Dark Side of the Ring 3x10

1. With death defying stunts and relentless bloodshed,

2. Japan's Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling burst into

3. life in 1989, led by revolutionary pioneer,

4. Atsushi Onita.

5. Onita and his promotion, they were pioneers.

6. In the late 1980s, the WWE was relatively homogenized.

7. WCW could get a little wild,

8. but FMW took it to a whole different level.

9. You get Onita, will bleed to death.

10. Every night, he bleeds to death.

11. By putting himself and his roster of wrestlers

12. in increasingly dangerous situations,

13. Onita filled stadiums with diehard fans,

14. and became a global icon of hardcore wrestling.

15. As much as they were known for the brutality,

16. it was really the imagination that made that company click.

17. A no rope barbed wire match.

18. And then they go to the exploding barb wire,

19. then they go to the exploding ring.

20. And then the electrified pool.

21. It just got crazier, and crazier, and crazier.

22. You've gotta be just nuttier than a fruitcake

23. to get into one of those matches.

24. It got too hot, everybody ran to the middle.

25. And everybody's saying, "Get out of here,

26. get out of here, get out of here!"

27. The promotion's meteoric rise was followed by an equally

28. spectacular crash that left its top star paralyzed and

29. its new CEO dead.

30. Some place the blame for FMW's tragic downfall on

31. its founder, who sacrificed everything

32. for fame and fortune.

33. Some of my dad's fans say that he killed my father.

34. Did he run over some people?

35. I'm sure he did.

36. But, it was necessary to be Atsushi Onita.

37. Superstar.

38. I am Atsushi Onita.

39. Yeah. Oh...

40. Japan's vibrant wrestling culture was popularized by

41. Giant Baba's All Japan Pro Wrestling,

42. and Antonio Inoki's New Japan Pro Wrestling.

43. Both championed an authentic,

44. hard-hitting style.

45. When Texan brawlers Terry and Dory Funk came over

46. to perform, their over the top western personas

47. instantly captivated Japanese audiences.

48. For some reason,

49. the people took to me in Japan.

50. Meaner than a rattlesnake, tougher than shoe leather.

51. More dangerous than a hollowed eye scorpion.

52. Middle aged and crazy.

53. Crazy like a fox.

54. Do you know who that is?

55. That is me. The best there ever was.

56. Oh, my god!

57. And the best there ever will be.

58. We've got a new champion!

59. Terry Funk. Alright, ask me some questions.

60. Terry Funk is one of the most universally loved

61. performers in Japanese history.

62. And he worked All Japan, he worked New Japan.

63. He'd be known as an all-time great.

64. My name is Chris Jericho and,

65. I worked for two tours in FMW.

66. Onita was a guy that started out in,

67. I think it was All Japan, and he was kind of a high flyer.

68. A young disciple of Giant Baba,

69. Onita rose through the ranks of All Japan's dojo system

70. before being sent to America to further his craft and

71. learn from the styles of the west.

72. Japanese wrestlers would be sent to the different

73. wrestling territories to further learn their trade.

74. It was almost like an apprenticeship.

75. My name is Mick Foley.

76. I'm known as the king of the death match.

77. For a few years, I was the American Onita.

78. And that was a huge, huge compliment.

79. Well, Terry told me that Onita was sent to Amarillo.

80. Onita was very drawn to Terry's style.

81. He'd watch me in barbed wire matches.

82. And, he really idolized me.

83. That's why he came to Amarillo,

84. be like Terry Funk, you know, and...

85. what a horrible thing to want to be.

86. He wanted to be an idiot too.

87. A mighty fine tractor ride here

88. out on the Double Cross Ranch.

89. When Onita arrived in Amarillo,

90. he was recovering from recent injuries suffered in

91. the Dominican Republic.

92. After refusing to lose to an opponent he deemed inferior,

93. Onita was taught a painful lesson by the promoter.

94. He didn't agree with what they wanted to do with him

95. and they beat him up. But it wasn't one guy.

96. It was all of 'em. Rat Packed him.

97. Nuts.

98. I spoke Japanese like he spoke English.

99. He spoke English like I spoke Japanese.

100. We both were lost.

101. But we got along.

102. I was there for him, I really was.

103. And, I bought him a used car.

104. And I got him a job and sent him on the road.

105. The Japanese team of Mr. Onita and Masa Fuchi...

106. After Onita recovers from his injuries,

107. he and fellow protégé, Masa Fuchi,

108. travel to Memphis Tennessee to battle in the infamous

109. Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl.

110. Into the concession stand after tearing down a partition!

111. - Slams Onita!

