1. You ain't true to no crew!
This is my crew.
Copy !req
2. I'm true to the crew.
Copy !req
3. You're gonna go down, you punk!
Copy !req
4. Just like Macho Man,
you punk scab, rah!
Copy !req
5. Wrestler Johnny K-9
was a complex man.
Copy !req
6. In the ring, he played
a vicious heel.
Copy !req
7. To his fellow wrestlers
in the locker room,
Copy !req
8. he was a big-hearted teddy bear.
Copy !req
9. But away from the ring,
he led a life of violence and
Copy !req
10. mayhem that was shockingly real.
Copy !req
11. I tried to give him advice
about not being in crime,
Copy !req
12. to take full advantage
of the wrestling.
Copy !req
13. He wouldn't listen.
Copy !req
14. He could be laughing so hard
that you think he's gonna
Copy !req
15. pass out, and the
next thing you know,
Copy !req
16. he might have somebody
by the throat and
Copy !req
17. you're thinking, okay,
I'm about to witness like
Copy !req
18. a pretty heinous crime here.
Copy !req
19. He fed an insatiable appetite
for power and infamy
Copy !req
20. as a high-ranking member of the
Satan's Choice biker gang.
Copy !req
21. Johnny was very power hungry.
Copy !req
22. He wanted to rise to the
top as quickly as he can.
Copy !req
23. Johnny K-9 is out on bail in
connection with charges
Copy !req
24. he's facing thanks to
the bombing of the
Copy !req
25. Sudbury Police Station.
Copy !req
26. You're reading the newspaper
article and it's like,
Copy !req
27. "Ah, yeah, that's Bruiser.
That's my guy."
Copy !req
28. And they're like,
"Yeah, well, apparently
Copy !req
29. he blew up a police station
in Sudbury, Ontario."
Copy !req
30. It's just like... what?
Copy !req
31. Double assassinations and
blowing up police stations,
Copy !req
32. like, really?
Copy !req
33. I just couldn't bring myself
to think that he's a
Copy !req
34. bad person that deserves to
be punished for anything.
Copy !req
35. That's what blows
everybody's mind.
Copy !req
36. Both sides of his dual life
would ultimately implode,
Copy !req
37. leaving a defeated and
broken man in the wake.
Copy !req
38. He ... ed up.
Copy !req
39. He ... ed up big time.
Copy !req
40. On the offensive.
Oh, turned around,
Copy !req
41. ducked underneath
that one, look out.
Copy !req
42. - Ah!
- Oh!
Copy !req
43. If you were a star in the
WWF in the mid to late 80s,
Copy !req
44. chances are you probably
beat Johnny K-9
Copy !req
45. somewhere along the way.
Copy !req
46. K-9 down!
This one is over.
Copy !req
47. I remember seeing him as
kind of a job guy on...
Copy !req
48. WWF TV, probably,
in '85, '86, '87.
Copy !req
49. So long, Johnny.
Copy !req
50. Johnny K-9 was one
of those, you know,
Copy !req
51. look, the term
offends some people.
Copy !req
52. It doesn't offend me
'cause I used to do it,
Copy !req
53. is jobbers, right.
Copy !req
54. They're the guys that lose
on television to the stars.
Copy !req
55. Hacksaw made quick
work of Johnny K-9.
Copy !req
56. Television was the opportunity
to get the stars over.
Copy !req
57. So, the big-name stars -
the Hulk Hogan's,
Copy !req
58. the Randy Savage's -
have to beat somebody.
Copy !req
59. WWF would hire local people
at all the TV tapings and
Copy !req
60. they would come in and you
would be the guy
Copy !req
61. that gets beat, the job.
Copy !req
62. You're not under contract so,
Copy !req
63. you got labeled as a jobber.
Copy !req
64. Young John K-9,
something lacking.
Copy !req
65. He's like caught in The
Twilight Zone or something.
Copy !req
66. If you were a wrestling fan
watching WWF,
Copy !req
67. you knew who Johnny K-9 was.
Copy !req
68. You knew he was gonna drop
to his knees and do that X.
Copy !req
69. What is that thing he
does before each match?
Copy !req
70. - Crosses his arms?
- You got me.
Copy !req
71. - Significant of something.
- You got me.
Copy !req
72. He loved wrestling,
and was known for that.
Copy !req
73. But locally, he was also
known as this tough kid
Copy !req
74. who'd grown up on the
wrong side of the law.
Copy !req
75. He made money, legally.
Copy !req
76. And then he dipped
his foot in crime so,
Copy !req
77. there was this balance of...
Copy !req
78. you know, legal and
illegal activities.
Copy !req
79. This is Johnny K-9.
Copy !req
80. Is there a reason for that name?
Copy !req
81. It's a long story.
I used to work at a bar.
Copy !req
82. One time I got arrested.
I had a assault police charge.
Copy !req
83. And, they threw me in
the back of a paddy wagon,
Copy !req
84. and I was looking, I saw
a dog car come up,
Copy !req
85. and I seen K-9. I go,
that's the name
Copy !req
86. I'm gonna use when I go in the
ring 'cause I'm a dog.
Copy !req
87. I know he had been
to jail and prison.
Copy !req
88. 'Cause, when I met him,
he had just been released.
Copy !req
89. My name is Tracy Edwards and
I was married to Johnny K-9.
Copy !req
90. I met him in 1993 in
Hamilton, Ontario.
Copy !req
91. I was an exotic dancer,
doing a rollerblading show.
Copy !req
92. And, the thing with Johnny was,
Copy !req
93. when he walked into a bar,
the whole establishment
Copy !req
94. stopped what they were doing.
Copy !req
95. And that blew me away.
I was onstage and
Copy !req
96. I could just see the way
the whole bar changed.
Copy !req
97. And I looked over and,
he just looked at me.
Copy !req
98. And I was like, whoa.
Copy !req
99. And, that was it.
Copy !req
100. From the moment I
looked at him...
Copy !req
101. I knew we would be together.
Copy !req
102. Weighing 242 pounds...
Copy !req
103. After gigs dry up for Johnny
at regional WWF TV tapings,
Copy !req
104. he pursues stardom on
Copy !req
105. the independent
wrestling circuit.
Copy !req
106. K-9 follows it with an elbow.
Copy !req
107. I first met Johnny K-9,
it was in Chatham, Ontario.
Copy !req
108. It was a show for
an older wrestler
Copy !req
109. by the name of Ricky Bolton.
Copy !req
110. I'm Scott D'Amore,
Executive Vice President
Copy !req
111. for Impact Wrestling,
and I was a long time
Copy !req
112. professional wrestler and
friend of Johnny K-9's.
Copy !req
113. I saw it on the card that
was posted outside in the
Copy !req
114. hallway that I was wrestling...
