1. As a fan of Owen Hart,
pioneer of all pioneers...
Copy !req
2. You know, one of the best.
Copy !req
3. I knew that this guy
was gonna make it.
Copy !req
4. You can tell.
Copy !req
5. When I grew up, I wanted
to be just like Owen Heart.
Copy !req
6. He was really
the chosen one.
Copy !req
7. Owen, he just had
a very nice aura.
Copy !req
8. He was always just
trying to spread the joy.
Copy !req
9. And he was cast in
the role of a lifetime.
Copy !req
10. Owen Hart was a
naturally gifted wrestler.
Copy !req
11. He was born into a
legendary wrestling dynasty,
Copy !req
12. but he put family
above all else.
Copy !req
13. Despite his
success in the ring,
Copy !req
14. he was always searching
for a way out of it.
Copy !req
15. On May 23rd, 1999,
Copy !req
16. during a live
Pay Per View event,
Copy !req
17. Owen Hart's hopes for a
life after wrestling
Copy !req
18. were tragically cut short.
Copy !req
19. Ladies and gentlemen,
when you're doing
Copy !req
20. live television, a lot of things
can happen and
Copy !req
21. sometimes they are not good.
Copy !req
22. Is this really real?
Copy !req
23. And then I remember hearing
a gasp from the crowd.
Copy !req
24. It was shocking. Like, "What
do you mean, Owen fell?"
Copy !req
25. He goes, "Owen just fell!"
Copy !req
26. It was Owen. He was
like laying in the ring,
Copy !req
27. like, face up.
Copy !req
28. I just heard them screaming,
"It's not a fake!
Copy !req
29. Get a real EMT back here!"
Copy !req
30. If he fell,
he's gotta be dead.
Copy !req
31. Owen Hart fell from the
ceiling during an event
Copy !req
32. in Kansas City.
Copy !req
33. Someone doesn't just fall
from the top of an arena.
Copy !req
34. Something's wrong here.
Copy !req
35. Her husband flew to Kansas City
to go to work and
Copy !req
36. never came home again.
Copy !req
37. Mere days after
Owen's death,
Copy !req
38. his widow Martha vows to
uncover what happened
Copy !req
39. that night in Kansas City.
Copy !req
40. There will be a day of
reckoning and this is
Copy !req
41. my final promise to Owen.
Copy !req
42. It was out of
respect for Owen.
Copy !req
43. I can't let everything
that our life was
Copy !req
44. just be all for nothing.
Copy !req
45. Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you...
Copy !req
46. From the earliest days of
professional wrestling,
Copy !req
47. it has been traditionally
a family business.
Copy !req
48. We are the greatest
combined force
Copy !req
49. in the World Wrestling
Federation!
Copy !req
50. Few compare to the impact of
the Hart family in Calgary,
Copy !req
51. who has spawned generations
of in-ring icons.
Copy !req
52. Despite being the
youngest of 12 siblings,
Copy !req
53. Owen Hart was
considered a true prodigy.
Copy !req
54. Number 1, baby!
Copy !req
55. But with the circumstances
surrounding his death,
Copy !req
56. his legacy has
become more complex.
Copy !req
57. In this episode, his family
comes together to share
Copy !req
58. memories of the husband and
father they lost all too soon.
Copy !req
59. I don't think you can talk
about pro wrestling history
Copy !req
60. and not incorporate
the Hart's into that
Copy !req
61. conversation very early.
Copy !req
62. I'm Jim Ross, 2007 member
of the WWE Hall of Fame,
Copy !req
63. the NWA Hall of Fame, and
The National Hall of Fame.
Copy !req
64. And, one of the athletes
that I worked with very closely
Copy !req
65. is the late, great
Owen Hart, one of the best.
Copy !req
66. Stu Hart had a dozen kids,
Copy !req
67. and all of the boys
became wrestlers,
Copy !req
68. and all the girls grew
up to marry wrestlers.
Copy !req
69. So, the extended Hart family
was almost 20 people
Copy !req
70. involved in the professional
wrestling industry.
Copy !req
71. I'm Jim Cornette.
For almost 40 years,
Copy !req
72. I've been a promoter,
a matchmaker, announcer,
Copy !req
73. manager, historian,
Copy !req
74. all things related
to professional wrestling,
Copy !req
75. and I also managed
Owen Hart.
Copy !req
76. The Hart family was almost a
dynasty in wrestling because
Copy !req
77. of the respect that Stu Hart
had as a promoter,
Copy !req
78. and the fact that when
the boys got started
Copy !req
79. becoming wrestlers,
they were all good.
Copy !req
80. And, the Hart family,
over a period of time,
Copy !req
81. became one of the royal families
in professional wrestling.
Copy !req
82. It was like a nice Sopranos.
Copy !req
83. They didn't kill anybody,
but they stuck together and
Copy !req
84. they helped each other, and
everybody got a chance to
Copy !req
85. pick the brass ring off the
wrestling merry-go-round.
Copy !req
86. All of his sons began to want
to follow in his footsteps.
Copy !req
87. Bret Hart was, obviously,
the biggest star worldwide.
Copy !req
88. Some of the other sons -
Ross and Keith -
Copy !req
89. were stars as well.
And, then the son-in-laws,
Copy !req
90. Davey Boy Smith
"The British Bulldog",
Copy !req
91. Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart.
Copy !req
92. So many of them got to be
stars that at one point,
Copy !req
93. there was a Hart
family member in
Copy !req
94. half the territories
in wrestling.
Copy !req
95. Owen was the youngest brother
to get involved in wrestling,
Copy !req
96. but when he started,
he was a prodigy, instantly.
Copy !req
97. Owen Hart, as a rookie,
he was spectacular.
Copy !req
98. His acrobatics were amazing.
Copy !req
99. He could flip
backwards off the ropes.
Copy !req
100. He could land on his
feet from every direction.
Copy !req
101. I saw this guy doing all of
these things I'd never
Copy !req
102. seen before: back flips
off of a guy's back,
Copy !req
103. he had blond hair,
he looked cool.
Copy !req
104. He kind of looked like a
bigger version of Johnny
Copy !req
105. from The Karate Kid.
Copy !req
106. I just thought,
I want to do this.
Copy !req
107. I want to do it
with that guy,
Copy !req
108. and I used to draw pictures
of me and Owen Hart as
Copy !req
109. the tag team
champions, in Stampede.
Copy !req
110. I just really was,
was influenced by him.
Copy !req
111. You could tell
Owen was a natural.
Copy !req
112. You didn't have
to teach him.
Copy !req
113. He'd already picked
it up by osmosis.
Copy !req
114. I'm thinking, within hours
of his debuting,
Copy !req
115. he's as good as
anybody in the territory.