112. Totally covered there by that big fan!

113. Onita, pulling himself over the counter.

114. With an improved skillset and a willingness to inject

115. thrilling violence into his matches,

116. Onita makes a return to All Japan Pro Wrestling.

117. On the cusp of main event stardom,

118. a freak accident results in a devastating injury.

119. The injury permanently hinders Onita's athleticism,

120. instantly ending his dreams of becoming a high flying star.

121. He was limited, as an athlete.

122. He realized that his future in wrestling lay in the

123. powers of perseverance and imagination.

124. What do you do when you're in your,

125. you know, late 20s, early 30s,

126. and your whole career is gone?

127. Well, he created something that had never been done before.

128. After years of working odd jobs,

129. Onita's thirst for stardom drives him

130. to devise a bold stunt.

131. He publicly challenges real-life karate champion,

132. Masahi Aoyagi, to compete in a ground breaking series of

133. brutal matches, pitting wrestler against martial artist.

134. Building upon the violence Onita was

135. exposed to in America...

136. Their rivalry makes headlines,

137. and draws massive crowds.

138. By the time Onita claims victory in their final bout,

139. his Frontier MartialArts Wrestling promotion

140. is officially born.

141. FMW had a really good thing going because

142. they gave you a full course meal.

143. You know, you got your technical wrestling,

144. flying wrestling, incredible women.

145. But the hallmark was always the blood and guts.

146. Ah, it was like a buffet of brutality.

147. The thinking that goes behind replacing ring ropes

148. with barbed wire is the audience comes first.

149. We care about them far more than the safety of

150. the people doing this.

151. And, real injuries are not a bad thing.

152. They're encouraged.

153. And they are impossible to avoid.

154. A lot of guys that would go to no end...

155. to self-annihilation

156. of their bodies...

157. to have a better match than what

158. the opposition did.

159. Okay, the barbed wire isn't enough.

160. We're gonna have to rig up, like,

161. electrical shocks to it.

162. Like, this was, this was, this was insane!

163. In Onita's pursuit to compete with Japan's

164. two major promotions,

165. his matches feature increasingly dangerous

166. stunts that result in legitimate bloodshed.

167. I was at an FMW show when one of the female wrestlers

168. got hit with a fireball.

169. And, her outfit, it burned the fabric into her skin.

170. And, I'm getting ready to do my match and I just hear

171. these almost other worldly sounds of suffering.

172. Tears streaming down her face,

173. sobs like I have never heard before.

174. And it's like, we talk about a price,

175. that's really, really steep.

176. And I had to block that out of my mind and go about with

177. my main event match.

178. Onita's FMW roster includes like-minded performers

179. Tarzan Goto, Mr. Pogo, Masado Tanaka,

180. The Gladiator aka Mike Awesome,

181. as well as up and coming talent with

182. North American experience.

183. Hi, this is Ricky Fuji from FMW.

184. We had a connection with a guy called Ricky Fuji,

185. who had spent time in Calgary,

186. that was able to bring some guys over to FMW.

187. My first match ever at FMW was the main event,

188. which is hilarious when you think about a 20-year-old

189. Chris Jericho in the main event against a

190. karate expert who was just beating the shit out of me.

191. They would be in there kicking you as hard as

192. they could 'cause that's all they knew how to do.

193. I was like, what the hell am I doing here?

194. So, I was never invited. I was never invited.

195. It was completely luck.

196. I'm Sabu. I was in FMW for 3 years.

197. New Japan for a year,

198. and an independent the rest of my life.

199. There goes Sabu! Oh, did you see that?

200. - For the love of God! - Oh!

201. My uncle was The Sheik, and...

202. He was a great guy.

203. He was a mean guy, and he was a nice guy, ha.

204. Onita and Tarzan Goto, they were young boys when

205. The Sheik and Abdullah the Butcher was in Japan

206. in the early 70s and 80s.

207. Every time they came to town,

208. they took care of those two guys.

209. So, 20 years later, Onita starts a company,

210. and he calls up The Sheik and says,

211. "We're gonna have a tag team tournament.

212. You can come there.

213. Come and bring anybody you want."

214. He goes, "I'll bring my nephew."

215. And he could've chose anybody,

216. but he chose me.

217. Oh, it sucks, it sucks.

218. My first barbed wire match, I got hurt.

219. They took me to the hospital.

220. I was in there all night long getting stitches.

221. After that, I never went to the hospital.

222. It took too long.

223. So, I started crazy gluing my cuts and then taping 'em.

224. I basically taped and glued up all the boys, too.

225. A single barb can do a lot of damage in a hurry,

226. and it has.

