1. That way he's standing,
Copy !req
2. I mean, it looks like it's higher, right?
Copy !req
3. 'Cause you do that from the second rope.
Copy !req
4. Boom!
Copy !req
5. This job to me is the greatest
life that I could ever live.
Copy !req
6. For years people told me I was too small,
Copy !req
7. that I couldn't do this
and I couldn't do that
Copy !req
8. and I wasn't going to make it.
Copy !req
9. And I've shoved it in everybody's face.
Copy !req
10. No time-outs in this, man.
Copy !req
11. I realize I can't be popular
with everybody all the time.
Copy !req
12. So in the meantime, I'm
going to be popular with me,
Copy !req
13. and I'm going to be the best.
Copy !req
14. - There are definitely two
lives of Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
15. You know, there's who he was before...
Copy !req
16. - You will not ever in your lives
Copy !req
17. see a man more charismatic,
Copy !req
18. more flamboyant, or more talented
Copy !req
19. than the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
20. - The greatest in-ring performer of all time.
Copy !req
21. Being a prick comes natural to Shawn.
Copy !req
22. It did. He was a dick.
Copy !req
23. - The showstopper, the
headliner, the main event.
Copy !req
24. - There was so much bad blood between us,
Copy !req
25. and I was always like,
"If I see him, I'll kill him."
Copy !req
26. I had so much anger about it.
Copy !req
27. - Nobody steals my spotlight. I want it all.
Copy !req
28. - Shawn Michaels could
do absolutely anything,
Copy !req
29. any style to perfection with anyone.
Copy !req
30. When the bell rings, no
one is as good as Shawn.
Copy !req
31. - I will give you a show
Copy !req
32. like you have never ever seen before.
Copy !req
33. Why? Because I can.
Copy !req
34. - The only man to win every major title.
Copy !req
35. - You can't say anybody
was better, but also tormented.
Copy !req
36. He was, like, on self-destruct mode.
Copy !req
37. - I just knew that he didn't love himself.
Copy !req
38. There was something in him that he despised.
Copy !req
39. - If you're taking pain
pills at 12 in the afternoon,
Copy !req
40. belligerent, falling down, staggering,
Copy !req
41. everything that you
have in your life is this.
Copy !req
42. And it's all going away.
Copy !req
43. - On more than one occasion,
Copy !req
44. I really wanted to beat
the hell out of Shawn,
Copy !req
45. but I knew there was a good man
Copy !req
46. behind all this other crap.
Copy !req
47. - The biggest thing that he ever did
Copy !req
48. is turning his life around
Copy !req
49. to where he is now.
Copy !req
50. - And so, yep, there are two lives there.
Copy !req
51. But there's one Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
52. - The very best sports
entertainer in the world.
Copy !req
53. - I love it. I say this. I say we—again—
Copy !req
54. Vince used to always tell me
"You go all the way out there,
Copy !req
55. I'll reel you back in if I want to,"
Copy !req
56. you know what I mean?
Copy !req
57. - NXT started out as a developmental brand
Copy !req
58. that grooms WWE superstars.
Copy !req
59. - Any kind of count up, DQ,
or whatever ends the match.
Copy !req
60. - There's Shawn's fingerprints
in almost every talent in NXT.
Copy !req
61. Shawn is very hands on.
Copy !req
62. - Then he sits up behind him and then whack!
Copy !req
63. - He sold out arenas all around the world
Copy !req
64. when he was the Heartbreak Kid.
Copy !req
65. He's in a different place in his life now.
Copy !req
66. He's humble, he wants
to be behind the scenes.
Copy !req
67. It isn't about him.
Copy !req
68. He wants to help others achieve their dreams.
Copy !req
69. You've got to say it with passion and anger.
Copy !req
70. - Here we go, guys, three, two, one.
Copy !req
71. - Seeing Shawn today,
Copy !req
72. it's sometimes hard for people to believe
Copy !req
73. that's Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
74. Certain levels of talent
Copy !req
75. command certain levels of respect.
Copy !req
76. - Just attack of Johnny Gargano.
Copy !req
77. - Oh, jeez.
Copy !req
78. - I added the plexiglass.
Copy !req
79. - His knowledge and his
wisdom of the business
Copy !req
80. and all that stuff, it's so valuable.
Copy !req
81. So excellent job. Yeah, go, you got this.
Copy !req
82. - Shawn Michaels' life is a story
Copy !req
83. that a lot of people could relate to.
Copy !req
84. He always wanted more.
Copy !req
85. It was a life of never enough.
Copy !req
86. And then, his life totally changes.
Copy !req
87. A lot of us have that, if we're lucky.
Copy !req
88. I think the Shawn Michaels
story is one that's really cool
Copy !req
89. and one that all of us
can stand to learn from.
Copy !req
90. - I was born into a military family.
Copy !req
91. My father was in the Air Force.
Copy !req
92. It was Michael Shawn Hickenbottom,
Copy !req
93. but everybody in my family called me Shawn.
Copy !req
94. My father was a pilot, so
early on we moved a lot.
Copy !req
95. He was going to Vietnam.
Copy !req
96. We went to England, then Maryland
Copy !req
97. and then we moved to Texas.
Copy !req
98. I was about eight-ish.
Copy !req
99. From that point on, I
was in the state of Texas.
Copy !req
100. You don't have long-lasting
friendships in the Air Force.
Copy !req
101. The hardest part for making friends
Copy !req
102. was having the last name.
Copy !req
103. The roll call, Hickenbottom,
Michael Hickenbottom.
Copy !req
104. You could hear the
snickers all over the room.
Copy !req
105. Hickenbottom. And, of course...
Copy !req
106. It's like, "Son of a biscuit,
Copy !req
107. I wish I had a different last name."
Copy !req
108. - Shawn was well-loved.
Copy !req
109. He was always very quiet
and very shy growing up.
Copy !req
110. He wasn't an extrovert.
Copy !req
111. T a good, friendly, nice little boy.
Copy !req
112. And people liked him.
Copy !req
113. He was involved in sports all of his life.
Copy !req
114. He just enjoyed doing everything.
Copy !req
115. - I was a big fan of playing football,
Copy !req
116. because of the contact.
Copy !req
117. You know, contact and
athletics were appealing to me.
Copy !req
118. And then I'm 12 years old,
Copy !req
119. getting to stay up late on a Saturday night,
Copy !req
120. and this wrestling show starts.
Copy !req
121. Southwest Championship Wrestling.
Copy !req
122. The beginning montage,
Copy !req
123. the guy is slow motion
jumping off the top rope.
Copy !req
124. I was enthralled in it. It was just—
Copy !req
125. I don't know, the neatest thing I ever saw.
Copy !req
126. - The best in professional
wrestling and I'm—
Copy !req
127. - After the show, I walked out
Copy !req
128. and my mom was in the kitchen.
Copy !req
129. I said, "I know what I'm
going to do when I grow up."
Copy !req
130. And she said, "What's that?"
Copy !req
131. I said, "I'm going to be
a professional wrestler."
Copy !req
132. She was like, "Oh, that's nice, honey."
Copy !req
133. - He began to talk about
that's what he wanted to do,
Copy !req
134. and I was sure that ultimately
he would grow out of that,
Copy !req
135. but he never did.
Copy !req
136. - Down at the Freeman Coliseum,
Copy !req
137. Shawn would periodically get to go,
Copy !req
138. and, oh, he saw Tully Blanchard.
Copy !req
139. - Wahoo McDaniel, Eddie
Mansfield, Scott Casey.
