1. Mike.Copy !req
2. Hey.
Hey.Copy !req
3. Thanks for coming.Copy !req
4. Oh, yeah, of course.Copy !req
5. I'm just parked
across the street, so...Copy !req
6. Okay. I... I was
just gonna hit the...Copy !req
7. Yeah, sure.
I'll meet you out front.Copy !req
8. Okay.Copy !req
9. Janitor.
Anybody here?Copy !req
10. Higher!Copy !req
11. Higher?
Okay, you asked for it.Copy !req
12. Oh, sweetheart.
All right. Come on down.Copy !req
13. Pop-Pop's getting tired.
Aw.Copy !req
14. Don't "aw" me.Copy !req
15. You take a little break...
Little break.Copy !req
16. Go on.Copy !req
17. A good kid.Copy !req
18. Yeah, she is.Copy !req
19. So, how do you like it...Copy !req
20. Out west?Copy !req
21. I like it.
Wide-open spaces.Copy !req
22. (CHUCKLES) Yeah.Copy !req
23. Mmm.
Different, anyway.Copy !req
24. Yeah. (SNIFFS)Copy !req
25. How you doing?Copy !req
26. I'm... Yeah, I'm okay,
you know?Copy !req
27. Adjusting.Copy !req
28. And Kaylee?Copy !req
29. Yeah, she's settling in.Copy !req
30. She still asks
about him...Copy !req
31. "Where is Daddy?"Copy !req
32. She just misses him.Copy !req
33. Yeah.Copy !req
34. How long you in
town for, Mike?Copy !req
35. I'm here...Copy !req
36. For the duration,
indefinitely.Copy !req
37. I'm, uh...Copy !req
38. I'm better.Copy !req
39. And I'm sorry
it took me so long.Copy !req
40. But I'm not like I was.
I'm back. I'm solid.Copy !req
41. I want to be here for you,
for Kaylee, for my family.Copy !req
42. That's good.
I'm glad to hear
you're better.Copy !req
43. What?Copy !req
44. What is it, honey?Copy !req
45. Mike, I got to ask.
I mean...Copy !req
46. I know I just need to
move on from this,Copy !req
47. but I keep thinking
about something.Copy !req
48. About what?Copy !req
49. How, before Matty died,Copy !req
50. like, for a few weeks there,
he was... different.Copy !req
51. Different how?Copy !req
52. Different...
I don't know.Copy !req
53. Moody, you know?Copy !req
54. He barely ate.
He wasn't sleeping.Copy !req
55. He snapped at me about
the stupidest things.Copy !req
56. I started to think
something's up
at work or...Copy !req
57. Or someone's sick,
something like that,Copy !req
58. but he wouldn't talk to me.
He clammed right up.Copy !req
59. Cops aren't real touchy-feely.
You know that.Copy !req
60. No.Copy !req
61. (SCOFFS)
They're not. No.Copy !req
62. But this wasn't
the normal "tough guys
don't cry" crap.Copy !req
63. This was more.
I mean...Copy !req
64. Did you notice?Copy !req
65. I mean, did you feel
anything like that
from him?Copy !req
66. I don't...
As far as I remember,
he seemed okay.Copy !req
67. He seemed okay to me.Copy !req
68. Well, I started to think...
I'm...Copy !req
69. I don't know.
I didn't know what to think.Copy !req
70. But then...Copy !req
71. Three days or four...
I don't remember,Copy !req
72. but before he died,
there was this phone call.Copy !req
73. 2:30 in the morning,
I wake up,
and Matty's not in bed.Copy !req
74. And I hear him.
He's talking downstairs.Copy !req
75. So... I go to listen
on the stairs,
where he couldn't see.Copy !req
76. He gets intense.Copy !req
77. Like, he'd be screamingCopy !req
78. if he wasn't whispering,
you know?Copy !req
79. Matty didn't get worked up.
He'd let things go.Copy !req
80. But... But this...
I mean, he was angry.Copy !req
81. He was really angry.Copy !req
82. What was he saying?Copy !req
83. I couldn't make it out.
It was something about...Copy !req
84. I don't know.
I couldn't hear it.Copy !req
85. But the next morning,
I called him out,Copy !req
86. "What the hell was that about?