At that point he was,
Copy !req
115. he was K-9 Dog of War.
Copy !req
116. But I knew he was Johnny K-9.
Copy !req
117. And I hadn't seen him since his,
Copy !req
118. his WWF days.
Copy !req
119. And then I walked into
the locker room and,
Copy !req
120. I see, I'll call it the new,
improved Johnny K-9, right.
Copy !req
121. This isn't the 220 pound
Johnny K-9.
Copy !req
122. This guy is muscle
on top of muscle.
Copy !req
123. He's not that lean
bodybuilder muscle,
Copy !req
124. he's that big, thick,
like I'm gonna
Copy !req
125. cave somebody's skull in muscle.
Copy !req
126. And he had the Fu Manchu.
He had the tassel of hair.
Copy !req
127. And he's got, like,
the gym shorts and
Copy !req
128. he's got the flip flops.
Copy !req
129. And he was just
sitting back and he's like,
Copy !req
130. "Hey, kid, yeah,
it's me and you tonight.
Copy !req
131. Yeah, me and you.
But it'll be good."
Copy !req
132. And I mean, I just about
shit my pants right there.
Copy !req
133. And, we had a good match,
and that's what led to me
Copy !req
134. getting booked all the
time in the US with him.
Copy !req
135. Johnny in the ring, to me,
Copy !req
136. was just unbelievable to watch.
Copy !req
137. He'd get in the ring
and start swinging
Copy !req
138. his head around,
doing this thing.
Copy !req
139. And the eyes would
be bulged out and,
Copy !req
140. he'd be screaming at everybody.
Copy !req
141. You're all scabs!
Copy !req
142. Really coming across like scary.
Copy !req
143. Johnny K-9 was one of the
toughest guys out there.
Copy !req
144. He told the guys
all the time, "Hit me.
Copy !req
145. I don't care.
I want blood."
Copy !req
146. Oh!
Copy !req
147. "If there's no ing blood,
Copy !req
148. then we're doing it again.
You gotta get blood."
Copy !req
149. Come and fight a real man!
Copy !req
150. He always wanted to be
tougher than everyone
Copy !req
151. around him, because of
his childhood.
Copy !req
152. He grew up in a
very abusive home.
Copy !req
153. At Christmas time, his dad
would get so drunk and
Copy !req
154. beat his mother and the kids.
Copy !req
155. He would chase them
around with a broom.
Copy !req
156. He...
Copy !req
157. was 5 years old and
he was so scared.
Copy !req
158. And he would climb his
little body under the steel
Copy !req
159. bed frame and hold on with
his little fingers and his feet,
Copy !req
160. so when his dad went with
the broom under the bed,
Copy !req
161. he couldn't get his little body.
Copy !req
162. Johnny's traumatic
upbringing would eventually
Copy !req
163. fuel his tough guy persona
in and out of the ring.
Copy !req
164. You never quite knew when
that switch was gonna go off.
Copy !req
165. One time, me and him
were at a show in Ohio.
Copy !req
166. We wrestled each other and,
when you're young,
Copy !req
167. you're always scared to
check your envelope 'cause
Copy !req
168. back then, you always
got paid in cash.
Copy !req
169. I didn't want to disrespect
the promoter by
Copy !req
170. checking the money
in front of him.
Copy !req
171. So, you just go, "Oh, thank you.
Copy !req
172. Thank you so much."
Well, I get in the truck,
Copy !req
173. I look at my envelope
and I'm like, ah...
Copy !req
174. And K-9's, "What's wrong?"
I'm like, "Nah, nothing."
Copy !req
175. He's like, "Did he short you?"
And I go, "Yeah."
Copy !req
176. I no longer get the words
out of my mouth and he's gone.
Copy !req
177. And for a 300-pound man,
he's moving.
Copy !req
178. And I'm chasing after him
'cause I don't know
Copy !req
179. what he's gonna do.
Copy !req
180. By the time I catch up to him
getting in the locker room,
Copy !req
181. he has the promoter
by the throat,
Copy !req
182. and he's holding him
against the wall.
Copy !req
183. The guy has gotta be
18 inches off the ground.
Copy !req
184. And it's gritted teeth,
"You're gonna short this kid
Copy !req
185. after he got in the ring
and wrestled me!
Copy !req
186. You want to get in the
ing ring and
Copy !req
187. you wanna take ... ing
shots from me, hah, punk?
Copy !req
188. You give that
ing kid his money."
Copy !req
189. And I'm sitting there
going, oh, my god,
Copy !req
190. like, we're gonna get arrested.
Copy !req
191. We're in another country.
Copy !req
192. He scared the hell
out of that promoter.
Copy !req
193. When he let him go,
he dropped to his knees,
Copy !req
194. gasping for air.
Copy !req
195. And this guy's just
throwing money at me.
Copy !req
196. We get in the truck and
K-9's got that big smile
Copy !req
197. on his face and he's
feeling good about himself,
Copy !req
198. and he goes, "Kid, I don't
think that guy's gonna
Copy !req
199. short you on money again."
Copy !req
200. And I'm like,
"No, no, but Johnny,
Copy !req
201. I'm also pretty sure that guy's
never gonna book us again."
Copy !req
202. And sure enough, he never did.
Copy !req
203. This is a really big,
tough-looking guy,
Copy !req
204. and a lot of people feared him.
Copy !req
205. But to me, he was a
gentle soul, you know.
Copy !req
206. He was like this
standup comedian type guy.
Copy !req
207. Like, he just always
made me laugh.
Copy !req
208. He would order a pizza,
and answer the door naked.
Copy !req
209. I'm like, what?
Copy !req
210. Put on some
underwear or something.
Copy !req
211. "No, no, no, watch this."
Copy !req
212. The door would
open and 300-pounds,
Copy !req
213. rock solid muscle,
completely naked.
Copy !req
214. And the pizza guy would be like,
Copy !req
215. "Um, yeah, that'll be $20,
please, sir."
Copy !req
216. And I would laugh so hard.
Copy !req
217. He was so funny.
Copy !req
218. I think Johnny K-9 needed to
be the center of attention
Copy !req
219. in some ways, and he
loved all eyes on him.
Copy !req
220. Whatever he had to do
to make the boys laugh.
Copy !req
221. There's this place
in Taylor, Michigan
Copy !req
222. where we used to
wrestle for MTW.
Copy !req
223. Midwest Territorial Wrestling,
Copy !req
224. and we have one hell
of a card here tonight.
Copy !req
225. There was a band that was
gonna play before the show.
Copy !req
226. K-9 walks up and,
of course, he's like,
Copy !req
227. "Hey, buddy, you mind
if I play the drums?"
