1. They had the look,
they had that power.
Copy !req
2. They had put it
all together.
Copy !req
3. It was a total package.
Copy !req
4. The face paint,
the shoulder pads, and...
Copy !req
5. jacked to the sky.
Copy !req
6. Man, they
trained their asses off.
Copy !req
7. I mean, they hit the
ring like badasses.
Copy !req
8. We were two badasses
trying to be wrestlers.
Copy !req
9. They were wrestlers
trying to be badasses.
Copy !req
10. They were just like
the guys in Mad Max.
Copy !req
11. I mean, they were meaner
than the guys in Mad Max.
Copy !req
12. In the history of
professional wrestling,
Copy !req
13. no duo has dominated the
ring like Hawk and Animal:
Copy !req
14. The Road Warriors.
Copy !req
15. When we'd go to Japan,
they were like Godzilla.
Copy !req
16. You look at them and
you went, "Holy shit.
Copy !req
17. I hope they don't kill me."
Copy !req
18. They were
legitimate tough guys.
Copy !req
19. They clawed their
way to the top,
Copy !req
20. becoming one of wrestling's
biggest attractions.
Copy !req
21. But an unrelenting
lifestyle for one,
Copy !req
22. ultimately led to
their downfall.
Copy !req
23. He partied hard,
played hard. He lived hard.
Copy !req
24. Whoa!
Copy !req
25. That switch would flip
after the match, and bam!
Copy !req
26. I woke up this morning...
Copy !req
27. this is where I felt sick!
Copy !req
28. It becomes a way out,
as well as an escape.
Copy !req
29. You'll feel like you wanna be
dead when we're done with you!
Copy !req
30. The road can eat you alive.
Copy !req
31. At the age of 46,
Road Warrior, Hawk,
Copy !req
32. unexpectedly passed away of
a suspected heart attack.
Copy !req
33. I literally cried
like a baby.
Copy !req
34. I mean, that was my friend.
Copy !req
35. I've been through hell
and back with this guy.
Copy !req
36. What a rush!
Copy !req
37. The art of
tag team wrestling
Copy !req
38. engages fans in a dynamic,
far more complex way
Copy !req
39. than one-on-one matches.
Copy !req
40. The greatest tag team duos in
history share a 6th sense,
Copy !req
41. operating as
two halves of one whole.
Copy !req
42. There's no one
without the other.
Copy !req
43. And no team proves that more
than Mike "Hawk" Hegstrand
Copy !req
44. and Joe "Animal" Laurinaitus.
Copy !req
45. In an era dominated by
iconic personalities...
Copy !req
46. Just what exactly goes through
the Road Warriors' mind!
Copy !req
47. Whose singles matches
were the star attraction,
Copy !req
48. The Road Warriors would break
the mold as comic book heroes
Copy !req
49. come to life and
post-apocalyptic warriors
Copy !req
50. beyond the realms of earth.
Copy !req
51. The most important
thing to us
Copy !req
52. has always been
beating people up!
Copy !req
53. Their larger than life
personas propelled them to
Copy !req
54. main event status
around the world,
Copy !req
55. winning titles
wherever they went.
Copy !req
56. But the price for
success is often high,
Copy !req
57. and in this episode,
we reveal the heavy cost
Copy !req
58. paid by both men, and how
their wrestling brotherhood
Copy !req
59. met its heartbreaking end.
Copy !req
60. I think tag team wrestling's
the most interesting part of
Copy !req
61. the wrestling business.
Tag team wrestling is an art.
Copy !req
62. It's a 4-person
athletic dance.
Copy !req
63. I'm Road Warrior, Animal,
one half of the greatest
Copy !req
64. tag team ever in the history
of professional wrestling,
Copy !req
65. The Road Warriors.
Copy !req
66. There's more of a story told
with the tag team
Copy !req
67. than there is with the single.
Copy !req
68. You can't just put two guys
together and make 'em a tag.
Copy !req
69. You have to have two guys
that really know each other.
Copy !req
70. My name is Barry Darsow.
Copy !req
71. I was The Repo Man,
and Demolition Smash.
Copy !req
72. And, I always thought we
had incredible matches
Copy !req
73. with The Road Warriors.
Copy !req
74. What made The Road Warriors
successful was that
Copy !req
75. they're two guys that
really clicked.
Copy !req
76. Everybody believed that
they could beat anybody,
Copy !req
77. and they looked incredible.
Copy !req
78. I saw the "It".
Copy !req
79. These two have
the "It" factor.
Copy !req
80. Paul Ellering, Manager
of The Road Warriors
Copy !req
81. for 20-something years.
Copy !req
82. The Road Warriors, it's a
group that comes along
Copy !req
83. once in every generation.
Copy !req
84. And they're always copied,
never duplicated.
Copy !req
85. Hawk and Animal
are just two,
Copy !req
86. no-nonsense badasses.
Copy !req
87. Hawk was the
off-the-wall flier guy,
Copy !req
88. and Animal was like...
Copy !req
89. the buck stops here.
Copy !req
90. Most teams had one big guy
and one little guy.
Copy !req
91. Here, you got two
fricking monsters.
Copy !req
92. They could do
things in the ring that,
Copy !req
93. prior to them,
big guys didn't do.
Copy !req
94. I'm Nikita Koloff.
Not from Russia,
Copy !req
95. although that's what I
portrayed for many years
Copy !req
96. in the
wrestling business.
Copy !req
97. It was the
chemistry of tag team,
Copy !req
98. picking the guy up
on the shoulder,
Copy !req
99. coming off the top rope.
Copy !req
100. The Doomsday, you know,
Copy !req
101. he flew off of the top
turnbuckle and that was
Copy !req
102. the ultimate finish in
wrestling for decades.
Copy !req
103. They knew what each other
one was thinking all the time.
Copy !req
104. But sometimes, Animal knew
more than Hawk as far as...
Copy !req
105. what was going on.
Copy !req
106. Again, you hear
some of the stories, right,
Copy !req
107. of how Mike would
snap in an instant or
Copy !req
108. fly off the handle.
Copy !req
109. Oh, yeah, man.
We got along instantly.
Copy !req
110. I was like 18 year's old.
Copy !req
111. And, I knew of
Mike Hegstrand,
Copy !req
112. known as a loose cannon,
tough guy.
Copy !req
113. In 1977, Mike Hegstrand and
Joe Laurinaitus are two kids
Copy !req
114. growing up on the streets
of Northeast Minneapolis,
Copy !req
115. a tough,
working-class neighborhood.
Copy !req
116. You know, I was...
Copy !req
117. at Jesse "The Body"
Ventura's gym.
Copy !req
118. And I'm sitting there,
and I'm doing inclines,
Copy !req
119. and I got like 315 pounds on
the bar and, all of a sudden,
Copy !req
120. in the middle of my set,
I get this, "whack!"
Copy !req
121. on my chest.
This big, fat palm print.
Copy !req
122. And he goes,
"Laurinaitus, you ain't right.
Copy !req
123. You should be lifting
more weights than me".
Copy !req
124. That was my meeting
with Mike Hegstrand.
Copy !req
125. This is a great
school photo of Mike,
Copy !req
126. and he was voted
class bully.