What's going on?"Copy !req
87. And he wouldn't
talk to me.Copy !req
88. But I think...Copy !req
89. I think he was
talking to you.Copy !req
90. Me?
I mean, who else?Copy !req
91. Huh?Copy !req
92. For one hot second,
I thought maybe
he was catting around...Copy !req
93. No, he wouldn't do that.Copy !req
94. No, I know.
I know that. But you...Copy !req
95. He knew he could call you
anytime he had a problem.Copy !req
96. You were thick as thieves,
the two of you.Copy !req
97. And there was
something in his voice.Copy !req
98. It was...
How he was talking.Copy !req
99. It makes me think
it was you.Copy !req
100. Stace,
I don't think it was.Copy !req
101. I can't recall
any late-night
heart-to-hearts with him,Copy !req
102. not around then.Copy !req
103. Maybe it was a C.I.
or a case.Copy !req
104. Listen.Copy !req
105. I know what you're doing,
replaying it over and over,Copy !req
106. thinking, "If I'd noticed
this or changed that,Copy !req
107. "maybe I could have
done something."Copy !req
108. You don't think I haven't had
those thoughts? I do.Copy !req
109. Every day.Copy !req
110. You got to quit beating
yourself up like this.Copy !req
111. Matty's gone.
(SIGHS)Copy !req
112. That's really
all there is to it.Copy !req
113. Yeah.Copy !req
114. I guess that's that.Copy !req
115. It's getting on.
I got to...Copy !req
116. Get Kaylee her dinner
and put her to bed.Copy !req
117. Uh, yeah.Copy !req
118. Okay.Copy !req
119. Well, if you want me
to drop byCopy !req
120. and keep an eye on her,
I...Copy !req
121. I want to help.Copy !req
122. See you around.Copy !req
123. Where to?Copy !req
124. "Francisco."Copy !req
125. Yeah.Copy !req
126. You know this town?Copy !req
127. Yeah, sure.Copy !req
128. How well?Copy !req
129. (DOGS BARKING, WHINING)