Copy !req
228. So, he gets on there.
Copy !req
229. We do not believe he can
play the drums at all.
Copy !req
230. He starts actually
playing the drums and he's,
Copy !req
231. he's not half bad.
Copy !req
232. And he's just loving it 'cause
everybody's eating it up.
Copy !req
233. Then he gets on the
microphone and
Copy !req
234. starts singing,
and of all his skills,
Copy !req
235. singing is not one of them.
Copy !req
236. Wrestlers are falling off
of chairs laughing so hard.
Copy !req
237. And the more we
laugh and put it over,
Copy !req
238. the more he's gonna do it.
Copy !req
239. I can sing some shit.
Copy !req
240. And, that's actually the,
the territory or the company
Copy !req
241. where we were wrestling
the night that
Copy !req
242. Jim Cornette discovered K-9.
Copy !req
243. I'm Jim Cornette. I've been
a promoter, matchmaker,
Copy !req
244. announcer, manager in
professional wrestling for
Copy !req
245. 40 years, and I was the
promoter and matchmaker
Copy !req
246. for Smoky Mountain Wrestling.
Copy !req
247. Smoky Mountain Wrestling
was one of the last of the
Copy !req
248. pro wrestling territories
in the United States.
Copy !req
249. It was started specifically
to be an old-time territory
Copy !req
250. with southern wrestling feel.
Copy !req
251. And to do that, we not only
needed established wrestlers
Copy !req
252. that the people knew,
that were stars to them,
Copy !req
253. but we also needed to
constantly find new names,
Copy !req
254. new wrestlers, new ways
to make matches.
Copy !req
255. The team that I was managing,
Copy !req
256. the Heavenly Bodies and I,
Copy !req
257. were booked on an
event in Michigan.
Copy !req
258. When we got there and saw
the guys in the locker room,
Copy !req
259. I saw this big,
bald-headed, jacked up guy.
Copy !req
260. He looked like a turn of the
century carnival strongman.
Copy !req
261. He had a big,
round head. Bald.
Copy !req
262. These big bulging eyes that,
he could make that face.
Copy !req
263. He had this giant tattoo
across his stomach,
Copy !req
264. "True To The Crew".
Copy !req
265. I said, "There's gotta be
some way that we can bring
Copy !req
266. this guy to Tennessee where
they've never seen him before
Copy !req
267. and make a believable
animal out of him.
Copy !req
268. We need a heel.
We need a badass."
Copy !req
269. I sat down and talked to him
in the locker room that night.
Copy !req
270. I said, "Would you be
interested in coming to
Copy !req
271. Tennessee and working for me,
Copy !req
272. 3, 4 days a week if we can
come to some agreement?"
Copy !req
273. He said, "Yeah, Jimmy!
I'm all over it!"
Copy !req
274. We asked him one time
in the locker room,
Copy !req
275. the tattoo, True To The Crew.
Copy !req
276. He said, "Oh, guys,
I was in jail one time,
Copy !req
277. and all of the guys in jail,
we decided we were gonna
Copy !req
278. get that tattoo
when we got out."
Copy !req
279. And I said, "Well,
once you got out of jail,
Copy !req
280. you know, is anybody
gonna check?"
Copy !req
281. "No, Jimmy,
you don't understand.
Copy !req
282. These guys, you say
you're gonna do something,
Copy !req
283. you do it."
Copy !req
284. That was the first time
that I got an inkling that
Copy !req
285. Bruiser had a checkered past.
Copy !req
286. I don't know if Bruiser
chose a life of crime or
Copy !req
287. if the life of crime
just chose him.
Copy !req
288. After a fortuitous encounter
backstage with Johnny K-9,
Copy !req
289. promoter Jim Cornette
prepares for Johnny's
Copy !req
290. arrival at Smoky
Mountain Wrestling,
Copy !req
291. in Tennessee.
Copy !req
292. I didn't think that
Johnny K-9 was
Copy !req
293. a great wrestling name.
Copy !req
294. I thought, what can
you call this guy?
Copy !req
295. Well, Dick the Bruiser was
one of the most famous
Copy !req
296. major box office
attractions in wrestling.
Copy !req
297. When his promotion
was in its dying days,
Copy !req
298. had a television show
called Bruiser Bedlam.
Copy !req
299. Jim rebranded a lot of guys.
Copy !req
300. It's like The Thrill Seekers,
Copy !req
301. Jericho and I had
wrestled as Sudden Impact.
Copy !req
302. But, to him I think
The Thrill Seekers would
Copy !req
303. resonate better
with his audience.
Copy !req
304. We're gonna rock America.
Copy !req
305. I'm Lance Storm.
Copy !req
306. Spent time in Smoky
Mountain Wrestling in '94.
Copy !req
307. Lance Storm and Chris Jericho,
Copy !req
308. The Thrill Seekers!
Copy !req
309. And the moves you're seeing now,
Copy !req
310. you don't see many American
wrestlers making these moves.
Copy !req
311. These are international moves.
Copy !req
312. Cornette's like, "Oh, I'm
bringing this new guy in,"
Copy !req
313. and it was Bruiser Bedlam.
Copy !req
314. And, everybody's going,
"Who's that?"
Copy !req
315. "Oh, he used to
be Johnny K-9."
Copy !req
316. I'm like, "Okay..."
Copy !req
317. I remember, he was on his
way down to the States.
Copy !req
318. It was a really cold day and
Copy !req
319. he was driving a
jeep at the time.
Copy !req
320. He had his tank top on
with no coat.
Copy !req
321. I go, "What are you doing?"
He says, "Don't worry.
Copy !req
322. It's gonna be so
hot so ... in' fast,
Copy !req
323. I don't give a shit."
Copy !req
324. And he would pull up that
hill in that open-air jeep,
Copy !req
325. no matter how cold it was.
Copy !req
326. Wearing the most
minimal of shirts.
Copy !req
327. Maybe like a
string gym tank top.
Copy !req
328. And he's this gigantic
dude in the tank top,
Copy !req
329. shorts, and flip flops.
Copy !req
330. You're just like, oh,
my god, who is this guy?
Copy !req
331. You know, is he gonna be
a crazed maniac or what?
Copy !req
332. But, 10 seconds of meeting him,
Copy !req
333. he's just like, "Hey,
buddy, how you doing?"
Copy !req
334. And it's like, "Hey!"
Copy !req
335. And, you know,
his demeanour was,
Copy !req
336. you know, just big teddy bear.
Copy !req
337. To cement Bruiser Bedlam
as his new monster heel,
Copy !req
338. Cornette books him in a
main event match against the
Copy !req
339. promotion's top babyface,
Bullet Bob Armstrong.
