20. for over 10 years, and yet it's very difficult

21. to describe Teddy Hart with any accuracy.

84. As a kid, my dad gave me a camcorder,

86. making really terrible movies with my friends.

89. I went to film school and I just kinda never stopped.

94. These are my hard drives from filming Teddy Hart for 10 years.

95. I was gonna make a reality TV show, but that did not happen.

97. She was really vibrant, and she laughed and smiled a lot.

98. I ran down there, and then I'm like,

99. oh, shit, what if there's, like, seals, right?

111. and I'm trying to figure out what role I play in all this.

112. I've been trying really hard to figure out what happened to her.

113. I don't know if Teddy did something to her,

114. or if Teddy has information about what happened to her,

115. or maybe the evidence of what happened to her

116. is hidden away on one of these hard drives.

117. I'm glad you guys got to be here with us.

120. All I really know is that if she had never met Teddy in the first place,

121. I'm pretty sure she'd be alive right now with her kids.

123. To understand how this all happened,

124. we have to go back to 2012,

125. three years before I even met Samantha.

126. That's when I first started filming Teddy Hart,

127. and this whole crazy mess got started.

128. I hadn't had any big projects before I met Teddy Hart.

129. I had done a couple of short, very low-budget documentaries,

130. and I had spent most of my time working as a journalist

131. in television, you know, doing news stories...

132. usually, like, the arts report for the community TV station, this sort of stuff.

133. Basically, my job was to film little stories all throughout Alberta,

134. and I was always looking for the weirdest stories.

135. And someone had said, "You should check out these independent wrestlers."

136. I don't know anything about wrestlers,

137. but I thought I'll check it out,

138. maybe there's a good story there, and there was.

139. This next tag team match is one fall.

141. Independent wrestlers do these little shows in,

142. like, gymnasiums, in community centers.

143. So, I filmed some stories about these wrestlers.

144. I am Big Jesse Youngblood. I am bigger than you.

145. The bigger they are, the harder they will fall.

146. They put on a costume and a huge persona

147. and become somebody else for a night.

148. I am the world's greatest swimsuit model!

149. The Tattooed Terminators are here!

150. The dream is over. The nightmare is about to begin.

151. They come from every walk of life.

152. Oh!

153. But usually behind the scenes, they're just, like, really nice,

154. big, Teddy bear kinda guys.

155. I gotta go home, bandage myself up,

156. and then I go to work like a normal guy.

157. Wrestling is like a very repetitive soap opera.

158. Each episode is sort of the same.

159. You've got a good guy who's a baby face,

160. you've got a bad guy who's the heel...

161. and they do what's called a work...

162. taking a scripted performance

163. and convincing the audience that it's real.

164. At the very end, there's always a come-from-behind victory.

165. I asked these wrestlers, like, how did you become a wrestler,

166. and they told me that you had to go to a wrestling school.

167. You just come through here...

168. So, I meet this wrestling promoter in Alberta who says,

169. "You gotta meet this guy."

170. "He runs a wrestling school out of his house, you know,

171. right here in Edmonton, and he's pretty crazy."

172. "He's known for being outrageous."

173. "And his name is Teddy Hart."

174. You guys are gonna look like my prostitutes when I'm done with you.

175. And of course I said yes.

176. I sent him a text,

177. and he just asked me to come to his mansion to meet him.

178. I'm not sure if I would have used the term "mansion,"

179. but I pull up and I just start recording everything.

180. There is weed paraphernalia everywhere.

181. Probably 15 people were there.

182. And about 50 to 100 cats.

183. Who's he going after?

184. In the middle of all this is Teddy Hart.

185. Remember, this cat will fucking kill the other cats in this house.

186. If he catches this one, he'll try to kill it.

187. Just like in the jungle.

188. I never realized cats would start to exhibit

189. all those qualities, but they do.

190. Just, like, they revert back.

191. I go, like, "Teddy, why do you have 50 cats running around?"

192. and he explains to me that he's a pro wrestler,

193. and his side hustle is breeding

194. and selling and training Persian show cats.

195. He offered to sell me one for $500.

196. I'm like a little kid.

197. I like the puffy face and the fur,

198. and I also like the way people look at the cat.

199. I like Persian show cats because they remind me of a girl a lot.

200. Because they're a little bit more work than the average cat,

201. and it takes a little more love and time and affection

202. to get them to do what you want them to do.