You sew this up yourself?Copy !req
130. Not bad.Copy !req
131. Bet there's
a story there.Copy !req
132. Isn't there always?
Yeah.Copy !req
133. All right.
Little sting here.Copy !req
134. Okay.
That ought to do it.Copy !req
135. Now...Copy !req
136. You're gonna want to
take it easy.Copy !req
137. Keep it clean.Copy !req
138. Keep it dry.
Let it heal.Copy !req
139. There's a Walgreens
a couple blocks over
on Louisiana.Copy !req
140. Maybe go get
yourself a sling.Copy !req
141. You don't have one?Copy !req
142. (CHUCKLING) Sorry.Copy !req
143. Got a cone you can put
around your neck.Copy !req
144. Yeah.Copy !req
145. It's about the same,
right?Copy !req
146. So, it's gonna be $500?Copy !req
147. $500.Copy !req
148. I can, uh, throw some
pills in for the pain.Copy !req
149. This stuff's
essentially Vicodin.Copy !req
150. I can give it to you
for $25 a pill...Copy !req
151. Maybe drop the price
to $15Copy !req
152. for something a little
less human-centric.Copy !req
153. I'm an aspirin man.
(SIGHS)Copy !req
154. Tell you what.
Take a couple
on the house.Copy !req
155. In case you
change your mind.Copy !req
156. You new in town?Copy !req
157. Yeah.Copy !req
158. Passing through
or sticking around?Copy !req
159. Why?Copy !req
160. No reason.Copy !req
161. It's just,
if you're relocating to
the Land of Enchantment,Copy !req
162. I know people.Copy !req
163. I could get you
some work.Copy !req
164. I am not looking
for that kind of work,Copy !req
165. but...Copy !req
166. (GROANS) Thanks.Copy !req
167. Don't know why
it has to be this way.Copy !req
168. Could have been friendly.Copy !req
169. Could have talked
in your house.Copy !req
170. You really want
the formal treatment?Copy !req
171. Lawyer.Copy !req
172. Come on, Mike.Copy !req
173. It's just
a couple of questions.Copy !req
174. Uh, ain't nothing
but a thing.Copy !req
175. Lawyer.Copy !req
176. You're not under arrest.Copy !req
177. Okay, did anybody here
say "arrest"? No.Copy !req
178. You want to walk, walk.Copy !req
179. I got to say, I, uh,Copy !req
180. expected more
cooperation from you
on this, cop to cop.Copy !req
181. Lawyer.Copy !req
182. Fine.Copy !req
183. What lawyer?Copy !req
184. Ehrmantraut.
Who's got him and where?Copy !req
185. That way.Copy !req
186. Hey, fellas.
How you doing?Copy !req
187. James McGill.
Here to see my client.Copy !req
188. What?Copy !req
189. You look like Matlock.
Uh, no.Copy !req
190. I look like
a young Paul Newman
dressed as Matlock.Copy !req
191. Where's my guy?Copy !req
192. (SIGHS)
Say hello to Barney Fife.Copy !req
193. Wrong show,
but thanks for playing.Copy !req
194. So, what happened?Copy !req
195. The Mayor didn't give you
enough stickers?Copy !req
196. You want to tell me
what we're doing here?Copy !req
197. Oh, here's your coffee.Copy !req
198. Uh, hope it's good
to the last drop,Copy !req
199. 'cause I'm billing you
the full hour for it.Copy !req
200. That's for you.Copy !req
201. Oh. That's very
thoughtful.Copy !req
202. You serious?Copy !req
203. Why did you have me
bring it to you?Copy !req
204. All right,
here's what's gonna happen.Copy !req
205. Those two cops out there
are from Philadelphia.Copy !req
206. They've come
a long way to see me.Copy !req
207. When they come in here,
we're all gonna have
a little chat.Copy !req
208. And when it's over,Copy !req
209. the young one,
who's been writing
in his little notebook,Copy !req
210. he's gonna take it
and put it in his jacket.Copy !req
211. And when he does that,Copy !req
212. I want you to
take that coffee
and spill it on him.Copy !req
213. Little accident,
that's all.Copy !req
214. And why, pray tell,
would I do that?Copy !req
215. Because I'm asking you to.Copy !req
216. It's the only reason
you're here.
