th
cervical vertebrae.
Copy !req
658. And, it exploded.
Copy !req
659. It sent the bone fragments
back and created
Copy !req
660. compression on
the spinal cord.
Copy !req
661. It was on every
news channel.
Copy !req
662. You saw the pictures
of that car.
Copy !req
663. And it's an absolute miracle
that anybody was alive.
Copy !req
664. It was completely destroyed.
Copy !req
665. It was the front page of
The Charlotte Observer.
Copy !req
666. It's a type of situation
where you don't believe it
Copy !req
667. has happened until
you actually see him,
Copy !req
668. and no one has been
able to see him so,
Copy !req
669. we're still kind of stunned.
Copy !req
670. Radio, newspaper, we really
didn't have internet.
Copy !req
671. So, it was all
word of mouth.
Copy !req
672. I'm sorry, ma'am,
that's the only thing
Copy !req
673. I'm permitted to release
at this time.
Copy !req
674. Memorial Hospital has
fielded some 8 to 10,000
Copy !req
675. phone calls
about Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
676. since the wrestling
star was admitted.
Copy !req
677. The hospital lobby looks
like a florist convention.
Copy !req
678. I think he received the most
letters of anyone there
Copy !req
679. at their hospital.
Copy !req
680. I do have the newspaper
clippings and bags,
Copy !req
681. and bags of mail
we received.
Copy !req
682. The hospital got
so many calls,
Copy !req
683. they had to shut the
switchboard down.
Copy !req
684. There were candlelight vigils
of fans outside the hospital.
Copy !req
685. We love you, Magnum!
Copy !req
686. A lot of people held him
close to their heart.
Copy !req
687. Marion Allen has been with
her son since the accident.
Copy !req
688. This afternoon, she wanted
to thank all of the people
Copy !req
689. who have sent
prayers and cards.
Copy !req
690. It has been rough
in a lot of cases,
Copy !req
691. but I just don't think I
could have gotten through
Copy !req
692. this time without all that
love and positive energy that
Copy !req
693. I felt flowing around me.
Copy !req
694. Back in the day, like,
we didn't go to the hospital
Copy !req
695. 'cause kayfabe,
you know, I was a heel,
Copy !req
696. he was a babyface, so...
Copy !req
697. didn't go to the hospital.
We just didn't do it.
Copy !req
698. In the 1980s, wrestlers and
promoters still go to
Copy !req
699. great lengths to maintain
the illusion that wrestling
Copy !req
700. is real, a practice known
as "keeping kayfabe".
Copy !req
701. So, Flair and the Horsemen or
any of the heels couldn't...
Copy !req
702. go to the hospital
and see Magnum.
Copy !req
703. So, what they did was,
one of our people that
Copy !req
704. worked at the
office was also
Copy !req
705. a Charlotte City
police officer,
Copy !req
706. and he arranged with the
hospital to sneak Flair and
Copy !req
707. some of his guys up a back
stairway and into the room
Copy !req
708. in the middle of the night
so that nobody would
Copy !req
709. see 'em so they could go
and see Magnum.
Copy !req
710. Flair came to my room with
the 10 pounds of gold,
Copy !req
711. laid it on my chest, said,
"I'm giving you this one.
Copy !req
712. I'm waiting 'til you come
back in the ring and
Copy !req
713. get the other one."
Copy !req
714. When Magnum had his
accident, he was,
Copy !req
715. obviously, automatically
without income.
Copy !req
716. And in this case,
all of the guys
Copy !req
717. on the roster got
together and said,
Copy !req
718. "We will donate whatever
from our cheque
Copy !req
719. per week to Magnum,"
and Jim Crockett,
Copy !req
720. as the promoter, would match
the total of everything that
Copy !req
721. was collected by
the wrestlers.
Copy !req
722. So, whether it was $25
a week or $50 a week,
Copy !req
723. out of everybody's cheque,
but there were 30 guys...
Copy !req
724. and then he'd
match it.
Copy !req
725. I was there every day.
Copy !req
726. I went to the
hospital every day.
Copy !req
727. And I helped feed him,
bathe him,
Copy !req
728. helped him with
everything that he needed.
Copy !req
729. So, I don't really get to
have real soul searching
Copy !req
730. moments about all of
this for about 30 days.
Copy !req
731. When things cleared
a little bit,
Copy !req
732. I got out of the ICU,
got in a room-
Copy !req
733. people were able to start
relating things to me
Copy !req
734. that was going on in
the outside world that
Copy !req
735. I was pretty
oblivious to.
Copy !req
736. I love Magnum more than
I love everyone else.
Copy !req
737. Sad what happened
to him, man.