Copy !req
140. - Of course, then later,
Ric Flair was a wrestling god,
Copy !req
141. and he would buy wrestling magazines,
Copy !req
142. and he would look at Ric Flair,
Copy !req
143. and then he would stand in the mirror,
Copy !req
144. and try to talk like him and look like him.
Copy !req
145. - Being a wrestling fan,
Copy !req
146. it was really a black
sheep source of mockery.
Copy !req
147. It's not something you say
with a great deal of pride.
Copy !req
148. It was just a relationship
Copy !req
149. between me and wrestling for a while
Copy !req
150. and my dad was an amateur wrestler
Copy !req
151. at the University of Iowa,
so he was a real wrestler.
Copy !req
152. And, of course, he just gave
some gruff like, "That's fake."
Copy !req
153. The kindest thing I could say about it was
Copy !req
154. I considered it to be an athletic soap opera,
Copy !req
155. which has always been my description
Copy !req
156. of professional wrestling.
Copy !req
157. - Then a new kid gets transferred.
Copy !req
158. His name is Kenny Kent.
Copy !req
159. I met Shawn the summer of 1980.
Copy !req
160. We were sophomores in high school. Both 15.
Copy !req
161. He would want to wrestle
and throw around his friends,
Copy !req
162. and they didn't like it.
Copy !req
163. And so I instantly became
his little tag team partner
Copy !req
164. and we would just bash each other
Copy !req
165. and throw each other around,
Copy !req
166. and that's really what
developed our friendship.
Copy !req
167. - They'd practice out
in the pool. Frightening.
Copy !req
168. Shawn would lift him straight him, Kenny,
Copy !req
169. and then they'd fall into the pool.
Copy !req
170. His way of practicing.
Copy !req
171. - Shawn dreamed of wrestling.
Copy !req
172. He would call me and tell me these matches
Copy !req
173. that he would lay out and prepare.
Copy !req
174. He was really obsessed with it.
Copy !req
175. - In that time, you struggled back and forth
Copy !req
176. with people who are telling you it's fake,
Copy !req
177. but I am there watching the guy—whap!
Copy !req
178. I mean, hitting the guy
and sweat's flying off.
Copy !req
179. There's something to it.
Copy !req
180. They've got me hook, line, and sinker.
Copy !req
181. - We were a very small school.
Copy !req
182. We did not have a wrestling team.
Copy !req
183. But our senior year, we had a talent show
Copy !req
184. and it was Shawn's idea
Copy !req
185. that me and him were
gonna do a wrestling match.
Copy !req
186. Everything was going quite well
Copy !req
187. until I threw Shawn off
the stage into the crowd,
Copy !req
188. and beat his head on
the table a couple of times.
Copy !req
189. There was just blood
gushing all over his head.
Copy !req
190. And people are going nuts.
Copy !req
191. - I think we came in second. We didn't win.
Copy !req
192. - We got beat by a group of cheerleaders
Copy !req
193. so, you know, two guys
in little tightie whities
Copy !req
194. versus cheerleaders,
they're gonna win every time.
Copy !req
195. - We graduate,
Copy !req
196. and then it's "What are you gonna do?"
Copy !req
197. Well, have you decided what you want?"
Copy !req
198. "I still want to be a wrestler."
Copy !req
199. I recognized that I said it when I was 12,
Copy !req
200. but it's just been a
big, big part of my life.
Copy !req
201. Okay, that's awesome.
That's not a possibility.
Copy !req
202. - But, you know, at 17,
you look at him and you think
Copy !req
203. you don't know what you're talking about.
Copy !req
204. We said, "You're going to college."
Copy !req
205. - There wasn't a lot of open understanding
Copy !req
206. in what I was doing.
Copy !req
207. - We went off to Southwest
Texas State University.
Copy !req
208. When we lived together at college,
Copy !req
209. there were many nights I would hear him
Copy !req
210. and he's standing there with his shirt off
Copy !req
211. and he'd be talking and
screaming at the mirror,
Copy !req
212. practicing.
Copy !req
213. At the end of his second semester,
Copy !req
214. I think his GPA was 0.4.
Copy !req
215. School just wasn't for him,
Copy !req
216. and he was ready to make his
move into the wrestling world.
Copy !req
217. - Essentially, he said,
Copy !req
218. "I don't want to waste anymore
of my time or your money.
Copy !req
219. I am going to be a professional wrestler."
Copy !req
220. - My dad played golf with this guy,
Copy !req
221. and apparently he's the
guy that's a local promoter
Copy !req
222. here in San Antonio.
Copy !req
223. We go down there, and
Jose Lothario was there.
Copy !req
224. - From San Antonio, Texas,
superstar Jose Lothario.
Copy !req
225. - I understood he was a legitimate name.
Copy !req
226. The gentleman stated
"Well, he has to be trained.
Copy !req
227. "Jose could do the training if you wanted.
Copy !req
228. It's gonna cost $3,000."
Copy !req
229. - I thought about facing him
Copy !req
230. when he was 35 or 40 years old,
Copy !req
231. and having him say
Copy !req
232. "Dad, if you'd have just given me the chance,
Copy !req
233. I could have been a professional wrestler."
Copy !req
234. And I couldn't face that thought.
Copy !req
235. And so I said, "What the hell."
Copy !req
236. - You know, I wake up every day
Copy !req
237. never forgetting what I did for a living.
Copy !req
238. I sort of developed a habit
getting up in the morning,
Copy !req
239. stretching and then the heat pad.
Copy !req
240. Over the years, you just
come up with a system
Copy !req
241. that your body responds well to.
Copy !req
242. I do some form of training
every day, you know,
Copy !req
243. to be comfortable for the rest of the day.
Copy !req
244. I plan on getting, you know,
new knees, knee replacements
Copy !req
245. and shoulder replacements.
Copy !req
246. Those things are gonna
add to my quality of life.
Copy !req
247. It's not like I got into this stuff thinking
Copy !req
248. I want to be independently
wealthy and be 100% healthy.
Copy !req
249. That doesn't happen.
Copy !req
250. So I don't know, I don't mind it.
Copy !req
251. I don't think that's
some big, crazy sacrifice.
Copy !req
252. - I first came across Shawn Michaels in 1983.
Copy !req
253. Shawn was training with a gentleman
Copy !req
254. by the name of Jose Lothario.
Copy !req
255. Jose was a big star in Houston, Texas,
Copy !req
256. Dallas, San Antonio.
Copy !req
257. - He was Hispanic, so
there was a Luchador style.
Copy !req
258. It was the aerial side of things.
Copy !req
259. Thankfully, in all of that process,
Copy !req
260. he saw that, "Oh, my goodness,
he's actually pretty good."
Copy !req
261. It was worth the $3,000, period,
Copy !req
262. for him to get me my first job in Louisiana,
Copy !req
263. and that could not have happened
Copy !req
264. without Jose Lothario.
Copy !req
265. - The pride of Vero
Beach, Florida, Terry Taylor.
Copy !req
266. - The first time I met Shawn Michaels
Copy !req
267. working for Mid-South,
Copy !req
268. there was this young, innocent, cheerful,
Copy !req
269. vibrant sort of
Copy !req
270. lost young man.
Copy !req
271. - I was scared of everything.
Copy !req
272. It was a lot of confusion, a lot of unknown.
Copy !req
273. How in God's name is this supposed to go on?
Copy !req
274. I came walking through the back,
Copy !req
275. and Terry Taylor was
standing there at the curtain.
Copy !req
276. - I said, "How long have
you been in the business?"
Copy !req
277. And he goes, "That was my first match."
Copy !req
278. And I couldn't believe
it, because this isn't easy.