(SIGHS)Copy !req
217. So I'm here because
you want me to assault
a police officer.Copy !req
218. I am asking you to
take a few ounces
of lukewarm coffeeCopy !req
219. and spill it on him.Copy !req
220. I doubt that satisfies
the definition
of "assault,"Copy !req
221. but, hey,
you're the lawyer.Copy !req
222. Right.
How silly of me.Copy !req
223. All you want is for me
to aid and abetCopy !req
224. you ripping off
that guy's notepad,Copy !req
225. 'cause that's what
you're doing here, right?Copy !req
226. Huh? What,
are you nuts?Copy !req
227. You can't be serious.Copy !req
228. Hey, I hate to
remind you of this,
but you owe me one.Copy !req
229. The assist I gave you
with the missing persons
problem?Copy !req
230. One good turn
and so forth?Copy !req
231. You want a good turn?
Here's your good turn,
okay?Copy !req
232. I'm gonna behaveCopy !req
233. like an honest-to-God,
law-abiding,
licensed attorney,Copy !req
234. 'cause, clearly,
you need oneCopy !req
235. with whatever the hell
is going on here.Copy !req
236. Now, those two jokers
out in the hallway...Copy !req
237. I'm gonna make sure
they dot their I's
and cross their T's...Copy !req
238. Everything square
and above board.Copy !req
239. That's what I'm gonna do,Copy !req
240. and you're gonna
be happy as hell
that I'm here.Copy !req
241. But this little
Juan Valdez
bump-and-dump... No.Copy !req
242. Not gonna happen.Copy !req
243. Hey, gentlemen,
we're prepared to
indulge you.Copy !req
244. Detective Escalara
will be sitting in with us,
as per APD policy.Copy !req
245. Okay with you, right?Copy !req
246. Fine with me.Copy !req
247. Okay.Copy !req
248. You got your lawyer, Mike.
Can we talk already?Copy !req
249. Great.
So, like we said,Copy !req
250. we're here
looking into this
Hoffman and Fensky thing.Copy !req
251. Yeah, and whatever
you can tell us...
Anything at all.Copy !req
252. Uh, hold on.
Hold on.Copy !req
253. "Hoffman. Fensky."Copy !req
254. (SMACKS LIPS)
Fill me in.Copy !req
255. Assume I know
absolutely nothingCopy !req
256. about my client here,
all right?Copy !req
257. Start at the beginning.
Jesus. Seriously?Copy !req
258. Look, don't let
Mr. Ehrmantraut's
dancing eyesCopy !req
259. and bubbly,
bon vivant personality
fool you.Copy !req
260. He's actually,
believe it or not,
somewhat taciturn.Copy !req
261. Shall I fan you gently,
so you don't go into shock?Copy !req
262. Start at the beginning,
okay?Copy !req
263. We're talking
Book of Genesis.Copy !req
264. (PEN SCRIBBLING)
Okay, Mr. McGill,
as you probably gathered,Copy !req
265. we...
Detective Sanders and ICopy !req
266. work for the Philadelphia
Police Department,Copy !req
267. as did Mr. Ehrmantraut
for nearly 30 years.Copy !req
268. Philadelphia?
Go, Eagles.Copy !req
269. Mr. Ehrmantraut
had a son, Matt.Copy !req
270. He, too,
was with Philly PD.Copy !req
271. He was a rookie officer
with about two years
on the job.Copy !req
272. He was a good cop.
Yes, he was.Copy !req
273. About nine months ago,
he respondedCopy !req
274. to a shots-fired call
in some Westside rattrap.Copy !req
275. Matt went in
with his partner,
Officer Troy Hoffman.Copy !req
276. They had
Sergeant Jack Fensky
backing them up.Copy !req
277. Unfortunately,
things got out of hand.Copy !req
278. The three of them
were ambushed,Copy !req
279. and, uh,
Matt didn't make it out.Copy !req
280. Hoffman and Fensky
returned fire,Copy !req
281. but the shooter got away.Copy !req
282. We chased a few leads,
shook up the usual suspects...Copy !req
283. Came up short.Copy !req
284. I'm very sorry
to hear it.Copy !req
285. Anyways,
we kept beating the bushes,Copy !req
286. kept coming up dry
until three months ago.Copy !req
287. That's when Hoffman and Fensky
both turned up deadCopy !req
288. in a vacant lot
out in Nicetown.Copy !req
289. Again, an ambush of some kind,
it looks like.Copy !req
290. And with whoever killed
Matt out there in the wind,
we're thinking...Copy !req
291. Well, it's our
operating theoryCopy !req
292. that Hoffman and Fensky
were mixed up in something,Copy !req
293. some bad business,Copy !req
294. and maybe that
got Matt killed.Copy !req
295. Yeah, sorry. I got to do
my lawyer thing here.Copy !req
296. Uh, what does my
client have to do
with any of this?Copy !req
297. Uh, Mike,
this is a Hail Mary.Copy !req
298. Uh, beyond that.Copy !req
299. I mean, if we had
any hard evidence or leads,Copy !req
300. we wouldn't be out here.Copy !req
301. Now, there's anything
you can tell usCopy !req
302. about what
Hoffman and Fensky
were into?Copy !req
303. Yeah, help us out, Mike.Copy !req
304. Help us catch
the bastard who
killed Matty.Copy !req
305. I don't know much
about Hoffman and Fensky.Copy !req
306. They were Matt's people.
I'd see them around
sometimes.Copy !req
307. I saw them in a bar
the night they died.Copy !req
308. It was McClure's,Copy !req
309. maybe the Red Dog...
