118. son of a bitch Paul Heyman, back on the east coast.

128. He is like a godfather of death match wrestling,

133. And I remember my uncle Supreme telling me,

138. at me and said, "I now own a wrestling company and

139. you're now going to valet."

140. So, it was a crazy dynamic.

143. So, guys going around, they'd be wrestling,

164. I guess there was people that wanted to see it

165. 'cause it was funding XPW.

166. I remember leaving my desk...

167. going into the cafeteria,

168. and there being a woman dressed up as the

169. Statue of Liberty, and

170. three guys with presidential masks on...

171. partaking in the filming of a scene on the lunch table.

172. My name is Mike Hartsfield and I'm a former live event

173. producer for Extreme Pro Wrestling.

174. A lot of us would work our nine-hour day

175. and then stay another 6, or 7, or 8 hours.

176. There were nights I, I slept in the ring.

177. In order to get paid for wrestling,

205. At the time, I was working at a, a steakhouse.

206. And I'd show up to work with gig marks

207. on my head from bleeding.

208. And they would send me home.

211. Messiah was the big dog in XPW.

212. And he held two belts at one time, you know?

218. we were brainwashed.

219. I mean, there wasn't one guy on that roster who didn't

220. bust their ass for that company.

222. I don't know why they would do it,

223. but they did it.

224. In the long run, it was really, really... ing stupid

225. to do a lot of those dumb things that we did.

227. In XPW, I went by Altar Boy Luke.

228. I did a 450 off the balcony through a table

229. with thumbtacks with Supreme on it.

230. The thumb tacks had actually broke off into my hand and

231. I had to use pliers to pull the thumb tacks out.

232. It was always, "Okay, now what can you do next?

233. How can you top it?"

234. We want to do this fire spot so,

235. we sent a ring crew guy to get some lighter fluid.

236. And, it turns out he got charcoal fluid,

237. which is oil-based.

238. Regular lighter fluid, it's alcohol based,

239. so it burns up quick.

240. And it starts pooling up on this table and they put the

241. flame and it just... And it goes out.

242. We know what the image should look like and

243. it's not happening. It's not so, she keeps doing it,

244. and then we get this good flame,

245. and they go for the spot.

246. - Oh!

247. Since there was so much fluid,

248. his shirt got soaked.

249. It was horrible. It was absolutely horrible.

250. He was running around the ring, screaming.

251. I don't blame him.

252. And I saw Kaos pinning Supreme and lifting up,

253. and part of Supreme's skin is on Kaos and...

254. it was just, it was pretty traumatic.

255. I went straight to the hospital.

256. I remember going upstairs to go see my uncle Supreme,

257. all wrapped up.

258. And I remember him saying,

259. "Damn, that was a good match. That... ed it up."

260. Like, that was like his response.

261. The roster's willingness to sacrifice themselves

262. on a nightly basis...

263. along with tantalizing appearances of crossover

264. porn stars, made XPW a hit with local fans.

265. In response, ECW stages their first ever live show,

266. in Los Angeles.

267. Heatwave 2000!

268. Rob Black always got this 'I'm a mafio' mentality.

269. So, in his mind, ECW's coming into our territory.

272. They're coming to like kind of shut us up.

273. In retaliation, Rob Black orders his ring crew to

274. distribute XPW flyers at the event,

275. and has his top talent sit ringside to cause

276. a disrupting presence.

279. He had that ability to get you to say,

280. "..., dude. We're gonna ing die for you.

281. We'll die right here at Heatwave for you, brother.

282. Like, let's do it. Die for the cause."

283. Sitting in the front row,

284. and then, the main event comes on.

285. So, I turn to the hard cam and I throw the 'X' symbol,

286. like, this is it.

287. Security just mobs us, just grabbed my neck,

288. like, with their gorilla paws.

289. We're getting thrown out of this building.

290. They close the doors.

291. And it's quiet.

292. There's all this ruckus, and it's just quiet.

293. And we're like, "Where is everybody?"

294. Meanwhile, on the other side of the arena,

295. the XPW ring crew is not so lucky.

296. And we beat the out of them.

297. I had just had surgery on my leg so,

298. I hit somebody in the face with a crutch.

299. A guy came up, he's like, "New Jack, I don't want no trouble."

300. I was like... that, whop!

301. You don't go after Supreme, you don't go after Messiah,

302. you don't go after Kid Kaos.