Copy !req
738. So talented and
in good shape.
Copy !req
739. Don't want it to end
his career or nothing.
Copy !req
740. Immediately I felt horrible.
Copy !req
741. Not for me, but for
my friends-
Copy !req
742. for Dusty, for Jimmy-
Copy !req
743. because I knew everything
they had built around me.
Copy !req
744. Their whole future,
and plans,
Copy !req
745. and everything is
built around me.
Copy !req
746. There was no Plan B.
Copy !req
747. Magnum T.A. was
this shooting star that
Copy !req
748. we attached ourselves to.
Copy !req
749. We were flying high
with him.
Copy !req
750. There was nothing
to stop us.
Copy !req
751. But then, that shooting
star went dark.
Copy !req
752. And with that,
we went dark.
Copy !req
753. We were trying
to find our way,
Copy !req
754. just like Magnum was
trying to find his way.
Copy !req
755. I'm on a tour in Japan.
Copy !req
756. My first night back
is in the
Copy !req
757. city of brotherly love,
Philadelphia.
Copy !req
758. Dusty and Jim Crockett
pull me into an office-
Copy !req
759. and it took 'em a few
minutes, as I recall,
Copy !req
760. to really convince me, like,
"No, we're not kidding."
Copy !req
761. Like, "This is for real.
Copy !req
762. He's lying in a hospital in
Charlotte, North Carolina
Copy !req
763. right now,
fighting for his life."
Copy !req
764. He's Dusty's guy!
Copy !req
765. He's his bread and butter.
Copy !req
766. He's groomed to be the next
world heavyweight champion,
Copy !req
767. so obviously this
leaves a void.
Copy !req
768. The last two weeks have
been very difficult for
Copy !req
769. Dusty Rhodes,
the American Dream.
Copy !req
770. Because Magnum T. A.
and Dusty Rhodes
Copy !req
771. made their own rules.
Copy !req
772. We loved fast cars
and fast times,
Copy !req
773. and that's the way we lived,
on the end of that lightning
Copy !req
774. bolt that crashes through
this vast earth of ours.
Copy !req
775. So, Dusty and Crockett
and everybody else
Copy !req
776. was faced with, well,
what do you do when
Copy !req
777. you're still making a movie,
but your star is gone?
Copy !req
778. You gotta find
a new star.
Copy !req
779. At that point, there was no
major wrestling name that
Copy !req
780. was just floating around
waiting for a phone call,
Copy !req
781. so Dusty looked within
his own roster,
Copy !req
782. and said, "Who can possibly
not take Magnum's spot and
Copy !req
783. look like him,
act like him,
Copy !req
784. and do the same thing
that will be seen as
Copy !req
785. a copy of him, but who can
take that spot and
Copy !req
786. do it in a completely
different way?"
Copy !req
787. And I have a
new partner...
Copy !req
788. And that's Nikita Koloff.
Copy !req
789. I'm like the #1 most-hated
guy in wrestling right now.
Copy !req
790. I mean, the fans
love to hate me.
Copy !req
791. And I'm Russian.
At this juncture,
Copy !req
792. I'm only two and a half
years into my career.
Copy !req
793. With the new plan in place,
the challenge
Copy !req
794. becomes selling the
story to the fans.
Copy !req
795. Jim Crockett called me,
and he says,
Copy !req
796. "Would you be willing to
come up to the hospital?
Copy !req
797. Magnum's asking for you.
Copy !req
798. He needs to talk to
his fans, nationally,
Copy !req
799. about what's going on,
and you guys' magazines
Copy !req
800. are the only
way to do this."
Copy !req
801. Reporting from
Magnum's bedside,
Copy !req
802. Bill Apter helps to engineer
Nikita's transformation
Copy !req
803. into a babyface hero.
Copy !req
804. Bill Apter was the only-
from the magazine side-
Copy !req
805. that I had built a bond
with, and I trusted.
Copy !req
806. The story that was worked on
was so heartwarming
Copy !req
807. 'cause Nikita Koloff- and
we had a picture of this
Copy !req
808. in one of the
wrestling magazines-
Copy !req
809. it was a tear coming down
Nikita's eyes for the cover,
Copy !req
810. and he said, "I cry for
Magnum T.A."
Copy !req
811. And for the fans,
for the very first time,
Copy !req
812. "Oh, my gosh, Nikita really
does have a heart."
Copy !req
813. There was literally
millions of people
Copy !req
814. like watching from
the sidelines now,
Copy !req
815. that they were
looking at this man,
Copy !req
816. that's now fighting
this real-life battle,
Copy !req
817. and they're all
pulling for me.