Probably McClure's.Copy !req
310. Were they drinking
with anyone?Copy !req
311. It's a cop bar.
They were drinking
with everyone.Copy !req
312. Yeah, but did you
see them with anyone
in particular?Copy !req
313. I couldn't tell you.
I was...Copy !req
314. You know how I was.Copy !req
315. How you doing
these days?Copy !req
316. Feeling like I
crawled out from
the bottom of a bottleCopy !req
317. and working hard
to stay there.Copy !req
318. Although I've got to say,Copy !req
319. doesn't help much,
dredging up the past
like this.Copy !req
320. Let me ask you,Copy !req
321. uh, when did you come
out here to Albuquerque?Copy !req
322. It couldn't have been, uh,
too much later.Copy !req
323. I think it was
the very next day.Copy !req
324. Yeah? The day after
Hoffman and Fensky
died, huh?Copy !req
325. You didn't think
to, uh, stick around
once you heard the news?Copy !req
326. I don't think
I heard the newsCopy !req
327. till I was west
of Kansas City.Copy !req
328. Still, you, uh...Copy !req
329. You didn't come back
for the funerals, correct?Copy !req
330. Even though Hoffman
was Matt's partner?Copy !req
331. Uh, do you remember anything
about that night at the bar?Copy !req
332. Uh, did you talk to
Hoffman or Fensky
at all?Copy !req
333. Sorry. I got nothing.
They weren't my people.Copy !req
334. I'm sorry you guys
took a flier on me.Copy !req
335. I wish it'd have
paid off.Copy !req
336. That it?Copy !req
337. We done here?Copy !req
338. We're done here, yeah.Copy !req
339. Hey, that wasn't
so hard, huh?Copy !req
340. Thanks, Mike.
Yeah.Copy !req
341. Listen, we're probably
gonna kick around
for another couple of days,Copy !req
342. in case you think of
something, all right?Copy !req
343. You know, I've never been
out west before.Copy !req
344. Oh, hey.Copy !req
345. Oh!
Oh, shit!Copy !req
346. Jesus. Sorry. Sorry.
Come on!Copy !req
347. Here. I can get
most of it.
You got any paper towels?Copy !req
348. You know what?
Hey, hey.