Copy !req
116. You can see it.
Just get him in the game...
Copy !req
117. he's gonna be a star.
He was.
Copy !req
118. Please, Owen.
I'm gonna cut the tape.
Copy !req
119. No, hang on.
Copy !req
120. Well, why don't you say
something to the camera,
Copy !req
121. you egomaniac!
Copy !req
122. Hello there.
Copy !req
123. I am Martha Hart.
Copy !req
124. I am a doctor for the
University of Calgary and
Copy !req
125. Alberta Children's Hospital.
Copy !req
126. I'm the founder of the
Owen Hart Foundation
Copy !req
127. and I'm a mom.
Copy !req
128. That's my whole title.
Copy !req
129. I started dating
Owen when I was 15.
Copy !req
130. For me, he was just
very striking, you know,
Copy !req
131. he had this blond hair
and really well built,
Copy !req
132. and I thought he was a
bit of a scrapper because,
Copy !req
133. well, first of all,
he was an amateur wrestler.
Copy !req
134. But then, as it
turned out, you know,
Copy !req
135. he was actually quite a
gentle giant underneath.
Copy !req
136. He was a really secure,
grounded person.
Copy !req
137. Even though he ended up being
a very world famous wrestler,
Copy !req
138. he didn't feed off of
that fame.
Copy !req
139. He really wanted to have
this very normal life.
Copy !req
140. He wanted to have,
you know, a normal job.
Copy !req
141. He wanted the
white picket fence.
Copy !req
142. - Hi, Owen.
- Hi, Martha.
Copy !req
143. What ya doin'?
Copy !req
144. I'm just walking
with my boy Oje, here.
Copy !req
145. Owen was an amazing father.
He loved being a dad.
Copy !req
146. - Hi, Oje.
- Hi.
Copy !req
147. My childhood was phenomenal.
Copy !req
148. I loved every second.
Copy !req
149. I'm Oje Hart, and I
am Owen Hart's son.
Copy !req
150. My mom's love for my
father was unexampled.
Copy !req
151. They had the love that could
only get stronger with time.
Copy !req
152. I love trains. Trains are my
favorite thing on earth,
Copy !req
153. especially toy trains.
Every year,
Copy !req
154. a train show would
come to Calgary and
Copy !req
155. I only wanted to go with dad.
Copy !req
156. And, I remember he said
he was going somewhere,
Copy !req
157. like a big trip, but I think
what he did was
Copy !req
158. he actually rebooked it.
Copy !req
159. That was him stiff-arming
the show and saying, you know,
Copy !req
160. "Kids come first, and this
weekend I cannot miss.
Copy !req
161. And, this one's for my son."
Copy !req
162. But, I remember that
when he was there,
Copy !req
163. it was us there together,
and mom and Athena.
Copy !req
164. Athena, do you like that?
Copy !req
165. - Wee.
- Yeah.
Copy !req
166. Him taking me to the zoo.
That was, like, our thing.
Copy !req
167. And, I don't have
very many memories,
Copy !req
168. but that's like the one that's
always stuck and it's just,
Copy !req
169. yeah, it makes me
happy 'cause the short time
Copy !req
170. that we had together,
that was my favorite.
Copy !req
171. I went to school where my
dad went to school and so,
Copy !req
172. everyone always knew me as
the wrestler's daughter.
Copy !req
173. Hey, daddy wins.
Who did he beat?
Copy !req
174. Uncle Bret.
He turned his head!
Copy !req
175. Owen loved the
wrestling business.
Copy !req
176. He wasn't a lifer like
some of the other guys.
Copy !req
177. He wanted to save his money,
devote it to his family,
Copy !req
178. and get out at an early age.
Copy !req
179. At the age of 23,
Owen signs with the WWF,
Copy !req
180. where his older
brother, Bret,
Copy !req
181. is quickly rising through
the ranks as an
Copy !req
182. up and coming star.
Copy !req
183. I remember going to the
Winnipeg Arena to see a
Copy !req
184. WWF show and this guy comes to
the ring wearing -
Copy !req
185. I knew what Stampede Wrestling
tights looked like,
Copy !req
186. they had lightning bolts on
the side and three stars
Copy !req
187. on the ass, except
for he had a mask.
Copy !req
188. I'm like, wow,
I wonder if—
Copy !req
189. that guy looks like a
Stampede Wrestling guy.
Copy !req
190. Who is it? And then
he did the bum flip,
Copy !req
191. and I was like,
that's Owen Hart.
Copy !req
192. Owen had a
great personality,
Copy !req
193. but he didn't have an
over-the-top personality
Copy !req
194. that translated on
television for the style of
Copy !req
195. the WWF at the time.
Copy !req
196. By 1993, the Blue Blazer
persona is phased out,
Copy !req
197. and Owen enters a story line
portraying Bret's jealous
Copy !req
198. little brother,
looking to prove himself.
Copy !req
199. Bret Hart, you're nothing
but a selfish person!
Copy !req
200. Your ego is too big!
Copy !req
201. You only worry
about yourself, Bret!
Copy !req
202. Their feud builds towards a
highly anticipated match
Copy !req
203. at WrestleMania X.
Copy !req
204. There's a lot of great
matches I would watch.
Copy !req
205. One of them would
definitely be in the Garden,
Copy !req
206. WrestleMania X,
Owen and Bret,
Copy !req
207. because here's the deal:
two brothers from Calgary,
Copy !req
208. two sizes, too hard,
came into New York city,
Copy !req
209. Madison Square Garden,
the world's most famous arena,
Copy !req
210. and stole the show.
Bottom line.
Copy !req
211. - Oh, wow!
Copy !req
212. I think it was a testament to
Bret that he went along with it
Copy !req
213. because it was really
designed to help Owen.
Copy !req
214. Owen wasn't over yet.
He was getting there,
Copy !req
215. he was getting the route.
Bret was the star.
Copy !req
216. Arguably, the biggest
star that we had.
Copy !req
217. So, Bret doing this was
really brotherly love.
Copy !req
218. He helped his brother
get recognized and
Copy !req
219. get the spotlight on him.
Copy !req
220. After his win
at WrestleMania,
Copy !req
221. Owen Hart comes
into his own,
Copy !req
222. achieving accolades beyond
the shadow of his brother.
Copy !req
223. But for Owen's family,
his growing success
Copy !req
224. means a more rigorous
travel schedule.
Copy !req
225. He was gone over
250 days a year,
Copy !req
226. and he would go ten days on
and then three days off.
Copy !req
227. Just on my way to go wrestle at
the Nashville Municipal party.
Copy !req
228. It was just a
revolving door of, you know,
Copy !req
229. he was home and then
he was gone, and home and gone.