Copy !req
127. Yeah,
you can see it there.
Copy !req
128. I think that was,
that was staged, but...
Copy !req
129. Mike's reputation
in school was a scrapper.
Copy !req
130. His idea of a good time
was to go beat up someone...
Copy !req
131. Just stay away from him,
he'll be a great friend to ya...
Copy !req
132. But, don't cross him.
Copy !req
133. I'm Rich Hegstrand,
Mike's older brother.
Copy !req
134. And I'm Dan Hegstrand.
I was...
Copy !req
135. 4 years younger than Mike.
Copy !req
136. Mike was a lost soul
as far as,
Copy !req
137. "What am I gonna do,"
and everything.
Copy !req
138. And, our mom
had passed away. Ah...
Copy !req
139. Come on, bro.
You can do it.
Copy !req
140. Ah... But, he obviously
found his way,
Copy !req
141. but it was a bit of
a road to get there.
Copy !req
142. He was hyperactive.
He didn't sit still, you know.
Copy !req
143. If he was sitting still, his leg
was bouncing up and down, and...
Copy !req
144. you know, he was—
he had a lot of energy to...
Copy !req
145. lift weights
and punch people.
Copy !req
146. Yeah.
Copy !req
147. The way we put it is, I'm from
the other side of the tracks
Copy !req
148. and Hawk was pretty
much the toughest guy
Copy !req
149. on his side of the tracks,
and I was pretty much
Copy !req
150. the toughest guy on
my side of the tracks.
Copy !req
151. My name is Scott Norton.
Copy !req
152. Professional Wrestler from
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Copy !req
153. I grew up with
Mike Hegstrand,
Copy !req
154. known as Hawk.
He was gonna,
Copy !req
155. kind of like, mark his
territory in each school,
Copy !req
156. so he got into a
little brawl with a guy from
Copy !req
157. south high school and
knocked his ass out.
Copy !req
158. Got into one with the guy
from north high school,
Copy !req
159. knocked him out.
Went to west, same thing.
Copy !req
160. And he would
condition himself.
Copy !req
161. He would punch
himself in the face,
Copy !req
162. and I mean,
it wasn't just a...
Copy !req
163. I don't even want to
hit my hand that hard.
Copy !req
164. Fractures between
each one of his teeth.
Copy !req
165. You know,
basically broke his face.
Copy !req
166. Their hard-hitting lifestyle
growing up in
Copy !req
167. northeast Minneapolis
would serve as a
Copy !req
168. training ground for their
careers in the ring.
Copy !req
169. And their circle of friends
soon expands to include
Copy !req
170. a massively talented
roster of future superstars.
Copy !req
171. Pretty interesting that
Minneapolis was just a
Copy !req
172. mecca of guys who ended
up in the crazy,
Copy !req
173. whacky world of
professional wrestling.
Copy !req
174. Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig,
The Road Warriors,
Copy !req
175. and John Nord, and...
Barry Darsow.
Copy !req
176. Ah, Nikita Koloff.
Rick Rude.
Copy !req
177. Scott Norton, too,
right around the same time.
Copy !req
178. We all knew of each other.
Copy !req
179. We got closer as Hawk would
ask me to fill in working at
Copy !req
180. this bar, Granmma B's,
down in Minneapolis.
Copy !req
181. It's at one of Minneapolis'
toughest bars that
Copy !req
182. Joe and Mike get a
chance to cut their teeth.
Copy !req
183. Paid the bills and it was
Copy !req
184. a perfect outlet for him,
I guess you might say.
Copy !req
185. Just 'cause he could beat
up people and
Copy !req
186. get paid for it,
you know.
Copy !req
187. I mean, it was just
like wrestling, so...
Copy !req
188. I can't mention any names,
but the guy that used to
Copy !req
189. own the bar we used
to bounce at,
Copy !req
190. he dealt in coke and when
someone owed him
Copy !req
191. a lot of money,
he'd say, "Hey, man,
Copy !req
192. you need to go have a
conversation with this guy."
Copy !req
193. I remember one time,
you know,
Copy !req
194. Hawk had one leg,
I had one leg of the guy,
Copy !req
195. and then we were hanging him
over the Franklin Avenue Bridge
Copy !req
196. here in Minneapolis
and said, "Listen, man.
Copy !req
197. You need to
frigging pay up."
Copy !req
198. At Granmma B's, there was a
strip bar in the afternoon.
Copy !req
199. And then they'd always have
wet t-shirt contests and
Copy !req
200. everything so, I mean,
it brought some of
Copy !req
201. the worst of the worst guys.
Copy !req
202. Every night,
something happened.
Copy !req
203. Lo and behold, the bartender
was Ed Sharkey.
Copy !req
204. I had heard of Ed Sharkey
before because he wrestled
Copy !req
205. for Verne Gagne in the AWA,
and he comes up to us and
Copy !req
206. he goes, "Hey, I'm gonna
do a wrestling school.
Copy !req
207. You guys wanna do it?"
Copy !req
208. And, we all looked
at each other, said,
Copy !req
209. "Ah, man, I don't
know if I want to do that."
Copy !req
210. And I'm thinking to myself,
"Well, what can it hurt?"
Copy !req
211. My name is Eddie Sharkey.
Copy !req
212. I've been in the
wrestling business for,
Copy !req
213. well, most of my life.
Copy !req
214. Starting on a carnival,
I've been a
Copy !req
215. professional wrestler, referee,
promoter, trainer.
Copy !req
216. I've done just
about everything.
Copy !req
217. Eddie ended up having a
church in northeast Minneapolis
Copy !req
218. and, he had a
boxing ring downstairs.
Copy !req
219. Eddie was a character.
Copy !req
220. He'd sit down
there and he'd go,
Copy !req
221. "Yeah, guys, good tackle,"
you know,
Copy !req
222. "good drop kick,"
or good whatever.
Copy !req
223. But Eddie really—
never got out of his chair.
Copy !req
224. Well, you know, if I would
leave the room or something,
Copy !req
225. I said, "No, don't
try a suplex," or...
Copy !req
226. I mean, you know,
"You're gonna hurt yourself."
Copy !req
227. And, I'd walk out of the
room for whatever reason and
Copy !req
228. the one's got the
other up in the air,
Copy !req
229. and oh, my goodness.
Copy !req
230. Ed never showed us how to
throw what they call today
Copy !req
231. a "working punch".
Copy !req
232. So, we would literally
back up and go, bam!
Copy !req
233. You know, and
punch each other.
Copy !req
234. Nose would be broken
and bleeding like crazy.
Copy !req
235. Eddie never really
smartened us up on exactly
Copy !req
236. what was going on until
after a while,
Copy !req
237. he says, you know,
"Well, here's what you do."
Copy !req
238. Eddie soon realizes that this
promising crop of talent
Copy !req
239. might have a future
in the squared circle.
Copy !req
240. Ole Anderson was a
very, very good wrestler.
Copy !req
241. Another Minnesota guy.
And he became a promoter.
Copy !req
242. He worked for Ted Turner
so, he was the main guy.
Copy !req
243. And, he came up
to Gramma B's.