Copy !req
279. - Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
280. A very young man, and very inexperienced,
Copy !req
281. but he has a great deal
of natural athletic ability.
Copy !req
282. - We drove 3,000 miles a week.
Copy !req
283. That means there's a lot of time
Copy !req
284. that you're in the car doing this,
Copy !req
285. and he would ask questions.
Copy !req
286. - A young man who is quite handsome.
Copy !req
287. - I was very well mannered, I was quiet,
Copy !req
288. and I wanted to do nothing but learn.
Copy !req
289. - Some young people
come in, "I know everything."
Copy !req
290. Nothing like that with Shawn.
Copy !req
291. Humble, passionate, driven, hungry.
Copy !req
292. - At about six months, the owner, Bill Watts,
Copy !req
293. came to me and he got
me set up in Kansas City.
Copy !req
294. I was going to have the opportunity to begin
Copy !req
295. to grow as a wrestler, as a performer.
Copy !req
296. - We're hearing all this, like,
Copy !req
297. this guy Shawn Michaels,
Shawn Michaels is coming in.
Copy !req
298. We're like, "Damn, nobody has gotten
Copy !req
299. "any attention like this.
Copy !req
300. What's wrong with us?"
Copy !req
301. We walked in the dressing room
Copy !req
302. and this guy had real short hair,
Copy !req
303. green tights pulled up to under his chest.
Copy !req
304. Let me ask this nerd, like,
Copy !req
305. "Hey, do you know who Shawn Michaels is?"
Copy !req
306. And he leaned back he
goes, "I'm Shawn Michaels."
Copy !req
307. I was like, "Oh, damn,
we got some work to do."
Copy !req
308. They threw us together because
Copy !req
309. they needed a match real quick.
Copy !req
310. We didn't have time to
prepare for it, but it clicked.
Copy !req
311. - Marty Jannetty.
Copy !req
312. - Marty just carried
himself with such confidence.
Copy !req
313. He was enjoying himself. He was outgoing.
Copy !req
314. I was so sort of shy, conservative.
Copy !req
315. - Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
316. - Shawn came from a military family.
Copy !req
317. Shawn was protected from a lot of the evils
Copy !req
318. that lurk in the real world
Copy !req
319. and having some
notoriety, being on television,
Copy !req
320. you've got women, you've
got alcohol, you've got drugs.
Copy !req
321. And it's all readily available to you.
Copy !req
322. - Yeah, he liked it right away.
Copy !req
323. At first, he wasn't old enough,
Copy !req
324. so he had to wait in the parking lot.
Copy !req
325. We'd bring girls down to
him and beer down to him.
Copy !req
326. - Marty Jannetty one day said,
Copy !req
327. "I see something in you
that's just dying to get out."
Copy !req
328. He said, "You just need somebody
Copy !req
329. "to bring it out of you,
Copy !req
330. and I'm gonna bring it out."
Copy !req
331. - From the Showboat Hotel and Casino
Copy !req
332. in Las Vegas, Nevada,
Copy !req
333. this is AWA Championship Wrestling on ESPN.
Copy !req
334. - So, I was 20 years old.
Copy !req
335. TV tapings are in Las Vegas.
Copy !req
336. At that time, Marty and I, you know,
Copy !req
337. I knew he was out there,
Copy !req
338. so we just started looking around.
Copy !req
339. All of a sudden there he
is, he's down there playing.
Copy !req
340. And go down there,
Copy !req
341. and I went and just do-do-do, pulled it down.
Copy !req
342. - I'm sitting there with him,
Copy !req
343. and all of the sudden we hear this,
Copy !req
344. "Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding."
Copy !req
345. Red lights go flashing
around, and Shawn hit triple 7s.
Copy !req
346. Won 750 bucks the first time.
Copy !req
347. The irony of it now,
like, oh, this place was—
Copy !req
348. Vegas and the nightlife of Vegas
Copy !req
349. and everything else would be my down—
Copy !req
350. Would be my downfall.
Copy !req
351. It started later that night.
Copy !req
352. It's the first line of yayo, you know.
Copy !req
353. The first line of blow.
Copy !req
354. And it's, "Oh, my gosh, this
is the greatest thing ever."
Copy !req
355. And it's just this whole world opens up.
Copy !req
356. I'd have never been able
to get that guy out of me,
Copy !req
357. and Marty is the guy
that helped tap into that.
Copy !req
358. I don't even know how much I knew was there.
Copy !req
359. - Me and Shawn partied
Monday night, Tuesday night,
Copy !req
360. Wednesday night, Thursday night.
Copy !req
361. Come Friday, we were burned out.
Copy !req
362. Big Van Vader, he comes to hang out with us.
Copy !req
363. He looked at Curt Hennig and he goes,
Copy !req
364. "I thought you said these guys partied."
Copy !req
365. And Curt said, "They
don't start until midnight."
Copy !req
366. - The Midnight Rockers.
Copy !req
367. What a sensational pair they are.
Copy !req
368. - It was like magic. The
Judas Priest song come on.
Copy !req
369. - They love to party.
Copy !req
370. - They've taken the AWA by storm.
Copy !req
371. - The move happening faster
Copy !req
372. than we can even talk about it.
Copy !req
373. - They've got to put a
bigger roof on the arenas
Copy !req
374. to hold these two kids in it.

748. but his ego and the chip on his shoulder
Copy !req
749. made him nine-foot-five.
Copy !req
750. - Shawn Michaels,
Copy !req
751. he's our Intercontinental Champion!
Copy !req
752. - '92-'93,
Copy !req
753. Intercontinental Champion at the time,
Copy !req
754. looking for Shawn to really step up
Copy !req
755. and become a huge star for us.
Copy !req
756. - One thing I did have
Copy !req
757. is I wasn't scared of anything.
Copy !req
758. I was the most dangerous person in the world
Copy !req
759. 'cause I had nothing to lose.
Copy !req
760. And when you are like that
in a creative line of work,
Copy !req
761. you are frickin' unbeatable.
Copy !req
762. - Welcome to WrestleMania 10!
Copy !req
763. - In the process of studying
Shawn Michael's matches,
Copy !req
764. the one that many people go back to
Copy !req
765. is the infamous ladder match.
Copy !req
766. The match that Shawn Michaels
and Razor Ramone made famous
Copy !req
767. at WrestleMania 10.
Copy !req
768. - We are making history here.
Copy !req
769. - So right before
WrestleMania 10, leading up,
Copy !req
770. there was a suspension with Shawn,
Copy !req
771. where Shawn had been out
of the company for a while.
Copy !req
772. Shawn left as the Intercontinental Champion.
Copy !req
773. - Yeah, he failed a drug test for 'roids.
Copy !req
774. At that time, brother,
Copy !req
775. pills were bein' passed around in bars.
Copy !req
776. Like, guys go, "Here, man.
Copy !req
777. Canadian Valium, here take this."
Copy !req
778. - Shawn did not feel
Copy !req
779. that he should have been
suspended, was pissed off.
Copy !req
780. Vince didn't wanna put up with him,
Copy !req
781. thought he was an out of control egomaniac.
Copy !req
782. - And they'd tell Shawn to send the belt back
Copy !req
783. and he says, "No, I'm not sending it back."
Copy !req
784. - Shawn decides he wants to come back.
Copy !req
785. Well, Razor's the Intercontinental Champion.
Copy !req
786. - So take both championship belts,
Copy !req
787. hang 'em above the ring,
Copy !req
788. you fight to climb the ladder,
Copy !req
789. whoever gets the
championships above the ring,
Copy !req
790. that's your true champion.