Copy !req
230. It's a rough life,
but one day I'll have,
Copy !req
231. hopefully, some money to pay
for all the aches and pains
Copy !req
232. that I've done and I can
enjoy myself at home with
Copy !req
233. my wife and family.
Copy !req
234. Hm, that's nice.
Copy !req
235. In 1997, Bret's controversial
departure from the WWF
Copy !req
236. to rival company WCW
shakes up the entire industry.
Copy !req
237. In an incident known as
The Montreal Screw Job,
Copy !req
238. Bret is stripped of his
championship belt following
Copy !req
239. creative differences
with the company.
Copy !req
240. Fans witness real life
backstage drama unfold
Copy !req
241. as Bret is left stunned
on live television.
Copy !req
242. The Montreal Screw Job was
a double cross on Bret Hart
Copy !req
243. and Bret was hot.
He was mad.
Copy !req
244. Even though Owen didn't
share the same sort of
Copy !req
245. philosophy or view of
wrestling that, you know,
Copy !req
246. Bret had, he knew it was
important to his brother,
Copy !req
247. so he knew his brother
was gonna be crushed.
Copy !req
248. So, soon as that happened,
he went right to the ring
Copy !req
249. and told Bret, "Don't worry
about it. It doesn't matter.
Copy !req
250. It's, you know,
it's all garbage anyway."
Copy !req
251. But for Bret, it was
a stab in the heart.
Copy !req
252. This thing was taking on a
life of its own and it was
Copy !req
253. starting to look bad and
reflect poorly on the WWF,
Copy !req
254. and they wanted to keep
one member of the family.
Copy !req
255. The fact that we knew Owen
was gonna be a star -
Copy !req
256. big star, not a star,
he was already a star -
Copy !req
257. but to get to the next level,
we gave Owen a new contract.
Copy !req
258. You know, you get a
lot of people say,
Copy !req
259. "Oh, it had nothing
to do with Montreal."
Copy !req
260. Bullshit. It had a lot to do
with Montreal, come on.
Copy !req
261. But that's not bad,
it's just what it is.
Copy !req
262. We knew what we had, and
he was so motivated from
Copy !req
263. being Bret's little brother
to being Owen Hart.
Copy !req
264. And with Bret gone
to another team,
Copy !req
265. it helped facilitate that.
Copy !req
266. It has been said that
anything can happen here
Copy !req
267. in the World
Wrestling Federation,
Copy !req
268. but now more than ever,
Copy !req
269. truer words have
never been spoken.
Copy !req
270. Vince McMahon wanted
wrestlers to start being actors
Copy !req
271. at this point, and he
couldn't understand why
Copy !req
272. they didn't want to
go along with it.
Copy !req
273. Because, the way that
wrestlers had always been
Copy !req
274. portrayed was, you're
not playing a character.
Copy !req
275. This is you.
Copy !req
276. Surely, the era of the
superhero who urged you to
Copy !req
277. say your prayers and take your
vitamins is definitely passé.
Copy !req
278. In the new entertainment,
Attitude Era,
Copy !req
279. they didn't know what to
do with Owen because
Copy !req
280. he was just a great
professional wrestler.
Copy !req
281. They kept trying to find
something to plug him into.
Copy !req
282. Well, let's get him in
an affair with somebody,
Copy !req
283. Debra McMichael.
Copy !req
284. Owen was the one guy that
was always pushing back,
Copy !req
285. you know, "I don't
want to do this angle.
Copy !req
286. I don't want to look like I'm
cheating on my wife with Debra."
Copy !req
287. It was that tipping point that
we reached at that time between,
Copy !req
288. we're not gonna use
great wrestlers just 'cause
Copy !req
289. they're great athletes and
they're great wrestlers.
Copy !req
290. They have to be willing to put
on goofy outfits and do skits.
Copy !req
291. Check this out.
Owen Hart, man,
Copy !req
292. his, his head is not
in this at all.
Copy !req
293. So, that's why when they
came to him with a revival
Copy !req
294. of the Blue Blazer, as a
comedy gimmick, "Okay, sure.
Copy !req
295. At least that's not gonna
make my family look bad,"
Copy !req
296. right, it's just stupid.
Copy !req
297. Here it comes!
It's Owen Hart!
Copy !req
298. The Blazer is Owen Hart!
Copy !req
299. You got one of the top four
or five workers in the world
Copy !req
300. and you want to put him
under a mask,
Copy !req
301. an unknown mask,
the Blue Blazer.
Copy !req
302. Didn't work.
Bottom line is really simple:
Copy !req
303. creative couldn't find a
better idea to utilize one of
Copy !req
304. the best technical workers
in the entire world,
Copy !req
305. and I found that
to be embarrassing.
Copy !req
306. In 1998,
the WWF reprises
Copy !req
307. the Blue Blazer character,
a campy superhero gimmick
Copy !req
308. Owen Hart portrayed
a decade earlier.
Copy !req
309. Take your vitamins,
say your prayers,
Copy !req
310. and drink your milk.
Woo!
Copy !req
311. They were also trying
to spoof Sting who was a
Copy !req
312. wrestler in the WCW and,
he would come down,
Copy !req
313. descend into the ring.
Copy !req
314. And so, I think they were
competing with WCW and that
Copy !req
315. was one way that they could
almost make fun of them, too,
Copy !req
316. in a sense.
Copy !req
317. He's stuck. The idiot is
stuck in the harness.
Copy !req
318. The company that had rigged
Owen was a top rigging company
Copy !req
319. that had rigged Elton John,
The Rolling Stones.
Copy !req
320. They also had worked for
Disney and MGM in Las Vegas
Copy !req
321. so, they, they
were really renowned.
Copy !req
322. You know, Owen didn't have
control over any of the stunt.
Copy !req
323. He was locked in with what they
call a locking carabiner,
Copy !req
324. which they feel is the only
safe apparatus to use
Copy !req
325. if you're doing
these types of descent.
Copy !req
326. He can't get out
of the harness!
Copy !req
327. This is nonsense!
Copy !req
328. Six months later, the aerial
descent of the Blue Blazer
Copy !req
329. is revisited for an upcoming
Pay Per View event
Copy !req
330. called Over the Edge.
Copy !req
331. Owen was on his way home.
Copy !req
332. He was just flying in and I
was literally just walking
Copy !req
333. out the door to go pick him up
from the airport when I got
Copy !req
334. a call from someone that worked
at the WWF and they said,
Copy !req
335. "Well, you know, we need to
get his measurements
Copy !req
336. for a vest because we're
doing this drop-in
Copy !req
337. this weekend in
Kansas City and,
Copy !req
338. we need to get his
measurements ASAP."
Copy !req
339. And, and I remember thinking,
you just had him.