Copy !req
244. One night, some guy
was misbehaving and
Copy !req
245. I had to escort him out.
Copy !req
246. Well, I had one hand behind
his collar and one hand on
Copy !req
247. his belt loop, and I threw
him through the front door.
Copy !req
248. And, we had this
trip wire outside.
Copy !req
249. And, we used to gauge each
other by how many flips
Copy !req
250. a guy could do
around this wire.
Copy !req
251. And when the guy
gets down flipping,
Copy !req
252. he lands right one
Ole Anderson's shoes.
Copy !req
253. And alls I did was say,
"Hey, how you doing?"
Copy !req
254. Then I turn around,
went back in the bar.
Copy !req
255. Next thing you know, Ole
brings me down to Atlanta.
Copy !req
256. While Ole recruits Joe to work
in his Georgia territory,
Copy !req
257. his future tag team
partner has already been
Copy !req
258. scouted by
another promotion.
Copy !req
259. Mike started first for
Al Tomko, up in Canada.
Copy !req
260. Now, you men up there
that are married to some
Copy !req
261. good-looking wife, you know,
when your wife takes
Copy !req
262. a look at this man,
she's gonna go crazy!
Copy !req
263. I went down for Ole Anderson
as The Road Warrior,
Copy !req
264. singularly, by myself.
Copy !req
265. I looked like a giant version
of The Village People.
Copy !req
266. Now, keep in mind, when Joe
broke into the business
Copy !req
267. he had got his
girlfriend pregnant.
Copy !req
268. And, Joe did
the right thing,
Copy !req
269. and by that,
meaning, he got married...
Copy !req
270. and, 'cause he wanted to,
you know, raise his child.
Copy !req
271. You know, I was sending
all my money that
Copy !req
272. I was making back home.
Copy !req
273. I was wrestling
9 times a week,
Copy !req
274. making $150 total.
Copy !req
275. You know, I lost 50 pounds
of body weight.
Copy !req
276. I said, "I can't
live off this."
Copy !req
277. And Mike's experience wasn't
that great up in Vancouver.
Copy !req
278. So, we both came
back to Minnesota.
Copy !req
279. I actually could make more
money in one night bouncing
Copy !req
280. than I was making
working there in two weeks.
Copy !req
281. Ole Anderson came back
into the bar and Ed Sharkey
Copy !req
282. showed him a picture that Mike
had taken up in Vancouver.
Copy !req
283. Ole thought it was
a picture of me.
Copy !req
284. Eddie Sharkey goes, "No,
that's not Joe. That's Mike."
Copy !req
285. And Ole goes,
"There's two of these guys?"
Copy !req
286. "Joe and Mike,
you're a tag team.
Copy !req
287. Be in Atlanta next week."
Copy !req
288. He goes, "Son of a bitch,"
and then Ole called me up
Copy !req
289. and said, "Hey, I want to
bring you guys in
Copy !req
290. as The Road Warriors."
Copy !req
291. From rough and
tumble beginnings in the
Copy !req
292. Minneapolis bar scene,
Joe and Mike are about to be
Copy !req
293. catapulted into super
stardom and eventually
Copy !req
294. towards their own undoing.
Copy !req
295. In 1983, Joe Laurinaitis and
Mike Hegstrand are recruited
Copy !req
296. to wrestle in Georgia,
except this time as a tag team.
Copy !req
297. They have no idea they're
about revolutionize
Copy !req
298. the world of wrestling.
Copy !req
299. Hawk, thanks for spending
a few moments with us.
Copy !req
300. What got you
started in wrestling?
Copy !req
301. I just started watching it
one time and I thought
Copy !req
302. if they could, I could do it
better and first time we
Copy !req
303. appeared together
on TV, you know,
Copy !req
304. we were both real green.
Copy !req
305. And The Road
Warriors moving up.
Copy !req
306. The start of The Road
Warriors on TV was like
Copy !req
307. surreal for Hawk and I
because it was like,
Copy !req
308. man, here's all these
megastars in
Copy !req
309. Georgia Championship Wrestling.
Copy !req
310. There's Sergeant Slaughter
and there's Tito Santana,
Copy !req
311. and there's Dusty Rhodes,
and I'm going,
Copy !req
312. holy crap, there's some
major superstars here.
Copy !req
313. And then, here we are,
now we're a part of this.
Copy !req
314. Upon their arrival
in the territory,
Copy !req
315. matchmaker Ole Anderson
approaches his new tag team
Copy !req
316. with a bold, new idea.
Copy !req
317. They actually handed
us the belts when we
Copy !req
318. got at the TV station.
They say, "Here's your belt.
Copy !req
319. Here's your belt."
And we're going,
Copy !req
320. "Where do we say we won 'em?"
They said,
Copy !req
321. "Ah, say you won 'em in a tag
team tournament in Chicago."
Copy !req
322. From Chicago!
Copy !req
323. Ole says, "This is gonna
be the new tag team and
Copy !req
324. they're Minnesota boys like you.
Take care of 'em."
Copy !req
325. The names, they both
came up with themselves.
Copy !req
326. I think Ole pointed at me, says,
"You look like an Animal.
Copy !req
327. And then, he said to Hawk,
"You look like—"
Copy !req
328. I forget what he said, but Hawk
says, "I think I'm a Hawk."
Copy !req
329. So, it became
Animal and Hawk.
Copy !req
330. After their very
first match together,
Copy !req
331. newly crowned champions
Hawk and Animal
Copy !req
332. soon join forces
with Paul Ellering.
Copy !req
333. He acts as both their on
and off-screen manager,
Copy !req
334. leading them to
the big leagues.
Copy !req
335. So, I just took 'em
from that day one.
Copy !req
336. They jumped in my van,
and that was it.
Copy !req
337. Paul was, was great at,
at fine tuning us.
Copy !req
338. You know, he...
Copy !req
339. he said go with what your,
your raw strength.
Copy !req
340. Go with what you do best.
Copy !req
341. We used to sit
there at Denny's,
Copy !req
342. and Paul would take the
time to draw on a napkin.
Copy !req
343. "Animal, you're here.
Hawk, you're here.
Copy !req
344. Throw this guy into this
rope after you make the tag.
Copy !req
345. Hawk, you drop down.
Let's incorporate that in."
Copy !req
346. We had the motorcycle boots
and everything, you know,
Copy !req
347. and that's what
we wore down to the ring.
Copy !req
348. After about a month,
Ole goes,
Copy !req
349. "Hey, we got an
idea for you guys.
Copy !req
350. Remember the heel guy in the
Road Warrior movie that had
Copy !req
351. the red mohawk and
the feather in his ear?
Copy !req
352. Well, we want you to try and do
something with the face paint."
Copy !req
353. And that became an
evolution because the early
Copy !req
354. face paint was, you know, like a
black eye or something.
Copy !req
355. But we were trying
different things at that time to
Copy !req
356. try to get a painting of
expressing the way we feel,
Copy !req
357. and Mike Hegstrand goes,
"Hey, I got another idea.
Copy !req
358. What if Animal shaves his hair
into a mohawk to look like
Copy !req
359. the guy in the movie?
I'll shave my head in a
Copy !req
360. double mohawk so
when Animal bends over and
Copy !req
361. I bend over,
we plug our heads in,
Copy !req
362. it looks like one unit."