303. You go after a couple of the 140-pound ring crew guys?

304. That's what you do?

305. 'Cause your company and you are a piece of...

306. And us at XPW are gonna flush you,

307. the piece of..., right down the toilet.

308. I straight up told Joey, I straight up told him,

309. this was stupid.

310. And in the back of my mind I'm also thinking,

311. Rob Black was supposed to be here.

312. Where, where is he?

313. In April 2001, financial ruin forces ECW to fold,

314. allowing rival promoter, Rob Black,

315. to welcome their top talent into XPW's

316. growing empire of extreme.

317. Everything that Rob Black said, like, happened,

318. you know, to be honest with you.

319. To his credit, like, "I'm gonna bring in Sabu,

320. I'm gonna bring in Shane Douglas." And we're like,

321. "Yeah, right," and then he'd bring this guy in and

322. we'd be like, Jesus, this is... this is real.

323. For... sake, we've got Terry Funk.

324. I mean, we were big.

325. Terry Funk...!

326. We made it.

327. It was gonna be ECW on steroids.

328. That's what he said.

329. But I laughed and I said, "Let's do it."

330. I'm Sabu.

331. After I left ECW, Rob Black called me up.

332. Then I go out there and I find out

333. it's a half a porn company.

334. Sabu is here, in XPW, ladies and gentlemen!

335. It's Sabu!

336. You know, and then he got like Candido,

337. Kronus, and... New Jack.

338. What you consider a wrestling ring,

339. I consider a killing field.

340. And a few other guys.

341. So, it started to look like a reject ECW, you know.

342. What they gonna say to me?

346. I was out there making money.

347. I got to eat.

348. And get some porn.

349. Well, what we have here is our warehouse,

350. which houses all of our

351. dirty, filthy pornography.

352. He was like, "Jack, get whatever you want."

353. I was driving the forklift around,

355. And I was shaking boxes out.

357. Despite the demise of his main competitor,

358. Rob continues to escalate the violence in XPW

362. And I put my hand up an the chair,

363. smacked me, and it looks brutal.

364. Like, he kills me with the chair.

365. As soon as we get to the back dressing room,

366. Rob Black's in the back and he's going,

367. "This is... ing XPW!

370. he's like, yelling at me.

371. And I'm going, "Wait, did I do something wrong?"

372. Because I was always taught, you know,

373. to put my hand up for a chair shot.

374. Don't stick your neck out.

375. So, Jerry Lynn pulls me aside and he goes,

376. "Don't listen to a thing he says.

377. He has no clue what he's talking about.

378. You did it right. You protected yourself,

379. it looked great." What I didn't know

380. was behind the scenes that Rob, the next show,

381. was gonna have me handcuffed and crucified,

382. basically, chained up like this with my arms out...

383. And he told Supreme that as payback

384. he had to hit me several times across the head,

385. unprotected with a chair.

386. And, I had no idea it was coming.

387. - Oh!

388. My goodness, you can hear the impact.

389. Luke's got nowhere to go, nowhere to go!

390. And, next thing you know, one shot turns to two.

391. Two shots turn to three.

392. Oh, my goodness!

393. Probably cracking my skull.

394. I didn't go to the doctor 'cause I didn't have

395. health insurance, but I have a really big indention

396. from those chair shots in my skull.

397. So, I remember they were like,

398. "You're very bad concussed.

399. You can't go to sleep. You gotta sit up."

400. And, sitting in the hotel room after just miserable.

401. My head's pounding, I'm throwing up.

402. I kind of have no idea where I'm at.

403. I'm wondering if I'm gonna die.

404. And this is all 'cause of some God damn idiot

405. who knows nothing about wrestling thinks I,

406. I needed to pay for putting my hand up on a chair shot.

407. With mounting injuries and a waning interest in

408. performing for blood thirty crowds,

409. XPW's top star is forced to reconsider

410. his future in the company.

411. I just went to Rob, I had the belt with me,

412. and I went, "I'm done." Like, "I'm done.

413. My body's beat up." He just looked at me,

414. and he went, "Okay, if you're done, I'm done."

415. I'm like, "Wait, what?" He goes,

416. "If you don't want to do this anymore,

417. I don't want to do this anymore.

418. It's that simple. I'm finished."

419. And I know he would never have stopped doing XPW

420. because I left.