Copy !req
340. He was just with you guys.
Copy !req
341. Why didn't you just,
why didn't you get it?
Copy !req
342. And I asked her that,
and then, she said,
Copy !req
343. "Well, we just decided.
We just wrote it in."
Copy !req
344. So, I actually asked on
the phone about, you know,
Copy !req
345. who'd be rigging him and
the girl on the phone said,
Copy !req
346. "Oh, you know,
don't worry.
Copy !req
347. We have the top riggers
from LA coming in,
Copy !req
348. so don't worry about that.
Yeah, it's totally safe."
Copy !req
349. He never questioned,
ever, his safety because
Copy !req
350. he assumed that this
billion-dollar company was
Copy !req
351. certainly going to make sure
that they hired
Copy !req
352. the best in the business...
Copy !req
353. Which they did not.
Copy !req
354. Life on the road is
never-ending for Owen and
Copy !req
355. his family, and on
May 22nd, 1999,
Copy !req
356. he travels to Kansas City
for Over the Edge.
Copy !req
357. It was a Saturday
when he left.
Copy !req
358. He was rushing out
the door, you know,
Copy !req
359. just embarking on
another long,
Copy !req
360. 10-day journey away from home.
Copy !req
361. He decided that he was gonna
take Oje to the airport and
Copy !req
362. he'd pick up my mom.
Copy !req
363. She'd drive Oje
back to the house.
Copy !req
364. It wasn't very common where
I would take dad to the airport,
Copy !req
365. but this occasion
was different.
Copy !req
366. And, the last thing
he said to me was, like,
Copy !req
367. "You look after your mom.
Copy !req
368. Take care of your mom and
take care of your sister."
Copy !req
369. And then, he was
walking in with his bag
Copy !req
370. over his shoulder
into the airport.
Copy !req
371. I wasn't sure
what that meant.
Copy !req
372. I honestly didn't
think anything of it.
Copy !req
373. Just seemed like
something you'd say
Copy !req
374. when you were saying goodbye.
Copy !req
375. My name is Jimmy Korderas
and I am a former referee
Copy !req
376. with the WWF, slash, WWE.
Copy !req
377. We got there,
we set up the ring.
Copy !req
378. We got our
match assignments,
Copy !req
379. which was Blue Blazer,
Owen, versus The Godfather.
Copy !req
380. They happened to be together
at ringside and I went over
Copy !req
381. and got with him,
got the finish to the match.
Copy !req
382. And, that was basically it.
It was business as usual.
Copy !req
383. I am The Godfather,
WWE Hall of Fame, Godfather.
Copy !req
384. I remember hanging
out with Owen that day.
Copy !req
385. We talked about the match,
we talked about the finish.
Copy !req
386. Just normal stuff,
hanging out.
Copy !req
387. We were sitting in the arena
and he said that he was
Copy !req
388. getting ready to
practice one of the things,
Copy !req
389. and he did that
and I watched him.
Copy !req
390. I had a feeling that day
that Owen was not his
Copy !req
391. normal, exuberant,
enthusiastic self about
Copy !req
392. what he was doing that night.
Copy !req
393. And I remember
saying something about,
Copy !req
394. you know, "Better you than me.
I don't like heights."
Copy !req
395. He said, "I don't either."
Copy !req
396. I think that he was a
little concerned and, look,
Copy !req
397. he's the one
that's gotta do it.
Copy !req
398. There's nobody that
can do it for him
Copy !req
399. 'cause there's no stunt double.
Copy !req
400. There's a couple
little things he said,
Copy !req
401. and maybe more
specific what he didn't say,
Copy !req
402. led me to believe that he's not
totally down with this thing.
Copy !req
403. On May 23rd, 1999,
Copy !req
404. Over the Edge takes
place at Kemper Arena
Copy !req
405. in Kansas City, Missouri.
Copy !req
406. The event plays to a sold
out crowd and airs live
Copy !req
407. to hundreds of
thousands at home.
Copy !req
408. In preparation for
his dramatic entrance,
Copy !req
409. Owen Hart makes his way
to the top of the arena.
Copy !req
410. That night, myself and Mark
Henry worked Kane and X-Pac
Copy !req
411. for the tag titles
in the first match,
Copy !req
412. and I believe Owen was like
the third or fourth match.
Copy !req
413. I remember talking
to Kane and X-Pac,
Copy !req
414. and seeing Owen walk by,
and this was before our match.
Copy !req
415. From the rafters, Owen changes
into his Blue Blazer costume,
Copy !req
416. and the rigging crew
readies him for his descent.
Copy !req
417. We were
clearing out the ring.
Copy !req
418. I had my left hand on the top
rope and I was kicking debris
Copy !req
419. out of the ring and I was
moving towards the corner.
Copy !req
420. At that time, there was a
promo playing on the screen
Copy !req
421. of the Blue Blazer.
Copy !req
422. Oh, The Godfather,
just saying his name
Copy !req
423. makes my blue blood boil!
Copy !req
424. Hanging in the air,
over 80 feet above the ring,
Copy !req
425. he waits for his cue.
Copy !req
426. And then, here comes the
time for the entrances and
Copy !req
427. I'm looking at my monitor,
looking at my paper...
Copy !req
428. And all of a sudden,
Lawler gives me the elbow.
Copy !req
429. I looked up, and I just
caught Owen
Copy !req
430. come into my line of vision.
Copy !req
431. A blur, phoof.
Copy !req
432. And, I just...
Copy !req
433. I thought I heard screaming.
Copy !req
434. And then, I felt something
brush against the side of
Copy !req
435. my head and my shoulder,
and at the same time,
Copy !req
436. the top rope that I was
holding pulled out of my hand
Copy !req
437. and came back and, like,
jammed my fingers.
Copy !req
438. And, I'm thinking in my head,
what the heck was that?
Copy !req
439. And when I turned
and looked, there was Owen.
Copy !req
440. He was like laying
in the ring, like, face up and,
Copy !req
441. I just started
screaming for help.
Copy !req
442. I thought he hit the
turnbuckle or the ring post...
Copy !req
443. 'cause it really
sounded sick... sick, sick.
Copy !req
444. That's when, you know,
things kind of went sideways.
Copy !req
445. Ah, the Blue Blazer as we know
is Owen Hart, was going to
Copy !req
446. make a very spectacular
superhero-like entrance from
Copy !req
447. the rafters, and something
went terribly wrong here.
Copy !req
448. I was watching
the Pay Per View,
Copy !req
449. as I did at the time, and then
they go to Jim Ross and
Copy !req
450. Jerry Lawler, said that
Owen Hart has had
Copy !req
451. a bad fall or
whatever they said.
Copy !req
452. And, "We'll keep you posted."
I'm like, "What?