Copy !req
340. His first night in, we had
a handicap match against
Copy !req
341. Bullet Bob Armstrong,
who was the all-time legend
Copy !req
342. in wrestling of that area.
Copy !req
343. And Bruiser beat him.
Copy !req
344. The cover, 1, 2, 3!
Copy !req
345. And people were like,
"He beat Bob Armstrong?"
Copy !req
346. Nobody beat Bob Armstrong.
Copy !req
347. That instantly gave him a little
credibility in their eyes.
Copy !req
348. We did videos with him
where he could drive a
Copy !req
349. 10-penny nail through a board
with his bare hand.
Copy !req
350. One time, he said,
Copy !req
351. "Jimmy, I can break a beer
bottle over my head."
Copy !req
352. "Okay." So, we got
the camera rolling,
Copy !req
353. he's got the bottle
in his hand, and he's...
Copy !req
354. Bam!
Copy !req
355. It didn't break.
Copy !req
356. I'm like, "Bruiser, you
know we can gimmick that."
Copy !req
357. "No, I, I can do it."
Second take, bam!
Copy !req
358. Now the knot's coming up
on his head. "I got it."
Copy !req
359. Bam!
Now he's bleeding.
Copy !req
360. I took the bottle and baked it,
Copy !req
361. put it in some cold water,
let it crack a little bit.
Copy !req
362. And handed it to him,
said, "Now break it."
Copy !req
363. Yah, yah!
Copy !req
364. This is what I'm about!
Copy !req
365. You got a guy
bleeding on television,
Copy !req
366. screaming,
"I'm gonna kill you."
Copy !req
367. I believed him.
Copy !req
368. I don't know.
Copy !req
369. Johnny K-9 grew up in a
rough neighbourhood
Copy !req
370. where criminality was
another option.
Copy !req
371. My name is Bill Dunphy.
Copy !req
372. I am a now retired crime
and justice journalist.
Copy !req
373. Hamilton was an
industrial powerhouse.
Copy !req
374. And in the 70s and 80s,
that has really declined,
Copy !req
375. so the opportunities for
someone of Johnny's age
Copy !req
376. were very different than
they were 10 years,
Copy !req
377. 15 years earlier.
Copy !req
378. Johnny grew up borderline poor,
Copy !req
379. barely making it.
Copy !req
380. So, the wrestling, you know,
he made a bit of money,
Copy !req
381. but not near as
much as he wanted.
Copy !req
382. So, that's why he
worked for a family,
Copy !req
383. I'm not gonna say the name.
Copy !req
384. The Gravelle family,
Copy !req
385. which was a big
family in Hamilton.
Copy !req
386. My name's Len Isnor.
I was a Detective
Copy !req
387. Staff Sergeant with the
Ontario Provincial Police.
Copy !req
388. He had acquaintances
among all the
Copy !req
389. traditional organized
crime families.
Copy !req
390. People who had debts would
give a percentage of the debt
Copy !req
391. to somebody like Johnny
K-9 and he would take
Copy !req
392. a profit off and he
would collect the money.
Copy !req
393. And it was a lot easier
for Johnny to do it because
Copy !req
394. basically of his appearance.
Copy !req
395. A few times he'd come home
with blood on his shoes,
Copy !req
396. wash his hands.
Copy !req
397. And that was one of the
ways he made his cash.
Copy !req
398. Despite his success as
a low-level enforcer,
Copy !req
399. Johnny has even bigger
dreams for his life of crime.
Copy !req
400. He told me his oldest brother
was with the Red Devils.
Copy !req
401. And he would always remember
stories of when he was a kid
Copy !req
402. and his brother and all his
bros would pull up on
Copy !req
403. their Harley's and pull
into the driveway.
Copy !req
404. And, he always wanted
to be with a bike gang.
Copy !req
405. And that's what happened.
Copy !req
406. He started hanging out
with Satan's Choice.
Copy !req
407. Johnny rapidly integrates
himself into the world of
Copy !req
408. outlaw biker gangs when he joins
Copy !req
409. one of Canada's most
notorious groups,
Copy !req
410. the Satan's Choice
Motorcycle Club.
Copy !req
411. I guess they proposed the
offer of him opening up a
Copy !req
412. chapter in Hamilton and
he jumped right on it.
Copy !req
413. Johnny was right away
elected as the president and
Copy !req
414. he ran the show there.
Copy !req
415. Mark Carlos is my name.
Copy !req
416. I knew Johnny from Satan's
Choice Motorcycle Club.
Copy !req
417. Nobody that I know of
ever came up that fast.
Copy !req
418. Even though I didn't like it,
personally, I understood.
Copy !req
419. Because if, if you wanted
to look at the big picture,
Copy !req
420. the big picture's money.
Copy !req
421. When people hear,
in that drug crime world,
Copy !req
422. you got Johnny K-9
backing you...
Copy !req
423. You make more money.
Copy !req
424. People are in' scared, right.
Copy !req
425. So, it was easy
for him to make 20,
Copy !req
426. 30 grand in a matter of
20 ... in' minutes, no joke.
Copy !req
427. Well, Johnny had heat
written all over him.
Copy !req
428. You know, extorting bars
and restaurants
Copy !req
429. in your home town.
The cops are called.
Copy !req
430. It was decided that some
attention has to go
Copy !req
431. on this new chapter.
Copy !req
432. So, I was assigned to Hamilton.
Copy !req
433. And, the Johnny
K-9 investigation.
Copy !req
434. He was making a lot of money
illegally at that point,
Copy !req
435. but he loved wrestling.
Copy !req
436. He'd go and
wrestle for 200 bucks.
Copy !req
437. Johnny's two-sided lifestyle
was never more evident than
Copy !req
438. we when he left behind his
biker gang duties to
Copy !req
439. wrestle down south for
Smoky Mountain.
Copy !req
440. It was there that he would
find himself crashing
Copy !req
441. at a famous flophouse.
Copy !req
442. Yeah, the famed or
I guess infamous, more,
Copy !req
443. the Smoky Mountain flophouse.
Copy !req
444. There'd be 4 or 5 of 'em
living there at any one time.
Copy !req
445. Chris Jericho was
flopping there for a while.
Copy !req
446. Some of the other guys
that were just
Copy !req
447. starting out in wrestling.
Copy !req
448. And then, suddenly, whenever
Bruiser was in town,
Copy !req
449. he just decided to live at...
Copy !req
450. my house.
Copy !req
451. He goes, "Hey, buddy,
if I'm gonna live here,
Copy !req
452. I'm gonna do my share,
hey, buddy."
Copy !req
453. So, in his mind, his share
was washing the dishes.
Copy !req
454. I went into the cupboard
to grab a plate and
Copy !req
455. I pulled a plate out,
there's all these,
Copy !req
456. like, pieces of food
kind of crusted on and...
