1. The first time I saw him,
he had this
Copy !req
2. magnetic charisma that
you could feel across the gym.
Copy !req
3. And, you just thought, hey, man,
Copy !req
4. that this guy's a star.
Copy !req
5. And I'll do whatever it takes!
Copy !req
6. To look adversity in the
face and spit in its eye.
Copy !req
7. The wrestling world could
never have imagined that
Copy !req
8. an undersized football
player from Cincinnati would
Copy !req
9. revolutionize the business,
ushering in a whole new era.
Copy !req
10. Shut the hell up!
Copy !req
11. Brian knew what the deal was.
Copy !req
12. That they're gonna
screw him over,
Copy !req
13. they're gonna
screw anybody over.
Copy !req
14. And how he could make that
play for his own advantage.
Copy !req
15. In an industry that depends
on the illusion of reality,
Copy !req
16. no one did more to blur the
lines than Brian Pillman,
Copy !req
17. who shattered
wrestling's 4th wall.
Copy !req
18. He was going
against the "script".
Copy !req
19. This has never been done before.
Copy !req
20. What the... are you doing?
Easy!
Copy !req
21. Pillman's over-the-top
antics exposed the inner
Copy !req
22. workings of the business,
leveraging trade secrets to
Copy !req
23. make the deal of a lifetime.
Copy !req
24. That Loose Cannon gimmick,
he just took it so far.
Copy !req
25. Don't go in there!
Copy !req
26. A lot of people thought, "Oh,
man, it was too extreme."
Copy !req
27. You didn't know where
Brian started and
Copy !req
28. his wrestling persona ended.
Copy !req
29. Get him the hell out'a here.
Copy !req
30. He had a lot of troublesome
relationships with women.
Copy !req
31. My mom had had enough
and that kind of
Copy !req
32. pushed her over the
edge a little bit.
Copy !req
33. He's being driven crazy at home,
Copy !req
34. he's supposed to
be crazy at work.
Copy !req
35. And in between...
Copy !req
36. he's probably
really going crazy.
Copy !req
37. On track to become a
wrestling superstar at the
Copy !req
38. price of his own sanity,
his rise to the top
Copy !req
39. was tragically cut short.
Copy !req
40. I'm watching the pre-show
for the Pay Per View.
Copy !req
41. Ladies and gentlemen,
we have some tragic
Copy !req
42. news to report...
Brian Pilman.
Copy !req
43. I just screamed.
Copy !req
44. He had a persona that
he wanted to perpetuate,
Copy !req
45. even if it killed him.
Copy !req
46. Man, this is the gold chain
that Brian Pillman got for me
Copy !req
47. way back in the day,
and I'll never forget,
Copy !req
48. we were riding down the
road one day and he goes,
Copy !req
49. "Kid, we gotta
have gold chains."
Copy !req
50. He goes,
"That'll look great."
Copy !req
51. And all these years later,
I don't have a lot of things,
Copy !req
52. you know, from my
old wrestling days,
Copy !req
53. but this chain is something
that I'll always have it.
Copy !req
54. It's very sentimental to me,
and it was a big part of the
Copy !req
55. makeup and the gimmick
of the Hollywood Blonds.
Copy !req
56. I'm Steve Austin.
Copy !req
57. A friend of Brian's from
way back in our WCW days,
Copy !req
58. and we were tag team partners.
Copy !req
59. Turned out to be really
good friends and a
Copy !req
60. pretty damn good tag team.
Copy !req
61. The Hollywood Blonds!
Copy !req
62. Brian didn't phone nothing in.
Copy !req
63. He wanted to go out
there and perform.
Copy !req
64. A guy that was never
supposed to be big enough
Copy !req
65. or bad enough or strong
enough to do anything...
Copy !req
66. He blew everybody away with
Copy !req
67. his tenacity and
his will to win.
Copy !req
68. He was a good-looking guy,
great physique, high-flyer.
Copy !req
69. Could do everything.
Copy !req
70. Oh, man!
Copy !req
71. Brian was very athletic.
Copy !req
72. It really seemed like he
was willing to try anything,
Copy !req
73. and you could tell that
he really wanted
Copy !req
74. to be a pro wrestling star.
Copy !req
75. I'm Jim Ross and,
Copy !req
76. when I was in WCW
in the mid 80s,
Copy !req
77. Brian was a guy that we
had very high hopes for and
Copy !req
78. really wanted to sign.
Copy !req
79. 'cause after we're done
pounding you into submission,
Copy !req
80. the only thing
that's gonna be prescribed
Copy !req
81. for you guys afterwards is a
liquid diet of embalming fluid!
Copy !req
82. Brian, from the time he
first got in the ring,
Copy !req
83. you could tell he
was a performer.
Copy !req
84. He was an exhibitionist.
He wanted you to notice him.
Copy !req
85. He had the personality
for wrestling.
Copy !req
86. I'm Jim Cornette.
Copy !req
87. I've been involved in
professional wrestling for
Copy !req
88. over 40 years as a
manager, promoter,
Copy !req
89. announcer, matchmaker,
and I was good friends...
Copy !req
90. In the 80s and 90s,
with Brian Pillman.
Copy !req
91. He wasn't trying to
just be the move guy.
Copy !req
92. He wasn't just trying to be
the guy with
Copy !req
93. the nice mullet and the abs.
Copy !req
94. Like, he was trying
to be everything.
Copy !req
95. He was trying to hit this
business on all fronts and
Copy !req
96. fire on all cylinders,
and he was trying to be the
Copy !req
97. biggest star that the
business had ever seen.
Copy !req
98. My name is Brian Pillman Jr.
I am only son of the
Copy !req
99. late, great Brian Pillman,
otherwise known as
Copy !req
100. the Loose Cannon.
Copy !req
101. Brian was a natural promo.
Copy !req
102. When they stuck a
mic in front of him,
Copy !req
103. he would just go off
in that raspy voice.
Copy !req
104. You're not running
this interview, I am!
Copy !req
105. 'Cause I'm Brian ing Pillman!
Copy !req
106. Growing up, Brian had multiple
polyps on his vocal cords,
Copy !req
107. and it was closing up
his air passage.
Copy !req
108. They'd scrape 'em off
and then, after so long,
Copy !req
109. they'd grow right back again.
Copy !req
110. And that's why his
voice was so raspy,
Copy !req
111. because his vocal cords had
been scraped so many times.
Copy !req
112. I'm Linda, Brian's older sister.
Copy !req
113. You know, he had
over 40 surgeries.
Copy !req
114. I don't know the exact number.
Copy !req
115. When my mother came
in from work one day,
Copy !req
116. she could hear breathing as
soon as she came in the house,
Copy !req
117. and it was closing up
his air passage.
Copy !req
118. And she called the doctor.
Copy !req
119. She had to hold the receiver up
Copy !req
120. so he could hear him breathing.
Copy !req
121. And that's when he decided he
needed emergency tracheotomy.
Copy !req
122. He told my mother to
have the ambulance
Copy !req
123. bring them to his house.
Copy !req
124. 'Cause his house was
closer than the hospital.
Copy !req
125. And he put a tracheotomy
in Brian on his
Copy !req
126. dining room table, in the
middle of the night.