421. I know that never would have happened.

422. Honestly, I got played.

423. That's what happened.

424. I remember talking to Lizzy about it and Lizzy,

425. essentially, said, "That's what he does."

426. Lizzy said, "He's done that to me too."

427. Even when it came to like Lizzy, Lizzy Borden and I,

428. Lizzy said, "Rob wants me to flirt with guys."

429. I was like, "Why?"

430. "I don't know, he just likes it," you know.

431. I think Rob liked having the hot girlfriend and...

482. Rumours of Lizzy Borden's affair

484. begins to circulate when he doesn't show

485. for an XPW event.

486. There was a house show we were gonna do

487. in our warehouse.

488. And, from what I understand,

489. Sabu showed up, and The Messiah didn't.

490. I didn't tell Supreme or Kaos or any of those guys

491. what was going on.

492. Those would have been the guys I would have told.

493. Ah, it just come out. Rob, Rob...

494. Rob found out.

495. And they go, it comes out like,

496. "Hey, yeah, he was... ing the boss' wife,"

497. and we were, our jaw dropped, like, really?

498. Why would he mess up this XPW thing, man?

499. Like, why would he do that?

500. Like..., like he... ed up.

501. I slept with Billy, too.

502. Yes! He, pfft...

503. They got around, all of 'em.

504. Rob Black and Lizzy Borden's relationship survives

505. the affair, but The Messiah is promptly exiled from XPW.

506. And so, The Messiah was written out of the company

507. through a bizarre story line that happened with

508. an apparition out in the warehouse.

509. Messiah, you can't go. I need you tonight.

510. Everything is on the line. What are you thinking?

512. The Messiah has come...

513. and gone gone... gone...

514. He went to heaven.

515. That was how they explained him to go away.

516. Another lame hit, you know, for the company.

517. This ain't funny. You gotta what...

518. I don't know what the I'm doing, man.

519. I had a conversation with Rob where he basically just

520. threatened me on the phone and essentially was like,

521. gave me a count down.

522. "Three days. You got three days to live."

523. You know, "This is what I'm gonna do for you, Billy.

524. I'm gonna buy you a plane ticket to Michigan and

525. you get out of California." "I'm not running."

526. That's the exact words I told him.

527. "I'm not running."

528. With the loss of one of XPW's biggest attractions,

529. Rob Black looks to stage his most ambitious

530. spectacle yet with a high stakes match between

531. New Jack and Vic Grimes.

532. Unbeknownst to Grimes, New Jack aims to retaliate

533. against him for a fractured skull he suffered in a

534. previous match two years earlier.

535. See, here I can get away with murder.

536. Murder. I mean real murder,

537. and that's what I'm getting ready to do.

538. Rob Black. He told me, he said,

539. "Jack, we're gonna do a scaffold match.

540. The loser gets thrown off. I'm gonna flip a coin."

541. I said, "Rob, you can flip a coin all day long.

542. Vic is getting thrown off the... ing scaffold."

543. I said, "I'm not taking that bump. Big is."

544. Alright, listen to me.

545. Changing stipulations a little bit, alright.

546. We need, we need, we need to spice this shit up.

547. The Free Fall event was a colossal undertaking,

548. to say the least.

549. Everyone was under the assuminption this scaffolding

550. was gonna be used for cameramen,

551. including the building.

552. If I had gone about the insurance the normal way

553. a lot of companies do,

554. it probably would have been pretty difficult.

555. So, to bypass a lot of that, I would just make up the

556. insurance waivers on my computer.

557. I remember finding an old insurance certificate that

558. they had used prior, and I scanned it and I whited out

559. some certain things and then I just typed up

560. who needed "coverage".

561. I faxed them the certificate that I made.

562. And I got a call saying, "Just got the insurance.

563. We're good to go on the show."

564. Yeah...

565. Look at this, Grimes! Grimes is starting!

566. And yes! Yes, they're both going up.

567. You know, and that damn thing looked rickety.

568. It's not meant to have two big guys up there

569. bumping and fighting.

570. I remember seeing the thing and

571. it's kind of shifting back forth.