Copy !req
457. I watch the next time
Bruiser does the dishes,
Copy !req
458. and Bruiser's idea of doing
the dishes was just
Copy !req
459. holding the dish
underneath the water,
Copy !req
460. and then, going like
this and putting it back.
Copy !req
461. The dish is clean.
So, the next time he went,
Copy !req
462. "Hey, buddy, I'll do..."
"Dude, it's fine.
Copy !req
463. It's fine, you know, you're
the guest in the house.
Copy !req
464. You want to do your part,
take the garage out,"
Copy !req
465. or whatever, you know.
He was a good roommate
Copy !req
466. as far as someone
to hang out with.
Copy !req
467. As far as contributing anything
to the living situation,
Copy !req
468. absolutely not.
But, as a person,
Copy !req
469. he was always a lot of fun.
Copy !req
470. The first month or so in
Smoky Mountain Wrestling,
Copy !req
471. we basically put Bruiser in
with all of the guys that
Copy !req
472. understood what to do
to get a monster over.
Copy !req
473. We were having a big event at
Copy !req
474. the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.
Copy !req
475. Jake "The Snake" Roberts
was in one main event.
Copy !req
476. The other one was gonna be
Bruiser Bedlam versus
Copy !req
477. Randy "Macho Man" Savage.
Copy !req
478. Bruiser Bedlam, you gotta
understand that these are
Copy !req
479. glory days for Smoky
Mountain Wrestling.
Copy !req
480. Randy sat down with me, said,
Copy !req
481. "This is your guy, right?
Copy !req
482. He's gonna be here,
I'm just coming in one time.
Copy !req
483. Let me put him over."
Copy !req
484. Randy "Macho Man" Savage,
Copy !req
485. one of the biggest stars
in wrestling...
Copy !req
486. Doing me a favour to come
down and appear on my show,
Copy !req
487. and now, he wants to
lose to my new top heel.
Copy !req
488. I tried to interfere...
Copy !req
489. Down goes Cornette!
Copy !req
490. Other people got involved.
Copy !req
491. But Bruiser Bedlam
pinned Randy Savage.
Copy !req
492. 1, 2, 3.
Copy !req
493. Bruiser Bedlam nails Macho Man!
Copy !req
494. That was, in a lot
of ways to Johnny,
Copy !req
495. like here I am.
Copy !req
496. I'm not, I'm not
that job guy anymore.
Copy !req
497. You're gonna go down, you punk.
Copy !req
498. Just like Macho Man!
You punk scab, pah!
Copy !req
499. That was his biggest match
of his entire career and,
Copy !req
500. I think he did a very good
job with what he was given
Copy !req
501. to work with for that period of
time he was in Smoky Mountain.
Copy !req
502. By Thanksgiving, Christmas time,
Copy !req
503. we had to change
talent over again.
Copy !req
504. I couldn't find a spot for him.
Copy !req
505. He took it well, he said,
"Hey, Jimmy, no worries.
Copy !req
506. Hey, I've had a great time."
Copy !req
507. And he went back to Hamilton.
Copy !req
508. There was not one single
issue that I can recall,
Copy !req
509. in 9 months, of having
Bruiser Bedlam in my
Copy !req
510. locker rooms or at the
Smoky Mountain flophouse.
Copy !req
511. Send you mother...
Copy !req
512. I would almost have to see
videotape of him actually
Copy !req
513. blowing something up
before I could believe it.
Copy !req
514. After Smoky Mountain Wrestling,
Copy !req
515. he was doing smaller shows.
Copy !req
516. I'm the man down in this area!
Copy !req
517. I beat them all!
Copy !req
518. I'm gonna beat ya!
Copy !req
519. He just wasn't happy,
the shows were smaller.
Copy !req
520. Tell the fans to
take their seats...
Copy !req
521. All...
Copy !req
522. please try to
remain in your seats.
Copy !req
523. His heart was truly broken.
Copy !req
524. All he wanted to do
was make it, you know.
Copy !req
525. Maybe he was
hoping that, you know,
Copy !req
526. a bigger break in wrestling
would completely
Copy !req
527. remove him from that other life.
Copy !req
528. Or again, that could be
me trying to
Copy !req
529. make him the person
I want him to be.
Copy !req
530. He probably would have
made a great wrestling guy,
Copy !req
531. like that Hulk Hogan fella and
stuff like that, right.
Copy !req
532. He was a showman.
Copy !req
533. He loved the attention.
Copy !req
534. But, he went
down the wrong path.
Copy !req
535. This life isn't for somebody
looking to make it big.
Copy !req
536. As, as a biker, it's not good.
Copy !req
537. So, we'll sit in
front of the clubhouse,
Copy !req
538. you know, monitoring
who's coming, who's going,
Copy !req
539. who's associating
with who, so on, so forth.
Copy !req
540. And, Johnny will
come out sometimes and,
Copy !req
541. and he'll say, "What
are you guys up to?
Copy !req
542. Wasting the tax
payers' dollars."
Copy !req
543. You don't talk to the cops.
Copy !req
544. What is the reason,
you know, other than...
Copy !req
545. thinking you're
more intelligent,
Copy !req
546. thinking that
you're untouchable.
Copy !req
547. I don't know. But, it's...
Copy !req
548. it's not good.
Copy !req
549. We'd get information from him
without him really knowing.
Copy !req
550. Like, his bike's in the shop,
Copy !req
551. he has to go get his bike later.
Copy !req
552. So, you know, little pieces
of intelligence
Copy !req
553. that always was handy.
Copy !req
554. Along with constant
visual surveillance,
Copy !req
555. Detective Staff Sergeant
Len Isnor and his team
Copy !req
556. utilize wire taps to
monitor the activities
Copy !req
557. of Johnny and his gang.
Copy !req
558. We noticed early in our
investigation that there was
Copy !req
559. a relationship between the
Hamilton Satan's Choice
Copy !req
560. and the Sudbury.
Copy !req
561. They seemed to hang out more.
Copy !req
562. Johnny K-9 formed a
relationship with a member
Copy !req
563. of the Sudbury chapter by
the name of Michael Dube.
Copy !req
564. Michael Dube was probably
Copy !req
565. the most dangerous biker
that I've ever met.
Copy !req
566. On one particular night,
they decided,
Copy !req
567. let's go to The Solid Gold.
Copy !req
568. And, The Solid Gold was a...
Copy !req
569. adult entertainment... place.
Copy !req
570. All the Sudbury members
fold up their colours and
Copy !req
571. they put them in
their saddlebags.
Copy !req
572. And, Johnny K-9 says,
"What are you guys doing?"
Copy !req
573. He says, "Well, you can't wear
colours in The Solid Gold.