203. But if you can win 'em over, to me,

204. they're the most loyal cat in the world and the most intelligent.

205. And I've had all...

206. Teddy starts talking about himself,

207. and he doesn't stop talking,

208. honestly, until I leave probably two hours later.

209. You guys know I'm a clothing designer, so I make...

210. I had... I had over 150 of these outfits originally made,

211. but I design clothing, so I had... I got this.

212. I did a double shooting star press and I land flat on a trampoline,

213. and I break my back, almost.

214. I couldn't move, I probably pissed my pants a little bit,

215. and I was sitting there paralyzed.

216. And my ex was with me, Kim,

217. and she doesn't give a fuck about me at all.

218. She goes, "Hurry up, we gotta go."

219. She's pregnant.

220. Teddy was always smoking massive, giant blunts.

221. So, he would drift off into weird things.

222. They always talk about aliens coming back on Earth.

223. What if alien was just thinking differently,

224. and the human mind is so powerful that maybe aliens

225. have been here from fucking day one,

226. they never left the planet.

227. Maybe there's a whole bunch of humans that are half-breed aliens

228. because they think outside the box.

229. He certainly had a lot of people around him.

231. So, you and Jill can mother her and roll me a blunt.

232. They all seem to really respect him,

233. and he seemed to control a certain amount of

234. power over everybody.

238. - Oh, what's up, camera? - Oh, yeah.

241. Teddy Hart's wife, Fay, appeared to be the cat caregiver...

242. the cat midwife.

243. They're my kids.

244. I know what every one of their sounds sounds like,

245. I can tell which room they're in, who's fighting who.

246. Who's being a brat, who's in a bad mood that day.

247. Yeah, they keep me on my toes, that's for sure.

248. And here he is.

250. Oh, yeah, she is trying to, too... you motherfucker.

251. She's having her baby.

252. - Oh, she just had a baby? - Yeah, yeah, yeah.

255. I actually have a guy that I met at the airport.

256. He makes all-natural cure for diabetes,

257. and he does it from the cat's placenta.

258. He buys 'em off me for 10 bucks each.

259. I knew that there was gonna be a good, compelling story here.

260. It was too weird not to be.

261. But how had I never heard of this guy before?

262. Teddy Hart was born in 1980,

263. and he comes from a dynasty, a bona fide dynasty.

264. The Harts are wrestling royalty.

265. His uncles were professional wrestling superstars.

266. We're talking about Jim "The Anvil" Knight-Hart,

267. "The British Bulldog", Davey Boy Smith,

268. and the most popular being Bret Hart.

269. He was the biggest wrestler in the world at that time.

270. I mean, he was a global superstar.

271. You talk about heartache by the numbers,

272. you're gonna have heartache by the numbers.

273. You got Keith, you got The Rocket, you got Bruce,

274. myself, and you got the big tiger outside.

275. I tell ya, they made one big mistake

276. when they started pulling my father's tail.

277. Wrestling was everything, it was their entire world.

278. The Hart house has professional wrestlers

279. going in and out of it all the time.

280. They would train in the basement,

281. which became known as The Hart Dungeon.

282. Imagine what it would be like

283. for Teddy growing up in this family.

284. It was expected that you were going to become a professional wrestler.

285. Ever since he was a little kid,

286. Teddy trained in The Hart Dungeon.

287. Okay, nice.

288. When he was a teenager,

289. he opened the first wrestling school of his own.

290. This is the place now that I've come up with,

291. a place where kids can learn professional wrestling safely

292. and in the proper surroundings.

293. Out of Calgary, Alberta, Teddy Hart!

294. He was part of the next generation of Hart wrestlers.

295. He was the best of that next generation.

296. Oh, and what a maneuver from Hart!

297. One, two, three, yes!

298. He just had an incredible agility

299. that you don't see in the other family members.

300. Teddy Hart, the nephew of the great Bret Hart

301. He was so good that the WWE had signed him on

302. a contract at 18 years old.

303. He was the youngest wrestler to ever sign a WWE contract.

304. He was also the youngest person fired from a WWE contract.

305. - Whoa, what a... - Whoa!

306. He could have been a great wrestler,

307. except for his complete lack of discipline.

308. The fucking ref's an idiot!

309. One of the most notorious stories

310. about Teddy takes place in 2003.