Copy !req
363. You know,
that came from Animal.
Copy !req
364. That was his idea.
Copy !req
365. And, it was genius,
on his part.
Copy !req
366. I had a friend of mine
that worked for Honeywell.
Copy !req
367. He milled me some spikes.
I said, "Listen, man.
Copy !req
368. I need some 6-inch spikes,
I want some 4-inch spikes,
Copy !req
369. some 2-inch spikes, and I
sat in my garage with my drill
Copy !req
370. and I drilled holes
in those shoulder pads."
Copy !req
371. Licking my thumb,
like, fricking...
Copy !req
372. Picasso, right.
Copy !req
373. Then I put some
chains on them,
Copy !req
374. and that was the birth of
The Road Warrior shoulder pads.
Copy !req
375. They put 'em on and it was
just frosting on the cake.
Copy !req
376. And, you know,
the people just ate it up.
Copy !req
377. These poor guys
they're working against.
Copy !req
378. I mean,
they ran people over.
Copy !req
379. Hawk used to apologize to
them in the back:
Copy !req
380. "I'm sorry for what's gonna
happen to you, pal,
Copy !req
381. but your ass is getting
kicked."
Copy !req
382. They were bad boys,
but when they were bad,
Copy !req
383. they were very good.
Copy !req
384. Man, as long as we stayed
away from the guy's nuts and
Copy !req
385. we didn't break their nose
or anything, it was cool.
Copy !req
386. But, if you look back, man,
some of those clothes lines
Copy !req
387. we hit guys with, guys were
doing natural flips
Copy !req
388. we were hittin' 'em so hard.
Copy !req
389. As cable was spreading
across the country,
Copy !req
390. it was creating
a revolution...
Copy !req
391. in the wrestling business.
Copy !req
392. Unlike other promotions
in the early 1980s,
Copy !req
393. Georgia's World Championship
Wrestling enjoys a
Copy !req
394. prime-time spot
on Atlanta's TBS,
Copy !req
395. the first TV station to be
broadcast across the entire USA.
Copy !req
396. I told the guys,
I think it was '84.
Copy !req
397. I said, "We can
work the whole world.
Copy !req
398. We'll just make it
our territory."
Copy !req
399. Paul would book us in the
AWA or he would book us
Copy !req
400. for the Rougeau's, up in Canada.
Copy !req
401. Go to Puerto Rico
for Carlos Colon,
Copy !req
402. and then go to the NWA.
Copy !req
403. And then, you know, we were
going all over the world,
Copy !req
404. not tied to any one company.
Copy !req
405. Paul's very instrumental in,
Copy !req
406. in not letting the promoters
manipulate us.
Copy !req
407. We were one of the few tag
teams that were main events
Copy !req
408. every night in the arena.
Copy !req
409. We never stayed any one
place and it kept us fresh.
Copy !req
410. And it was always good
because they bring us in,
Copy !req
411. and the place would fill up.
Copy !req
412. Everybody in the
business recognized
Copy !req
413. that Road Warrior pop.
Just loud.
Copy !req
414. I've lost all my hearing.
Copy !req
415. Even today, if someone gets
a good cheer going down
Copy !req
416. to the match, it's called
The Road Warrior Pop.
Copy !req
417. You know, first trip to Japan,
we got there,
Copy !req
418. we get off the flight...
We gotta do an interview.
Copy !req
419. In this room was literally
150 photographers and
Copy !req
420. reporters from all over
the country of Japan.
Copy !req
421. They said there was more
reporters there than when
Copy !req
422. Michael Jackson
came over to Japan.
Copy !req
423. We will fight tonight like we
will never have fought before!
Copy !req
424. Well, Japan wanted us and,
the Japanese people
Copy !req
425. always like to be scared.
Copy !req
426. You know, we're entertainers
as well as wrestlers.
Copy !req
427. Hey, you guys hungry?
Copy !req
428. You know, the Japanese
responded to us because
Copy !req
429. we were so far
ahead of our time.
Copy !req
430. We were so nothing like
the Japanese wrestlers.
Copy !req
431. We don't care who it is.
Copy !req
432. We're gonna stop
everybody in the country.
Copy !req
433. I mean, we wrestled
some top guys, man,
Copy !req
434. you know, Killer Khan...
Copy !req
435. When I pressed Killer Khan,
Japanese people were like,
Copy !req
436. Like, "I can't believe it!"
Copy !req
437. Killer Khan was
6"3, 6"4, 365 pounds.
Copy !req
438. I press landed him
over my head.
Copy !req
439. Then I gorilla slammed
him down.
Copy !req
440. It was national news.
Copy !req
441. It was no secret that,
you know, Mike liked to party.
Copy !req
442. Partied hard, ran hard.
Copy !req
443. There was nothing
he was afraid of.
Copy !req
444. No situation bothered him.
Copy !req
445. Mike got involved
with these people,
Copy !req
446. the Japanese
mafia over there.
Copy !req
447. They would pick him up and
he would go out to
Copy !req
448. dinner with them, and
next thing you know,
Copy !req
449. you wouldn't see
him for two days.
Copy !req
450. He'd meet Japanese
mafia over there and,
Copy !req
451. he'd tell me about, if you
made a mistake over there,
Copy !req
452. they just took a digit
off of your fingers.
Copy !req
453. And he'd come home
with just stacks of $100 bills,
Copy !req
454. which he declared.
Copy !req
455. I think Joe was more the
guy that would rather,
Copy !req
456. you know, go out to
dinner and, go to the room,
Copy !req
457. and get some sleep so
you can get up and
Copy !req
458. have a great
workout the next day.
Copy !req
459. Where Hawk, he was wild,
Copy !req
460. he wanted to go out to the bar,
he wanted to do this.
Copy !req
461. He had no shut off
valve to it, man.
Copy !req
462. It was just like...
Copy !req
463. go, 100 miles an hour,
all the time.
Copy !req
464. That's when it started
hitting a nerve with me.
Copy !req
465. By 1986, The Road Warriors
have become one of the
Copy !req
466. top wrestling
attractions in the world.
Copy !req
467. To be that good in that
many different territories,
Copy !req
468. it's unprecedented.
My vision was, of course,
Copy !req
469. to make money,
you know, for all of us.
Copy !req
470. This is an opportunity that only
comes along once in a lifetime.
Copy !req
471. Everybody out
there watching...
Copy !req
472. we'd like to kick
your teeth in too.
Copy !req
473. My first reaction to seeing
Mike in everything was, wow.
Copy !req
474. This is... this is amazing.
Copy !req
475. And I, it just took
you by surprise how,
Copy !req
476. how far he had come in such a
short period of time, really.
Copy !req
477. As their popularity grows,
the promotions booking
Copy !req
478. The Road Warriors realize
they're not just getting a
Copy !req
479. run of the mill tag team,
they're getting rising stars
Copy !req
480. with a guaranteed
sellout crowd.
Copy !req
481. The greatest thing about
The Road Warriors is that...
Copy !req
482. we never had to
change who we were,
Copy !req
483. whether we were
babyface or heel.
Copy !req
484. I mean, we were stone cold heels
until we wrestled the Koloffs.