Copy !req
453. What do you mean?"
Copy !req
454. And they're not
showing the ring.
Copy !req
455. They're just panning the crowd.
What's going on here?
Copy !req
456. I said, "Something's wrong."
Copy !req
457. I was at the gorilla station
behind the curtain and
Copy !req
458. somebody said, "Owen fell.
Owen just fell."
Copy !req
459. And I went, "Owen fell? What?"
He goes, "Owen just fell!"
Copy !req
460. I kept getting these
alerts in my headset,
Copy !req
461. "We need another update,"
Copy !req
462. but I'm not getting any
updatable material.
Copy !req
463. And JR's, you know,
filling time on live television
Copy !req
464. while a guy's laying
there in the ring, dying.
Copy !req
465. Well, it's one of the most
shocking things I've ever seen.
Copy !req
466. This is not a— your typical
wrestling story line.
Copy !req
467. This is a real situation.
Copy !req
468. I said, "----, I've never
seen anything like that...
Copy !req
469. not on any
wrestling program,
Copy !req
470. not on any
television program.
Copy !req
471. It's never happened before."
Copy !req
472. It was Jerry Lawler
who came back,
Copy !req
473. he came through the curtain,
and Jerry was,
Copy !req
474. he was as white as a ghost.
And his exact words were,
Copy !req
475. "I think he's dead."
And we're like, "Who?"
Copy !req
476. And he was like, "Owen."
Copy !req
477. And then it was
just like:
Copy !req
478. Jerry Lawler back
joining me here.
Copy !req
479. King, I was just
reiterating to the fans
Copy !req
480. this is not a part of the show.
Copy !req
481. We're here to
entertain and have fun,
Copy !req
482. but this is neither.
Copy !req
483. No, it's...
it doesn't look good at all.
Copy !req
484. I knew something was
wrong because Lawler,
Copy !req
485. his face just
became ashen white.
Copy !req
486. Like he had just seen death.
Copy !req
487. And, they wheeled Owen past us
to go to the ambulance and...
Copy !req
488. That's, that's not even an
image I want to even
Copy !req
489. bring up in my head anymore.
Just, it's...
Copy !req
490. that was not what
I wanted to see.
Copy !req
491. When they wheeled him
through the curtain and
Copy !req
492. they put him in the ambulance,
I remember just being in shock.
Copy !req
493. When they did
wheel him back,
Copy !req
494. he was like blue,
and I remember that.
Copy !req
495. And I remember crying too.
Copy !req
496. They didn't want to
stop the show so,
Copy !req
497. Jeff Jarrett, who was
real close with Owen,
Copy !req
498. did a promo
and he was in tears.
Copy !req
499. Owen Hart,
I'm praying for you, buddy.
Copy !req
500. And I am, too.
Copy !req
501. In the chaos, Kevin Dunn,
Executive Producer,
Copy !req
502. thought that I
had been told that,
Copy !req
503. what the deal was.
Copy !req
504. And, I said, "Kevin,
nobody's told us anything.
Copy !req
505. What is the update?"
And he said...
Copy !req
506. "He's dead.
And you're back in 10, 9..."
Copy !req
507. And, I have the...
Copy !req
508. unfortunate responsibility
of letting everyone know
Copy !req
509. that Owen Hart has died.
Copy !req
510. Owen Hart has tragically
died from that accident...
Copy !req
511. here tonight.
Copy !req
512. On the camera,
what people saw,
Copy !req
513. was a result of 10 seconds
of preparation.
Copy !req
514. Didn't know what to say.
And it wasn't story line.
Copy !req
515. I got very numb
after that night.
Copy !req
516. My hands were shaking,
my stomach was hurting.
Copy !req
517. I was just, I was...
damn, man.
Copy !req
518. And they went on
with the show.
Copy !req
519. When Owen was— Shit.
Copy !req
520. When Owen was falling,
everybody that was there
Copy !req
521. said the last thing that
he yelled was, "Look out."
Copy !req
522. A guy's falling from 100 feet,
and he knows he's done,
Copy !req
523. and the last thing
he's thinking is, "Look out.
Copy !req
524. I don t want to hurt you."
You know, that's—
Copy !req
525. It was —-ing foolish,
it was unnecessary.
Copy !req
526. It didn't need to happen.
Copy !req
527. During a live
Pay Per View event,
Copy !req
528. Owen Hart was set to make
a dramatic entrance
Copy !req
529. from the rafters of
Kemper Arena...
Copy !req
530. when something would
go terribly wrong.
Copy !req
531. The phone rang and it said,
"Unknown Caller,"
Copy !req
532. which was always like
kind of code for, like,
Copy !req
533. that's Owen on,
on the road.
Copy !req
534. And so, then I picked it up in
a hurry and I was like, "Hello?"
Copy !req
535. And then, you know, I heard
this voice, like, "Martha?"
Copy !req
536. And I said, "Owen!"
And then he said,
Copy !req
537. "No, this isn't Owen.
This is Vince McMahon."
Copy !req
538. You know, Owen was
such a prankster,
Copy !req
539. and I'm like, "Oh, Owen..."
Copy !req
540. And he's like, "No, it,
it's Vince McMahon."
Copy !req
541. And then he said,
"I'm calling you because,
Copy !req
542. you know, I have to tell
you that Owen's had a fall."
Copy !req
543. "Well, what do you mean?"
Like, "How far did he fall?
Copy !req
544. What's wrong with him?
Is he conscious?"
Copy !req
545. Like, and then he was like,
"I don't know. I don't know."
Copy !req
546. "Well, I need to talk
to somebody
Copy !req
547. who's got some answers."
And so, then he said,
Copy !req
548. "Well, someone will be
calling you right away."
Copy !req
549. Then, the next call that I
got was from the doctor from
Copy !req
550. the Truman Medical Centre.
So, the doctor, you know...
Copy !req
551. So, the doctor, he said,
Copy !req
552. "Are you home alone?"
And I said, "Yes."
Copy !req
553. And, he said,
"Well, you know...
Copy !req
554. we should really fly you
down to get this kind of news."
Copy !req
555. And, you know, he was
kind of going through all of
Copy !req
556. these details, and then,
I said to him,
Copy !req
557. "You know, doctor, could you
just get to the end and just
Copy !req
558. tell me what the
end result is?"
Copy !req
559. And he said...
Copy !req
560. "I, I tried. I did everything I
could to save his life,
Copy !req
561. but I couldn't."
Copy !req
562. He said, "I'm so sorry,
but your husband has died."
Copy !req
563. And then, I just, you know,
I just doubled over and
Copy !req
564. I just screamed, "No, no, no!"
Copy !req
565. You know, of course all the
"no's" in the world
Copy !req
566. weren't going to
change anything.