311. This is after he'd been fired from the WWE.

312. He ends up in Ring of Honor,

313. which is a pretty good wrestling promotion to end up in.

314. So, he had been in this

315. multi-wrestler battle royale cage match,

316. and he started performing off the top of the cage

317. these moonsaults, which is a very high-risk maneuver.

318. The first one was part of the script, but then he started

319. to repeatedly climb back up and do another one...

320. and another one.

321. He'd gone completely off-script.

322. They no longer know what's going on.

323. You know, it obviously shook the wrestlers.

324. So, he starts repeatedly doing these moonsaults,

325. to the point where he starts to make himself sick

326. and just throws up in the ring.

327. It was so outrageous and so disgusting

328. and so upsetting that after the match,

329. he goes back to the locker room

330. and the wrestlers just kick him out of the arena.

331. I mean, physically the wrestlers band together and remove him.

332. That is sort of the height of unprofessionalism.

333. No one wanted to hire him after that.

334. He'd just become too toxic.

335. But it also gains him this notoriety with fans,

336. and he starts to develop more of a cult following after that,

337. because hey, Teddy Hart's gonna be there...

338. who knows what's gonna happen?

339. - Whoa, what a... - Whoa!

340. That maneuver!

342. Ten years ago, the recipe for a good reality show

343. was you needed to have one crazy character

344. that just elevated the crazy of that universe.

345. So, when I met Teddy, I was like, this is it.

346. This is Mr. Crazy.

348. I realized that this could be my big break in television.

349. This could be a really commercial reality TV show.

350. It had all the makings of a classic reality show product.

351. It had the Honey Boo-Boo element,

352. it had the "Jersey Shore" element,

353. it had wrestling, and it had cats.

354. What I didn't realize is that years later,

355. Teddy Hart's ex-girlfriend Samantha Fiddler

356. would go missing,

357. and that the footage I was about the shoot...

359. It may have set the whole thing in motion.

372. I didn't know what I was doing,

373. but I knew if I kept pointing a camera at him,

374. the story would eventually emerge.

395. of his wrestling persona and just be a real person.

399. When I met Teddy, it was a time in my life

400. when I had decided I didn't wanna become

401. a professional, you know, TV producer.

402. I wanted to make something that could have broad appeal.

403. My abilities are some of the best in the world,

404. but my big mouth has cost me.

405. I'm ashamed sometimes of things I've said in the past.

406. But is that some reason to not have a career in wrestling?

407. Teddy had a great desire to be on television,

408. and a lot of it, I think, had to do with him wanting

409. to find redemption with his audience.

410. He had screwed up a lot of times in the public eye,

411. and he wanted to come back into the fold.

412. So, my idea was to film him as he finds his redemption.

413. For fucking 10 years, I've been trying to impress Bret Hart,

414. and I'm hoping he passes the torch to me.

415. This is the year. I got one year to impress him.

416. I don't know if I can do it.

417. That's why I asked you to videotape it,

418. because there's no better fucking guy to videotape than me, failing or making it.

419. This is the most impossible mission of Rocky Balboa,

420. but a real-life story of it.

441. I was curious about all these wrestlers

442. in Teddy Hart's house/wrestling school.

443. I believe Teddy's students were paying good money to come

444. and be in his wrestling school,

445. but looking back, there really wasn't very much wrestling

446. at the so-called wrestling school.

447. What I'd like to do, guys, is I have my student,

448. and he's running the show here with my cats.

449. If you can't take care of my fucking cats,

450. then I can't take care of you.

451. I was playing around on Facebook,

452. and I saw an advertisement for the New Hart Dungeon,

453. and as a wrestling fan, that just grabbed my attention.

454. It was $2,000 a month for the wrestling school.

455. I would stay at the mansion, and in return,

456. I would get things like learning professional wrestling from Teddy Hart.

457. One of the first things he said is you have to start

458. earning your way towards stepping into the ring

459. for the first time.

460. I spent the first two weeks there going to get him groceries,

461. blunts for his joints, go and grab his weed...

462. I became a gopher.

463. That's for sure. I got one right here.

464. It's like he needed a personal assistant.

465. A month in, I still hadn't stepped

466. into a professional wrestling ring.

467. The cat-breeding business isn't just a source

468. of income to Teddy, it's a part of the Teddy Hart brand.