572. And I'm just like, holy shit.

573. And the crowd would, "Oh! Oh..."

574. And I could see the scaffolding swaying.

575. What the hell is gonna happen?

576. And just watching everything going on,

577. just crossing my fingers.

578. Please, God! Please have mercy on their souls.

579. And I hear the crowd gasping,

580. and I look up and New Jack's got a stun gun.

581. - Oh, jeepers! - Oh, look at this!

582. I could not believe it. And I was just like,

583. it's gonna be over soon. It's gonna be over soon.

586. I'll never forget just like the look on Big's face

587. when he was just coming down.

588. And it just looked like pure terror.

589. It was really an intense moment,

590. but as he turned over,

591. his legs hit the ring ropes and

592. flipped him back into the ring.

593. If it had hit his butt,

594. he would have slid out onto the concrete.

595. His bitch ass would've hit the god damn floor and

596. splattered like a... ing egg.

597. That was a little... ing dangerous and a little like,

598. there is a God and he just saved his ass.

599. Vic Grimes is gonna need medical attention, please.

603. So, he paid me.

604. So, I did my last show, which was with Vic Grimes.

605. Once I got him, I felt like, mission accomplished.

608. With New Jack's departure,

610. To make matters worse, The Messiah

611. publicly admits to his affair with Lizzy Borden,

612. boasting about it at a show in southern California.

613. I was told by people at the Extreme Associates office

614. that Rob was keeping tabs on me,

615. that he knew and was aware of everything I was doing.

616. I then started getting very resentful.

618. I know in Rob's mind,

619. you weren't supposed to hear about me ever again.

620. In my mind, I'm stuffing it down Rob's throat.

621. And I was happy to do it.

623. The whole entire place started changing,

625. Me, being in my 23-year-old...

626. frame of mind...

629. It wasn't the most smartest thing I've ever done.

642. With The Messiah's outspoken bravado and

643. XPW's diminishing attendance...

644. Rob Black's frustration intensifies.

645. XPW had put on a show.

646. I purposely sit up in the nosebleed section.

647. The match wasn't, wasn't very good.

648. The crowd started throwing like around a beach ball,

649. and chanting, "beach ball".

650. You know, the beach ball would get snatched and,

651. you know, the crowd would go, "Oh!"

652. The crowd was not being receptive.

653. I guess Rob found out I was there.

654. And I was told he threw a temper tantrum backstage.

655. My phone rings, it's Dynamite D.

656. "Hey, you need to leave." "Why do I need to leave?"

657. "Rob is pissed off

658. and he's yelling at all of us because you're here."

659. I hung up the phone and we left.

660. I mean, we left. That was it.

661. I had just got home from work.

662. I just bought a Nintendo GameCube,

663. so I was gonna play some video games.

664. The front door opens, and these two guys walk in.

665. I immediately assume they were with my roommate,

666. so I didn't think anything of it. I even said,

667. "Hey, what's up?"

668. I could see the reflection off the TV of the two guys.

669. I see the one guy lock the door.

670. And then, I see both of them going,

671. "You get him. No, you get it."

672. And, I turn like this to then confront them

673. and then, boom, they just jumped on me.

674. One of them got me in a chokehold,

675. but I knew he didn't have it in right.

676. I get choked out all the time and I knew

677. what a choke hold felt like.

678. One of 'em got my hand down,

679. and the other one had clippers.

680. And...

681. Got it around my thumb and then snapped it and...

682. thumb popped right off.

683. Then they went to my other hand and I kept it in a fist.

684. So, they couldn't get it and they started pounding

685. on my hand to open up my fist.

686. And I wouldn't do it.

687. We had like a little fish tank.

688. They busted it over my head.

689. They were trying, I think, to knock me out.

690. I was able to get to the door...

691. without having my thumb, it was like I'm,

692. I was waving at the lock.

693. So, they got me, pulled me back in.

694. They just got on top of me and started, like, you know,

695. punching me in the face or punching me anywhere.

696. By this point, both of them are gassed out.

697. And tired.

698. One of 'em threw a punch at me.

699. I got him in an arm bar...

700. and just wrenched on it, and he screamed.

701. When he screamed, I let go.

702. Made it to the door and was able to unlock the door

703. at that point.