Copy !req
127. But, it never stopped
him from doing anything.
Copy !req
128. He was always outside
playing and running and,
Copy !req
129. he wasn't allowed to talk
for like two or three weeks
Copy !req
130. after those surgeries
and he didn't talk.
Copy !req
131. As a result of that, I think
he overcompensated later on
Copy !req
132. by wanting to always talk,
wanting to be an entertainer.
Copy !req
133. It formed him as the guy
that was gonna overcome,
Copy !req
134. over achieve,
knock down the obstacles,
Copy !req
135. whatever the case may be.
Copy !req
136. The son of a bitch was fearless.
Copy !req
137. I mean, he was...
Copy !req
138. He was a tough, tough nut.
Copy !req
139. My name is Kim Wood.
Copy !req
140. I was the Paul Brown
Strength Coach
Copy !req
141. for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Copy !req
142. And, Pillman had a
chance to try out with us.
Copy !req
143. My instruction
was to kill him...
Copy !req
144. and not literally kill him,
but damn close.
Copy !req
145. But, he tried his ass off.
Copy !req
146. You know, he always said,
it's not about the,
Copy !req
147. the size of the
dog in the fight.
Copy !req
148. It's about the size of
the fight in the dog.
Copy !req
149. He had a reputation
in Cincinnati,
Copy !req
150. being a street fighter.
Copy !req
151. I heard that he was at some
bar that had an upper floor,
Copy !req
152. like a balcony or whatever
you want to call it.
Copy !req
153. And, he was up there
and some girl
Copy !req
154. threw a drink in his face.
Copy !req
155. And, her boyfriend
came after Brian.
Copy !req
156. Before it was over,
the guy was hanging...
Copy !req
157. Brian had him hanging
by his ankles over the,
Copy !req
158. the railing.
Over the first floor.
Copy !req
159. And Brian was
banned from that bar.
Copy !req
160. After a brief stint in the NFL,
Copy !req
161. Brian heads to Calgary
to play in the
Copy !req
162. Canadian Football League.
Copy !req
163. Soon after, Brian suffers
an ankle injury,
Copy !req
164. cutting his career short,
which leaves him
Copy !req
165. searching for what to do next.
Copy !req
166. One thing I knew
about Brian was,
Copy !req
167. is that he wasn't gonna
be a high school teacher.
Copy !req
168. He wasn't gonna sell insurance.
Copy !req
169. There was a lof of things
he wasn't gonna do.
Copy !req
170. He could use his toughness
Copy !req
171. and his physicality
to make money.
Copy !req
172. A couple years ago when
I was with the Bengals,
Copy !req
173. Kim Wood, the strength coach,
Copy !req
174. he had talked to me
about getting into
Copy !req
175. professional wrestling.
Copy !req
176. He thought I had all the tools
needed to be successful.
Copy !req
177. And it turns out, Calgary
happened to be the
Copy !req
178. premiere training ground for
wrestlers in the world.
Copy !req
179. And I said, "Hey,
while you're up there,
Copy !req
180. go check out this...
this Hart bunch."
Copy !req
181. The Hart's are the first family
of Canadian wrestling...
Copy !req
182. with patriarch
Stu Hart at the helm.
Copy !req
183. In addition to his children
that would go on to be
Copy !req
184. wrestling icons, the family
also discovered and
Copy !req
185. trained several other
future superstars.
Copy !req
186. They take him into the Hart
dungeon and they teach him
Copy !req
187. how to wrestle in one of
the most prestigious ways
Copy !req
188. to break into the
business that there is.
Copy !req
189. Well, from what I hear,
if you can't hear screaming
Copy !req
190. coming out of it,
something's not going right.
Copy !req
191. Stu, the old man, would put
people in submission holds
Copy !req
192. and then not let them
out of the thing for,
Copy !req
193. you know, 3 or 4 hours.
Copy !req
194. If you could survive that,
Copy !req
195. you could survive
almost anything.
Copy !req
196. So, you get that
great foundation...
Copy !req
197. all, right off the bat from Stu.
Copy !req
198. It was an easy bridge to cross
from football to wrestling.
Copy !req
199. Brian gets his start
in Stampede Wrestling,
Copy !req
200. and although it's a small
territory in western Canada,
Copy !req
201. its influence on the
industry is felt
Copy !req
202. around the wrestling world.
Copy !req
203. In the 80s, there were
millions of wrestling fans,
Copy !req
204. but there was a small subset
called "smart fans" that
Copy !req
205. knew the inside inner
workings of wrestling.
Copy !req
206. The insiders all knew the name
Brian Pillman pretty quick.
Copy !req
207. I'm Dave Metzler.
Copy !req
208. Editor of the Wrestling
Observer Newsletter.
Copy !req
209. It's an insider publication.
Copy !req
210. It's covered pro wrestling
since 1982.
Copy !req
211. For a long time, it was
like really the only...
Copy !req
212. you know, what I would call
true source of pro wrestling
Copy !req
213. information that was out there.
Copy !req
214. The sheets were kind of
a thing back in the day,
Copy !req
215. you didn't really want
to get caught with 'em.
Copy !req
216. You know, it's kind of
like secret documents.
Copy !req
217. And then, kind of got out
and damn near
Copy !req
218. all the boys are reading it.
Copy !req
219. And with Brian,
he had started wrestling
Copy !req
220. when he called me
the first time.
Copy !req
221. And, he wanted to send me
tapes and wanted me
Copy !req
222. to send tapes,
so we traded tapes.
Copy !req
223. As far as student
of the game, I mean,
Copy !req
224. top, top level, more than
almost anyone
Copy !req
225. that I'd ever dealt with.
Copy !req
226. Meltzer was a good
gauge for talent.
Copy !req
227. So, that tipped me off
that Meltzer kept
Copy !req
228. writing good things about Brian.
Copy !req
229. Brian wound up in WCW by
me getting a hold of it.
Copy !req
230. Alright, Brian, best
of luck on that...
Copy !req
231. Upon arriving in WCW...
Copy !req
232. Brian Pillman!
Copy !req
233. Top star and matchmaker,
Ric Flair,
Copy !req
234. sees something in Brian...
Copy !req
235. And looks to feature him on
television in a main event spot.
Copy !req
236. And we put that match together,
Copy !req
237. and it was one of the
highest rated Saturday night
Copy !req
238. television programs on
TBS at that point in
Copy !req
239. the previous several years.
Copy !req
240. And, the crowd popped for him.
Copy !req
241. Crowd's chanting:
"Go, Brian, go!"
Copy !req
242. Ric Flair was the kind of
guy that wanted to go in the
Copy !req
243. ring with somebody like
Brian and go 30 or
Copy !req
244. 45 minutes and tear
the house down.
Copy !req
245. And then he wanted to go
to the bar with Brian or
Copy !req
246. somebody like Brian,
for 5 or 6 hours and
Copy !req
247. tear the house down there.
Copy !req
248. That's the way he lived.
Copy !req
249. He lived a cartoon life,
a fantasy life of...
Copy !req
250. of limos and...
Copy !req
251. long black socks and
alligator shoes and...
Copy !req
252. you know, and babes.