470. Teddy tells me that he's a professional cat juggler.

471. He juggles cats.

472. This guy loves doing backflips. Watch how nice his form is.

473. So, he'll go up... yeah, see, no claws.

474. He loves doing that.

475. I certainly asked Teddy, like, does this hurt the cats?

476. And Teddy was like, "No, lookit,

477. the cats are super chilled out, they seem to enjoy it."

478. And he said that he was a professional cat trainer

479. and he worked with them to teach them to do this.

480. And that appeared to be the case.

481. This is called the phantom chair.

482. He'll just sit there.

483. I thought it would give the show I was making an edge.

484. Nobody in reality TV was juggling cats.

485. I cut together a one-minute pitch video

486. that I could use to sell to broadcasters.

490. I put so much work into this project,

491. and I was really proud of it.

492. I had a whole season mapped out following the redemption.

493. I was gonna have my cousin in it,

497. Most people were saying,

499. It totally hurt my feelings.

500. I've just wasted a lot of time and energy, and I have no funding.

513. and I'd invested too much time and money and energy into it.

519. But I thought about it, and she brought a very beautiful woman,

526. was the access I had to Teddy's life.

527. Teddy was sort of like, "Do you wanna see this, do you wanna see this,"

528. and I was always like, "Sure, yeah, of course."

529. Teddy was always bragging about how he was polyamorous

530. and he had this crazy relationship,

531. and he was like, "You can film it, if you want,"

532. and I was like, "Absolutely, I wanna film that."

533. You guys just focus on each other,

534. and then at some point in time, Fay, you just kinda mix it up a bit.

535. This is my smoking-hot girlfriend, Michelle.

536. This is the first time I met Michelle.

537. Craziness in my house, man.

538. When Teddy introduced me to Michelle,

539. he told me that this was his girlfriend

540. and that they were in a polyamorous relationship

541. with Teddy and Fay, his wife.

542. All about health and wellness and pretty ladies.

614. he turned his phone off, and he's apparently broke.

615. Can't afford gas to drive to the shoot, and I don't care.

635. I've filmed for almost two and a half years,

636. I re-edited the project,

637. and I put so much work into my pitch to broadcasters.

638. Teddy Hart was the youngest wrestler ever signed to the WWE.

639. He's also the youngest wrestler ever fired from the WWE.

640. But now he lives in a mansion filled with wrestlers, models,

641. and 50 Persian show cats, and he's about to make his comeback.

642. This one broadcaster was interested,

643. and they're like, "We'll give you a hundred grand,"

644. and I was like, "This is amazing."

645. I've never had more than, like, $300 to make a film before.

646. The very next day, right before we signed the agreement,

647. I wake up and I have a text message saying,

648. "Read the paper."

649. Teddy's being accused of rape and illegal confinement.

650. Then the news article sort of says

651. that Teddy's on the run from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

652. I'm like, "What? Where is Teddy?"

653. And then I read down, and there's these two women in it,

654. and they're accusing him of all this crazy shit.

655. Then it dawns on me...

656. the women that are charging him with this

657. are the women I've been filming.

658. When they charged Teddy with rape,

659. the broadcaster calls us and says,

660. "We're not making the show now,

661. because your main star is an alleged rapist."

662. I'm not necessarily proud of any of this behavior.

663. I was very parasitic.

664. But my first thought was, there goes my TV show.

666. I tried calling Teddy,

667. and Teddy is apparently on the run in the States from the RCMP.

668. The RCMP is the equivalent of the FBI in Canada.

669. So then I call up Fay and Michelle,

670. and like, what is going on, guys?

671. And they are pissed. They are mad.

672. Fay and Michelle were living together at this time,

673. and I asked to film an interview with them to document

674. whatever was unfolding before me.

717. The incidents... I think one of the incidents

718. that I recently reported that I had proof of,

719. which was the latest actual rape,

720. and this one was very bad, because this was the first time

721. that I'd actually been bawling my eyes out crying,

722. and, like, pushing... pushing him off, and saying, "No, no, no."

723. That was the worst one that I ever experienced.

724. We had waited for Ted to leave town to escape,

725. and after about a month of him threatening us and not stopping,

726. he finally tried to get Fay.

727. And then that's what fueled us to go

728. and get EPOs, restraining orders.

729. We made a statement, and then they kind of told us, you know,

730. it's probably a better thing if you press charges.