Copy !req
485. Probably some of the best
matches that I remember are
Copy !req
486. the Russian Chain matches
that we had against them.
Copy !req
487. And now we're getting USA cheers
and cheers from the fans.
Copy !req
488. We were over so
bad as heels,
Copy !req
489. it made us great babyfaces.
Copy !req
490. Your winners of the match,
The Road Warriors!
Copy !req
491. In early 1986, Carolina-based
Jim Crocket Promotions
Copy !req
492. approaches The
Road Warriors with an offer
Copy !req
493. to headline their
flagship event.
Copy !req
494. Dusty Rhodes calls
us and he says,
Copy !req
495. "Hey, we got this idea."
Copy !req
496. A scaffold match.
Copy !req
497. Had never been done
on a national scale.
Copy !req
498. Man, I was 310 pounds,
315 pounds,
Copy !req
499. and Hawk was 270.
Copy !req
500. Then you had both
The Midnight Express up there.
Copy !req
501. They were over
200 pounds, each.
Copy !req
502. About 3 days before
the scaffold match,
Copy !req
503. Hawk broke a small bone in
the bottom part of his leg,
Copy !req
504. over in Tokyo.
Copy !req
505. We were the old school,
the show must go on.
Copy !req
506. And he wrestled up there
with a broken leg in a boot.
Copy !req
507. You know, he didn't want to
let the people down 'cause
Copy !req
508. it was sold out and...
it was a big, big deal.
Copy !req
509. Well, what you see
in a lot of sports,
Copy !req
510. and wrestling's
no different, is,
Copy !req
511. there's injuries and
there's pain,
Copy !req
512. and you just self-medicate
after a while.
Copy !req
513. You don't even
go to a doctor.
Copy !req
514. And then it becomes
a vicious cycle.
Copy !req
515. And, that's probably
where Hawk was at that time.
Copy !req
516. It started getting bad latter
part of NWA, WCW run
Copy !req
517. before we went to WWF.
The drinking's a no brainer.
Copy !req
518. I mean, that's...
Copy !req
519. you know, Hawk was straight
up vodka on the rocks guy.
Copy !req
520. The muscle relaxers
were a big part.
Copy !req
521. I'll say 85% of the
guys that died early,
Copy !req
522. in the wrestling business,
the common denominator was
Copy !req
523. the muscle relaxers.
Copy !req
524. I think...
Copy !req
525. Joe was very disappointed
in Hawk and,
Copy !req
526. he didn't let that
out so people knew it.
Copy !req
527. But, knowing Joe,
I could see that.
Copy !req
528. I think it's just
like any marriage,
Copy !req
529. you know,
which it kind of was,
Copy !req
530. that I don't think they
always, you know,
Copy !req
531. saw eye to eye
on everything.
Copy !req
532. So, I think there was, you know,
some friction there at times.
Copy !req
533. It wasn't until he,
we really got into...
Copy !req
534. WWF years where it
really started to get bad.
Copy !req
535. The Road Warriors have
conquered the wrestling world
Copy !req
536. with one
big exception...
Copy !req
537. and the pressures of
performing in the WWF
Copy !req
538. will soon set the stage
for their downfall.
Copy !req
539. The WWF was
always on our screen.
Copy !req
540. It looked like they were the
place to go in this
Copy !req
541. wrestling war, if you wanted
to be on the winning side...
Copy !req
542. And we did.
Copy !req
543. You're gonna feel the pain
by the hands of
Copy !req
544. The Legion of Doom!
Copy !req
545. Vince had just hired
the Modern Day Warrior,
Copy !req
546. Kerry Von Erich. He already
had the Ultimate Warrior.
Copy !req
547. And he says, "Hey, I know
you guys have been
Copy !req
548. The Road Warriors.
Can you think of a
Copy !req
549. different name that we
could use to call you guys?"
Copy !req
550. I said, "How about
the Legion of Doom?"
Copy !req
551. "Oh, that's great!
I love The Legion of Doom!
Copy !req
552. Let's call you guys
The Legion of Doom!"
Copy !req
553. It was actually He-Man.
Copy !req
554. The most powerful
man in the universe!
Copy !req
555. And Hawk would watch
that all the time.
Copy !req
556. He always watched He-Man.
Copy !req
557. This was Hawk...
Copy !req
558. "Back at
the Legion of Doom!"
Copy !req
559. And then, he, he'd just
start to make up stories,
Copy !req
560. and this is while
we're driving in the car.
Copy !req
561. And he'd just start to
make up that we were
Copy !req
562. The Legion of Doom.
Copy !req
563. The WWF, on the road at
the time, was a grind.
Copy !req
564. And you were busy
14 days on, 4 days off,
Copy !req
565. all year long.
Copy !req
566. So, it's like your
whole life is no sleep.
Copy !req
567. But when you get in the ring,
Copy !req
568. then all of a sudden,
you get an injury.
Copy !req
569. Well, now there's no sleep,
you have to train.
Copy !req
570. That injury doesn't go away
and you have to perform.
Copy !req
571. So now, all of a sudden,
you take a pain pill.
Copy !req
572. Pretty soon, you're drinking,
you're taking pain pills,
Copy !req
573. you're taking this,
you're taking that.
Copy !req
574. That's kind of the cycle
that a lot of guys got into.
Copy !req
575. But now, Hawk's downward
spiral is about to intersect
Copy !req
576. with The Road Warrior's
historic climb to the top,
Copy !req
577. and in front of a
record-setting crowd.
Copy !req
578. To the non-wrestling fan,
I wrestled for many years
Copy !req
579. in the WWF.
Copy !req
580. The Godfather's probably
what I'm most well known for.
Copy !req
581. Alright, so...
Copy !req
582. We're in this club,
and then all of a sudden,
Copy !req
583. for some reason, Vince decides
to take everybody's finish.
Copy !req
584. In The Road Warrior's case,
it hurt people.
Copy !req
585. Have you seen their finish?
Copy !req
586. I wouldn't take it
in the ring!
Copy !req
587. And Vince took that
finish in the club.
Copy !req
588. The CEO of this big,
—---- company is taking
Copy !req
589. people's finishes in a
—---- titty bar?
Copy !req
590. Just, I was like...
Copy !req
591. Just as The Road Warriors
are reaching new heights at
Copy !req
592. Vince McMahon's WWF,
Hawk's substance abuse
Copy !req
593. was becoming harder
and harder to hide.
Copy !req
594. That's when we were starting
to get into the age of doing
Copy !req
595. the Pay Per Views now.
Copy !req
596. And now we're doing
the big, huge events,
Copy !req
597. and everything else so,
there was a lot of respect
Copy !req
598. and a lot of pride in what
you did for your work 'cause
Copy !req
599. you wanted to be the guy
that was gonna be top dog
Copy !req
600. on that Pay Per View.
Copy !req
601. Those WWF years was
when it started getting
Copy !req
602. real kind of nasty.
Copy !req
603. He would fail a drug test
and then there would be
Copy !req
604. 3 months off.
Copy !req
605. And of course, me being
a tag team partner,
Copy !req
606. I had to take a few
months off with him.
Copy !req
607. But Mike, again, he wasn't
shy about, about, you know,
Copy !req
608. hiding anything.
You know, whether it was...