Copy !req
253. I think Brian liked aspects
of the lifestyle a lot.
Copy !req
254. You know, he wanted
to be like Ric Flair.
Copy !req
255. Brian Pillman was a lady's man.
Copy !req
256. I mean, he's a gorgeous guy,
he's on television,
Copy !req
257. he's a professional athlete.
Copy !req
258. So, yeah, a lot of the women
were attracted to Brian.
Copy !req
259. Rochelle was a woman
that Brian met a club,
Copy !req
260. downtown Cincinnati.
Copy !req
261. You know, they were happy and...
Copy !req
262. we all loved her.
Copy !req
263. She went and lived with
him in Calgary for a while,
Copy !req
264. before he got the
contract down in Atlanta,
Copy !req
265. and that's when Brittany
was born in Atlanta.
Copy !req
266. My name is Brittany Pillman.
Copy !req
267. I'm the daughter
of Brian Pillman.
Copy !req
268. I was a daddy's girl.
Copy !req
269. You know, everyone sees him
as this wrestler and always
Copy !req
270. on the road and, you know,
wrestling was his life,
Copy !req
271. but outside of wrestling,
his children were his life.
Copy !req
272. My dad thought I was
his firstborn child.
Copy !req
273. When I was a year old,
he found out that he had
Copy !req
274. another daughter out
there that was 2 years old.
Copy !req
275. I'm Danielle Pillman.
I go by Dani.
Copy !req
276. And, Brian Pillman is my father,
Copy !req
277. and I am the oldest of his kids.
Copy !req
278. My dad met my mom at the
waterfront in Cincinnati,
Copy !req
279. like, some bar.
Copy !req
280. And, I mean, it was like a,
a very brief love affair.
Copy !req
281. But, she did end up
becoming pregnant,
Copy !req
282. but my dad had Rochelle as
his girlfriend at the time.
Copy !req
283. So, yeah, that's kind of why
she didn't want to
Copy !req
284. disclose that to my
father immediately,
Copy !req
285. but at a certain point,
she felt like, you know,
Copy !req
286. I needed my dad.
Copy !req
287. And, the second that I
came into the picture,
Copy !req
288. he was there for me 100%
and wanted me to be
Copy !req
289. in every part of his life.
Copy !req
290. And I think that's something
to be said about him is that
Copy !req
291. he really did
care about his kids.
Copy !req
292. You know, my dad living
that lifestyle and all these
Copy !req
293. different women and, you know,
Copy !req
294. he had obviously cheated
on my mom many times.
Copy !req
295. I'm sure that was hard on her,
Copy !req
296. but she stayed
with him, you know.
Copy !req
297. She had a lot of issues.
Copy !req
298. She suffered with
major depression.
Copy !req
299. There was a time my mom and
dad were living in Atlanta
Copy !req
300. and my dad was at a show.
Copy !req
301. The groundskeeper
broke into the place and
Copy !req
302. attacked her with an ice pick.
Copy !req
303. And, she was
stabbed several times.
Copy !req
304. Rob her, whatever, I don't know.
Copy !req
305. Stabbed her in the face,
stabbed her in the cheek.
Copy !req
306. So, that'll mess you up.
Copy !req
307. Brian Pillman's good looks
and athletic ability
Copy !req
308. allow him a spot on the
card as a generic hero,
Copy !req
309. but he's not content to
stay in one place for long,
Copy !req
310. nor do what he's told.
Copy !req
311. He was reasonably
successful, but you know,
Copy !req
312. he wanted to be a main eventer,
Copy !req
313. and he wasn't a
main eventer yet.
Copy !req
314. He was, he was a
good mid-level guy.
Copy !req
315. You know, Brian's first couple
years in WCW were tough.
Copy !req
316. I'm Eric Bischoff,
former president of WCW.
Copy !req
317. And, once upon a time,
Brian Pillman's boss.
Copy !req
318. Brian was relatively new
on the scene his first
Copy !req
319. couple years in WCW, so
he had to earn his respect.
Copy !req
320. What probably made that
even tougher was the
Copy !req
321. amount of management
transitions that took place.
Copy !req
322. Constant changeover in
management led to
Copy !req
323. stop and start pushes in
Brian's career.
Copy !req
324. As soon as he started
to gain ground and
Copy !req
325. earn respect, new
matchmakers would arrive,
Copy !req
326. pushing Brian back
down to the bottom.
Copy !req
327. But finally, they put Brian
together with Steve Austin.
Copy !req
328. He's ready to back you up 100%.
Copy !req
329. Alright, Stunning Steve Austin.
Copy !req
330. And I wasn't thrilled at all.
Copy !req
331. When people hear the
name Steve Austin,
Copy !req
332. they think he was always the
biggest star in wrestling.
Copy !req
333. At the time, in 1993, he was
still finding his way and
Copy !req
334. hadn't got a main
event spot yet.
Copy !req
335. And, this is about when I
eventually started getting
Copy !req
336. a run as the
United States Champion.
Copy !req
337. So, I was really
looking forward to that.
Copy !req
338. I walked into the building
and here's Brian coming up
Copy !req
339. behind me, and I knew Brian,
but we weren't hanging out.
Copy !req
340. He goes, "Hey, kid, we need
to come up with a finish."
Copy !req
341. And I said, "What the 'F'
are you talking about?"
Copy !req
342. He goes,
"We're a tag team now."
Copy !req
343. And I was really not, not happy.
Copy !req
344. I had nothing against Brian.
Copy !req
345. But it's like, I was,
I was a singles wrestler.
Copy !req
346. I enjoyed working with
another guy in the ring and
Copy !req
347. only having to depend on myself.
Copy !req
348. And they didn't have
no name planned for us,
Copy !req
349. no this, no that.
Copy !req
350. It was two singles guys
and they were gonna
Copy !req
351. throw us together as an
interim tag team,
Copy !req
352. basically to get other people
over because they didn't
Copy !req
353. have plans for Brian
and they didn't have plans
Copy !req
354. for Steve Austin.
Copy !req
355. So, we were gonna try to make
the most of the situation.
Copy !req
356. Any time that you
start working together and
Copy !req
357. traveling with someone,
you become closer.
Copy !req
358. And, normally I'd be
at the wheel,
Copy !req
359. Brian would be riding shotgun
reading dictionaries,
Copy !req
360. I mean, because he
was already trying to
Copy !req
361. increase his vocabulary
for promos.
Copy !req
362. And began the
pilgrimage out to Florida!
Copy !req
363. Cut through the
bureaucratic red tape and
Copy !req
364. get that title shot!
Copy !req
365. So, as it goes, we're going
down the road and he goes,
Copy !req
366. "Hey, kid. Every tag team
has to have a name.
Copy !req
367. So, what about the
Hollywood Blonds?"
Copy !req
368. He goes, "It's been done before,
Copy !req
369. but it's been awhile so,
let's do that."
Copy !req
370. And I was thinking to myself,
Copy !req
371. well, I ain't come
up with a better one.
Copy !req
372. And so, like, I was cool with
being the Hollywood Blonds.
Copy !req
373. - Guess what...
- The Hollywood Blonds!