Copy !req
791. - The two Intercontinental Championship
Copy !req
792. belts hanging from above.
Copy !req
793. - For the following contest,
Copy !req
794. there are no rules!
Copy !req
795. - With the ladder up. Oh!
Copy !req
796. - From high above!
Copy !req
797. Oh! - Oh!
Copy !req
798. It's the most barbaric, insane,
Copy !req
799. car crash excitement you've ever seen.
Copy !req
800. - It's starting to shake! Oh, no!
Copy !req
801. - Oh!
Copy !req
802. - I was able to have a presence
Copy !req
803. that I don't think they knew that I had.
Copy !req
804. It isn't about size, it is about presence.
Copy !req
805. - Oh! Oh!
Copy !req
806. - Shawn actually lost the match,
Copy !req
807. but it put Shawn at a different level
Copy !req
808. that people believed
Copy !req
809. this little bastard could do anything.
Copy !req
810. If you didn't before, or
you didn't want to believe,
Copy !req
811. Shawn made you believe.
Copy !req
812. - Should close it and
just drop it to the side.
Copy !req
813. Boom and then you say,
"Okay, mister, here we go."
Copy !req
814. You know, whatever.
Copy !req
815. I don't know, just throwing it out there.
Copy !req
816. This weekend, we have
one of our bigger events.
Copy !req
817. Five-man ladder match.
Copy !req
818. Is that gonna...
Copy !req
819. Someone will be holding that right there.
Copy !req
820. Many, many years ago, it was just two of us
Copy !req
821. and one ladder.
Copy !req
822. And now, these young men and women
Copy !req
823. have taken it to a whole nother level.
Copy !req
824. Got a lot of moving parts around here.
Copy !req
825. - I always dreamed of being in a ladder match
Copy !req
826. obviously because of Shawn and Razor.
Copy !req
827. Ladder matches are
about crazy stunts, big falls,
Copy !req
828. it's a car crash come to life.
Copy !req
829. He is the face of the ladder match
Copy !req
830. and to have him kind of help us out,
Copy !req
831. have him kinda watch over
us, you can't dream it up.
Copy !req
832. It's perfect.
Copy !req
833. There you go.
Copy !req
834. - I met him in the locker room, 1993,
Copy !req
835. and wanted to know
Copy !req
836. if I'd be interested in
becoming his bodyguard.
Copy !req
837. And the first thing out of Shawn's mouth is,
Copy !req
838. "Just so you know, everybody hates us."
Copy !req
839. The bodyguard position was 24/7.
Copy !req
840. It wasn't just on television persona,
Copy !req
841. a lot of people didn't like him.
Copy !req
842. - Shawn Michaels was misunderstood
Copy !req
843. all throughout his career.
Copy !req
844. There was a certain perception
Copy !req
845. that he was an ass, frankly.
Copy !req
846. Shawn was selfish.
Copy !req
847. Shawn did have an out of control ego,
Copy !req
848. and Shawn did feel that he
Copy !req
849. was better than everybody else.
Copy !req
850. To be successful and
to take it to the next level,
Copy !req
851. you have to start looking out for yourself.
Copy !req
852. It's not a team sport.
Copy !req
853. - The one thing that was
the saving grace for Shawn
Copy !req
854. was he was so good in the ring.
Copy !req
855. As a performer, if you work with a guy
Copy !req
856. that makes you look that good,
Copy !req
857. I don't care what you think of him,
Copy !req
858. you want to work with him.
Copy !req
859. - Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall,
Copy !req
860. 1-2-3 Kid, and then Paul LeVesque, Triple H.
Copy !req
861. These were guys that
loved hanging out together
Copy !req
862. and hence the Kliq began to form.
Copy !req
863. - We all just hit it off, and
then it was—you know, we—
Copy !req
864. All we did was talk non-stop
about the business and,
Copy !req
865. you know, we were all
just so passionate about it.
Copy !req
866. - The perception was that the Kliq
Copy !req
867. was all-knowing and all-powerful,
Copy !req
868. and that if you crossed the Kliq,
Copy !req
869. they'll just go Vince
and you'll be blackballed.
Copy !req
870. - They couldn't call any of the shots,
Copy !req
871. but I listened, and they
had some really good ideas.
Copy !req
872. Really smart, individually.
Copy !req
873. And Shawn's very smart when he's sober.
Copy !req
874. Shawn had an attitude,
Copy !req
875. when he drank even more so on top of pills
Copy !req
876. and Shawn would say,
Copy !req
877. you know, the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Copy !req
878. And he was protected in a WB environment.
Copy !req
879. You know, but outside that environment—
Copy !req
880. - Shawn Michaels, British Bulldog,
Copy !req
881. 1-2-3 Kid walk into a bar.
Copy !req
882. Me, Scott, and Kev were in Europe.
Copy !req
883. It was where we find
out that this all happened.
Copy !req
884. Bunch of Marines in a tough bar.
Copy !req
885. Every eye in that place
turns to the three wrestlers
Copy !req
886. that just walked in the door,
Copy !req
887. of which Shawn is the megastar.
Copy !req
888. Every girl in that place
starts to look at Shawn,
Copy !req
889. Shawn is very enamored with that,
Copy !req
890. and Shawn is at this point in his life,
Copy !req
891. like, you lookin' at?
Is there a problem, jarhead?"
Copy !req
892. They go to walk out, six Marines walk out,
Copy !req
893. beat the out of Shawn
Copy !req
894. and leave him in the side of the car.
Copy !req
895. - And the last thing I can remember is,
Copy !req
896. you know, there being the coat check.
Copy !req
897. The next thing is waking up in the hospital.
Copy !req
898. And everything else is a complete blank.
Copy !req
899. That was four days
Copy !req
900. out of a seven day
week, situations like that.
Copy !req
901. Getting beat up by nine guys in Syracuse,
Copy !req
902. to me, there's not a whole lot of shame in.
Copy !req
903. You know, that kind of stuff
just sort of happens to me.
Copy !req
904. I've got two choices—
Copy !req
905. sit home and cry, or to
come out and be a pain.
Copy !req
906. And I got news for you,
folks, I'm all cried out.
Copy !req
907. - This moment of existence
Copy !req
908. was the 20 minutes in the ring every night.
Copy !req
909. He wouldn't be messed up.
Copy !req
910. He'd go in there and
he'd kill it every night,
Copy !req
911. and then the second he was done—
Copy !req
912. "I'm in pain, and I took some stuff,
Copy !req
913. "so I wouldn't be in pain this morning,
Copy !req
914. but I'm messed up."
Copy !req
915. Why would you hang out with this misery 24/7?
Copy !req
916. No, it's not. It's again like your brother.
Copy !req
917. It's like a family member.
Copy !req
918. Shawn owes his life to Triple H,
Copy !req
919. Paul Leveque, owes his life to him.
Copy !req
920. - Shawn Michaels knows
Copy !req
921. that the greatest match of his life
Copy !req
922. must come this Sunday night.
Copy !req
923. By the time you get to the mid-90s,
Copy !req
924. Bret Hart has become a crowd favorite.
Copy !req
925. Bret is a very soft-spoken,
quiet, Canadian gentleman.
Copy !req
926. Shawn is an outspoken, loud, brash American.
Copy !req
927. Only one person can be
the absolute alpha dog.
Copy !req
928. The Iron Man match, the
boyhood dream realized,
Copy !req
929. it added another layer to the
Shawn Michaels character.
Copy !req
930. - The Iron Man match,
Copy !req
931. it's the opportunity where I get to,
Copy !req
932. you know, get my first world championship.