Copy !req
818. "How's he gonna
handle it?
Copy !req
819. What's he gonna do?"
Copy !req
820. Despite being
partially paralyzed and
Copy !req
821. confined to a
hospital for months,
Copy !req
822. Terry Allen
refuses to give up.
Copy !req
823. We all love him,
Copy !req
824. and we hope he gets better
so he can wrestle.
Copy !req
825. If not wrestle, at least,
you know,
Copy !req
826. be a part of the NWA still.
Copy !req
827. In April of 1987,
Copy !req
828. Crockett hatches a plan to
bring Magnum T.A.
Copy !req
829. back at one of their biggest
events of the year.
Copy !req
830. Baltimore Arena.
Copy !req
831. Terry Allen, aka,
Magnum T.A.'s gonna
Copy !req
832. make his first appearance
back in an arena.
Copy !req
833. And to see him again in
person, was just something...
Copy !req
834. it's hard to put into words.
Copy !req
835. Magnum...
T... A!
Copy !req
836. For me, watching Terry
Allen walk down that aisle,
Copy !req
837. that shows me that you can
overcome almost anything.
Copy !req
838. And never give up.
Copy !req
839. I mean, for a guy who was
supposed to be lifted
Copy !req
840. out of a bed and fed
the rest of his life,
Copy !req
841. and bathed and all of that,
to be able to walk under his
Copy !req
842. own power was an absolute
miracle in and of itself.
Copy !req
843. I mean, I got
choked up, like,
Copy !req
844. for real 'cause it
was a surreal moment.
Copy !req
845. I can remember the moment,
the emotion and the feel,
Copy !req
846. and the fans, and...
Copy !req
847. just like it was yesterday.
Copy !req
848. It was one of the most
emotional moments
Copy !req
849. I've ever experienced.
Copy !req
850. They saw me come from,
you know, death's door,
Copy !req
851. to never gonna walk again,
to my gosh,
Copy !req
852. he walked to the ring.
Copy !req
853. Despite his
enduring popularity,
Copy !req
854. it's clear that Magnum's
wrestling days have come to
Copy !req
855. a permanent end, leaving
his future uncertain.
Copy !req
856. It makes you have to
adjust your thinking.
Copy !req
857. You try to find a way to,
to fit back into the industry.
Copy !req
858. I was an intelligent guy.
I was still well spoken.
Copy !req
859. So, I worked as a colour
commentator for a while.
Copy !req
860. I'll be working with you,
Magnum.
Copy !req
861. I really look
forward to that.
Copy !req
862. I know all the fans in
Chicago look forward to
Copy !req
863. seeing you again.
Copy !req
864. It's gonna be great,
and I can't wait.
Copy !req
865. Magnum finding his niche in
wrestling after his accident
Copy !req
866. was very hard because,
being around it,
Copy !req
867. you always want
to be back in it.
Copy !req
868. The hard times continue for
Magnum behind the scenes.
Copy !req
869. We settled into a normal life.
Copy !req
870. I thought our marriage
was doing well, but...
Copy !req
871. We stayed together
for about a month
Copy !req
872. after I got out
of the hospital.
Copy !req
873. There was some infidelity
Copy !req
874. past the accident.
Copy !req
875. I felt like I had given
pretty much everything I had.
Copy !req
876. I just couldn't
do that anymore.
Copy !req
877. And it was so
overwhelming for her
Copy !req
878. because the
realities of all the things
Copy !req
879. that had taken place
on the road, you know,
Copy !req
880. she becomes aware
of because I'm forthcoming.
Copy !req
881. And I feel bad about it.
This is a bad deal.
Copy !req
882. I loved him very much.
Copy !req
883. It was hard for me
to leave him.
Copy !req
884. But, I think at some point,
you're just like,
Copy !req
885. once something is
done again,
Copy !req
886. you know,
how many times...
Copy !req
887. can you let that happen?
Copy !req
888. As Terry's
relationship ends,
Copy !req
889. the once mighty Crockett
Promotions implodes.
Copy !req
890. At this point, nobody
on either side of the
Copy !req
891. wrestling war or any of the
fans or the observers
Copy !req
892. realized exactly how crucial
this was gonna be
Copy !req
893. a point in the
wrestling business.
Copy !req
894. All of a sudden, they had
to start from scratch.
Copy !req
895. In 1988, Crockett makes
a deal with media mogul,
Copy !req
896. Ted Turner, leading
to the birth of
Copy !req
897. World Championship
Wrestling,
Copy !req
898. and the end of an era
for wrestling fans.
Copy !req
899. If Terry Allen had never
been in the accident,
Copy !req
900. the future of the NWA,
Jim Crockett Promotions...