Copy !req
374. The vests, the trunks,
everything was Brian's idea,
Copy !req
375. and we were two cocky, brash,
Copy !req
376. arrogant guys that we
started rolling the
Copy !req
377. camera footage and stuff
like that and you know,
Copy !req
378. Brian had that shit eating grin
or that laugh, you know,
Copy !req
379. when you're getting heat
on a babyface.
Copy !req
380. And Brian and I
developed this bond
Copy !req
381. and this chemistry.
Copy !req
382. I loved tag team wrestling
once I figured it out.
Copy !req
383. I hate to say it this way 'cause
it sounds really corny,
Copy !req
384. but they were
made for each other...
Copy !req
385. because they complemented
each other so well.
Copy !req
386. They worked hard to
make each other look good.
Copy !req
387. The Hollywood Blonds also
gave Brian a chance to
Copy !req
388. open up as a heel, as a bad guy.
Copy !req
389. People nowadays are
like, "Oh, I loved
Copy !req
390. the Hollywood Blonds,"
but if you go back then,
Copy !req
391. they were getting
boo'd out the building.
Copy !req
392. Pillman, you suck!
Copy !req
393. And you loved to hate 'em.
Copy !req
394. I think it was more natural
for Brian to be a heel because,
Copy !req
395. you know, he wasn't a guy
that wanted to shake hands,
Copy !req
396. and kiss babies, and smile.
Copy !req
397. He wanted to be a smartass,
he wanted to be obnoxious,
Copy !req
398. he wanted to show off.
Copy !req
399. You're all a bunch of losers!
Copy !req
400. He was getting
better at what he does,
Copy !req
401. getting global exposure.
Copy !req
402. Partying, having fun.
Copy !req
403. Brian's fast and loose
lifestyle doesn't mix well
Copy !req
404. with his turbulent
situation at home,
Copy !req
405. and he pursues yet another
woman who enters
Copy !req
406. his already complicated life.
Copy !req
407. I think Melanie was
working in Atlanta.
Copy !req
408. She was a "showgirl".
Copy !req
409. He saw her picture in a
Penthouse or something and
Copy !req
410. says, "I'm gonna
marry that girl," and
Copy !req
411. somewhere along the line,
he met her...
Copy !req
412. My dad was sleeping with
Melanie behind my
Copy !req
413. mother's back 'cause he was
always in Atlanta.
Copy !req
414. Melanie would call the
house and, that's basically,
Copy !req
415. I think how Rochelle found
out about it, you know.
Copy !req
416. She was hurt 'cause, you know,
Copy !req
417. they had a nice home,
the family was happy.
Copy !req
418. But then he had this
other life in Atlanta.
Copy !req
419. And then Melanie
became pregnant...
Copy !req
420. and, that's how we
have Brian Junior.
Copy !req
421. After another unexpected
pregnancy outside of
Copy !req
422. their relationship,
Brian and Rochelle split up.
Copy !req
423. Shortly after, Brian purposes to
Copy !req
424. his new girlfriend, Melanie.
Copy !req
425. We went to Vegas and he
put on like a frickin'
Copy !req
426. St. Patrick's Day white tux with
a big 'ol ugly green bowtie.
Copy !req
427. I had a
white dress, mind you,
Copy !req
428. the stripper in a
white dress.
Copy !req
429. And I had a big 'ol
green corsage on,
Copy !req
430. and I loved it,
every second of it.
Copy !req
431. I wouldn't trade
it for the world.
Copy !req
432. Ah, my name is Melanie Pillman.
Copy !req
433. I'm the widow of Brian Pillman.
Copy !req
434. In private, like, he's,
he's just more laid back and
Copy !req
435. sensible acting,
but he's one of the most
Copy !req
436. intelligent men I've ever
met in my life.
Copy !req
437. So well read and he just
excelled at so many things.
Copy !req
438. He was...
he was my soul mate,
Copy !req
439. I mean, I couldn't have picked
a better guy to love...
Copy !req
440. love, than him.
Copy !req
441. His first years with her,
I thought he was very happy.
Copy !req
442. It'd be a big thing,
his Christmas card 'cause
Copy !req
443. it would be him and the wife,
and all these little kids.
Copy !req
444. 'Cause I had my
two kids, you know.
Copy !req
445. He would show up with like
three or four little kids.
Copy !req
446. They all had different mothers.
Copy !req
447. They'd be climbing on him,
he'd be carrying a couple and,
Copy !req
448. one had his legs around
his neck and
Copy !req
449. one is on his shoulder and...
Copy !req
450. he loved those kids.
Copy !req
451. He was counted on,
he was depended on to,
Copy !req
452. to provide.
Copy !req
453. That responsibility is what
pushes you to keep going
Copy !req
454. to work. You have
to provide for your family.
Copy !req
455. Stunning Steve and Flyin' Brian.
Copy !req
456. And, finally, they made
the decision to give the
Copy !req
457. Hollywood Blonds a
big main event match.
Copy !req
458. It was gonna be on a Clash
of Champions and Ric Flair
Copy !req
459. was returning, he was
gonna be involved.
Copy !req
460. And, the rating came in
and it wasn't very good,
Copy !req
461. and they couldn't blame
Flair because
Copy !req
462. he was a big star so,
they put the heat on
Copy !req
463. Brian Pillman and Steve Austin.
Copy !req
464. "Well, the Hollywood Blonds
didn't draw a rating."
Copy !req
465. And that kind of doomed them
there as being featured
Copy !req
466. in a more prominent
capacity going forward.
Copy !req
467. It felt like betrayal.
Copy !req
468. I wish someone would finally
tell me why the company
Copy !req
469. decided to break us up
'cause we started getting
Copy !req
470. over as a viable tag
team that could hold,
Copy !req
471. you know, world
championship belts.
Copy !req
472. We did.
Copy !req
473. We make chicken shit
into chicken salad,
Copy !req
474. and now you want to split
us out with no real
Copy !req
475. clear direction for
either one of us.
Copy !req
476. So, breaking us up
broke my heart.
Copy !req
477. I don't know of any
other talents that have been
Copy !req
478. buried because they
drew a bad rating.
Copy !req
479. At the time, TBS was
drawing a lot of bad ratings,
Copy !req
480. but I think there was probably
somebody that just thought,
Copy !req
481. "I don't want to
use these guys," and
Copy !req
482. they used that as an excuse.
Copy !req
483. How that was handled,
I look back on it today and
Copy !req
484. still shake my head that...
Copy !req
485. we could 'a done better.
Copy !req
486. I would say the period
from 1990 to 1993,
Copy !req
487. it was very
frustrating for Brian.
Copy !req
488. Also, there was some
knowledge early on that
Copy !req
489. his home life was not as
happy as it could be.
Copy !req
490. I felt like my dad allowed
Melanie to run the show.
Copy !req
491. Melanie treated my
mom very poorly.
Copy !req
492. I feel like she was
very jealous of my mother.
Copy !req
493. Melanie didn't like
him talking to her.
Copy !req
494. She didn't like me and my
mother talking to Rochelle.
Copy !req
495. You know, she just, she made
it hard to like her 'cause
Copy !req
496. she just caused trouble.
Copy !req
497. And then, Rochelle took off and
Copy !req
498. didn't tell anybody
where she was.