704. And the door just flew open and they both ran out.

705. Got a cup of ice.

706. And then began to try to search for my thumb.

707. But, it was hard to find anything and

708. I couldn't locate it.

709. And then I think I just passed out.

710. While The Messiah was fighting off home invaders,

711. his XPW colleagues were unaware his life

712. was in serious danger.

713. On this particular night, GQ Money and I

714. were gonna film a segment for XPW TV.

715. And, then all of a sudden, there's a knock on the door.

716. Open the door, it's Rob Black.

717. What the... is Rob Black doing here?

718. Like, Rob Black has never been here.

719. Like, why is he here?

720. And he was not the Rob Black that we knew.

721. He kind of just sat on the couch.

722. It was like, why are you here?

723. Why are you here? I had no clue.

724. I woke up the next morning. Billy said,

725. Two Black guys came into his house and there was a fight.

726. To this day, I don't know if they were after to kill him,

727. what they were after to do.

728. But a lot of us were just in shock, in awe.

729. And, you know, it's like...

730. and then the rumour started flying, the speculation.

731. I remember how I first saw it.

732. It was on America's Most Wanted.

733. And I remember I was sitting with my husband and I go,

734. "Holy shit, that's Messiah.

735. Oh, my God, they cut off his thumb.

736. What's going on? What's going on?"

737. But who would want The Messiah hurt, for real?

738. To answer that, cops have been delving into the

739. secretive and sometimes sleazy subculture

740. of indie wrestling.

741. I remember looking at my husband and going...

742. "..., we all know who did this.

743. It, we all know who's behind it.

744. But..., we can't do nothing."

745. And I can't prove it.

746. What's going? What's happening?

747. Is that true? Did Rob

748. Really, Rob Black had something to do with it?

750. And I actually asked Rob about it one day.

752. I was like, "Did you do that?" And he was like,

753. "Uh, no, Jack, I had nothing to do with that."

754. You know, there's speculation. I don't know who did it.

755. I know that Billy said it was two Black guys,

756. you know, that physically did it.

757. After this had happened, I remember Rob Black

758. saying, "Watch out who you hang out with.

759. You might get your arm chopped off."

760. What did that mean?

761. Be careful who you're hanging around with,

763. 'cause he was pissed that we were

764. still friends with Messiah. Oh, yeah, 100%.

767. I actually ended up leaving, I would say within

768. a couple of weeks to a month after that.

769. It wasn't fun when people were going,

770. "One thumb up," or trying to shake your hand and

771. going like that, instead of the normal.

772. And, you know, and laughing about it.

774. We all think Rob had something to do with it.

776. The biggest thing I could do...

778. was to go back doing what I love.

779. Which was wrestling. And that's what I did.

788. However, he and Lizzy begin to draw the attention of

789. federal authorities for posturing in the media about

790. pushing legal boundaries with their latest adult films.

791. A girl being kidnapped, being forced to have sex.

792. Being butchered at the end, and spit on.

793. She's being degraded.

794. We're known for all the taboo stuff that everyone

795. said you can't do, and we do it.

796. And we sell it, and people are entertained because

797. people are bored with the other stuff.

799. such extreme stuff.

800. And I wasn't into it and it wasn't where I wanted to go.

801. And, so I finally just said, you know,

802. "Hey, Rob, this is...

803. you know, this is where it ends."

804. I watch Night Line all the time.

805. And, just on random day...

806. Rob's a guest of Ted Coppel.

807. He was trying to justify the lewd acts that were in

808. these videos against freedom of speech.

809. And, John Ashcroft, the Attorney General of the

810. United States at that point, was coming after him.

811. We're not drug dealers or...

812. or murderers, you know, we make movies.

813. Rob always wanted to be like Hugh Hefner or Larry Flint.

815. Just like Hollywood makes movies.

818. In your movies, women are brutally raped.

819. They're actually beat up.

820. "I'm fighting for your first amendment rights."

821. And he wasn't. He was fighting for himself.

823. Attorney General Ashcroft," and said that Ashcroft,

824. quote, "could not do anything about his films."

825. And I'm at home, and I'm like...

826. "You're challenging John Ashcroft?

827. You're challenging the United States government?"

828. Like, why would you do that? Why would anyone do that?

829. There was a time when there was a meeting in Rob's office.

830. Rob stood up from his desk and said,

831. "Hey, when we get raided by the feds,

832. everyone report to Kevin. That's your

833. that's who's gonna get information,

834. that's who you need to speak to."