Copy !req
933. - There's only one Heartbreak Kid!
Copy !req
934. Unbelievable, what a ride!
Copy !req
935. - An hour-long match,
Copy !req
936. it's gonna be a long night at
the office, in wrestling terms.
Copy !req
937. - For the WWE Championship!
Copy !req
938. - We start to have our issues.
Copy !req
939. You know, I was never big on the Kliq idea.
Copy !req
940. It was a testy match in a lot of ways.
Copy !req
941. - Hart's in big trouble.
Copy !req
942. - There was a famous part
Copy !req
943. where I jump off the second rope.
Copy !req
944. He comes up and kicks me in the face
Copy !req
945. as hard as he could.
Copy !req
946. I mean, he almost knocked me out.
Copy !req
947. - Oh, my goodness!
Copy !req
948. We stiff each other a
lot of times in that match.
Copy !req
949. - One, two, out!
Copy !req
950. - The boyhood dream has come true!
Copy !req
951. - The boyhood dream has come true,
Copy !req
952. because that was Shawn's
boyhood dream, it was.
Copy !req
953. And that's exactly what happened.
Copy !req
954. - It was a very big moment for my career.
Copy !req
955. It's like, oh, it's the first
World Championship
Copy !req
956. and you go like, "Hmm, I
pictured it being different."
Copy !req
957. I wasn't at a good place
and all that kinda stuff.
Copy !req
958. Just a lot of responsibility
that goes with that.
Copy !req
959. Now every guy in that
locker room, their well-being,
Copy !req
960. their life, you know,
their livelihood and all that
Copy !req
961. depends on the job that you do.
Copy !req
962. You know, it all falls on your shoulders.
Copy !req
963. The whole thing was uncomfortable.
Copy !req
964. - As we got into 1996, Ted
Turner, who owned WCW,
Copy !req
965. our competitors, was being very aggressive
Copy !req
966. in his quest for new talent.
Copy !req
967. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash,
Copy !req
968. they were going to leave
and go to Ted Turner's WCW.
Copy !req
969. The last matches being
Copy !req
970. in New York in Madison Square Garden.
Copy !req
971. - On my 19th, 1996,
Copy !req
972. one of the greatest days of wrestling,
Copy !req
973. and my life as well.
Copy !req
974. Me and my friend went to a house show
Copy !req
975. which was not televised,
Copy !req
976. we would sneak in a camera past security
Copy !req
977. and we would film the shows.
Copy !req
978. Shawn was my hero and was my idol growing up.
Copy !req
979. The ending shows Shawn Michaels
Copy !req
980. giving Diesel a super kick.
Copy !req
981. Match is over.
Copy !req
982. And then all of a sudden
Razor Ramon comes out.
Copy !req
983. I'm like, "Oh, cool."
Copy !req
984. They start hugging and
I'm screaming like a little girl.
Copy !req
985. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
986. Who's this?
Copy !req
987. And it turns out to be Hunter Hurst Helmsley.
Copy !req
988. They all start hugging and, you
know, obviously saying goodbye.
Copy !req
989. It was insane. That night was magical.
Copy !req
990. Yeah!
Copy !req
991. The business was well protected
Copy !req
992. up until then, and our
cameras still kept going.
Copy !req
993. The only camera that was there.
Copy !req
994. If we were not involved
in taping the curtain call,
Copy !req
995. it would not be talked about as much today.
Copy !req
996. - Place is going insane.
Copy !req
997. Everybody knows everything
on the inside of the business.
Copy !req
998. There's no secrets.
Copy !req
999. - People in the business didn't like it.
Copy !req
1000. They thought it was the
worst thing that happened.
Copy !req
1001. Here's this bad guy, who we have no idea
Copy !req
1002. is friends with all these other guys.
Copy !req
1003. - It's breaking the fourth wall
Copy !req
1004. and just telling people,
Copy !req
1005. "Everything we just did is bull."
Copy !req
1006. Shawn Michaels is now
hugging and kissing the guy
Copy !req
1007. that he's just spent 20
minutes beating the hell out of.
Copy !req
1008. We entertained you, but now it's all over,
Copy !req
1009. we're really good buddies.
Taboo in the wrestling business.
Copy !req
1010. - The tape was leaked out to a writer.
Copy !req
1011. The tape blows up on its own.
Copy !req
1012. - I had no idea that was gonna happen.
Copy !req
1013. It was something that's
never been done before.
Copy !req
1014. I'm watching this and going,
"What the hell is going on?"
Copy !req
1015. The Kliq was an insult to our business.
Copy !req
1016. If they had done that
in the '70s, early '80s,
Copy !req
1017. they'd all four of them get
the beat out of 'em.
Copy !req
1018. They wrestle each other and
they all kiss and say goodbye.
Copy !req
1019. - Somebody's gotta go down for it.
Copy !req
1020. Kev's gone, Scott's gone, Shawn's the champ.
Copy !req
1021. Stuff rolls downhill and,
yeah, it all rolled on me.
Copy !req
1022. - Triple H is the one
Copy !req
1023. that probably paid the heaviest price
Copy !req
1024. as far as his career
Copy !req
1025. kind of hitting a roadblock at that point.
Copy !req
1026. Shawn didn't really pay a price.
Copy !req
1027. - I was inherently selfish regardless,
Copy !req
1028. so I'm sure I didn't feel
the compassion for him,
Copy !req
1029. as maybe I should have.
Copy !req
1030. - There was a bit of a shutdown on Shawn.
Copy !req
1031. Business is—it's okay, but it's not great.
Copy !req
1032. You know, there's a lot of banter
Copy !req
1033. about Shawn's not working as champion.
Copy !req
1034. He's not drawing.
Copy !req
1035. He's collapsing under the pressure.
Copy !req
1036. I can see him falling apart.
Copy !req
1037. Kevin and Scott are gone,
and I'm all he's got now.
Copy !req
1038. He's a mess.
Copy !req
1039. - I felt a lot of pressure
and I didn't handle it well.
Copy !req
1040. For me, it was all about
Copy !req
1041. running and escaping, and honestly,
Copy !req
1042. you know, there was running
Copy !req
1043. and escaping from the dude I'd become.
Copy !req
1044. Better than having to face that,
Copy !req
1045. I might just take a few of
these and knock myself out.
Copy !req
1046. Won't have to pay
attention to it till tomorrow.
Copy !req
1047. - He'd be pilled up, passed out,
Copy !req
1048. put Shawn on a luggage cart
and roll him up to his room,
Copy !req
1049. and get him undressed,
take the dip out of his mouth,
Copy !req
1050. and put him on his side,
put a pillow behind him
Copy !req
1051. so he wouldn't roll over and
choke to death in his sleep.
Copy !req
1052. And set an alarm and get
up every two, three hours
Copy !req
1053. to go check on him.
Copy !req
1054. And that was every night.
Copy !req
1055. Well, you know, every night? Sad existence.
Copy !req
1056. - What everybody has to understand
Copy !req
1057. about Shawn Michaels is this—
Copy !req
1058. If I wanna come out here
Copy !req
1059. and look like a blithering idiot on live TV,
Copy !req
1060. believe me, I'm gonna do it.
Copy !req
1061. Why? Because I can.
Copy !req
1062. - He had a drug problem for a while,
Copy !req
1063. a serious one,
Copy !req
1064. and he kind of fell in the hole even deeper.
Copy !req
1065. But it wasn't until he became champion
Copy !req
1066. that I felt that Shawn, uh,
Copy !req
1067. started to question himself.