Copy !req
499. Rochelle is scheduled to
see Brittany for a visit,
Copy !req
500. but she never shows.
Copy !req
501. No one is able to
get a hold of her,
Copy !req
502. resulting in a
missing persons report.
Copy !req
503. Several days later, when
Rochelle finally surfaces,
Copy !req
504. Brian and Melanie
take decisive action.
Copy !req
505. And Brian said -
and I agreed with him,
Copy !req
506. and I shouldn't have, "We
should just file for custody."
Copy !req
507. And, that changed everything.
Copy !req
508. Following the tag team
break up with Steve Austin,
Copy !req
509. Brian's career has stalled,
and the cracks in his
Copy !req
510. family life start to break open,
consuming those around him.
Copy !req
511. The custody battle
started because
Copy !req
512. Melanie didn't want
Rochelle around.
Copy !req
513. Basically, Brian had more
money and could keep the
Copy !req
514. attorneys paid 'cause the
attorneys only work
Copy !req
515. when you pay 'em.
Copy !req
516. And, Rochelle just
didn't have any more money.
Copy !req
517. I was, you know, delivering
stuff to the lawyer.
Copy !req
518. I was bombarding her with
these stupid things about
Copy !req
519. returning past child support
that she blew in...
Copy !req
520. You know, just little minutiae
that was making me feel
Copy !req
521. like a better person,
but in reality,
Copy !req
522. I wasn't the better person.
Copy !req
523. Nobody should try to take
kids away from a mother.
Copy !req
524. I should have never done that.
Copy !req
525. In a million years,
I would never do it again.
Copy !req
526. It just devastated Rochelle.
Copy !req
527. I was outside riding
my bicycle one day.
Copy !req
528. This was at a time when she
wasn't allowed to see me,
Copy !req
529. and she came pulling up and
I just went running to her
Copy !req
530. and I was so happy to see her.
Copy !req
531. Rochelle was hugging her...
Copy !req
532. and they thought
she was taking her.
Copy !req
533. Here comes my dad and
it was just like this
Copy !req
534. huge argument, him pulling
her away from me.
Copy !req
535. Melanie filed kidnapping
charges against Rochelle.
Copy !req
536. And so, my dad had
got full custody of me,
Copy !req
537. and in my mom's mind,
she was just like,
Copy !req
538. I'm gonna lose my daughter
and I'm never gonna
Copy !req
539. see her again, and so...
Copy !req
540. my mom called my dad's house
and she wanted to
Copy !req
541. talk to my dad,
but he was out of town.
Copy !req
542. Melanie had answered
and Melanie told her,
Copy !req
543. she said, "Even your own
mother thinks I would be a
Copy !req
544. better mother for your
daughter than you'll ever be."
Copy !req
545. And my mom called my grandma...
Copy !req
546. She called her mother
and told her mother
Copy !req
547. what she was gonna do...
Copy !req
548. And then she shot herself.
Copy !req
549. I got the call to go to
the hospital 'cause
Copy !req
550. she was being airlifted in,
I was the closest.
Copy !req
551. And I was the one at the
hospital that they told,
Copy !req
552. and then I had to
tell everybody...
Copy !req
553. that she was gone.
She died on the helicopter.
Copy !req
554. So, I had to call her
mother and tell her mother.
Copy !req
555. Oh, it was very hard.
To tell some...
Copy !req
556. To tell somebody's mother
that their child was dead.
Copy !req
557. It just destroyed Brian because
Copy !req
558. he felt so responsible. I mean,
he was just so upset.
Copy !req
559. He cried, and he cried,
and he said,
Copy !req
560. "Do you think it was all
that pressure we put on her?
Copy !req
561. I think it was, Mel."
Copy !req
562. I'd be like, "Yeah,
it probably was."
Copy !req
563. So, Brian, he wanted to pay for
Copy !req
564. her whole funeral
and everything.
Copy !req
565. And, at the funeral,
he held it together...
Copy !req
566. until they closed the casket.
Copy !req
567. And, he lost it.
Copy !req
568. He was hugging me and sobbing.
Copy !req
569. And, in fact, at one point,
I kind of looked at him
Copy !req
570. 'cause I thought he, I thought
he was gonna pass out.
Copy !req
571. He was devastated...
He was devastated.
Copy !req
572. I felt...
Copy !req
573. so guilty for that, for years.
Copy !req
574. And, I think I drove her...
Maybe not just me,
Copy !req
575. but I think incidents
drove her to shoot herself.
Copy !req
576. Rethinking it, I would,
I wouldn't have done it
Copy !req
577. the same way.
Copy !req
578. Nobody should have to
fight for their kid.
Copy !req
579. I mean, it wasn't like
she was abusing her.
Copy !req
580. So, I don't really know what
my problem was back then.
Copy !req
581. It was, it was devastating,
Copy !req
582. and I know it was for Brittany.
Copy !req
583. I have a lot of anger built
up towards my dad in a sense
Copy !req
584. because I do wish that
he would have, you know,
Copy !req
585. allowed my mom
to at least see me because
Copy !req
586. maybe she would
still be here today.
Copy !req
587. I don't, you know, I don't know.
Copy !req
588. She had a lot of issues,
but Melanie was
Copy !req
589. the overall call.
She's,
Copy !req
590. she's an evil person
and she's always been that way.
Copy !req
591. Melanie should have never
said those words to my mom.
Copy !req
592. She's just, she's literally
the devil and they say,
Copy !req
593. you know,
you reap what you sow...
Copy !req
594. and now, she's living a life
that she should have already
Copy !req
595. been dead years ago because
of all the drugs that
Copy !req
596. she's done, but I feel like
she's gonna live to be
Copy !req
597. 100 years old and absolutely
miserable for all the pain and
Copy !req
598. suffering that
she has caused me,
Copy !req
599. and my brother, and you know,
Copy !req
600. my Aunt Linda.
Copy !req
601. And I... And Brittany's the
one that, you know...
Copy !req
602. I don't know how to
make it up to her.
Copy !req
603. I just, there's nothing I...
Copy !req
604. I don't really know how
to make it up to her.
Copy !req
605. I wish I could.
Copy !req
606. The guilt of Rochelle's death
weighs heavily on Brian,
Copy !req
607. and he dives even
deeper into his career.
Copy !req
608. With his contract renewal
with the WCW looming,
Copy !req
609. Brian is determined
to renegotiate
Copy !req
610. for even more money.
Copy !req
611. When we talk business,
it's like, "I have five kids,
Copy !req
612. I don't know how many
more years I can do this
Copy !req
613. because my body's falling apart.
Copy !req
614. I have to make big money now...
Copy !req
615. because I've got five kids!"
Copy !req
616. This was his shot.
Copy !req
617. He talks with Bischoff
that was evidently doing the
Copy !req
618. contracts there, and
Bischoff says to him,
Copy !req
619. "Expect about what
you're getting now."
Copy !req
620. He was pretty happy that
I got him back to 225,
Copy !req
621. but I think he wanted four,
is the number that
Copy !req
622. he was really wanting.
I couldn't give it to him.
Copy !req
623. I couldn't justify it at
the time that he wanted it.