I... I got it.Copy !req
349. I got it. Thank you.
Sorry.Copy !req
350. Oh, for the love of...Copy !req
351. You got to do that
right here,
right in front of me?Copy !req
352. What's so important
in thereCopy !req
353. that we had to
pull that third-rate
Marx Brothers routine?Copy !req
354. You really want to know?Copy !req
355. And risk getting a piece
of an obstruction rap?Copy !req
356. No, thank you.Copy !req
357. Anything else
you want to ask?Copy !req
358. How did you know?Copy !req
359. Know what?Copy !req
360. That... That I would
do that, that...Copy !req
361. How did you know
that I would, uh,
spill that coffee?Copy !req
362. What the hell's that?Copy !req
363. What's (MIMICS CHUCKLE)
supposed to mean, huh?Copy !req
364. Okay, great.
You're the strong,
silent type.Copy !req
365. Hooray for you.Copy !req
366. But in case
you missed it,Copy !req
367. your friends from
Philly back there?Copy !req
368. They think you
killed two cops.Copy !req
369. Yep. (SIGHS)Copy !req
370. Yeah, it's me.Copy !req
371. We need to talk.Copy !req
372. You call the cops?Copy !req
373. What?Copy !req
374. Philadelphia PD.
Did you call them?Copy !req
375. Yeah, I did.
Why?Copy !req
376. Well, I told them
I heard about
Hoffman and Fensky and...Copy !req
377. And what?Copy !req
378. (WHISPERING)
And you don't think
it's strange?Copy !req
379. First Matt,
then not six months later,Copy !req
380. his partner
and his sergeant?Copy !req
381. Yeah, I called them
to help catch
Matty's killer.Copy !req
382. Mike, what if
the same person,
if the...Copy !req
383. What if the piece of
shit who got Matty
got them too?Copy !req
384. And what exactly
did you tell them?Copy !req
385. I told them...
You tell them
Matt was dirty?Copy !req
386. Is that what
you told them?
I...Copy !req
387. How could you
possibly think that?Copy !req
388. That's your husband,
the father of your child.Copy !req
389. I didn't say that. I...Copy !req
390. I told them I found money.Copy !req
391. After Kaylee and I
moved here,
when I was unpacking,Copy !req
392. it was in the lining
of an old suitcase.Copy !req
393. Matt must have
tucked it away in there,
'cause this was cash...Copy !req
394. $5,000, $6,000
from God knows where.Copy !req
395. I mean, we were basically
paycheck to paycheck.Copy !req
396. Where the hell
did he get it?Copy !req
397. Why didn't you ask me?Copy !req
398. (SIGHS)
Why didn't
you come to me?Copy !req
399. I couldn't.Copy !req
400. I knew what
it would do to you.
(SIGHS)Copy !req
401. First, he's murdered,
and then for you to think...Copy !req
402. It would have
burned you to the ground.Copy !req
403. There would be
nothing left.Copy !req
404. And you wouldn't
talk to me.Copy !req
405. Every night,
you were drinking
yourself unconscious,Copy !req
406. like you were
the only one
who lost him.Copy !req
407. Look, I don't care.
He was dirty,
he was clean...Copy !req
408. I don't care.Copy !req
409. All I want is for
whoever killed MattyCopy !req
410. to rot in a cell for
the rest of their life,Copy !req
411. and then I want
whatever's left of them
just dumped in the trash.Copy !req
412. That's what I want.Copy !req
413. I don't care
where it leads,
what it uncovers.Copy !req
414. I mean,
what difference
would it makeCopy !req
415. if he was... anything?Copy !req
416. I'd still love him.Copy !req
417. I'd still miss him.
He'd still be gone.Copy !req
418. Matt wasn't dirty.Copy !req
419. Well, so be
straight with me!Copy !req
420. Right now.
This is it, Mike.Copy !req
421. What was that phone call
before he died?Copy !req
422. Don't bullshit me.Copy !req
423. (VOICE BREAKING)
That was between
me and my son.Copy !req
424. So you're admitting
it was you.Copy !req
425. He wasn't dirty!Copy !req
426. Goddamn you!
You get that
through your head!Copy !req
427. My son wasn't dirty!Copy !req
428. Just let him cry it
all out, okay?Copy !req
429. Hey, Mikey.Copy !req
430. Young Hoffman.
Mikey boy.Copy !req
431. What's going on,
my brothers?