Copy !req
1068. - I called his dad, the colonel,
Copy !req
1069. and said, "I'd like to visit."
Copy !req
1070. So I flew down to meet him
Copy !req
1071. and I'm saying, "You're
probably not aware of this,
Copy !req
1072. Shawn really has a drug problem."
Copy !req
1073. The colonel got angry.
Copy !req
1074. He just didn't want to hear it.
Copy !req
1075. - I don't know that anybody
knew how to address it.
Copy !req
1076. Even things like rehab, my parents,
Copy !req
1077. you know, God love 'em,
Copy !req
1078. I don't that they knew
what it was that you did,
Copy !req
1079. except just to be worried.
Copy !req
1080. Not long after that I tweaked my knee.
Copy !req
1081. I went to this dude in San Antonio
Copy !req
1082. who doesn't know anything about wrestling,
Copy !req
1083. and obviously sees I've torn my ACL
Copy !req
1084. and he's like, "Dude, you're done."
Copy !req
1085. You know, he said, "You're
not wrestling with a torn ACL."
Copy !req
1086. I know that over the last several months,
Copy !req
1087. I've lost a lot of things,
Copy !req
1088. and one of them has been my smile.
Copy !req
1089. - He went in the ring to
announce he was retiring
Copy !req
1090. 'cause he had a bad knee.
Copy !req
1091. I didn't believe his knee was the issue.
Copy !req
1092. I always thought the issue was
Copy !req
1093. he didn't want to wrestle
me at WrestleMania 13
Copy !req
1094. and drop the belt to me.
Copy !req
1095. I doubted Shawn's integrity
as far as his injury went.
Copy !req
1096. You phony little faker,
Copy !req
1097. why don't you take your
little pussyfoot injury—
Copy !req
1098. - All right, all right, knock it off.
Copy !req
1099. No, no, no. - It's all right.
Copy !req
1100. I'm not going anywhere.
Copy !req
1101. - And go back and find your smile.
Copy !req
1102. - I got accused of faking it.
Copy !req
1103. Bret told everybody I was faking it.
Copy !req
1104. My excuse is drug addicts lie all the time.
Copy !req
1105. Well, there's no doubt
Copy !req
1106. that you found your
smile again as you stated...
Copy !req
1107. - A year off of the wrestling business
Copy !req
1108. was a year of no pay.
Copy !req
1109. That's just not— That isn't feasible.
Copy !req
1110. And they said, "Well, look,
you can put a brace on it
Copy !req
1111. and wrap it up."
Copy !req
1112. They went and they got me
a brace and everything else.
Copy !req
1113. I was like, "Okay, I can do this."
Copy !req
1114. And it is time for the Heartbreak Kid,
Copy !req
1115. Shawn Michaels to return to action!
Copy !req
1116. - This was a moment where
things needed to change.
Copy !req

1478. was when she was eight months pregnant
Copy !req
1479. and she's doing everything she can,
Copy !req
1480. at eight months pregnant with her belly,
Copy !req
1481. trying to hold me up.
Copy !req
1482. - I took pity on him,
Copy !req
1483. and I just prayed for him, is all I could do.
Copy !req
1484. But it didn't make me think, you know,
Copy !req
1485. "What in the world have I gotten into?"
Copy !req
1486. If I was fearful, I was
fearful for our unborn child.
Copy !req
1487. And I hoped that it would end
whenever the baby was born,
Copy !req
1488. and it didn't.
Copy !req
1489. - Here in Cleveland,
Ohio, we will make history.
Copy !req
1490. - I don't remember why Shawn was there.
Copy !req
1491. He must have been some
doing something in the show.
Copy !req
1492. We all go, me, Taker,
Rock, Vince is in the ring.
Copy !req
1493. "Now I own WCW."
Copy !req
1494. Shawn is messed up, pilled up.
Copy !req
1495. So this is a celebratory moment.
Copy !req
1496. He's belligerent, loud,
falling down, staggering,
Copy !req
1497. Vince calls him in, tells him,
"Go home, I'm done with you."
Copy !req
1498. Shawn goes ballistic.
Copy !req
1499. Walks by me in the hallway, just goes off.
Copy !req
1500. - You know, I went
Copy !req
1501. and browbeat Hunter unfairly, obviously.
Copy !req
1502. - And I just went off back,
Copy !req
1503. you know, in his face,
screaming match back and forth,
Copy !req
1504. and he storms out.
Copy !req
1505. - Now that's another one that makes me cry.
Copy !req
1506. I went and said some mean stuff to him
Copy !req
1507. and walked out.
Copy !req
1508. And, you know,
Copy !req
1509. that sucks as well.
Copy !req
1510. - And I don't talk to him for a long time.
Copy !req
1511. - We didn't speak, I don't know,
Copy !req
1512. I mean I would think at
least a year, two years.
Copy !req
1513. It was, what do they
call it, the rock bottom.
Copy !req
1514. - Our son was at the age to where he was,
Copy !req
1515. you know, walking around,
more aware of things,
Copy !req
1516. and it was the night
Copy !req
1517. when Shawn had fallen asleep on the couch—
Copy !req
1518. a drug-induced sleep—
Copy !req
1519. with our son climbing all over him
Copy !req
1520. and saying, "Daddy's asleep."
Copy !req
1521. - To me, the biggest thing again
Copy !req
1522. was Cameron saying, "Daddy's tired."
Copy !req
1523. And it sort of dawning on me
Copy !req
1524. that he was now being able to recognize
Copy !req
1525. clearly my state of mind.
Copy !req
1526. I went into the bathroom and closed the door.
Copy !req
1527. Looking at yourself in the mirror
Copy !req
1528. and, you know,
Copy !req
1529. I sat there and cried like a baby and wept,
Copy !req
1530. you know, realizing that you are failing,
Copy !req
1531. you know, a two-year-old little boy.
Copy !req
1532. And all of those things
Copy !req
1533. sort of came crashing down that night,
Copy !req
1534. and I just—it's the first time I ever feel
Copy !req
1535. like such a frickin' failure.
Copy !req
1536. And I think that that
was the last straw for him,
Copy !req
1537. and when he woke up the next morning,
Copy !req
1538. he told me he was never
taking pills or drinking again,
Copy !req
1539. and from that point, he didn't.
Copy !req
1540. It was an instantaneous letting go
Copy !req
1541. of the drugs and alcohol.
Copy !req
1542. - I just called him up out of the clear blue,
Copy !req
1543. I just asked him when the
last time he talked to Paul,
Copy !req
1544. and, um, he just avoided that situation.
Copy !req
1545. I just said, "Man, you're
wrong, you got to call him."
Copy !req
1546. I called Hunter and let him know,
Copy !req
1547. you know, how sorry I was
and how out of line I was.
Copy !req
1548. And I said, "I hope you can forgive me."
Copy !req
1549. I needed that from Hunter.
Copy !req
1550. For me, it was easy, like, I didn't—
Copy !req
1551. as long as it wasn't drugs talking to me.
Copy !req
1552. - It's good to see you.
Copy !req
1553. - Group hug.
Copy !req
1554. - Of course, I do regret the pain
Copy !req
1555. that it caused people in my life,
Copy !req
1556. but there is a part of
that that I don't think
Copy !req
1557. that Michael Shawn Hickenbottom can get
Copy !req
1558. to where he got creatively
Copy !req
1559. without a little bit of that
reckless, risky mindset.
Copy !req
1560. I wouldn't have had the guts to do it.
Copy !req
1561. - It was our first Christmas together,
Copy !req
1562. and I gave Shawn a Bible
and some other books,
Copy !req
1563. and he began reading them.