Copy !req
624. He came to me and
he says, "What do I do?"
Copy !req
625. And what I told him was this...
Copy !req
626. It's a question of value.
Copy !req
627. And when everybody's
using everybody else,
Copy !req
628. what can you do that
other people can't do?
Copy !req
629. What can you do
that gains notoriety?
Copy !req
630. This thing runs on attention.
Copy !req
631. It runs on very
superficial things.
Copy !req
632. We gotta create attention.
Copy !req
633. How can we do that in
the position you're in?
Copy !req
634. With his pulse on the
wrestling landscape,
Copy !req
635. Brian knew that he had to
find a way to up the ante
Copy !req
636. in order to shock even
the most hardcore of fans.
Copy !req
637. Brian knew if he could make
people legitimately believe
Copy !req
638. that he was a loose cannon,
that he was nuts,
Copy !req
639. he was off his rocker,
he was capable of
Copy !req
640. doing anything or saying
anything at any time,
Copy !req
641. that he could be one of
the hottest guys
Copy !req
642. in the wrestling industry.
Copy !req
643. It was a pure money deal.
What do we really want?
Copy !req
644. Bischoff to offer you a
hell of a lot more money,
Copy !req
645. and we want Vince McMahon
to see that you are of value
Copy !req
646. and offer you more.
And then you flip a coin.
Copy !req
647. If he could play one side
against the other
Copy !req
648. in the middle of the
burgeoning wrestling war,
Copy !req
649. then he would come
out much better,
Copy !req
650. six figures per year better.
Copy !req
651. And that's what he
set about to do.
Copy !req
652. Brian Pillman's plan was simple:
Copy !req
653. More attention means more money.
Copy !req
654. As the WWF and WCW are
engaged in a ratings battle,
Copy !req
655. Brian exploits this to his
advantage by playing them
Copy !req
656. off each other, while driving
up his own value.
Copy !req
657. Brian came up with the
Loose Cannon idea and
Copy !req
658. started slowly integrating it
into his television appearances.
Copy !req
659. Bobby Heenan was the
colour commentator.
Copy !req
660. Bobby had had a broken neck,
and he'd had surgery,
Copy !req
661. and he was very
protective of his neck and,
Copy !req
662. Brian goes around behind
Bobby and starts
Copy !req
663. grabbing him by the
shoulders and everything
Copy !req
664. and on live television.
Bobby says...
Copy !req
665. What the... are
you doing? Easy!
Copy !req
666. And then Brian knew he got it.
Copy !req
667. He got gold out of it, right,
Copy !req
668. because now everybody's
gonna be talking about
Copy !req
669. the F-bomb that got
dropped on Turner Broadcast.
Copy !req
670. Bobby thought Brian was nuts.
Copy !req
671. I think the Brain has left.
Copy !req
672. It seemed real, to the point
where people were confused
Copy !req
673. whether it was real or not.
Copy !req
674. One of the guys he was
involved with was
Copy !req
675. Kevin Sullivan who was the
booker, the matchmaker.
Copy !req
676. Oh, my goodness!
Copy !req
677. They got a fight going on here!
Copy !req
678. You know, they're just
beating the hell out of
Copy !req
679. each other and when Brian
Pillman was ready to quit,
Copy !req
680. when it was time for
him to leave, he was like...
Copy !req
681. I respect you, booker man.
Copy !req
682. "I respect you, booker man."
Copy !req
683. The mere fact that he was
acknowledging on national
Copy !req
684. television that Kevin
Sullivan was a head writer
Copy !req
685. of a wrestling show was
something that had
Copy !req
686. never been done before.
Copy !req
687. Those that knew, knew.
And those that didn't know,
Copy !req
688. would need to find out what a
booker man meant.
Copy !req
689. It was a big thing because
those guys are sensitive
Copy !req
690. about exposing the business.
Copy !req
691. When you're acting
out a story line,
Copy !req
692. it's considered a work.
Copy !req
693. And, a lot of the boys
backstage weren't really
Copy !req
694. sure this was real or
if this was a work.
Copy !req
695. The wrestling locker rooms
had never been
Copy !req
696. invaded that way before.
Copy !req
697. Because he knew if the other
wrestlers believed it was real,
Copy !req
698. then they would
tell the newsletter editors.
Copy !req
699. "Wow, that
guy's really nuts."
Copy !req
700. And the word would travel.
Copy !req
701. I thought, this is
going down bad.
Copy !req
702. Brian's getting fired.
Copy !req
703. And I'm out of
contact with him anyway,
Copy !req
704. so I think he's completely
lost his mind, you know,
Copy !req
705. he's not even
talking to me anymore.
Copy !req
706. The "smart fans" were
starting to figure out that
Copy !req
707. wrestling is manipulated,
it's choreographed,
Copy !req
708. it's pre-determined, but
that guy's nuts and
Copy !req
709. he's real, and he won't do
what they tell him.
Copy !req
710. And that sells tickets
because you had no idea
Copy !req
711. what or whether it was
supposed to happen or not.
Copy !req
712. He was convincing
people that he was insane.
Copy !req
713. Not only were the
fans ready to be fooled,
Copy !req
714. but all the wrestlers were,
the management people were,
Copy !req
715. there was a whole bunch of
people that you could
Copy !req
716. play like a violin.
Copy !req
717. - Brian, I'd like to know...
- Nervous?
Copy !req
718. No, I'm not nervous.
I'm not nervous at all.
Copy !req
719. You should be.
Copy !req
720. I don't think anybody for sure
at any given moment knew...
Copy !req
721. if or not they were really
being worked by Brian.
Copy !req
722. But then he ended up
working Bischoff.
Copy !req
723. I said, "Get him to give
you some kind of release."
Copy !req
724. From his contract.
"From your contract."
Copy !req
725. Brian says to Eric Bischoff,
"If you fire me,
Copy !req
726. and then I bust out on TV
the week afterwards and
Copy !req
727. people will know this has
just gone out of control."
Copy !req
728. "The people in the office,
the book keepers,
Copy !req
729. whatever, if they see that
I'm still under contract,
Copy !req
730. they're gonna tell Dave.
Copy !req
731. And then everyone's gonna
know that it's all a work.
Copy !req
732. So, you have to
really fire me."
Copy !req
733. "If you give me this
legitimate termination letter,
Copy !req
734. then I can show it
to everybody and I can say,
Copy !req
735. 'Look at what the guy did!
Can you believe this?
Copy !req
736. Can you believe he
fired me?'"
Copy !req
737. He did!
He gave him a release.
Copy !req
738. So, he was then free to
negotiate with Vince McMahon
Copy !req
739. and the WWF against
Eric Bischoff and WCW so
Copy !req
740. he could get a better deal,
all because Bischoff thought
Copy !req
741. he was working with Brian to
create this "illusion" and
Copy !req
742. Brian was actually
working Bischoff
Copy !req
743. to create his own illusion.
Copy !req
744. Dude, I mean...
Copy !req
745. how do you do that?
Copy !req
746. How... I don't know anybody
else that ever did that.
Copy !req
747. Yeah, stroke of genius.
Copy !req
748. I mean, it was a
legitimate termination,
Copy !req
749. but it was a
legitimate termination...