227. There are some gaping wounds.

228. I mean, Sabu really paid the price,

229. you know, with a roadmap of scars.

230. Makes me look like, you know, like a...

231. like a preschooler.

232. FMW's wrestlers sacrificed their bodies on

233. a nightly basis, but none can connect with

234. the audience quite like the promotion's

235. founder and star, Atsushi Onita.

236. Onita had an ability to allow people to feel his pain.

237. And, see themselves in him.

238. Some people can't connect with

239. a larger than life superhero.

240. They can connect with somebody who looks like they do.

241. Who is limited, physically,

242. but not limited of will.

243. !

244. You know, there's man against man, man against himself,

245. and now you enter man against the wire,

246. man against flames.

247. Where, you're making a living,

248. you re putting on a show, you re doing what you love,

249. but you're also facing fear on a nightly basis.

250. And you have to tackle it.

251. And you have to earn their respect,

252. and you have to embrace it wholeheartedly.

253. The whole end of his match would be,

254. basically, crying in front of the fans.

255. The meaning was he had given it his all,

256. and he was crying...

257. because the fans had stood behind him.

258. And they played Joan Jett's version of 'Wild Thing'.

259. And everybody would get up out of their seats and

260. crowd around the ringside

261. as he poured water on his head and cried.

262. And dude, it got over so huge.

263. Wee-ah, wee-ah, wee-ah!

264. !

265. So, if he could think it, he was going to do it.

266. And, I think there was a reasonably good chance that

267. he was going to die in that ring.

268. In Onita's pursuit to consistently top himself,

269. a tag team match with Tarzan Goto versus Sabu and

270. his 65-year-old uncle, The Sheik,

271. goes terribly wrong.

272. I don't know.

273. I assume Puerto Rico 'cause they had one before,

274. and Onita wanted to top it.

275. I didn't care.

276. I figured, they know what they're doing.

277. They know...

278. it would be safe.

279. Wow, that's taking things outside of your own hands

280. and trusting the environment someone else

281. has created for you.

282. I'm not comfortable with that,

283. and I've seen a lot of people get burned, literally.

284. It got too hot way too fast.

285. If it was a building, I would have jumped off it.

286. There was an FMW logo in the middle.

287. It melted in our hands.

288. It melted in our elbows, hands and knees.

289. You couldn't hear nothing, you couldn't breathe.

290. It was a roar.

291. I jumped out, and immediately turned around,

292. threw a bucket of water.

293. He went out the other side. I didn't see that.

294. He got burned by the fire pretty bad.

295. My uncle carried on wrestling Onita outside of the ring.

296. And I was trying to throw water on my uncle because

297. he had his back burned up.

298. I threw a bucket of water on him and

299. the skin on his back came off.

300. I wasn't angry at anybody.

301. I was just angry that it was bad.

302. You know, and the plan was bad.

303. I can't be angry at Onita. He gave me life.

304. Riding high with an expanding fan base and

305. sold out shows, Onita revels in the trappings

306. of his newfound stardom.

307. He may have started as a scrappy underdog,

308. and he became...

309. the king.

310. And was treated as such.

311. And he had sticky fingers.

312. He took all the money.

313. Onita's fortune is not only gained from the violence

314. he presents in the ring, but from ties with

315. the nefarious underworld.

316. They were in control of the arenas.

317. So, the Yakuza were, they were definitely there.

318. It's kind of almost like a money laundering scheme,

319. holding shows that the mafia will kind of sponsor and put on.

320. We would go out to dinner sometimes with sponsors,

321. and I would just check out their pinkies.

322. And, by and large, a lot of the sponsors were missing

323. their pinkies because of the line of business they were

324. in where, sections of the pinkies would be eliminated.

325. I wasn't comfortable with it,

326. but I accepted that that was part of

327. what made the scene possible.

328. Well, they told us to stay away from a certain section,

329. and I go, there's not many people in that section,

330. who cares?

331. It was because that was the mafia section and like,

332. they had like 10 people there with 50 chairs empty

333. 'cause nobody was... they were scared to sit by 'em.

334. I started fighting over there anyways,

335. and they wouldn't move for us.

336. Usually people move.

337. He's a mafia boss, we don't know that.

338. But then, later on, we're in the dressing room

339. getting bang, bang, bang on the door.

340. They're looking for us.

341. I run down this hallway and I got trapped.

342. And a bunch of these Japanese guys

343. are knocking me down.

344. And, when I was down,

345. I was getting boot... ed, kicked.

346. And then all of a sudden, Mike Awesome was there.

347. Mike Awesome, you know, the huge, monster heel.

348. Guys started getting flung off.

349. Mike Awesome starts throwing guys off and,

350. saved my life. I loved him after that.