Copy !req
609. you know, his drinking
or his, his...
Copy !req
610. his drug use,
or his steroid use,
Copy !req
611. he was pretty outspoken
about, about all of it.
Copy !req
612. As Hawk drifts
closer to the edge,
Copy !req
613. over 80,000 fans
await their match
Copy !req
614. at London's Wembley Stadium,
Copy !req
615. and things are about to
come to a head.
Copy !req
616. Wembley Stadium was a
classic event 'cause
Copy !req
617. they had 90,000 people there.
Copy !req
618. We were supposed to wrestle
for the tag team championship
Copy !req
619. in Wembley Stadium.
Copy !req
620. And, getting ready to go out
to the show and
Copy !req
621. we're doing a run through.
Copy !req
622. Vince McMahon's trying to
tell us what we're gonna do.
Copy !req
623. And I could just see where
Vince is fuming 'cause
Copy !req
624. every time Vince tried
to say something,
Copy !req
625. Hawk's going, "Now Vince,
I got this idea."
Copy !req
626. Found out later there was
this thing called placidyls,
Copy !req
627. which is another kind of little
like a hallucinogenic drug
Copy !req
628. that Hawk had took it and
it lasts, like, for 6 hours.
Copy !req
629. And here we are, gotta drive
motorcycles down to the ring.
Copy !req
630. We went from semi-main event
match against
Copy !req
631. The Natural Disasters, to
wrestling Money Incorporated,
Copy !req
632. I think, their first
or second match.
Copy !req
633. As Animal watches his
partner step into the ring,
Copy !req
634. it's clear that Hawk is
in no shape to perform.
Copy !req
635. Getting in the ring and they
wanted us to do the finish,
Copy !req
636. the Dooms Day off the
top rope and everything,
Copy !req
637. and I said, "We can't do it.
Copy !req
638. He's gonna fall
off the top rope."
Copy !req
639. And he goes,
"No, no, we gotta."
Copy !req
640. I said, "Look at him.
He can't do it."
Copy !req
641. They were watching
him and, you know,
Copy !req
642. Hawk was kind of
like inebriated, you know,
Copy !req
643. quite a bit and...
so, we changed the finish.
Copy !req
644. Hawk's like
right in the middle.
Copy !req
645. I kind of had to push
him out of the way and...
Copy !req
646. When Hawk was on,
he was the best, man.
Copy !req
647. Nobody was better.
Copy !req
648. But, when he kind of was
like that, it kind of really...
Copy !req
649. I wasn't very
happy with him.
Copy !req
650. I knew there was a
suspension coming on,
Copy !req
651. that I was fricking hot.
Copy !req
652. You know, and it's like,
we're gonna spend
Copy !req
653. millions of dollars on
TV and do all this stuff
Copy !req
654. for these guys at Wembley,
the biggest show ever,
Copy !req
655. and if he came
and messed up...
Copy !req
656. Right there, you're not
the top guys anymore.
Copy !req
657. Irritated by
Hawk's recklessness,
Copy !req
658. Animal chooses to
go his separate way, alone.
Copy !req
659. We went to, from that
London taping to
Copy !req
660. Hershey, Pennsylvania
to do TV.
Copy !req
661. And when we got to
Hershey, Pennsylvania,
Copy !req
662. Paul Ellering and I
are ready to do TV,
Copy !req
663. waiting for Hawk
to do interviews.
Copy !req
664. Well, Hawk hadn't
shown up yet.
Copy !req
665. Nobody knew where Hawk went.
Copy !req
666. Well, he's just not
on the plane.
Copy !req
667. Nobody knew where Hawk was.
Copy !req
668. Got a phone call, and Hawk
called Vince's secretary
Copy !req
669. and said, "Hey, I quit."
We're sitting there, like,
Copy !req
670. okay, now what am
I gonna do?
Copy !req
671. Animal decides he's not
gonna chase after
Copy !req
672. his partner this time...
Copy !req
673. after performing the role
of fixer for so many years.
Copy !req
674. I think it just got the time to
draw the line in the sand and,
Copy !req
675. listen, man, shit,
I've had enough. That's it.
Copy !req
676. I'm fricking done with this.
Copy !req
677. You know, Joe was
probably in a panic,
Copy !req
678. wondering how in the world
are we gonna solve this?
Copy !req
679. You know, wrestling
is your whole life.
Copy !req
680. It's all you have.
Copy !req
681. Your family's at home,
and you're with the guys,
Copy !req
682. and you finally
get that push and,
Copy !req
683. you can't have something be
negative to bring you back down
Copy !req
684. and that's,
that's what was happening.
Copy !req
685. Mike kind of, you know,
the short fuse and losing
Copy !req
686. his temper and, whether it
was with the promoter,
Copy !req
687. could have a real impact
on Joe's career and
Copy !req
688. even Ellering's career, right?
Copy !req
689. So, I'm thinking
to myself, well,
Copy !req
690. I'm gonna be a business man,
and I'm gonna serve out
Copy !req
691. the dates that I
have left with WWF,
Copy !req
692. to protect our name, in case
we ever want to come back.
Copy !req
693. I said, man, I want
to do these dates, Mike,
Copy !req
694. so we leave on
good terms.
Copy !req
695. Right, to be businessmen.
I put my foot down and,
Copy !req
696. Hawk was so out of his mind
he called up a couple guys and
Copy !req
697. ended up working out
his own deal in Japan.
Copy !req
698. Like, screw the team.
Copy !req
699. He just went on his own.
Then we were done.
Copy !req
700. Well, he tried to get it over
there and had Kensuke Sasaki
Copy !req
701. dressing up as
The Power Warrior,
Copy !req
702. all spiked shoulder pads,
the face paint, and...
Copy !req
703. I said, man, that's...
that's our gimmick.
Copy !req
704. Hawk inadvertently leaves
the future of the world's
Copy !req
705. biggest tag team in limbo
by replacing Animal and
Copy !req
706. continuing The Road
Warriors' brand in Japan.
Copy !req
707. Standing in front of you
lies the future in
Copy !req
708. tag team wrestling, my new
partner, Power Warrior!
Copy !req
709. What are you doing, bro?
Copy !req
710. I'm not doing
that here in the US.
Copy !req
711. I'm not having
anybody replace you.
Copy !req
712. I'm by myself!
Copy !req
713. I ended up doing a
two on one match and,
Copy !req
714. I herniated a couple discs.
Copy !req
715. Animal got injured and,
you know,
Copy !req
716. there were like two years
there where I didn't do
Copy !req
717. anything with
wrestling anymore.
Copy !req
718. And, I didn't think
I'd ever go back.
Copy !req
719. While Animal lies in wait
recovering from his injury,
Copy !req
720. Hawk presses on.
Copy !req
721. But without the
guidance of his partner,
Copy !req
722. he spirals out of control.
Copy !req
723. Like 3 different times
he'd been rushed into
Copy !req
724. an emergency room of
drug overdoses.
Copy !req
725. He told me he had a head-on
collision with an 18-wheeler
Copy !req
726. and rolled the pickup truck
6 times with no seatbelt on,
Copy !req
727. and walked away from it.
Copy !req
728. You know, I don't
know how many...
Copy !req
729. ah, near death
experiences Hawk had.