Copy !req
567. Whose belt is that, Oje?
Dad's.
Copy !req
568. Dad's. And what is it?
What kind of belt?
Copy !req
569. Champion belt.
Champion belt.
Copy !req
570. World Tag Team Champion.
Copy !req
571. My memory of May 23rd begins
in my basement of my house.
Copy !req
572. I was with my one neighbor
and they said
Copy !req
573. my mom was crying,
and really crying.
Copy !req
574. And I was like, "Well, what
is my mom crying about?"
Copy !req
575. And, she said... I don't
know why your mom's crying,
Copy !req
576. but she's crying a lot.
Copy !req
577. I went upstairs and I
opened the door and
Copy !req
578. I walked through the foyer
and into the kitchen,
Copy !req
579. and there my mom
was screaming,
Copy !req
580. "What am I going to do?"
Copy !req
581. And, I really did not have
any conclusions drawn about
Copy !req
582. why she was so
hysterically sad.
Copy !req
583. And I just remember,
like, it was just such a
Copy !req
584. moment of truth where, I just,
like, saw so clearly like
Copy !req
585. there were just two
paths in front of me.
Copy !req
586. One total destruction and
one of like reconstruction,
Copy !req
587. you know, and I was like,
I can t let this destroy
Copy !req
588. everything that
we've worked for and,
Copy !req
589. and let everything
fall apart.
Copy !req
590. You know, all I could
think of were Oje and Athena
Copy !req
591. because I was like,
their whole lives are
Copy !req
592. gonna be different now and
all they have is me.
Copy !req
593. That's it. They're three and
seven years old so,
Copy !req
594. I need to make sure that,
you know, somehow,
Copy !req
595. I survive for them.
Copy !req
596. Then, mom has to take me
upstairs 'cause it's bedtime.
Copy !req
597. And, we sit at the
foot of the bed, on the side.
Copy !req
598. Nobody prepares for this,
but she did it.
Copy !req
599. And, she said,
"Your dad's dead."
Copy !req
600. She said, "He's died.
Copy !req
601. He fell and he died,
but he didn't feel any pain."
Copy !req
602. That memory has played in
my mind millions of times.
Copy !req
603. I remember that night,
all three of us slept in
Copy !req
604. the same bed and I just
looked at the roof.
Copy !req
605. I just looked at
the roof and
Copy !req
606. I tried not to hear
my mom sniffling.
Copy !req
607. I don't think either
of us slept that night.
Copy !req
608. Martha and her family begin
to make final preparations
Copy !req
609. as Owen's body is
transported to Calgary.
Copy !req
610. I remember the
funeral director saying,
Copy !req
611. you know, "Are you ready?
Are you ready?"
Copy !req
612. And I said,
"Yep, I'm ready."
Copy !req
613. Soon as he opened the door,
I just remembered being
Copy !req
614. absolutely horrified by
what Owen looked like.
Copy !req
615. I screamed so loud and
I tried to run away,
Copy !req
616. and Bret just bear hugged me
and then we just sort of
Copy !req
617. did this weird little, like,
inch dance towards the casket.
Copy !req
618. And then, you know, I just
took it all in and then
Copy !req
619. I was comforted by his hair
'cause his hair was the same,
Copy !req
620. and then, I just thought,
"Oh, you know what,
Copy !req
621. the person that I loved in life,
you know, I loved in death too."
Copy !req
622. And then I just
wasn't afraid anymore.
Copy !req
623. On May 31st, 1999,
Owen Hart is laid to rest.
Copy !req
624. Owen Hart, known as the
Blue Blazer in the ring,
Copy !req
625. was killed last week when a
stunt went horribly wrong
Copy !req
626. at a match in Missouri.
Copy !req
627. Taking part in a tearful
farewell were the
Copy !req
628. sports' superstars, politicians,
and a huge crowd of fans.
Copy !req
629. We were riding in the
funeral procession and there
Copy !req
630. were Canadians pulled off
on the side of the road,
Copy !req
631. letting us pass,
like Owen was a head of state.
Copy !req
632. It was amazing to see how
revered he was in that town,
Copy !req
633. in that country,
and in our business.
Copy !req
634. There were so many people
that came to the service and
Copy !req
635. we didn't have room
for everybody inside,
Copy !req
636. but there were over
1,000 people outside of
Copy !req
637. the funeral home just to listen.
Copy !req
638. We, we broadcast it, we piped
it out through speakers.
Copy !req
639. I am a
very forgiving person,
Copy !req
640. and I'm not bitter or angry.
Copy !req
641. But there will be a
day of reckoning,
Copy !req
642. and this is my
final promise to Owen.
Copy !req
643. When you live in a
world of make believe and
Copy !req
644. something so real happens,
you want to hammer that home.
Copy !req
645. Although I didn't know exactly
what had happened yet,
Copy !req
646. that I was gonna
get to the bottom of it,
Copy !req
647. and that I would have
my day of reckoning.
Copy !req
648. After Owen Hart's funeral,
his widow, Martha,
Copy !req
649. travels to Kansas City to
try and piece together
Copy !req
650. the events surrounding
her husband's death.
Copy !req
651. I saw my mom transform into a
completely different person,
Copy !req
652. but she became
a fighter.
Copy !req
653. That means I have to
go to Kansas City,
Copy !req
654. I have to see the arena
that he plummeted in.
Copy !req
655. We actually went
up on the catwalk.
Copy !req
656. She needed to
see it firsthand.
Copy !req
657. She needed to,
as hard as it was, to know.
Copy !req
658. And she had to go and take us
so that we would never
Copy !req
659. have to wonder, and that
we would never grow old
Copy !req
660. or thinking,
"Ah, if only I'd known."
Copy !req
661. I really didn't want to
leave any stone unturned so,
Copy !req
662. I consciously chose to go on
that catwalk and to walk to
Copy !req
663. the exact spot
where he fell.
Copy !req
664. From my understanding,
Owen had to make his way
Copy !req
665. down that little catwalk
to get to the point
Copy !req
666. where he needed to be.
We walked right to the spot.
Copy !req
667. You're literally right
at the top of the arena.
Copy !req
668. And when I looked
over that cliff,
Copy !req
669. into the abyss
down below, I saw...
Copy !req
670. Distance between where
we were and the ground,
Copy !req
671. and knowing that
he just, like,
Copy !req
672. that he went out there.
Copy !req
673. I can't even imagine the fear
that he would have been
Copy !req
674. feeling in those
final minutes, like,
Copy !req
675. those seconds,
but still not forfeiting the
Copy !req
676. opportunity to bring us
the life that we had.