Copy !req
574. It says no colours."
Copy !req
575. Johnny said, "Hell with that.
Copy !req
576. We're gonna wear
our colours in here."
Copy !req
577. He went from,
"I'm just a wrestler,"
Copy !req
578. to he's Al Capone.
Copy !req
579. And, when you get the
Al Capone syndrome,
Copy !req
580. that means you can
do whatever you want.
Copy !req
581. Well, in The Solid Gold,
the staff said,
Copy !req
582. "We can't serve you.
Copy !req
583. There's a no
colours policy here.
Copy !req
584. And we'd like you to leave."
Copy !req
585. The Satan's Choice members
dug their heels in and say,
Copy !req
586. "No, we're not leaving."
Copy !req
587. Sudbury police are called
and there's a face off,
Copy !req
588. basically, between the
Sudbury police and
Copy !req
589. the Satan's Choice.
Copy !req
590. The Satan's Choice backed down.
Copy !req
591. Johnny K-9 and Mike Dube
talk about how upset
Copy !req
592. they were with what
happened at The Solid Gold.
Copy !req
593. So, they decided that they
would bomb the strip club.
Copy !req
594. K-9 and another member of
the Hamilton group
Copy !req
595. offered to arrange the
explosives and the bombs.
Copy !req
596. Johnny doesn't know there's
been a change in the plans and,
Copy !req
597. Michael Dube decides
that this bomb is not
Copy !req
598. gonna go to The Solid Gold.
Copy !req
599. He decides that this
bomb is gonna go
Copy !req
600. to the Sudbury police station.
Copy !req
601. So, they went and they put
the bomb in an alley
Copy !req
602. beside police headquarters.
Copy !req
603. And, it blew a
hole in a brick wall.
Copy !req
604. A phone call is
basically made to Johnny,
Copy !req
605. another member
calls him and says,
Copy !req
606. "Yeah, the police station
got bombed in Sudbury."
Copy !req
607. You could tell in
this conversation
Copy !req
608. that Johnny's confused.
Copy !req
609. He didn't know he was
manipulated
Copy !req
610. I think until the downfall.
Copy !req
611. Several months after the
police station bombing,
Copy !req
612. law enforcement prepares
for an elaborate takedown
Copy !req
613. of Satan's Choice.
Copy !req
614. This is getting into 1997 so,
Copy !req
615. we have a lot of the members in,
Copy !req
616. in Hamilton on
narcotics charges,
Copy !req
617. on extortion charges,
collecting money.
Copy !req
618. Plus, we also have the bombing.
Copy !req
619. Now, when we go into
the Hamilton clubhouse,
Copy !req
620. they did everything they could
to prevent us from coming in.
Copy !req
621. And that was all Johnny's doing.
Copy !req
622. He put barriers in front of
doors so we can't ram doors
Copy !req
623. and things like that.
Copy !req
624. So, we had to blow a hole in
the wall to enter the building.
Copy !req
625. So, they're coming
in with flash bangs.
Copy !req
626. Laser sight.
Copy !req
627. So, next thing you know,
we're in bed and...
Copy !req
628. I thought there was a hit.
I thought gangsters were
Copy !req
629. coming into the
house to kill us.
Copy !req
630. Then I realized.
Copy !req
631. I looked, I could
see all the boots.
Copy !req
632. 50 SWAT team members came
bursting into our home.
Copy !req
633. Yeah, it was over
at that moment.
Copy !req
634. Yeah... yeah.
Copy !req
635. The Hamilton Wentworth
Regional Police Emergency
Copy !req
636. Response Unit moved in on
the Satan's Choice clubhouse
Copy !req
637. on Lottridge Street.
Copy !req
638. Club president, Johnny K-9,
is out on bail in connection
Copy !req
639. with charges he's facing
thanks to the bombing of the
Copy !req
640. Sudbury police station
in December of 1996.
Copy !req
641. It was just so perplexing
having all of the personal
Copy !req
642. stories of, "Hey,
buddy, how you doing?"
Copy !req
643. It's like, "Hey, Bruiser,
how you doing?" Big hug.
Copy !req
644. And then you get
your stepdad going,
Copy !req
645. "Is this your friend?"
And I'm like, "Um... yeah."
Copy !req
646. My friend,
the man that tried to blow up
Copy !req
647. a police station in Ontario.
Copy !req
648. There was a great moment,
and police arranged
Copy !req
649. this moment, where they took
the crane and they lifted
Copy !req
650. the Satan's Choice logo off
the side of the building.
Copy !req
651. I think it took a
lot out of him.
Copy !req
652. It was something he built.
That was his house.
Copy !req
653. It was his...
Copy !req
654. it was his life.
Copy !req
655. Johnny made a spontaneous
utterance when he was
Copy !req
656. arrested where he, basically,
Copy !req
657. turned to me and
he said, "Lenny,
Copy !req
658. that wasn't for
the police station.
Copy !req
659. That was for the,
The Solid Gold."
Copy !req
660. In this case, Johnny K-9
was interrogated by a
Copy !req
661. biker squad officer who
just knows how to
Copy !req
662. lean on him enough
to get him to...
Copy !req
663. point at someone.
Copy !req
664. With wiretap evidence and
Johnny K-9's statement
Copy !req
665. to authorities, Michael Dube
is implicated as the
Copy !req
666. mastermind behind the
police station bombing,
Copy !req
667. and Johnny is released on bail.
Copy !req
668. One of their unwritten rules is,
Copy !req
669. you don't make any
statement to the police.
Copy !req
670. You don't assist them
in their investigation.
Copy !req
671. So, when he comes out of jail...
Copy !req
672. they remove him from the club.
Copy !req
673. He was...
Copy !req
674. being accused of being a rat.
Copy !req
675. I would see a
friend of ours and,
Copy !req
676. "Hey, how's it going?"
Copy !req
677. And, this one guy
turned on me and said,
Copy !req
678. "Your man's a ... ing rat."
Copy !req
679. And I just up and
ing cracked the guy.
Copy !req
680. I mean, I stuck up for
Johnny no matter what.
Copy !req
681. I was so in love with him.
Copy !req
682. I was blinded by his love.
Copy !req
683. But I went from being proud
and happy to be with him...
Copy !req
684. to being really nervous
and scared for my life.
Copy !req
685. The police would
pull me over randomly.
Copy !req
686. An undercover officer
would just get out and
Copy !req
687. come to my window,
and I'd get really mad.
Copy !req
688. "What did you pull me over for?
Copy !req
689. I'm not doing
anything wrong."
Copy !req
690. "Listen, I just
want to tell you,
Copy !req
691. your life's in danger."
Copy !req
692. Telling me there's a
hit on me and John.