How you doing?Copy !req
432. Brothers, huh?Copy !req
433. Good to see you, too.
It's been a minute.Copy !req
434. Yeah. (BREATHES DEEPLY)Copy !req
435. I know.
I know it was you.Copy !req
436. Closing time, Mikey.Copy !req
437. Yeah?Copy !req
438. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.Copy !req
439. Hey, how about I
give you a lift home?Copy !req
440. Mmm...Copy !req
441. I'm fine.Copy !req
442. No, I can't let you drive.
Get you a cab?Copy !req
443. No, I'm good.
I'm good.Copy !req
444. Don't worry.Copy !req
445. Anyway, I sold my car,
so I'm walking.Copy !req
446. Thank you.Copy !req
447. Albuquerque,
New Mexico.Copy !req
448. You ever been?
Nope.Copy !req
449. Well...Copy !req
450. That's where I'm headed.Copy !req
451. Tarantulas, they got.
(CHUCKLES)Copy !req
452. That's a big minus
in my book.Copy !req
453. (CHUCKLES) Well,
I will be on the lookout.Copy !req
454. You take care,
my friend.Copy !req
455. Take care.Copy !req
456. Hey, Mike.Copy !req
457. Mikey.Copy !req
458. You want a ride?Copy !req
459. I'll walk it.Copy !req
460. Pull over here.Copy !req
461. What are you
doing out here?Copy !req
462. Come on.
Let us drive you.Copy !req
463. It's colder than
my ex-wife's tit out here.Copy !req
464. Come on. Come on.Copy !req
465. I'm walking.Copy !req
466. Come on. Don't...
Don't be an ass.Copy !req
467. Come on.
Let us take you home.
Get in the car already.Copy !req
468. It's cold out here.Copy !req
469. What?
Come on, Mike.
Come on.Copy !req
470. (GRUNTS)
Come on.Copy !req
471. Okay. Easy.Copy !req
472. We're gonna have you
home in no time.Copy !req
473. Oh, God.Copy !req
474. Hey.
What are you doing?Copy !req
475. Hey. Give me that.
That's mine.Copy !req
476. Later.Copy !req
477. We don't want you
to shoot your foot off,
now, do we?Copy !req
478. Hey, Mikey.
What?Copy !req
479. Mikey, you with us?Copy !req
480. Why?Copy !req
481. You really tied one
on good back there,
buddy.Copy !req
482. Shit, yeah, he did.Copy !req
483. Put it away
like they were fixing
to bring back Prohibition.Copy !req
484. Hey. Hey,
back at McClure's,Copy !req
485. you were talking
out your ass, hmm?Copy !req
486. "I know it was you."
(CHUCKLES)Copy !req
487. What's that
supposed to mean, huh?Copy !req
488. You think you know what?Copy !req
489. You got
something you want to
get off your chest?Copy !req
490. Something you
want to say to us?Copy !req
491. You killed him.Copy !req
492. You killed Matty.Copy !req
493. And you killed him
for nothing.Copy !req
494. You killed him
because you were scaredCopy !req
495. of what you
thought he might do.Copy !req
496. You got him
in that crack house...Copy !req
497. And you staged it...Copy !req
498. Made it look like
a junkie with a gun.Copy !req
499. But it was you.Copy !req
500. And I know it was you.Copy !req
501. And I'm gonna prove it.Copy !req
502. Help me get him
out of the car.Copy !req
503. What?Copy !req
504. Come on.
There you go.
Watch your head.Copy !req
505. All right,
come on, Mike, huh?Copy !req
506. One, two, one, two,
buddy.Copy !req
507. Now, you wait there
one second.Copy !req
508. We're gonna work this
whole thing out,
okay, Mikey?Copy !req
509. What do we do now?Copy !req
510. Hey. Grief,
it's a bitch.Copy !req
511. He couldn't live with it...
Matt dying the way he did.Copy !req
512. It's too much
for the old man.Copy !req
513. So Mikey here decided
to eat his gun.Copy !req
514. It's tragic,
but anyone could
see this coming, hmm?Copy !req
515. He's drinking
himself to death.Copy !req
516. We're doing him
a favor.Copy !req
517. Smart.Copy !req
518. That's what I would
have done if I were you.