Copy !req
1564. - I had never had anything that I could grasp
Copy !req
1565. that was bigger than the wrestling business.
Copy !req
1566. That's just not enough to
base, I don't know, a life on.
Copy !req
1567. - I worked at Cornerstone
Church in San Antonio, Texas.
Copy !req
1568. All of a sudden I heard a deep voice said,
Copy !req
1569. "I want to come to a Bible study."
Copy !req
1570. And then I got up from my desk
Copy !req
1571. and stuck my head out the door,
Copy !req
1572. and I said, "Well, you can come to mine."
Copy !req
1573. When he left, everybody came out and said,
Copy !req
1574. "Do you know who that was?"
Copy !req
1575. I said, "No, I don't know
who that was, who was it?"
Copy !req
1576. And they said, "Shawn Michaels,"
Copy !req
1577. and I said, "Well, who's Shawn Michaels?"
Copy !req
1578. He said, "Well, first, Keith,
Copy !req
1579. I want you to pray for my back."
Copy !req
1580. He says, "I've been out of wrestling
Copy !req
1581. and I want to go back."
Copy !req
1582. I said, "Well, there's a simple prayer
Copy !req
1583. that we can pray together."
Copy !req
1584. And while he was saying that prayer,
Copy !req
1585. tears just come out of his eyes.
Copy !req
1586. - I got nobody to blame but me,
Copy !req
1587. and I don't have anything in
common with the other dude,
Copy !req
1588. and I don't know how I got that way.
Copy !req
1589. It wasn't from family. It
wasn't from upbringing.
Copy !req
1590. - He was so desperate
Copy !req
1591. to get back in that close
relationship with Rebecca
Copy !req
1592. and his son.
Copy !req
1593. - I was now a dad, I was a husband,
Copy !req
1594. and I was really devoted
and thrilled about that.
Copy !req
1595. - You're like a child,
Copy !req
1596. you just want to tell
everybody, "I've been saved."
Copy !req
1597. - Once Shawn got his life together
Copy !req
1598. and found Christ, it was night and day.
Copy !req
1599. When he looks back at his life,
Copy !req
1600. that's the biggest thing that he ever did.
Copy !req
1601. - You were dealing with the grownup
Copy !req
1602. when Shawn came back,
Copy !req
1603. someone who was there to do business.
Copy !req
1604. Shawn was a lot calmer
and much easier to deal with.
Copy !req
1605. - Shawn Michaels of old
Copy !req
1606. is very different from Shawn Hickenbottom,
Copy !req
1607. the man I married.
Copy !req
1608. The sexy boy and all that kinda stuff,
Copy !req
1609. and his cocky attitude
Copy !req
1610. and the cocky little smile that he does.
Copy !req
1611. That's so far from who he really is.
Copy !req
1612. - I remember somebody asking me,
Copy !req
1613. they said, you know, "Hey, I
heard Shawn found religion."
Copy !req
1614. Yeah. They laughed,
Copy !req
1615. and I said, "I don't anybody
that died OD'ing on religion."
Copy !req
1616. - He had called Triple H.
Copy !req
1617. He thanked Hunter for the time on the road
Copy !req
1618. because before his marriage to me,
Copy !req
1619. the one who took care of him was Hunter.
Copy !req
1620. That night, after Shawn had gone to bed,
Copy !req
1621. he woke up in the morning and
the pain was gone in his back.
Copy !req
1622. It was definitely a miracle.
Copy !req
1623. So, he was physically
ready to go back in the ring,
Copy !req
1624. and I knew that the Lord
would take care of him.
Copy !req
1625. - We were kind of having conversations
Copy !req
1626. at the time, and then he said,
Copy !req
1627. "I want my son to see me do this one time,"
Copy !req
1628. he said, "But I don't know that I can do it,
Copy !req
1629. I don't know physically if I can or not,"
Copy !req
1630. and he said, "If I'm going to,
Copy !req
1631. I only trust one person, that's you.
Copy !req
1632. If you consider it, I would love to do it.
Copy !req
1633. What do you think?"
Copy !req
1634. - Moments away from the non-sanctioned fight
Copy !req
1635. between two men who
were, at one time, best friends,
Copy !req
1636. Shawn Michaels and Triple H.
Copy !req
1637. Shawn Michaels last wrestled 1,609 days ago,
Copy !req
1638. if you can believe that.
Copy !req
1639. - His whole family was there.
Copy !req
1640. You know, they were all scared to death.
Copy !req
1641. Got in the ring, did a couple of things.
Copy !req
1642. Never missed a beat, not
a moment, not an anything.
Copy !req
1643. - I was on my chair like a redneck,
Copy !req
1644. just screaming and yelling for him.
Copy !req
1645. Of course, I cried at the end.
Copy !req
1646. - Like, how is this possible,
Copy !req
1647. that he is this good
still, after all that time
Copy !req
1648. and injury and everything else? Unbelievable.
Copy !req
1649. - It was just as easy as the day is long,
Copy !req
1650. it was poetic, it was phenomenal,
Copy !req
1651. it was everything that is
right and good about the world
Copy !req
1652. in this line of work, and,
you know, my family there,
Copy !req
1653. out there with my best friend.
Copy !req
1654. - The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels!
Copy !req
1655. - After the Summerslam,
Copy !req
1656. that's when there was
a sense of peace and joy
Copy !req
1657. in the midst of doing
your job and your family,
Copy !req
1658. combining these two worlds
that I've never had together,
Copy !req
1659. and I'm not even the same person.
Copy !req
1660. And now, and it all feels so right.
Copy !req
1661. That's as good as it gets, you know,
Copy !req
1662. it's heaven on Earth here in this room.
Copy !req
1663. - Shawn Michaels changed completely
Copy !req
1664. as a human being.
Copy !req
1665. And somehow, as a character,
Copy !req
1666. he managed to keep a lot of
the aura that he always had.
Copy !req
1667. I could argue that Shawn was
at his best after he came back.
Copy !req
1668. - To me,
Copy !req
1669. the greatest in-ring performer
Copy !req
1670. of all time.
Copy !req
1671. - It gets more difficult
Copy !req
1672. to find a new mountain, a new challenge.
Copy !req
1673. Sometimes that mountain or that new challenge
Copy !req
1674. just isn't there.
Copy !req
1675. And so later on in my career, I learned that
Copy !req
1676. when I disconnect from it,
something will usually happen,
Copy !req
1677. and, you know, the one with Flair
Copy !req
1678. is the one I honestly always speak of.
Copy !req
1679. Remember the story of Old Yeller?
Copy !req
1680. The Showstopper's gonna take you, Old Yeller,
Copy !req
1681. behind the woodshed and
put you out of your misery.
Copy !req
1682. I lost myself in that drama.
Copy !req
1683. I get a call from my buddy, Kenny,
Copy !req
1684. who's now been made aware of the match.
Copy !req
1685. It's like, oh my goodness,
he said, "Can you believe it?"
Copy !req
1686. - It was overwhelming to think
that the guy that we idolized
Copy !req
1687. that we would watch a little
TV box in San Antonio, Texas,
Copy !req
1688. somehow their lives
were going to interconnect.
Copy !req
1689. Ric was his guy. He
absolutely loved Ric Flair.
Copy !req
1690. - Kenny took me back to that time.
Copy !req
1691. - This was why I went
from New York to Orlando,
Copy !req
1692. was to see this moment.
Copy !req
1693. - Now in this match,
Copy !req
1694. should Ric Flair lose, he must retire.