Copy !req
677. So, ultimate sacrifice.
Copy !req
678. It was, you know,
very disheartening for me
Copy !req
679. to know that that's the last
things that he saw,
Copy !req
680. and how hopeless that
feeling would have been
Copy !req
681. to know that there's
nothing you could do.
Copy !req
682. Your life was over
and you knew it.
Copy !req
683. I have all these nagging
suspicions that, you know,
Copy !req
684. Owen was the most
cautious person I'd ever known.
Copy !req
685. He'd never take, you know,
any sort of uncalculated risk
Copy !req
686. and, how did
this happen?
Copy !req
687. There must be
negligence, like, you know,
Copy !req
688. someone doesn't just fall
from the top of an arena
Copy !req
689. and die and,
something went wrong.
Copy !req
690. Like,
something's wrong here.
Copy !req
691. And so, what evidence did the
Kansas City policy show you?
Copy !req
692. They brought everything in and
they put it all out on a table.
Copy !req
693. And, then we kind of went
through everything slowly and
Copy !req
694. that's the first
time that I saw the clip.
Copy !req
695. This is some of the
legal documents and...
Copy !req
696. this is actually
the clip that...
Copy !req
697. held Owen.
Copy !req
698. This is the actual clip.
Copy !req
699. It's a clip meant for the
sole use of sail boats.
Copy !req
700. And, how it's designed is,
it's designed to release
Copy !req
701. on load so, when you
have a load on it,
Copy !req
702. and then,
when you just click it,
Copy !req
703. then it just opens -
- it opens immediately
Copy !req
704. because the design is to let
the mast down on a sailboat.
Copy !req
705. It's this quick
release right here,
Copy !req
706. six pounds of pressure
to release it, like that.
Copy !req
707. That's it. This is what
was holding him,
Copy !req
708. this little thing right there.
That's it.
Copy !req
709. When I first saw the clip,
the very first time, I gasped.
Copy !req
710. And, I... was so upset.
Copy !req
711. It was just appalling.
Copy !req
712. We looked at statement to
really piece together
Copy !req
713. what we felt Owen's
last day was like.
Copy !req
714. Just hours before the Over
the Edge Pay Per View event,
Copy !req
715. Owen was approached by the
riggers to rehearse the stunt.
Copy !req
716. They had approached Owen and
asked him to do a rehearsal
Copy !req
717. and then he said,
"No, it's okay. I, I got it."
Copy !req
718. Bobby Talbert said, "Well,
but it's a different setup,"
Copy !req
719. and so, Owen said, "Okay."
Copy !req
720. To my understanding,
they did it.
Copy !req
721. I don't know, to this day,
if they did it with the
Copy !req
722. quick snap shackle or
the locking carabiner.
Copy !req
723. I have a sense that it was a
locking carabiner because
Copy !req
724. he didn't release himself.
Copy !req
725. The way Owen had
been rigged previously,
Copy !req
726. they felt, was—
looked a bit clumsy,
Copy !req
727. a bit sloppy and,
what they wanted was this,
Copy !req
728. like, quick release.
Copy !req
729. Like, soon as you hit the
ground you just unrelease
Copy !req
730. and you're ready
to go, immediately.
Copy !req
731. And so,
that's what they wanted.
Copy !req
732. It was to save, like,
two seconds of the setup.
Copy !req
733. Bobby Talbert should
have never been
Copy !req
734. in charge of rigging anybody.
He had no experience.
Copy !req
735. Do you remember
what you came to learn were
Copy !req
736. the rigger's final
instructions to Owen?
Copy !req
737. They said, "As long as
you don't pull this cord,
Copy !req
738. you'll be okay."
Copy !req
739. And, he never
pulled the cord.
Copy !req
740. After I'd gathered enough
information about
Copy !req
741. what had happened, I was so
firm in my belief that
Copy !req
742. there was absolute
negligence involved,
Copy !req
743. hand over first.
Copy !req
744. Everything was
pointing in that direction.
Copy !req
745. With my full authority,
my legal counsel filed a
Copy !req
746. wrongful death
lawsuit against WWF,
Copy !req
747. Vince McMahon, and all
others I believe are
Copy !req
748. responsible for my
husband's death.
Copy !req
749. I was suing Vince
in Kansas City,
Copy !req
750. and he wanted the case moved
to Connecticut because
Copy !req
751. in Connecticut, there are no
punitive damages awarded.
Copy !req
752. He chose to sue me,
the widow,
Copy !req
753. which caused a lot of grief.
Copy !req
754. And on top of it, he was
manipulating Owen's family.
Copy !req
755. There were some people in
the family that were for it,
Copy !req
756. and some people
that were against it
Copy !req
757. when the lawsuit came up.
Copy !req
758. I'm sure a lot of shock and
trepidation amongst the core
Copy !req
759. Hart family that you can't
sue the most powerful man
Copy !req
760. in wrestling because
their, their family life had
Copy !req
761. centered around
professional wrestling.
Copy !req
762. And, there was still a lot of
other people in the family
Copy !req
763. that probably thought
that Vince McMahon was gonna
Copy !req
764. be good to them
in the future.
Copy !req
765. The Hart family,
they were...
Copy !req
766. not supportive of my
lawsuit against WWF.
Copy !req
767. Some members were silent.
Copy !req
768. And then, other ones
actively worked against me,
Copy !req
769. stealing my legal documents,
giving them to the defense.
Copy !req
770. So, they basically
had our playbook.
Copy !req
771. So, that was very
heartbreaking for me,
Copy !req
772. you know, because
I said to them, you know,
Copy !req
773. "You don't have
to support me,
Copy !req
774. but please just
don't work against me."
Copy !req
775. First of all,
I resent your tone.
Copy !req
776. No, no, I resent
your tone, lady, okay.
Copy !req
777. You know, this was
a tragic accident.
Copy !req
778. Her fight for justice
was an uphill battle,
Copy !req
779. to say the least, a real
David and Goliath story.
Copy !req
780. I do think that the measurable
neglect that had to go into
Copy !req
781. something so catastrophic
cannot be overlooked.
Copy !req
782. This tragedy is the magnitude
at which it's at because
Copy !req
783. it was completely preventable.
Copy !req
784. This was a guy
who was 240 pounds.
Copy !req
785. There could have been a
rigging team that knew
Copy !req
786. what they were doing,
and they didn't because
Copy !req
787. it was more expensive.
Copy !req
788. After a
year-long legal battle
Copy !req
789. between Martha Hart and the WWF,
Copy !req
790. a settlement is reached in
the amount of $18 million.
Copy !req
791. For me, I didn't
care about the money.
Copy !req
792. It wasn't about
money for me.
Copy !req
793. I wanted this
case to go to trial.