Copy !req
750. with a wink and a nod.
Copy !req
751. I said, "Brian, go to WWF.
Copy !req
752. I can't give you what you want.
Copy !req
753. Get yourself over there so
that when you come back,
Copy !req
754. and I promise you,
I will bring you back,
Copy !req
755. it'll give me the ability to
pay you more 'cause
Copy !req
756. you've raised your own value."
Copy !req
757. In his world, it's his stunt.
Copy !req
758. He is flattered that he's
the guy that's pulling the
Copy !req
759. great stunt, even though he
was the power to begin with!
Copy !req
760. For anyone to suggest...
Copy !req
761. that the Loose Cannon
character was designed to
Copy !req
762. manipulate me into giving
Brian Pillman more money,
Copy !req
763. when in fact, Brian Pillman
and I discussed how to make
Copy !req
764. this character work even
better so that at some point
Copy !req
765. I could give him the money,
it kind of flies in the face
Copy !req
766. of the rumours and the innuendo.
Copy !req
767. Oh, man, that's the
greatest thing you can do.
Copy !req
768. If you can... somebody
over and have them think
Copy !req
769. that it's a great idea,
that's...
Copy !req
770. you know, ha, I mean,
that's the trick of
Copy !req
771. breaking up with a woman,
you know,
Copy !req
772. make her think
that it's her idea.
Copy !req
773. As a free agent,
Brian takes charge of
Copy !req
774. his own appearances
and publicity.
Copy !req
775. His insider knowledge,
mastery of manipulation,
Copy !req
776. and disregard for exposing
the industry solidifies
Copy !req
777. his position as the
ultimate ring master.
Copy !req
778. In the wrestling war
layout at the time,
Copy !req
779. the fans knew one thing:
if you are really working
Copy !req
780. for one promotion, you can't
appear for any of the others.
Copy !req
781. Tonight will be one of
the most extreme hours of
Copy !req
782. wrestling with...
And wait a minute...
Copy !req
783. One of the things with
trying to prove it was real
Copy !req
784. is that WCW hated ECW so,
Copy !req
785. Brian must be on
the outs with WCW.
Copy !req
786. Renegade promotion ECW is
gaining traction for pushing
Copy !req
787. the boundaries of wrestling,
and is the perfect stage for
Copy !req
788. the Loose Cannon's
unpredictable antics.
Copy !req
789. He could curse, he could
say off-colour things.
Copy !req
790. Eric Bischoff is each
and every one
Copy !req
791. of these mother... ing...
Copy !req
792. smart marks rolled up into one
Copy !req
793. giant piece of shit!
Copy !req
794. I thought Brian
was losing his mind,
Copy !req
795. as opposed to being,
you know, brilliant.
Copy !req
796. I loved it. I was just nothing
but entertained by it.
Copy !req
797. Damn near whipped it out and
was gonna piss in the ring...
Copy !req
798. that's a pretty
strong statement.
Copy !req
799. And, pardon my language,
I was like, man,
Copy !req
800. this mother... er's
out there.
Copy !req
801. You know, and I mean
that in a good way.
Copy !req
802. Get him the hell out of here.
Copy !req
803. This stuff was
working on both levels.
Copy !req
804. The fans who weren't inside,
they just thought that
Copy !req
805. he was crazy and he was doing
wild over-the-top things,
Copy !req
806. but for the fans who did
know the inside terminology
Copy !req
807. or were with the secrets,
they were like,
Copy !req
808. they can't be
allowing him to do that.
Copy !req
809. Oh!
Copy !req
810. When he would have a
television appearance,
Copy !req
811. it would be arranged so
that it didn't look like
Copy !req
812. he was supposed to be there.
Copy !req
813. Or, he was doing something
he wasn't supposed to be doing.
Copy !req
814. One time, he even to protest
the matches that he'd
Copy !req
815. been given, he wrestled
a giant pencil because
Copy !req
816. pencil in inside wrestling
knowledge was
Copy !req
817. another name for the booker.
Copy !req
818. I always end up
fighting with the pencil.
Copy !req
819. And then he's showing up
and doing
Copy !req
820. these funny little vignettes.
Copy !req
821. He's got one, he's cooking,
Copy !req
822. and flames are going out
of the frying pan.
Copy !req
823. And they hired a
woman with a baby,
Copy !req
824. and then the guy
comes to punch Pillman,
Copy !req
825. and he grabs the baby and
holds the baby up
Copy !req
826. in front of him.
Copy !req
827. You scum!
You piece of...
Copy !req
828. And I never once
called Brian and said,
Copy !req
829. "Hey, dude, are you working?
Are you shooting?"
Copy !req
830. You know, because I
didn't want to know.
Copy !req
831. But I thought what he was
doing was damn sure brilliant.
Copy !req
832. Some people think my
dad was crazy and then,
Copy !req
833. you know, other people are like,
Copy !req
834. you know, "Your dad was,"
you know, "not crazy.
Copy !req
835. That was just a gimmick."
Copy !req
836. And a lot of people say
he kind of fell into that,
Copy !req
837. like, they couldn't, they
couldn't decipher if it was...
Copy !req
838. Is this Brian Pillman now?
Copy !req
839. Or, you know, like,
is he still in character?
Copy !req
840. Or is this just how he is?
Copy !req
841. It's all just their
perception of reality.
Copy !req
842. It was just like this,
this blur between,
Copy !req
843. like, what is actually going on?
Copy !req
844. Like, you don't
even know anymore,
Copy !req
845. but that was,
like, the magic of it.
Copy !req
846. There was a lot of
Andy Kaufman in, in Brian.
Copy !req
847. The Loose Cannon became Brian,
Copy !req
848. that was who he was.
Copy !req
849. Brian was a renegade.
Copy !req
850. Brian was a little
bit of an outlaw.
Copy !req
851. Again, remember, when you're
not the biggest dog
Copy !req
852. of the litter, and you got
that gravelly voice...
Copy !req
853. you've had 30, plus,
throat operations
Copy !req
854. when you're a small child,
you get an attitude.
Copy !req
855. I said this many times,
the greatest wrestlers
Copy !req
856. I've ever worked with are
essentially natural,
Copy !req
857. organic extensions of
their own personality.
Copy !req
858. And the Loose Cannon
was just that.
Copy !req
859. I think the message that
Brian showing up at ECW
Copy !req
860. sent to the other
two companies is,
Copy !req
861. he was a free agent, that
he was a gun slinger and
Copy !req
862. he'd go to the highest bidder.
Copy !req
863. Vince is watching.
Copy !req
864. It's the hottest
thing in wrestling.
Copy !req
865. The only one that really
knew what was going on
Copy !req
866. was Dave Meltzer. I said, "Hey,
we have to tell Meltzer."
Copy !req
867. I value his friendship more
than I value...
Copy !req
868. You know, any of this shit.
Copy !req
869. Something happened
and I called up Kim,
Copy !req
870. and I go, "Oh, god,
Brian's... Brian's in trouble."
Copy !req
871. He just goes, you know,
like, "Brian...
Copy !req
872. you know, Brian's doing this.