Copy !req
901. the sky is the limit.
Copy !req
902. I do. I totally would've
been satisfied being
Copy !req
903. recognized as the world's
heavyweight champion,
Copy !req
904. having my run,
having my time in the sun,
Copy !req
905. and pass it off to
the next 20-year-old
Copy !req
906. that thought
he could do it better.
Copy !req
907. If he never had the accident-
movies, commercials,
Copy !req
908. lifestyle, the world
heavyweight championship.
Copy !req
909. When they see
Magnum T.A. come
Copy !req
910. out there to defend the
United States heavyweight
Copy !req
911. championship, they know that
I'm the man that they can
Copy !req
912. stand behind because I'm
always out there 100%.
Copy !req
913. You know, he was
right at the brink of
Copy !req
914. becoming the
world champion.
Copy !req
915. No doubt.
Copy !req
916. For it to be gone in the
blink of an eye, man...
Copy !req
917. It should be a
lesson for everybody.
Copy !req
918. You know, that life can
change—
Copy !req
919. that quick.
Copy !req
920. One time,
I remember Dusty and I,
Copy !req
921. we were in Columbia at the
Township Auditorium.
Copy !req
922. We're sitting on the
back steps, and he said,
Copy !req
923. "Can you imagine how
successful we could be as
Copy !req
924. something else if we
worked as hard at it
Copy !req
925. as we are at this?"
And, he was right.
Copy !req
926. I used the same commitment
with the new opportunity
Copy !req
927. as I had done
all those years,
Copy !req
928. and attacked it with
the same ferocity that
Copy !req
929. I had when I was chasing
the world title.
Copy !req
930. He is an individual
that will not give up.
Copy !req
931. Here's a man that is
classified as a quadriplegic.
Copy !req
932. He's not gonna let it
slow him down.
Copy !req
933. Terry decides to leave the
wrestling world behind and
Copy !req
934. sets his sights on
a new career
Copy !req
935. far from the squared circle.
Copy !req
936. Along the way, he also finds
another chance at love.
Copy !req
937. My name is Courtney
Blanchard-Allen,
Copy !req
938. and I am
Terry Allen's wife.
Copy !req
939. I first met
Terry Allen in 1997.
Copy !req
940. Both of us were going
through divorces.
Copy !req
941. And, we became really,
really good friends,
Copy !req
942. and leaned on each other
a lot for support
Copy !req
943. during that time.
Copy !req
944. And, through
that friendship,
Copy !req
945. developed an intimacy
and a relationship.
Copy !req
946. He's my best friend.
Copy !req
947. For me,
it's another miracle.
Copy !req
948. I was given a chance
to have a family.
Copy !req
949. So, I've done my
best to be steady,
Copy !req
950. make a secure home and
loving home for all the kids.
Copy !req
951. Make sure they're all
provided and well taken
Copy !req
952. care of and loved, and it's
been an amazing ride.
Copy !req
953. It was the end
of Magnum T.A.,
Copy !req
954. but it wasn't the
end of Terry Allen.
Copy !req
955. You can be sad for
what could've been,
Copy !req
956. what the wrestling fans
could've seen that
Copy !req
957. they would have enjoyed,
Copy !req
958. and what he could
have accomplished.
Copy !req
959. But you can't be sad overall
because he came back
Copy !req
960. from the wreck,
he's lived a long life.
Copy !req
961. He's been successful
in other things,
Copy !req
962. and he's had a
family and fans that
Copy !req
963. still care about him.
Copy !req
964. Magnum T.A.!
Copy !req
965. - That's a pin.
- That's it!
Copy !req
966. That's gotta be some
kind of a record!
Copy !req
967. He pinned him, it had to
be less than 15 seconds!
Copy !req
968. Oh, you know,
it's gotta be, yeah.
Copy !req
969. Yeah. He'll never
tell you that.
Copy !req
970. He had just a small
percentage chance of survival.
Copy !req
971. And, his ability to overcome
absolutely anything has
Copy !req
972. proven true every day
since that accident.
Copy !req
973. If he wasn't at peace
with how it ended,
Copy !req
974. it wouldn't be
so inspirational.
Copy !req
975. There are so many
people out there
Copy !req
976. that want to know
more about his story,
Copy !req
977. to be able to do the
things that he can do now.
Copy !req
978. I lived the dream most
people only dream of,
Copy !req
979. and never getting to
see come to fruition.
Copy !req
980. The other "What if?"
is, you know,
Copy !req
981. "What if I hadn't
woken up at all?"
Copy !req
982. And I am so
thankful that I did.
Copy !req