Copy !req
693. Yeah, it was really scary.
Copy !req
694. It was really scary, yeah.
Copy !req
695. In January of 2000,
he went off to prison
Copy !req
696. for bombing the police station.
Copy !req
697. Our baby was about
2 years old, I believe.
Copy !req
698. And, yeah, I had to get far
away from all the troubles
Copy !req
699. that Johnny brought.
Copy !req
700. Then I was like,
this is my escape route.
Copy !req
701. So, I left with
clothes on our backs,
Copy !req
702. basically, and off
to Vancouver I went.
Copy !req
703. While Johnny serves a prison
sentence of 33 months for
Copy !req
704. the bombing, Tracy flees
with her children to the
Copy !req
705. west coast of Canada in
a desperate attempt
Copy !req
706. to start a new life.
Copy !req
707. I divorced him.
I had moved on with my life.
Copy !req
708. 'Til he followed me
out there, 2002.
Copy !req
709. He got released.
Copy !req
710. He told me that he
missed me and everything,
Copy !req
711. but honestly, I think that
he was being run out of
Copy !req
712. his own hometown and he
thought British Columbia
Copy !req
713. was the best thing for him.
Copy !req
714. He flew across, landed
at the Vancouver airport.
Copy !req
715. And as soon as I saw
him at the airport...
Copy !req
716. I just, I was
so in love with him.
Copy !req
717. I wanted to believe
what he was telling me.
Copy !req
718. I told him, I said, "You know,
Copy !req
719. let's turn something bad
into something really good."
Copy !req
720. He was at one time wanting
to open a wrestling school.
Copy !req
721. Instead he went to prison again.
Copy !req
722. After only a few months in
British Columbia,
Copy !req
723. Johnny's criminal past
as an enforcer
Copy !req
724. comes back to haunt him.
Copy !req
725. He's arrested for a double
murder committed in Ontario
Copy !req
726. back in 1998.
Copy !req
727. The Gilbanks were
murdered in 1998.
Copy !req
728. A lawyer and her husband.
Copy !req
729. Lynn and Fred Gilbank.
Copy !req
730. It looked like a stolen car
was used to drive the killer
Copy !req
731. to their house at
5 in the morning.
Copy !req
732. The killer went up the
stairs with a shotgun.
Copy !req
733. Fred Gilbank came out,
Copy !req
734. was shot twice and
died in the hallway.
Copy !req
735. The killer continued on
to the bedroom
Copy !req
736. where Lynn Gilbank
was still in bed.
Copy !req
737. And, she was shot four times.
Copy !req
738. In searching for
motives for this,
Copy !req
739. they went through
all of Lynn's cases.
Copy !req
740. And, a Gravelle drug case was
one that had troubled her
Copy !req
741. and she had mentioned
it to someone else,
Copy !req
742. that she was concerned about
the safety of her client.
Copy !req
743. So, the police theory was
that it was an attempt to
Copy !req
744. intimidate the legal
community and other
Copy !req
745. criminals from ratting
on the Gravelle family.
Copy !req
746. Johnny K-9 and Andre Gravelle
Copy !req
747. were charged with murder
about 9 years later.
Copy !req
748. I had a voicemail
message from Scott D'Amore.
Copy !req
749. And it was just like,
"Did you hear about K-9?"
Copy !req
750. And I'm like, oh, no.
I thought he died,
Copy !req
751. and I called Scott D'Amore
back and he's like,
Copy !req
752. "Yeah, he's been charged
with a double murder."
Copy !req
753. I'm just like, "What?"
Copy !req
754. It's hard for me to picture
the guy who was willing to
Copy !req
755. stand beside me
through thick and thin,
Copy !req
756. no matter what, to
see how he, you know,
Copy !req
757. could do something
at that level. And...
Copy !req
758. Maybe I'm naive.
Copy !req
759. But, that's just
not the John I knew.
Copy !req
760. So, he spent 20 months in jail.
Copy !req
761. And got released.
Copy !req
762. The police didn't
have a strong case.
Copy !req
763. It was withdrawn and, Andre
Gravelle and Johnny K-9
Copy !req
764. are innocent of that crime.
Copy !req
765. In 2006, murder charges were
withdrawn against Johnny and
Copy !req
766. Andre Gravelle when
prosecutors determined there
Copy !req
767. was no real
prospect of conviction.
Copy !req
768. Gravelle subsequently
sues authorities in Ontario,
Copy !req
769. alleging malicious prosecution,
Copy !req
770. and obtains an undisclosed
amount in the settlement.
Copy !req
771. Johnny never
killed the Gilbanks,
Copy !req
772. that was a load of crap, okay.
Copy !req
773. So, he came back to BC in 2007.
Copy !req
774. That's when I remarried him.
Copy !req
775. And...
Copy !req
776. Yeah.
Copy !req
777. Johnny was saying,
Copy !req
778. "What am I gonna
ing do for money?"
Copy !req
779. I said, "Movie industry."
Copy !req
780. Sammy!
Copy !req
781. Little help, little help!
Copy !req
782. Not a great actor.
He tried his best and
Copy !req
783. he had a lot of fun
doing it, you know.
Copy !req
784. But, then he, he was in a gym in
Copy !req
785. North Vancouver and
saw a Hell's Angel.
Copy !req
786. Then he, he started talking
to the United Nations and
Copy !req
787. he comes home bragging,
and I'm like, "What?
Copy !req
788. Wait a minute.
We're going backwards here.
Copy !req
789. You're supposed to be
changing your life.
Copy !req
790. What the...
are you doing?"
Copy !req
791. Out on the west coast he got
involved with the UN gang.
Copy !req
792. A multi-ethnic
organized crime gang.
Copy !req
793. He tried to hide it from me,
but it didn't last long.
Copy !req
794. I mean, we'd have 100 pounds
of weed in my kitchen
Copy !req
795. while my kids were at daycare.
Copy !req
796. And he'd go, "Wait a minute.
Copy !req
797. I'm gonna spray it with
whiskey and Coca-Cola.
Copy !req
798. It'll weigh more and
we'll make more money."
Copy !req
799. I'm like,
"You're ... ing crazy."
Copy !req
800. So, we'd be there spraying
the weed all over
Copy !req
801. my kitchen floor, and I'd be
bagging and weighing.
Copy !req
802. He was coming home
with 20, 30 grand,
Copy !req
803. just stacking bank.
And I'm like,
Copy !req
804. "John, you're
doing the same thing
Copy !req
805. you were doing in Hamilton."
Copy !req
806. Police say these are
the faces of the UN gang,
Copy !req
807. and investigators
want them all in jail.
Copy !req
808. In 2008, a botched hit
on behalf of the
Copy !req
809. United Nations gang would
result in the death of
Copy !req
810. an innocent young man.