351. In 4 short years, Onita overcame his injury

352. to build a promotion to rival his competitors.

353. To celebrate, Onita invites his mentor from America to

354. participate in FMW's most spectacular stunt to date.

355. So, they had an exploding ring death match.

356. And they were really smart in bringing in Terry Funk.

357. For him to come to FMW,

358. it changed the perception of this company.

359. "Terry's here?"

360. It was stadium full. About 30, 40,000.

361. And, they don't charge 50 cents a ticket

362. over there either.

363. There's the idiots, it's the front row people.

364. "We're gonna have an exploding ring match tonight."

365. "Oh, I want a front row ticket!"

366. Bullshit.

367. Oh, hell no. I had no idea.

368. I just went out to the damn ring.

369. I'm a glutton for a crowd being into a match, you know.

370. I was just out there ready to capture that crowd.

371. And we did.

372. So, the siren starts going off.

373. Wee-ooh, wee-ooh, wee-ooh.

374. And at the end of this time clock,

375. the ring would explode.

376. And finally, Onita gets the win,

377. and he leaves the ring.

378. And this thing is going down:

379. 45 seconds, 30 seconds.

380. And Onita realizes that his hero,

381. almost the God of Japanese pro wrestling is going to be

382. exploded in this ring.

383. So, he goes back inside the ring and he tries to wake

384. Funker up, and he can't wake him up.

385. And now it's 10 seconds.

386. He can't wake him up, so what does he do?

387. He shields Terry Funk with his body.

388. - [Bang!]

389. And it's a bunch of like, boom, boom, boom,

390. concussion bombs and fireworks and just,

391. by the time it's done, you can't see anything.

392. It was the greatest babyface thing I've ever seen in my life.

393. He covered Terry Funk to save him from

394. the explosion after he pinned him.

395. That's Onita.

396. What FMW did the best was create a spectacle.

397. You know, Funk survived thanks to Onita,

398. and they were kind of like carrying each other out.

399. Crying, once again.

400. And Funk was great at it, too,

401. crying, crying, crying.

402. To me, it's a five-star match because it had

403. the drama and hooked you into it,

404. to where you cared.

405. And, that's the real secret of what wrestling is.

406. That's what Onita really knew how to do.

407. He was a genius at it.

408. Well, hell no, I wasn't satisfied.

409. I never, never saw Onita after a match either

410. until I came back the next time. I think he ran and hid.

411. FMW was at least the number 3 promotion in the country,

412. if not number two, depending on what was going on with

413. the two big ones at the time.

414. He legit was one of the most popular performers

415. in the country, and not just in wrestling.

416. He was doing gameshows.

417. He'd become such a big part of the culture.

418. I think Onita had bigger plans.

419. In just five short years after creating FMW,

420. Onita announces his retirement,

421. which comes as a shock to his fans.

422. He didn't want to do it anymore.

423. He'd had enough.

424. And you can fail and not have any money at all.

425. Or you can go out like he did with

426. several million dollars, I'm sure.

427. Onita continues to headline shows for another full year,

428. while the promotion grooms a young wrestler to become

429. his future headlining successor.

430. Hayabusa!

431. Hayabusa was the heir apparent to Onita.

432. He was...

433. ah, the word that's coming is elegant.

434. But he was also willing to do the extreme stuff.

435. Eiji Ezaki is his name, who later became Hayabusa.

436. We worked together quite a bit.

437. My second tour at Kawasaki Stadium was against Ezaki.

438. And at the time, the big move that

439. he did was Moonsault, which nobody did.

440. At FMW's 6th anniversary show,

441. Onita's retirement match features the special effects

442. and extreme gore that made him an icon.

443. But his opponent is out of his element.

444. Onita leaving FMW,

445. that would create a huge hole that I think would be

446. next to impossible to fill, just because of how,

447. how synonymous with that company he was.

448. And vice versa.

449. It'd be hard to see Onita anywhere else

450. other than thinking FMW.

451. They're one and the same.

452. An unlikely successor emerges to take the reins

453. of FMW, the promotion's ring announcer,

454. Shoichi Arai.

455. "Sudden Impact, Lance Storm, Chris Jericho-ah!"

456. And he's kind of like, kind of a chubby guy,

457. but kind of wore a tuxedo that was a little bit

458. too small for him.

459. But then you hear like Arai's the

460. new like general manager.

461. - Oh!

462. Like, really? Like, wow. Like, well, why not?

463. He was probably at every show.

464. My dad was really nice person.

465. He was really pure.

466. So, I didn't know why he was trying to

467. get into that company. I still don't understand.