732. So, we agreed.

733. - In what? - When was the timing?

734. Yeah, it was. I mean, I... that's the first day I met him.

735. So, he's like, "I have this TV show, and I need some girls."

736. That was the beginning for you.

737. You know, "I'm looking for hot girls for the TV show."

738. And so, it's like, "Yeah."

739. It's like, "This is exactly my field of work."

740. You know, that's what I... my career that I wanna do.

741. So, this was my big break.

742. You know, he had all the hook-ups.

745. I remember when I filmed this I was just...

746. my jaw kinda dropped and I was like, "Whoa."

747. This is one of the moments that I stand back

748. and go I'm not sure what's real and what's not anymore.

749. This is when reality really crumbled for me.

750. Because I have all this footage where they appear to be happy

751. and they appear to be having fun and having all these hijinks.

752. - How are you? - I'm good.

753. They all told me that she was, you know, Teddy's girlfriend,

754. and they were together, and it certainly was the case.

755. It really showed me how maybe everything I'd filmed was a lie.

756. But on the flip side, hearing them talk,

757. I felt like I couldn't walk away.

758. I had a lot of questions, and it did force my resolve

759. to keep filming and to find some answers.

760. After Fay and Michelle's allegations came out

761. in the newspaper, Teddy is off on the run in the U.S.,

762. and he's hiding out in Texas.

763. He's a dual citizen.

764. Nobody is doing anything about this.

765. The police aren't doing anything, nobody.

766. So, I decided to do something about it.

767. I called Teddy, and I'm like, "What did you do, man?"

768. He's like, "I'm 100 percent innocent."

769. So, I agreed to go down there and film with Teddy

770. and get his side of it, so long as he would let me

771. fly him back to Canada so that he could

772. turn himself into the police and face the music.

773. All righty, I just got off the plane.

774. It's apparently 38 degrees Celsius in Fort Worth.

775. This is ridiculous. This is too hot.

776. Teddy is like, "I'll do what you want,

777. "I'll turn myself into the police

778. "if you keep filming me for this reality show,

779. because I wanna be famous."

780. And I'm like, "You bet."

781. So, I keep my camera pointed at him.

827. or whatever, like that rape charge or something.

828. You know, and it's somebody that you're trusting

831. because I know he wouldn't do that.

832. I saw his photo online, that he's a rapist and stuff

833. like that, and I could have easily been, like,

834. "Get the hell out of my house."

835. But I don't believe it, because he hasn't treated me as such...

838. and that's how I judge people, is how they treat me.

839. It just drives me insane, being a woman myself,

840. that I'm sitting here and I'm like, this is why

841. it's so hard to get a rape case, like, even made

844. when they actually haven't been raped.

981. and no excuses, and my fear of being on TV

986. At this point in time,

987. Teddy has a warrant out from his arrest,

988. he's traveling internationally into Canada.

989. He's going to be arrested, and I wanna film that.

992. We gotta go through passport control, and Teddy's cat,

993. Mr. Money, is a PTSD cat, but they've lost the paperwork.

998. And then both Teddy and Machiko are taken off to,

1003. I go out and I sit and I wait for hours,

1004. and I'm wondering, like, what happened to them.

1005. Police officer walks up to me and he doesn't look happy.

1006. He says, "Teddy's gonna be arrested for outstanding charges,

1007. "Machiko is being deported for her assault charges,

1008. "and Mr. Money is being deported too,

1009. because his paperwork isn't in order."

1010. Can I ask what happened?

1011. Because a misdemeanor is still a charge,

1012. they won't let me in the fucking country.

1013. It's stupid.

1014. The assault charge was actually her defending herself

1015. against somebody who was abusing her.

1016. I don't know what happens now.

1017. Suddenly, Teddy comes out of Customs with, you know,

1018. police, and, like, I whipped out my camera

1019. and got a brief shot of it.

1020. He's in handcuffs, he does not look like a happy person,

1021. and he's just immediately taken to an elevator and whisked away.

1022. When filming that, it was very emotional.

1023. There was a lot going on in the airport.

1024. I was pretty on edge and scared.

1025. To see Teddy get cuffed and taken to that elevator

1026. by the police, man, that felt good.

1027. I'd... I'd actually done something good.

1028. I've done something of consequence.

1029. I absolutely thought that this was the end of my documentary,

1030. this was the final moment...