Copy !req
730. I know he had a few.
Copy !req
731. When he got Hep C,
it's like he got
Copy !req
732. slapped in the face like, wow.
Copy !req
733. He's not the first wrestler
that contracted that.
Copy !req
734. You know, guys in this
wrestling business, man,
Copy !req
735. used to do some crazy things,
you know, speed balling,
Copy !req
736. mixing different drugs together,
Copy !req
737. different things like
that where, you know,
Copy !req
738. guys would share a
needle and just go,
Copy !req
739. "Oh, god dang, buddy.
You guys are nuts."
Copy !req
740. He was on the interferon,
Copy !req
741. which is the medicine
you get from Hep C.
Copy !req
742. He fricking cured himself
of the Hep C.
Copy !req
743. But the worst part about it
is the doctor gave him the
Copy !req
744. green light to go do
whatever he wanted to do so,
Copy !req
745. he thought that meant,
okay, I guess I can
Copy !req
746. keep drinking and partying.
Copy !req
747. Hawk's wild side shows
no sign of slowing down,
Copy !req
748. but in 1997, a new opportunity
arises from the WWF and
Copy !req
749. is too tempting
for either man to resist.
Copy !req
750. Vince McMahon has
been great to us...
Copy !req
751. and the WWF has
been great to us.
Copy !req
752. And they're a classy
organization and we only
Copy !req
753. want to associate ourself
with a classy organization.
Copy !req
754. I, I knew eventually that
it would come back to it
Copy !req
755. was gonna be The Road Warriors.
Copy !req
756. We were so unique in the
way we did everything,
Copy !req
757. and we were so unique
as a tag team and...
Copy !req
758. it's like nothing else like
it in the wrestling business.
Copy !req
759. Animal and I have
become so close.
Copy !req
760. We're probably the only
tag team that's been around
Copy !req
761. 14 years straight.
We're pretty much a unit.
Copy !req
762. Their new contract comes
with a strict insurance policy,
Copy !req
763. guaranteeing they
will make their matches.
Copy !req
764. But WWF introduces a
third member to the team,
Copy !req
765. 29-year-old ex-Denver
Bronco, Daren Drozdoff.
Copy !req
766. They introduce Droz, and...
Copy !req
767. he was gonna be like
the youngest member
Copy !req
768. of The Road Warriors.
Copy !req
769. Actually, I remember
when I first saw them.
Copy !req
770. You know, they had
been icons forever.
Copy !req
771. Hey, this is Droz.
Copy !req
772. You know, I'm one of the
players they brought in for
Copy !req
773. The Road Warriors
to work with and,
Copy !req
774. you know, had a
great run with 'em.
Copy !req
775. While the WWF has
enforced a contingency plan,
Copy !req
776. it also sees The Road Warriors'
real life problems
Copy !req
777. as something it
can capitalize on.
Copy !req
778. Vince McMahon came
to us and said, "Hey,
Copy !req
779. we want to do this angle
with you guys where Hawk's,
Copy !req
780. we're gonna portray him
as drunk and have him,
Copy !req
781. happens on TV."
Copy !req
782. I don't know
if he's inebriated.
Copy !req
783. The referee's not gonna
start this match, is he?
Copy !req
784. Yeah, he'd come out like
staggering around while,
Copy !req
785. you know, they were saying
I was trying to separate them.
Copy !req
786. Well, Droz...
just assaulting Hawk.
Copy !req
787. "We don't need him, you know,
he's messed up again." So...
Copy !req
788. Drozdoff!
Copy !req
789. Delivering Hawk's
own move to Hawk!
Copy !req
790. Yeah, it was,
it was heartbreaking.
Copy !req
791. But that's wrestling.
Copy !req
792. They take the dominant part
of your personality and
Copy !req
793. they just make it bigger.
Copy !req
794. You know, it was
kind of tough.
Copy !req
795. It's like, you know,
they're doing this.
Copy !req
796. But, he had been
through it and
Copy !req
797. he didn't have a
problem with it.
Copy !req
798. They wanted Hawk to climb
the Titantron and
Copy !req
799. they wanted me to...
Copy !req
800. you know, they wanted
me to portray like,
Copy !req
801. "Hey, Hawk, don't jump,"
type of thing.
Copy !req
802. Hawk, I wish I could say I
know how you feel, but I can't!
Copy !req
803. But I care about your life!
Copy !req
804. Droz did a deal where they
made up, made pretend he was
Copy !req
805. gonna go up to the Titantron
and help Hawk
Copy !req
806. and Hawk had all his demons
and everything else and
Copy !req
807. he was drunk up there.
Copy !req
808. When they really
went to go grab him,
Copy !req
809. he really went
and pushed 'em.
Copy !req
810. Get his shirt— Ah, no! Ah!
Copy !req
811. Got away.
Copy !req
812. You know, to be
honest with ya,
Copy !req
813. I didn't really have it in me
to want to do the angle.
Copy !req
814. It was too close to what
was going on in real life.
Copy !req
815. And that bothered me.
Copy !req
816. The angle is not only unpopular
with Hawk and Animal,
Copy !req
817. but with the
fans as well.
Copy !req
818. And once again, The Road
Warriors make the choice
Copy !req
819. to hit the road on
their own terms.
Copy !req
820. We were wrestling
in Australia and,
Copy !req
821. you had the beach,
you got drinks,
Copy !req
822. you could buy Xanax
over the counter,
Copy !req
823. and so, it's just
not a good mix.
Copy !req
824. Rumor had it that 3
or 4 of the guys,
Copy !req
825. and Hawk was one of 'em,
had gotten ahold of some
Copy !req
826. party essentials,
let's just say,
Copy !req
827. and they were pretty much
up for two days.
Copy !req
828. So, when you're doing the
coke and you're doing
Copy !req
829. the muscle relaxer,
you're going,
Copy !req
830. yo, yo, yo, like a yo-yo.
Copy !req
831. Your heart can't
take that all the time.
Copy !req
832. And, as I'm looking around
the arena by the
Copy !req
833. entrance area there, I see this,
I see this big crowd of people.
Copy !req
834. And I'm thinking
to myself, well,
Copy !req
835. somebody just came
back from the last match,
Copy !req
836. they're just laying down.
Copy !req
837. And I push everybody aside
and it's fricking Hawk,
Copy !req
838. and they're putting
the oxygen mask on him.
Copy !req
839. I said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.
What are you doing?"
Copy !req
840. I said, "He's gotta
go out wrestling."
Copy !req
841. They said, "Man,
he can't wrestle."
Copy !req
842. He goes, "This guy's about
ready to stroke out,"
Copy !req
843. and they took him
to the hospital.
Copy !req
844. Hawk had cardiomyopathy,
Copy !req
845. his heart was about
ready to blow up.
Copy !req
846. And he calls me up
and he says,
Copy !req
847. "Animal, you gotta
come get me."
Copy !req
848. I said, "What's going on,
man?"
Copy !req
849. He goes, "I am not dying
in this fricking country."
Copy !req
850. Hawk and I were literally,
when we were on the road,
Copy !req
851. we were brothers.
It was a hard situation
Copy !req
852. because there was
such a love of the guy,
Copy !req
853. but the hate of
what was going on.