Copy !req
811. In the vendettas that were
going on between these
Copy !req
812. two BC gangs, John was
picked up by the police
Copy !req
813. in connection with
murders there.
Copy !req
814. Then he was charged in 2009
for first degree murder.
Copy !req
815. I was 9 months pregnant
when he was arrested.
Copy !req
816. And, that day that
he went into custody,
Copy !req
817. I didn't know at the time,
but that was the last day
Copy !req
818. he would ever be free.
Copy !req
819. Johnny K-9 pleads guilty to
conspiracy to commit murder.
Copy !req
820. However, the first-degree
murder charge is stayed.
Copy !req
821. After serving 4 years
of his prison sentence,
Copy !req
822. Johnny is released to a
halfway house in Toronto.
Copy !req
823. And he was supposed to
come back to Vancouver
Copy !req
824. in 6 weeks.
Copy !req
825. But instead,
the police came to my door.
Copy !req
826. And, they said,
"Do you know Ion Croitoru?"
Copy !req
827. And I said, "Yeah."
Copy !req
828. Now, in my mind,
I'm thinking, oh, shit.
Copy !req
829. I said, "What's
going on?" And...
Copy !req
830. He said to me, "Ion
passed away this morning."
Copy !req
831. I went completely numb.
Copy !req
832. And, I was shocked.
Copy !req
833. It was so hard, so hard.
Copy !req
834. On February 21, 2017,
Copy !req
835. Ion William Croitoru,
Copy !req
836. aka Johnny K-9,
dies at the age of 53.
Copy !req
837. The cause of his death is
the subject of speculation.
Copy !req
838. He died of a heart attack and
Copy !req
839. probably because
of his lifestyle.
Copy !req
840. I know he was in...
Copy !req
841. in trouble on the west coast.
Copy !req
842. So, either it was a hot shot
Copy !req
843. 'cause they wanted him gone.
Copy !req
844. You know, and...
Copy !req
845. somebody gave him some,
some good stuff.
Copy !req
846. And, he went for the big ride.
Copy !req
847. Or, he just couldn't
do it anymore.
Copy !req
848. The reason he died is
because he got maced
Copy !req
849. by the guards in prison.
Copy !req
850. They had to
scrape his lungs, so...
Copy !req
851. you know, there's a
lot more to that, but...
Copy !req
852. Somebody sent me the headline,
Copy !req
853. "Natural causes succeed
where mobsters and
Copy !req
854. gangsters failed -
Johnny K-9 is dead."
Copy !req
855. And it looked like the
headline of a Chicago
Copy !req
856. newspaper for something
like Capone in The Outfit.
Copy !req
857. And I started laughing
and I just thought...
Copy !req
858. If Johnny K-9 could write
his own headline
Copy !req
859. for his death...
Copy !req
860. That's what he'd write.
Copy !req
861. Well, he, he had that
charisma that forms...
Copy !req
862. folk heroes.
Copy !req
863. Al Capone was a
very dangerous person,
Copy !req
864. and the fact that he
killed people and,
Copy !req
865. and was involved in
crime his whole life,
Copy !req
866. he made a living in crime and,
Copy !req
867. and the fact that they,
they made him a folk hero.
Copy !req
868. And these types of descriptions
Copy !req
869. sort of fit Johnny K-9.
Copy !req
870. I mean, we're still
talking about him.
Copy !req
871. I mean... yeah.
Copy !req
872. Johnny's death certainly
doesn't bring closure.
Copy !req
873. A horrible double murder
is still wide open.
Copy !req
874. We have lost one of our
opportunities to find out
Copy !req
875. what really happened when two
good people were murdered.
Copy !req
876. This was a guy that hurt a
lot of people in his life.
Copy !req
877. If you owed him money,
yeah, he'd smack you.
Copy !req
878. But he never killed anybody.
Copy !req
879. He was hanging out
with the wrong people,
Copy !req
880. trying to make money,
not realizing how deep
Copy !req
881. he was in with guys that
were killing people.
Copy !req
882. Um, no.
Copy !req
883. I, I totally disagree
with what Tracy would say.
Copy !req
884. Johnny K-9 is a
very dangerous person.
Copy !req
885. And, I...
Copy !req
886. believe that...
Copy !req
887. how can I put this?
Copy !req
888. I don't doubt for a minute
that he's involved in homicide.
Copy !req
889. If you asked the wrestlers he
shared a locker room with,
Copy !req
890. couldn't be a nicer guy.
Copy !req
891. If you asked the families
of the people that
Copy !req
892. he's alleged to have been
responsible for killing,
Copy !req
893. you'd probably get
a different answer.
Copy !req
894. Smash a beer bottle
over his head.
Copy !req
895. We will try it today, Jimmy!
Copy !req
896. I can't canonize him as a
saint and just mourn his loss.
Copy !req
897. There's this other side and,
having those emotions
Copy !req
898. inside of who he really was,
Copy !req
899. who I wanted him to be, who...
Copy !req
900. in my experience, he was.
Copy !req
901. And then, hoping that he
could get at least closer to
Copy !req
902. the side of the guy
that I knew and wanted to,
Copy !req
903. to live out his days with
his wife would have been,
Copy !req
904. you know, that happy
ending that you want.
Copy !req
905. For guys that you know, and...
Copy !req
906. when it doesn't happen,
it hits you pretty hard.
Copy !req
907. If I could go back and
sit in the room with Johnny
Copy !req
908. again for his first night,
I would tell him,
Copy !req
909. "Go back and be a dad.
Go back and be a husband.
Copy !req
910. Go back to wrestling."
Copy !req
911. You know, "You follow this life,
Copy !req
912. in three years...
Copy !req
913. you're gonna be
somewhere else."
Copy !req
914. His life is probably also a
life of thwarted ambition.
Copy !req
915. He tried to move from
enforcer to leader,
Copy !req
916. and failed miserably.
Copy !req
917. As a wrestler, he tried
to make it into the bigs.
Copy !req
918. And he got the edge of that,
but didn't stay.
Copy !req
919. He didn't have what it
takes to last there either.
Copy !req
920. There'll probably be a
million fans that have
Copy !req
921. no idea who he is.
Copy !req
922. Johnny K-9!
Copy !req
923. And, there's probably
someone that was in the
Copy !req
924. Knoxville Coliseum that saw
him beat Randy Savage that
Copy !req
925. thought he was the scariest
person they ever saw and,
Copy !req
926. you know, to this day
has nightmares about him.
Copy !req
927. What's going on?
Copy !req
928. Wrestling is, is subjective.
It is to you what it is.
Copy !req
929. In my opinion, he was the
baddest mother... er
Copy !req
930. in the ring, and he had a good
time doing what he loved.
Copy !req