Copy !req
794. That was my biggest,
you know,
Copy !req
795. thrust from start to finish was
that I didn't want a settlement.
Copy !req
796. I was looking for justice.
Copy !req
797. I was looking for
accountability.
Copy !req
798. All my mom was trying to
do was preserve the dignity
Copy !req
799. that my dad had,
and give her kids
Copy !req
800. the best life they could have.
Copy !req
801. The settlement
provides some closure,
Copy !req
802. but the WWF's decision to
continue the show after
Copy !req
803. Owen's fatal fall remains
controversial to this day.
Copy !req
804. How did this happen?
He didn't commit suicide.
Copy !req
805. Was their foul play?
Is it an accident?
Copy !req
806. We don't know so,
leave everything the way it is
Copy !req
807. 'til we figure this out.
Copy !req
808. No, we'll just go ahead and
have four or five more matches.
Copy !req
809. That they didn't stop
Kansas City was bullshit.
Copy !req
810. The fact that Vince just
discarded Owen like he was a
Copy !req
811. piece of garbage and scraped
his dead body off the mat
Copy !req
812. and sent wrestlers out to
wrestler on a ring
Copy !req
813. where Owen's blood was...
Copy !req
814. And, it even had
broken some of the boards,
Copy !req
815. Owen's fall, so there
was a dip in the ring,
Copy !req
816. and they could
feel where he fell.
Copy !req
817. The police should
have stopped the show,
Copy !req
818. and they should have
investigated immediately.
Copy !req
819. This was a
potential crime scene.
Copy !req
820. There's been a
death here and, you know,
Copy !req
821. we can't just let
the show go on.
Copy !req
822. There's nothing that
I've ever experienced that
Copy !req
823. compares to Owen Hart's
death and having to
Copy !req
824. live with it every day since.
Copy !req
825. It was the worst moment
of my wrestling career.
Copy !req
826. Maybe the worst
moment of my life.
Copy !req
827. Here's a vibrant guy that
died unnecessarily before
Copy !req
828. he could ever get to the
thick of his career,
Copy !req
829. who had a
beautiful family and,
Copy !req
830. and a wonderful mum and
dad who are so proud of him
Copy !req
831. because the youngest Hart
had stepped away from the pack
Copy !req
832. and he had
made his own way,
Copy !req
833. with his own style,
his own uniqueness,
Copy !req
834. and they were
all proud of him.
Copy !req
835. He was popular
everywhere he went,
Copy !req
836. kind of introduced
this high flying style
Copy !req
837. all around the world.
He was a pioneer.
Copy !req
838. He could be serious,
he could be funny.
Copy !req
839. He could be a
technician in the ring,
Copy !req
840. he could be a high flyer
in the ring.
Copy !req
841. He was great at everything.
Copy !req
842. Had Owen not died in '99,
even though he was getting a
Copy !req
843. little bit disenfranchised
with the wrestling business,
Copy !req
844. think about who was coming
into the business and
Copy !req
845. coming into WWE at that time.
Copy !req
846. In less than a year,
Guererro was there,
Copy !req
847. Malenka was there,
Edge, Christian, Kurt Angle.
Copy !req
848. Owen would have had a huge
career resurgence because
Copy !req
849. I don't think anybody
could keep up with him
Copy !req
850. in the WWE in 1999.
Copy !req
851. We'll never know how great
he could have been
Copy !req
852. 'cause he was just
approaching that place
Copy !req
853. when he fell from the skies
in Kansas City.
Copy !req
854. If a guy like me is
in the Hall of Fame,
Copy !req
855. there's no damn way that
Owen Hart shouldn't be in ten.
Copy !req
856. Owen Hart should be in every
wrestling Hall of Fame there is
Copy !req
857. because of his talent and
because he belonged there,
Copy !req
858. but he's not in the Hall of Fame
because his wife does not
Copy !req
859. want him celebrated
and glorified by the
Copy !req
860. same company that took
him away from her.
Copy !req
861. I would never allow for
Owen to be recognized by
Copy !req
862. a company that actually is
responsible for his death.
Copy !req
863. I, I would never let the...
Copy !req
864. WWE put his name on
a piece of silver and
Copy !req
865. say that they, they got that.
Copy !req
866. We have built a foundation
that helps put people in homes,
Copy !req
867. that helps single
moms like my mom was,
Copy !req
868. that let kids go to school.
Copy !req
869. This is all done
in his namesake.
Copy !req
870. This has all got Owen Hart
written all over it.
Copy !req
871. This is how communities,
this is how people, society,
Copy !req
872. remembers him, and that's how
we want it to be done.
Copy !req
873. Yeah, he was a wrestler,
but other than that,
Copy !req
874. he was bigger than that.
Copy !req
875. That was just
part of what he was.
Copy !req
876. I want to wish everyone a
Merry Christmas and
Copy !req
877. we're very grateful that we
are as fortunate as we...
Copy !req
878. have everything that
we could ever ask for,
Copy !req
879. and most importantly, our health
and our happiness together.
Copy !req
880. I feel like if my dad had
never been in wrestling,
Copy !req
881. he'd still be here.
Copy !req
882. And so, I've always
blamed, like, wrestling for not,
Copy !req
883. like, everything
that's happened.
Copy !req
884. It's just all
wrestling's fault.
Copy !req
885. If it never would
have caught his eye,
Copy !req
886. he would have done
something else and then...
Copy !req
887. we would have
all been together.
Copy !req
888. And when I think of him,
I just think happy trails.
Copy !req
889. And, I would have really liked
to have had you around.
Copy !req
890. - Merry Christmas, Oje.
- Merry Christmas, Dad!
Copy !req
891. It would have
been a lot of fun.
Copy !req
892. It was fun.
Thanks for that.
Copy !req
893. There was one person
that always believed in me,
Copy !req
894. and that was Owen.
Copy !req
895. And I think he'd be so thrilled
that Oje is a lawyer and
Copy !req
896. that he's gonna
pursue human rights law,
Copy !req
897. and that Athena's a
journalism graduate and
Copy !req
898. is pursuing that.
Copy !req
899. When you lose
someone that you love,
Copy !req
900. because you still have
all that love for them,
Copy !req
901. I took all that love that
I had for Owen and
Copy !req
902. I created the
Owen Hart Foundation.
Copy !req
903. Our message is that,
you know, be kind to people.
Copy !req
904. Life is hard and everything
we do through the foundation
Copy !req
905. is a reflection of the
type of person that he was,
Copy !req
906. his generosity of spirit and
the kindness that he exuded.
Copy !req
907. So, I think...
Copy !req
908. he would be, you know,
clapping and applauding me,
Copy !req
909. up there in heaven,
and saying,
Copy !req
910. "Well done, you."
Copy !req