Copy !req
854. So, I went, picked Hawk up,
Copy !req
855. checked him out of
the hospital -
Copy !req
856. against doctor's orders -
and from Sydney,
Copy !req
857. flew all the way
to LA and from LA,
Copy !req
858. he was going back to Tampa.
Copy !req
859. I said,
"You're on your own now."
Copy !req
860. When it seems Hawk and
Animal's run as wrestling's
Copy !req
861. most dominant tag team is
about to come to an end,
Copy !req
862. an unlikely event brings
them back together
Copy !req
863. in a way nobody expects.
Copy !req
864. Animal is faced with no
choice but to strike out on
Copy !req
865. his own when Hawk's drug
affliction threatens to
Copy !req
866. ruin both of their careers.
Copy !req
867. I had just gotten
home off the road.
Copy !req
868. I got done
working out at the gym,
Copy !req
869. and there's 6,
300-pound guys called
Copy !req
870. The Christian Power Team.
They did this event.
Copy !req
871. So, I went to it and I
was pretty impressed by it.
Copy !req
872. Eventually, Joe shared that
story with me and I said,
Copy !req
873. "Man, why don't you come out
to this conference in Phoenix?
Copy !req
874. Come on out."
He goes, "Could Hawk come?"
Copy !req
875. They came to Phoenix and,
I just remember Mike was the
Copy !req
876. first one to the altar and
wanted to make a decision to
Copy !req
877. give his life to the lord.
Copy !req
878. And, that weekend,
we actually even baptized him.
Copy !req
879. We did a—
In the swimming pool,
Copy !req
880. we did a water
baptism with him.
Copy !req
881. And, from that point on,
Hawk lived in a good way.
Copy !req
882. I think he found religion,
and then,
Copy !req
883. he married a gal named Dale.
Copy !req
884. And, he was very
happy with her.
Copy !req
885. He was a different
person then, with her.
Copy !req
886. Now, my motivation's
different than what it was
Copy !req
887. when I first started out.
Copy !req
888. My motivation now is
my family, my fiancé.
Copy !req
889. To make sure that if
something were to ever
Copy !req
890. happen to me,
she's not gonna be hurt.
Copy !req
891. He used to say,
"God has 9 lives,
Copy !req
892. but God gave me 10, so I
can give my life to Jesus."
Copy !req
893. He was moving out of his
house off the beach and,
Copy !req
894. he had just moved the last
piece of heavy furniture
Copy !req
895. in the house for
his wife, Dale.
Copy !req
896. And he said, "Dale,
I'm gonna go upstairs and
Copy !req
897. lay down for a little bit.
I don't feel well."
Copy !req
898. And I was out
in my backyard,
Copy !req
899. and all of a sudden,
I get a phone call.
Copy !req
900. Friend of mine,
Bob, and he goes,
Copy !req
901. "Hey, have you
talked to Mike?"
Copy !req
902. I said, "Yeah, man,
talked to him last night."
Copy !req
903. He goes, "Huh. Have you
talked to him yet today?"
Copy !req
904. And I said, "No."
Copy !req
905. And he goes,
"Joe, Mike died."
Copy !req
906. It was an early Sunday morning,
October the 19th,
Copy !req
907. when the world of wrestling
was saddened to hear
Copy !req
908. that Michael Hegstrand
had passed away
Copy !req
909. at the young age of 46.
Copy !req
910. And it wasn't that
he OD'd or whatever.
Copy !req
911. You know, it was just
that his heart just stopped.
Copy !req
912. It was probably one of
the hardest things
Copy !req
913. I ever had to go through.
Copy !req
914. Well, it was, you know,
I was just at home and,
Copy !req
915. and Animal calls me
up and, and tells me.
Copy !req
916. You know, "Hawk is gone."
Copy !req
917. Joanie, my wife,
I said...
Copy !req
918. "We gotta get the..." Hm.
Yeah, we—
Copy !req
919. "We gotta get the black van
and drive to the funeral."
Copy !req
920. The old black van that I
took him to the airport in
Copy !req
921. our first day together.
I still had that black van.
Copy !req
922. Went to the K-Mart and got
cans of black spray paint,
Copy !req
923. cover up all the rust.
And, we got in the black van
Copy !req
924. and drove all the way to Tampa.
55 miles an hour.
Copy !req
925. Got passed by 10,000 cars.
Copy !req
926. Yeah. I remember. Ah...
Copy !req
927. October 19th, 2003.
Copy !req
928. The dark clouds
covered the bright sun.
Copy !req
929. Today we lost our friend.
Copy !req
930. Our brother of planes,
trains, and automobiles.
Copy !req
931. Many miles.
Copy !req
932. If I could steal a line from,
Copy !req
933. from The Outlaw Josey Wales,
Copy !req
934. "Hawk, it is good that men like
us met in the struggle of life."
Copy !req
935. Hawk's death brings to an
end a partnership that has
Copy !req
936. not been matched in
wrestling ever since.
Copy !req
937. He was unique both in
and out of the ring.
Copy !req
938. A warrior, a partner,
a friend, and a brother.
Copy !req
939. He, he wasn't Hawk.
Copy !req
940. Yeah.
Copy !req
941. I think that is a
key point is, he was still Mike.
Copy !req
942. We never looked
at him as Hawk.
Copy !req
943. He really gave a
shit about his friends.
Copy !req
944. He just had your back, and
he probably knew I needed it.
Copy !req
945. Biggest compliment that I
can make to Hawk is that
Copy !req
946. everybody liked
to be around him.
Copy !req
947. So, it was a huge void.
Copy !req
948. And, Animal would know a
lot more about that than me
Copy !req
949. because they've been
together and
Copy !req
950. always thought of as a twosome.
Copy !req
951. A lot of things in common.
At the gym, worked hard.
Copy !req
952. They were a great tag team.
Copy !req
953. They performed
unbelievably in the ring.
Copy !req
954. But you know,
totally different.
Copy !req
955. They were brothers.
Copy !req
956. You know, brothers,
they love each other,
Copy !req
957. but they'll have a
fight once in a while.
Copy !req
958. I mean, listen, man, there were
times where we were
Copy !req
959. at each other's throat 'cause
we were together so much.
Copy !req
960. But, 99.9% of the time there
was a common respect there.
Copy !req
961. It's over half my life, man,
I was with Hawk.
Copy !req
962. From being stars in Japan
to being family members,
Copy !req
963. to being brothers,
to everything else.
Copy !req
964. You know, now what do
I do now he's gone?
Copy !req
965. And that's the
hardest thing.
Copy !req
966. I think we will be remembered
as the greatest tag team
Copy !req
967. in professional wrestling
and I'd just like to go down
Copy !req
968. as one tough dude
that had one tough partner.
Copy !req
969. Hawk should be
remembered as one of the...
Copy !req
970. one half of the
greatest tag team ever.
Copy !req
971. He had one of the best
punches in wrestling,
Copy !req
972. one of the best
interviews, for sure.
Copy !req
973. Well!
Copy !req
974. Hawk was
definitely a character.
Copy !req
975. To be honest with you, a part
of the wrestling business
Copy !req
976. died when Hawk died.
Copy !req