468. My name is Shell. And, Shoichi Arai is my dad.

469. Onita suddenly says that, "Okay,

470. I'm gonna give this company to you.

471. You can do whatever you want."

472. But he has no knowledge at all.

473. Excuse my language, but he gave jack shit

474. to the ring announcer. He didn't give nothing to him.

475. I'll promise you that, I'll swear to it.

476. Without Onita's star power,

477. FMW struggles to hold its audience.

478. After just one starring film role,

479. Onita realizes his appeal is

480. limited when he's not wrestling.

481. In less than a year after his retirement,

482. he unexpectedly returns to FMW to work

483. for his former ring announcer.

484. Ah, yes, because they would air our stuff

485. only on specials because it was too violent.

486. To take FMW in a new direction,

487. Arai hires veteran Japanese star Hiromichi Fuyuki to

488. handle the company's creative direction.

489. He had a belt called World Entertainment Wrestling,

490. like WWE, but World Entertainment Wrestling.

491. And they stopped having death matches.

492. The tug of war between Onita's vision for FMW and

493. Fuyuki's new direction, forces Arai to arrange

494. a meeting with his top talent.

495. While Hayabusa is unable to pack stadiums like

496. his predecessor, his athletic style was winning

497. new fans and realizing success for FMW.

498. Until tragedy struck on October 22, 2001.

499. He did a second rope Moonsault and

500. his foot slipped, and he went backwards and

501. landed on his forehead.

502. Hayabusa...

503. Hayabusa? Hayabusa?

504. Hayabusa?

505. He didn't die.

506. It was worse, he was paralyzed.

507. I'd rather have died.

508. Just terrible. Terrible injury to happen to just

509. a great guy, a great, great performer,

510. and a legit kind of future legend.

511. All the boxes that needed to be checked,

512. he had it.

513. His career was cut short in his prime.

514. And I think with his career went the future of FMW.

515. They never really found somebody to replace Hayabusa.

516. Beyond being a serious emotional blow to FMW and

517. its fans, Hayabusa's injury also sets in motion

518. a financial disaster.

519. Without their star attraction,

520. Arai struggles to keep his fledgling company afloat.

521. I remember that my mom say,

522. "Don't steal house money," or something.

523. Oh, yes.

524. He owed money from the Yakuza and he couldn't pay them back.

525. His phone was ringing all the time.

526. My mom was like panicked, and she screamed.

527. So, I thought it's not a good thing.

528. My mom and dad, like, they divorced.

529. I think he was really suffering.

530. And, I didn't realize 'cause I was too young.

531. And then my last match there,

532. we didn't get paid. He said he'd send it to me.

533. And then he killed himself the next day.

534. Hung himself in a school yard.

535. When you borrow money from the Japanese mafia,

536. even if you kill yourself, they're gonna get their

537. money from your family.

538. So, that wasn't the end of the story.

539. They were saying he was selfish for doing that,

540. a coward, because now his family owes that money.

541. You know, and they'll get it.

542. Arai's death triggers a life insurance payment,

543. but it's sadly not enough to cover his family's

544. newly inherited debt.

545. They came my home, suddenly, and they changed the key and

546. they changed everything,

547. and we couldn't get in our house anymore.

548. My picture, my video, my memories

549. was all in that house, but it's all gone.

550. That's why I don't have anything.

551. Hm... I feel a little bit that

552. Onita used my dad.

553. A lot of people say that he was too kind.

554. And too pure. That's why he's gone.

555. Over a decade later, FMW briefly rises from the ashes

556. with Onita back in the ring and Hayabusa acting

557. as an executive producer.

558. But less than a year later, tragedy strikes again when

559. Hayabusa collapses in his home and dies

560. at the age of 47.

561. He did walk again.

562. I mean, it's one of the most gut wrenching things you see

563. when he's surrounded by members of wrestling royalty

564. from several different promotions.

565. And, it's one of the most emotional moments

566. you will ever see when Hayabusa walks to the ring.

567. FMW was the wild wild west of professional wrestling.

568. And I mean, it was in the east, geographically,

569. but it was this lawless, wild frontier.

570. If you could think it, you could do it.

571. The spectacle always came first.

572. And, it was a big part of wrestling history,

573. and something that's still borrowed from,

574. to this day.

575. What I learned in FMW, of course,

576. I took it to ECW. ECW was formed from FMW.

577. Onita, basically, built a promotion around himself.

578. An undersized, under dog wrestler,

579. and made it a huge success.

580. No, hell, no. I love him.
