1. This year, 6,500 failing bars nationwide

2. will close their doors for good. If things don't change soon,

3. the Lucky Leprechaun Irish Saloon in Davenport, Florida,

4. will become just another statistic.

5. In 2010, husband and wife Terry and Georgiann went all in

6. on reviving a closed, run-down bar in Davenport,

7. a working-class suburb outside of Orlando.

8. When I came in, and had a look at the place,

9. I said, "hell no!" Georgiann talked me into it.

10. As soon as they began renovating

11. they discovered multiple unforeseen problems.

12. We found that the electrical was nothing but extension cords.

13. Carpet on the flooring.

14. The kitchen area was just covered in black mold.

15. It was in bad shape.

16. To get the Lucky Leprechaun open and past inspection

17. was about 60,000 dollars.

18. Tapped out on cash, Terry and Georgiann didn't see eye-to-eye

19. from the very beginning.

20. You continue to make the decisions.

21. He sees the negative and I see the positive.

22. That is bull.

23. We don't agree on anything.

24. With the business failing, and his marriage strained,

25. Terry's attitude took a turn for the worse.

28. I went from being the happy-go-lucky guy,

29. to a grumpy, Irish bastard. Go yourself.

30. Terry's an issue with the bar.

31. You used to be just a very fun and happy guy.

32. I hate everybody.

33. When he leaves, we're all like, "yay, he's gone"!

34. If I come in as a patron, and Terry is in the bar, I leave.

35. If Terry isn't yelling at people,

36. he's spending his time hustling customers on the pool tables.

37. This'll be easy money.

38. How many times Terry has hustled a pool game?

39. Whenever he's in the mood. And that's frequently.

40. It's what he does.

41. Fed up with Terry's behavior,

42. Georgiann decided to make a change.

43. I realized that he wasn't the person I thought I had married.

44. My divorce was finalized about two years ago, but

45. we're not in a situation were we can afford to live separately.

46. She has one half of the house...

47. This is, uh, kind of our common area.

48. I have the other half. This is my apartment.

49. Georgiann and I are roommates and business partners.

50. Our debt that we've incurred is about 300,000 dollars.

51. If the bar doesn't turn around, I would have no assets,

52. no backup plan, no game plan, no home.

53. All this bar business I've been in will be for nothing.

54. Terry and Georgiann have agreed to pull back the doors,

55. bust open the books, and make a call for help to Bar Rescue.

59. We're about 15 miles southwest of Orlando.

60. - Close to the theme parks. - Yeah.

62. the Lucky Leprechaun. Irish saloon.

63. I mean the Lucky Leprechaun is kinda fun and catchy, but

64. "Irish saloon" doesn't really work for me.

65. For the bar, Jon is joined by mixologist Phil Wills,

66. an expert in designing custom drinks for custom crowds.

67. How many Irish saloons have you been in?

68. Unless it's a new thing I don't know about,

69. not yet to this day.

70. And for the kitchen, Jon brought in expert chef Vic Vegas.

71. His ability to create low-cost, quality food programs

72. is exactly what this bar needs.

73. You wonder, is it country western in there?

74. Is it Irish in there? Are there Irish cowboys in there?

75. What's going on in there? Sign pops, right?

76. Can you see the bar underneath it?

79. So the sign is so bright

80. that it makes the whole bar disappear underneath it.

90. The owner is Terry and Georgiann.

93. They bought this bar seven years ago.

94. They're now in a hole 300,000 dollars.

95. It's gotten so bad they got divorced.

96. But she can't afford to move out,

97. he can't afford to move out, and the two of them

98. are working in this bar, stuck like prisoners.

100. And they're losing 2,000 dollars every month, and

101. at some point they're gonna lose their house and everything.

121. if they're gonna make it, make it all the same.

122. So they have a fryer back there, or...

123. It looked like they had one of those tabletop fryers.

124. You notice there's nobody cooking?

125. I don't see one bit of food,

126. but the food that's being brought into the bar.

129. This bar is filled with smoke.

130. Non-smokers will never come to this bar.

131. Look at these pool tables, he has seven of them.

135. And there he is. So this is a guy who plays pool all day

136. rather than running his bar.

140. It drives me crazy that his bar is falling apart around him,

528. His name is Vic Vegas, one of my dearest friends.

529. Now we understand this market. The median household income

530. in this area is about 51,000 a year.

531. This is not a wealthy community.

533. These are people that are looking for value,

534. so we've gotta position this bar for the market.

535. That's what Phil is an expert in, in this cocktail program.

536. And Vic is an expert in creating some fun in this food program.

537. So we gotta lot of work to do, you guys agree?

541. Last night during recon I saw a lot of inconsistency

542. with the drinks that the bartenders were producing.

543. They were making the same drink,

544. and they were absolutely looking different.

545. I'm going to introduce cocktails that are very simple to produce,

546. but have a great flavor profile.

547. Your demographics within this area,

548. little bit on an older level.

549. People are drinking a lotta whiskey around here.

550. So what we're gonna do is just gonna make a nice variation

551. of an Old Fashioned.

552. Two ounces of whiskey.

553. Three-quarter ounce of honey syrup.

554. Two dashes of old- fashioned bitters.

555. Add ice and stir for ten to fifteen seconds.

556. Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass.

557. Garnish with an orange twist.

558. We're gonna call this one Terry's Hustle.

559. For those guys that want like a nice, strong cocktail.

560. This is the one we're gonna be serving.

561. It's gonna blow your mind.

562. I drink and I love whiskey.

563. I really want you guys to focus on the

564. building of these cocktails, the ingredients that go into it,

565. and making sure that we're doing a consistent cocktail

566. every single time.

567. Our customers will definitely enjoy the drinks

568. that Phil's made for us.

569. But, I'm a little bit stressed out

570. about the stress test tonight, I'm not gonna lie.

571. My concern is being able to pay attention

572. to everybody and everything.

573. I think we're good, fruit-wise.

576. We don't have a functional kitchen.

577. So we gotta come up with something that the bartenders

578. can serve quickly and it doesn't take them away

582. what makes the most sense. When I play pool,

583. I want a cold beer in this hand,

584. and I want a hot dog in this hand.

585. The reason why we're using hot dogs

586. is 'cause we're gonna sell em' for 99 cents.

587. You got beer, why not use it? Hot dogs steamed in beer.

588. And in Florida, to have smoking in your establishment,

589. food sales need to be 10% or less,

590. and that 99 cent price bracket is gonna keep us

591. in that 10% or under so the smoking can presume.

592. - How long did that take me? - 15 seconds.

595. I think the hot dog idea is fantastic for this bar.

596. It's quick, it's easy, it's inexpensive.

597. So it's more of a case of us

598. making sure we're getting it out properly.