Copy !req
1695. - I remember feeling
Copy !req
1696. like the way Ric Flair started this match,
Copy !req
1697. that he had a chance.
Copy !req
1698. - There's no other way
to put it—he carried me.
Copy !req
1699. He gave everything that
anybody could ever give
Copy !req
1700. to a match that night.
Copy !req
1701. - Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute, look out.
Copy !req
1702. Good grief!
Copy !req
1703. Oh, not again!
Copy !req
1704. - It becomes clear
Copy !req
1705. that Ric Flair just doesn't have enough.
Copy !req
1706. I love this part, I could
tear up talking about it.
Copy !req
1707. Flair, like an old dog, still fighting,
Copy !req
1708. he thinks he still has it.
Copy !req
1709. And that's when Shawn sort
of has to have that moment
Copy !req
1710. where he says, "I'm sorry, I love you."
Copy !req
1711. - Flair wants to fight.
Copy !req
1712. - And just turns the lights out.
Copy !req
1713. It was as beautiful and perfect
an ending to a wrestling match
Copy !req
1714. as you will ever have.
Copy !req
1715. - He knew I didn't want to go,
Copy !req
1716. and he said, "I love you."
Copy !req
1717. It's a great moment in wrestling.
Copy !req
1718. I don't care what anyone says,
Copy !req
1719. you can't replace something like that.
Copy !req
1720. - Unashamed
Copy !req
1721. that it was my love letter to, you know,
Copy !req
1722. the wrestling business and to Ric Flair.
Copy !req
1723. - It is show day, and
we're off to the shi-zow.
Copy !req
1724. I've been doing this for 35 years,
Copy !req
1725. and days like today,
Copy !req
1726. it's a different kind of
anxiety that I have now.
Copy !req
1727. I have anxiety for the performers
Copy !req
1728. for the entire show as a whole.
Copy !req
1729. For me it's just all fantastic,
Copy !req
1730. especially when it goes well for them,
Copy !req
1731. and they come back and they're jacked.
Copy !req
1732. It's ten times better than—
Copy !req
1733. than when I had that opportunity.
Copy !req
1734. This is where I'm supposed to be.
Copy !req
1735. I absolutely love it.
Copy !req
1736. - What moment would you say
Copy !req
1737. you're most proud of, and
then by the same token,
Copy !req
1738. what moment would you
say you are least proud of?
Copy !req
1739. - Most proud I guess would be
Copy !req
1740. winning the world title.
Copy !req
1741. And least proud would
probably be the Montreal incident.
Copy !req
1742. One is everything you aspire to do,
Copy !req
1743. and the other is the complete opposite.
Copy !req
1744. Something you really
don't want to be a part of.
Copy !req
1745. It's the long-term guilt, it's the shame,
Copy !req
1746. it's the loathing that you
know this person has for you.
Copy !req
1747. - There was so much bad blood between us,
Copy !req
1748. and I was always like,
if I see him, I'll kill him.
Copy !req
1749. I've always believed
that I had so much anger,
Copy !req
1750. that I think it led to my stroke
Copy !req
1751. and lot of things that I went through.
Copy !req
1752. And I remember thinking about Shawn
Copy !req
1753. and how we were good
friends once upon a time,
Copy !req
1754. and, you know, that it wasn't just Shawn.
Copy !req
1755. I was guilty too.
Copy !req
1756. And I remember thinking
it'd be good to put it to bed.
Copy !req
1757. - And I've certainly talked about my regret
Copy !req
1758. and the hope for reconciliation.
Copy !req
1759. It took him some time to get there.
Copy !req
1760. Vince had suggested there's gotta be a way
Copy !req
1761. we can do this live, in front of the world.
Copy !req
1762. - I've got 12 years of things
Copy !req
1763. that I've wanted to get off my chest.
Copy !req
1764. I want to call back there
Copy !req
1765. and ask Shawn Michaels to come out here.
Copy !req
1766. I call for a truce,
Copy !req
1767. and I call for you to shake my hand.
Copy !req
1768. The fact that we did that in the ring
Copy !req
1769. and we shook hands and
all that was very honest
Copy !req
1770. and very sincere.
Copy !req
1771. - You know that everybody's watching
Copy !req
1772. when you are trying to
have this very real moment
Copy !req
1773. with one another.
Copy !req
1774. Art does imitate life.
Copy !req
1775. - He's matured, and he's a different guy,
Copy !req
1776. and I thought he finally, you know,
Copy !req
1777. he's got his priorities all in order.
Copy !req
1778. - Welcome
Copy !req
1779. to the 25th anniversary
Copy !req
1780. of WrestleMania!
Copy !req
1781. 70,000 WWE fans.
Copy !req
1782. - By the time Shawn Michaels and Undertaker
Copy !req
1783. meet at WrestleMania 25, they're veterans,
Copy !req
1784. they've been around forever.
Copy !req
1785. And somehow,
Copy !req
1786. they're actually both
in their absolute prime.
Copy !req
1787. - One of my favorite entrances,
Copy !req
1788. Shawn as The Undertaker,
Copy !req
1789. but in all white, ascending from the clouds.
Copy !req
1790. Such a stark contrast
to what I'm about to do.
Copy !req
1791. It was the battle between heaven and hell.
Copy !req
1792. - Prior to 2002,
Copy !req
1793. we did not have a great relationship.
Copy !req
1794. We did not like each other outside the ring.
Copy !req
1795. - This guy, I genuinely liked now.
Copy !req
1796. And it had been years and years and years
Copy !req
1797. since we had worked together,
Copy !req
1798. since the time that he had injured himself
Copy !req
1799. in the casket match.
Copy !req
1800. - Unknown to us at the time,
Copy !req
1801. we're about to create one of
the most epic things ever done
Copy !req
1802. in the wrestling business.
Copy !req
1803. - There's that brash arrogance.
Copy !req
1804. 70,000 chanting HBK
the other half, Undertaker.
Copy !req
1805. - Ooh! - Whoa!
Copy !req
1806. - You know when you're in the middle
Copy !req
1807. of something really special, and we did.
Copy !req
1808. - Incoming!
Copy !req
1809. Tombstone piledriver.
Copy !req
1810. - I just remember getting to Shawn,
Copy !req
1811. and we just embraced, and hugged,
Copy !req
1812. and thanked each other.
Copy !req
1813. It was an awesome moment.
Copy !req
1814. - It was on the ride home the next day,
Copy !req
1815. just settling into me that I just don't know
Copy !req
1816. that I'm ever going to encounter,
Copy !req
1817. from a performance standpoint,
Copy !req
1818. anything greater than that thing
Copy !req
1819. that I experienced last night.
Copy !req
1820. - There's only one match
Copy !req
1821. that can be considered Match of the Year,
Copy !req
1822. Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker.
Copy !req
1823. - Undertaker, I can beat you.
Copy !req
1824. You and me, WrestleMania, one more time.
Copy !req
1825. - So, I remember tuning into WrestleMania 26.
Copy !req
1826. I had a knot in my stomach
Copy !req
1827. knowing that if Shawn Michaels
wasn't able to win this one
Copy !req
1828. that he would retire.
Copy !req
1829. But it was a beautiful, artistic way
Copy !req
1830. to end the career of Shawn Michaels.
Copy !req
1831. - One, two, three!
Copy !req
1832. - Shawn Michaels' career is over.
Copy !req
1833. - My heart was broken. My heart was broken.
Copy !req
1834. But I'm glad also that he
got to leave on his own terms.
Copy !req
1835. - It was important that I get out of there
Copy !req
1836. to let the fans show him