Whoa.Copy !req
519. Mike, I...Copy !req
520. You let some things slide
and you look the other way.Copy !req
521. You bust a drug dealerCopy !req
522. that has more cash
than you'll ever
earn in a lifetime.Copy !req
523. Some of it
doesn't make it
back into evidence.Copy !req
524. So what?Copy !req
525. You took a taste.
So did everyone else.Copy !req
526. That's how you knew
you were safe.Copy !req
527. It's like killing Caesar...Copy !req
528. Everyone's guilty.Copy !req
529. Matt wasn't dirty.Copy !req
530. I was.Copy !req
531. Everyone was
in that precinct.Copy !req
532. That's how it worked.Copy !req
533. You turn in your buddy,
you're screwing yourself.Copy !req
534. You go along
to get along.Copy !req
535. And you went along.Copy !req
536. I did.Copy !req
537. Yeah.Copy !req
538. I did.Copy !req
539. Okay.
But you said Matt didn't.Copy !req
540. No.Copy !req
541. Not Matt.Copy !req
542. Fensky got to
Hoffman early.Copy !req
543. Kickbacks from
some gang or another...Copy !req
544. Protection, basically.Copy !req
545. And Hoffman went to Matty
and offered to cut him in.Copy !req
546. Only fair, right?
They were partners.Copy !req
547. And Matt did
what you would think...Copy !req
548. He agonized.Copy !req
549. And then he came to me,
wanted to go to the IA,Copy !req
550. do the right thing,
shut 'em down.Copy !req
551. Oh, my God.
And you let him?Copy !req
552. That's why he got killed?
'Cause he was gonna
turn on those guys?Copy !req
553. No. No.Copy !req
554. I told him...Copy !req
555. You know what
a cop fears most?Copy !req
556. More than getting shot,
more than anything?Copy !req
557. Prison.Copy !req
558. Getting locked up
with everybody
you put away.Copy !req
559. You threaten a cop
with that,Copy !req
560. you make him dangerous,Copy !req
561. and that's
what I told him.Copy !req
562. I talked sense.Copy !req
563. No one
was getting hurt.Copy !req
564. But if you
go to the IA,Copy !req
565. if you even look
like you're going...Copy !req
566. He had a wife,Copy !req
567. a kid,Copy !req
568. responsibilities.Copy !req
569. Take the money.
Do something good with it.Copy !req
570. Well...Copy !req
571. I tried.Copy !req
572. I tried.Copy !req
573. But he wouldn't listen.Copy !req
574. My boy was stubborn.Copy !req
575. My boy was strong.Copy !req
576. And he was gonna
get himself killed.Copy !req
577. (VOICE BREAKING)
So I told him...Copy !req
578. (NORMAL VOICE)
I told him I did it, too,Copy !req
579. that I was like Hoffman,
getting by,Copy !req
580. and that's what you
heard that night...Copy !req
581. Me talking him down,Copy !req
582. him kicking and screaming
until the fight
went out of him.Copy !req
583. He put me up
on a pedestal...Copy !req
584. And I had to show himCopy !req
585. that I was down in the gutter
with the rest of them.Copy !req
586. Broke my boy.Copy !req
587. (VOICE BREAKING)
I broke my boy.Copy !req
588. He went to Hoffman,
he took the money,Copy !req
589. but he hesitated.Copy !req
590. Even looking like
you're doing the right
thing to those twoCopy !req
591. meant that he
wasn't solid,Copy !req
592. that he couldn't
be trusted.Copy !req
593. I got Matty
to take the money.Copy !req
594. And they killed him
two days later.Copy !req
595. He was the strongest
person that I ever knew.Copy !req
596. He'd have never done it,
not even to save himself.Copy !req
597. I was the only one...Copy !req
598. I was the only one
that could get himCopy !req
599. to debase himself
like that.Copy !req
600. And it was for nothing.Copy !req
601. I made him lesser.Copy !req
602. I made him like me.Copy !req
603. And the bastards
killed him anyway.Copy !req
604. Hoffman and Fensky...Copy !req
605. If they killed Matty...Copy !req
606. Who killed them?Copy !req
607. (WHISPERS) Pop...Copy !req
608. What happened?Copy !req
609. You know what happened.Copy !req
610. The question is...Copy !req
611. Can you live with it?Copy !req