836. It wasn't "if" it was "when".

837. I remember the morning of the postal raid

838. at Extreme Associates.

839. We figured out what was going on because

840. everyone was wearing United States Postal Service,

841. kind of like the CIA or FBI jackets you see in

842. the movies and television.

843. And, we put two and two together and figured out that

844. the government somehow, some way

845. figured out how to get Rob.

846. How can you go on network television and

847. challenge the government? Like, who does that?

848. And he did. And he got popped for it.

849. They had to go after me first because

850. I had the biggest mouth.

851. You can't start a war on pornography unless you

856. I was really interested on where it was gonna go

865. The funny thing about my business is

874. There were times when there would just be a month of

877. And, literally, everyone with a cheque in their hand.

882. And, you can't produce movies.

883. You can't pay wrestlers, you can't pay actors,

884. you can't pay actresses.

885. I think he ultimately thought that the

886. adult industry would, you know, come to his support.

887. And they saw through his BS.

888. He should have known it then,

889. but he definitely knows it now.

890. Dude, the government, they got more money,

891. they got more lawyers, and they got more time.

892. These charges were getting dropped,

893. and dropped, and dropped, and one finally stuck.

894. Unable to mount a costly defence,

895. Rob and Lizzy opt to plead guilty to a single charge of

896. conspiracy to distribute obscene materials.

897. I believe he got a year and a day,

898. if I'm not mistaken.

899. I remember when I heard that Rob and Lizzy

900. were thrown in jail.

901. I kind of feel bad for Lizzy 'cause it's like, you know,

902. she wasn't the most innocent sweet thing in the world either,

903. but I think she went down just because

904. her name was on the title.

905. I thought he got what he deserved,

906. not because of what happened to me,

907. but to go on TV and ask the government,

908. "Yeah, yeah, come. Come at me. Do it."

909. Just the ego, the absolute ego.

910. After serving his time,

911. Rob Black leaves the world of wrestling behind

912. and his relationship with Lizzy would also

913. come to an end.

914. You know, I've asked myself over the years,

915. it's been almost 20 years, and I've asked myself:

916. If I could do it again, would I?

919. Every part of it. Even the bad times, I would.

920. Yes! Of course I'd go back.

921. 'Cause we had something incredibly special there.

922. I mean, it wasn't just the wrestlers,

923. and it wasn't just Rob Black.

924. It was a combination of everything that made the magic.

925. Everybody wanted the show to succeed.

926. Now I'm in Hollywood. Now I'm living my dream,

927. and I have the greatest job in the world and...

928. that might not have happened if I wasn't in XPW.

929. That time is incredibly important to me.

930. All of the situations that, you know, involved,

931. and the friendships that are still happening to this day.

932. Me and Sylvia, we actually got married at

933. a pro wrestling show.

934. We're actually celebrating our 9-year anniversary next week.

935. We are like peanut butterand jelly.

936. We just love wrestling and that's all we do.

937. So, my uncle, Supreme,

938. the people just really loved him.

939. You know, unfortunately, he passed away last May 6th.

940. There's just a lot of like love,

941. when he passed away, just a lot of love that...

942. that people just messaging and just talking about him,

943. and just I know it really touched me,

944. but I just so wish, like...!

945. I just so wish that like people would have let him

946. know when he was alive because he loved that shit.

948. I'd have never been a wrestler, whatsoever.

949. I don't know what I'd be doing.

953. all of that led me to my wife, and now I have my two daughters.

954. So, it was all worth it in my eyes.

955. Because at the end of the day,

957. Once I get walk through that door at home,

958. I'm just dad and husband.

959. And, that's the most important thing to me.

960. What we're doing right now will put XPW back on the map

961. for a few months.

962. But, it ain't nothing that they did to be like,

963. "Oh, they're gonna go down in history," besides me

964. throwing Vic Grimes off that... ing scaffold.

965. As far as I know, Rob is happily married.

966. He has a couple kids and, I think he's running

967. a hamburger shop... back east somewhere.

968. I'm not quite sure where. But I always wonder, like,

969. does would he want if he could come back, would he?

970. And I, I don't know.

971. I have no idea who the Rob Black is now,

972. or who Robert Zicari is nowadays.

973. 'Cause I wonder, is he still Rob Black?