Copy !req
873. He's, he's come up
with a character,
Copy !req
874. and he's... you gotta
work everybody."
Copy !req
875. And Brian goes,
"What do I do with Dave?"
Copy !req
876. And he goes, "You don't
talk to Dave because
Copy !req
877. if you tell him,
Copy !req
878. then he's gonna have to say it
because that's his role.
Copy !req
879. And, I don't want
you lying to him."
Copy !req
880. So, literally, like,
he didn't talk to me for
Copy !req
881. a couple months there.
Oh, yeah, without a doubt,
Copy !req
882. he wanted to fool me with
the character.
Copy !req
883. And he did for a while.
Copy !req
884. And again,
who are the real marks?
Copy !req
885. Who are the ultimate marks?
Bischoff, and then we got Vince.
Copy !req
886. Vince McMahon was then
as he is now the
Copy !req
887. undisputed leader, ruler,
manipulator, organizer,
Copy !req
888. and owner of World
Wrestling Entertainment.
Copy !req
889. - Vince?
- Yeah, you.
Copy !req
890. Yeah, what do you... You know
what you do with a whore?
Copy !req
891. You... 'em.
Copy !req
892. That's, that's what
I thought of Vince,
Copy !req
893. that's how I think of Vince.
Copy !req
894. As Brian becomes the talk
of the wrestling world,
Copy !req
895. it's time for the final step
of his master plan:
Copy !req
896. track down and
secure the attention
Copy !req
897. of wrestling's biggest
power player.
Copy !req
898. In perhaps his
boldest stunt yet,
Copy !req
899. Brian Pillman plots to
get the attention of
Copy !req
900. Vince McMahon at an insider
industry tradeshow in
Copy !req
901. Las Vegas, the last place
anyone would expect
Copy !req
902. to see the Loose Cannon.
Copy !req
903. Okay, so I'm in Vegas.
Copy !req
904. I was in there and
I was leaving and,
Copy !req
905. Brian's coming and Brian's
in full gimmick at this point.
Copy !req
906. And then, I see him,
"Hey, Dave." Whatever.
Copy !req
907. I'm leaving, he goes,
"Can I get your credential?"
Copy !req
908. And I go, "Yeah, here.
Here's my credential."
Copy !req
909. And he went in and
makes a beeline for
Copy !req
910. Jim Ross and Vince McMahon.
Copy !req
911. He had an idea to be
the most outrageous,
Copy !req
912. outlandish, over-the-top
character that
Copy !req
913. Vince McMahon had ever met.
Copy !req
914. He's gonna try to get
Vince McMahon's attention.
Copy !req
915. Doing his whole Brian Pillman,
Copy !req
916. "Hey, Vince, ah-dah-dah,
hey, let's take a picture!"
Copy !req
917. "Vince McMahon!
Mother... er! God almighty!"
Copy !req
918. "It's the greatest thing
in the world
Copy !req
919. I got a chance to meet ya!
Can I get the arm around..."
Copy !req
920. Somebody takes a picture.
Copy !req
921. And Vince is like,
"Who is this guy?"
Copy !req
922. He made an impression.
Copy !req
923. You didn't know whether he
was a homicidal maniac or
Copy !req
924. just a guy that was having fun.
Copy !req
925. McMahon thought, "We can't
hire this guy, JR.
Copy !req
926. We can't hire this guy, JR.
He's crazy."
Copy !req
927. I said, "He's crazy like a fox."
"What do you mean?"
Copy !req
928. "Well, he told me
what he was gonna do."
Copy !req
929. "He did?"
"Yeah, he's creative.
Copy !req
930. He's bold. He's kind of
like you are, Vince.
Copy !req
931. He'll take a chance."
Copy !req
932. Brian's balls at that
point and that day,
Copy !req
933. would probably fit
in a wheelbarrow.
Copy !req
934. And dude, you work
Vince McMahon, you know,
Copy !req
935. especially back in the day,
pretty good rib.
Copy !req
936. And got his attention, too.
Copy !req
937. It was, it was
pretty frickin' genius,
Copy !req
938. what he was doing.
Copy !req
939. But, but, he wanted to stay
in WCW 'cause
Copy !req
940. WWF didn't offer
guaranteed money.
Copy !req
941. And also, Vince was always
pushing the bigger guys so,
Copy !req
942. Brian always felt that
WCW was his company and
Copy !req
943. the company he would do
the best in anyway.
Copy !req
944. People go, like, "Oh,
"he did this manipulation
Copy !req
945. of his contract to go to WWF."
Copy !req
946. No, he did the manipulation
of his contract to be able
Copy !req
947. to negotiate with WWF to
raise his money with WCW.
Copy !req
948. Brian's bold plan is
a success as he is in
Copy !req
949. negotiations for major
contracts with both
Copy !req
950. WCW and WWF.
Copy !req
951. All he has to do is
choose the right path.
Copy !req
952. No, it's money!
Copy !req
953. That's the
bottom ... ing line!
Copy !req
954. It's money!
Copy !req
955. And these people
are in fantasy land.
Copy !req
956. And it's money.
Copy !req
957. The only problem is...
Copy !req
958. like the Hebrew saying,
Copy !req
959. "Man plans and God laughs".
Copy !req
960. We're talking and it's
always about, you know,
Copy !req
961. "I gotta save money,
I gotta save money,"
Copy !req
962. and then he buys an
$80,000 Humvee.
Copy !req
963. I couldn't fathom the idea of,
Copy !req
964. I've got 5 kids, I've gotta
make money now,
Copy !req
965. I've gotta save money,
and then buying a Humvee.
Copy !req
966. God.
Copy !req
967. He would drive that wherever
Brian wanted to drive that.
Copy !req
968. He didn't want to
sit at the stop light,
Copy !req
969. he drove down a gully and
up the other side
Copy !req
970. in that Hummer.
Copy !req
971. He didn't, you know,
follow the rules.
Copy !req
972. I was actually in Miami,
modeling,
Copy !req
973. but I called to
check on the kids and,
Copy !req
974. the neighbour across the street,
Copy !req
975. I called her 'cause I
didn't get an answer,
Copy !req
976. and she said, "My God, I just
passed the Hummer and
Copy !req
977. little Brian's car seat's
out in the middle of the yard
Copy !req
978. and big Brian's being flown
to the hospital."
Copy !req
979. I remember he
flippedit, rolled it.
Copy !req
980. It was severe.
Copy !req
981. The wreck happened
during the negotiations.
Copy !req
982. They're getting damaged goods.
Copy !req
983. It was truly the deal of,
you can get on the
Copy !req
984. tiger's back, but how
do you get off?
Copy !req
985. Fate figured that out.
Copy !req
986. There'd been a lot
of wrestler deaths,
Copy !req
987. but not of a guy who was
actually on the way to
Copy !req
988. the show at that moment.
Copy !req
989. It's like if Brian could
just see the future and
Copy !req
990. what happened,
Brian would have just,
Copy !req
991. "..., oh my god.
No drugs, no nothing."
Copy !req
992. I know it would have
scared him straight.
Copy !req
993. It's crazy how you go
from having a silver platter
Copy !req
994. growing up to not even knowing
Copy !req
995. when your next meal
is going to be.
Copy !req
