1. I never thought I'd get through D-Day,
let alone the next phase.Copy !req
2. I thought I'd be killed instantly.Copy !req
3. I thought one of two things:
a quick death . . .Copy !req
4. . . . or I'd come through
without a scratch.Copy !req
5. I think everybody had fear. I think
there's people that can handle fear.Copy !req
6. I think I was probably one of them.Copy !req
7. I think I was just as scared
as anybody else, except I could think.Copy !req
8. It's a feeling you would
not let yourself down . . .Copy !req
9. . . . and you would not let your comrades
or your unit down.Copy !req
10. We all had fear, but we all
had training to know . . .Copy !req
11. . . .you try to handle your fear . . .Copy !req
12. . . . and work to accomplish
what you're supposed to be doing.Copy !req
13. Hey, it looks like what's-his-name.Copy !req
14. You know, from 1 st Platoon?Copy !req
15. - Our 1 st Platoon?
- It sure does.Copy !req
16. Blithe.Copy !req
17. Hey, Blithe.Copy !req
18. Blithe!Copy !req
19. Keep moving! Get down!Copy !req
20. Thought that was you.Copy !req
21. You alone?Copy !req
22. You're the first familiar faces
I've seen.Copy !req
23. I ain't surprised. They dropped us
all over the peninsula.Copy !req
24. We've been fighting with the 502nd
since we got here.Copy !req
25. You?Copy !req
26. Oh, I've been . . .Copy !req
27. - . . . trying to find Easy.
- Join the club.Copy !req
28. Spread out!Copy !req
29. Hey, fellas.Copy !req
30. - Look who decided to show up, Floyd.
- Hey, Luz.Copy !req
31. - Thought we'd never find you.
- You okay?Copy !req
32. - Get a load of this. Like it?
- It's real?Copy !req
33. - Of course.
- You like this?Copy !req
34. Oh, nice. That's a beauty, sarge.Copy !req
35. It's a hell of a poncho.Copy !req
36. My Luger's gonna put you all
to shame when I get it.Copy !req
37. How was your jump?Copy !req
38. - Missed the DZ.
- Yeah, that goes without saying.Copy !req
39. - I guess so.
- Got any souvenirs to trade?Copy !req
40. They're all ticking, unlike their
previous owners. Got anything good?Copy !req
41. Not yet.Copy !req
42. So have we lost anybody?Copy !req
43. Burgess took one in the face.
Wynn got pinked in the behind.Copy !req
44. - They're gonna be okay.
- That's good.Copy !req
45. - Run into Lt. Meehan on your travels?
- No. Why?Copy !req
46. Company HQ's still missing.
They think the plane went down.Copy !req
47. - They say he's gonna turn up.
- I ain't holding my breath.Copy !req
48. - Who's in command?
- Winters for now.Copy !req
49. Lt. Welsh is 1 st Platoon.Copy !req
50. - Easy Company on the road!
- 1 st Platoon!Copy !req
51. - Platoon! Move out!
- On your feet. Let's go, 1 st Platoon!Copy !req
52. - Easy's moving out. On your feet.
- Let's go!Copy !req
53. - Stand up, let's go! Here we go!
- Today, people!Copy !req
54. Listen! It'll be dark soon. Light
and noise discipline from here on.Copy !req
55. No talking, smoking or grab-fanny
with the man in front of you.Copy !req
56. - Where we headed to?
- We're taking Carentan.Copy !req
57. Sounds like fun.Copy !req
58. It's the only place where armor from
Omaha and Utah Beach can head inland.Copy !req
59. Until we take Carentan, they're stuck.
Taylor's sending the whole division.Copy !req
60. "Remember, boys, give me three days
and three nights of hard fighting . . .Copy !req
61. . . . and you will be relieved. "Copy !req
62. Lieutenant, I'll take point.Copy !req
63. Hoobler will be lead scout.Copy !req
64. - Blithe, glad you could join us.
- Thank you.Copy !req
65. 1 st Platoon, fall in behind
Fox Company.Copy !req
66. 2nd and 3rd Platoons, follow us.
Shake a leg.Copy !req
67. "Another thing to remember, boys:
flies spread disease.Copy !req
68. So keep yours closed. "Copy !req
69. Don't wake Jerry.Copy !req
70. - Damn it.
- What?Copy !req
71. - We lost F Company, sir.
- Again?Copy !req
72. - We lost F Company.
- Again?Copy !req
73. - Blithe, Skinny, guess what.
- Pass the word to hold up.Copy !req
74. - Take Blithe and go find F Company.
- Yes, sir. Come on, Blithe.Copy !req
75. Shit.Copy !req
76. - Did you send somebody?
- Hoobler and Blithe.Copy !req
77. Why are we stopped?Copy !req
78. This is about officers crapping out
on their training, Nix.Copy !req
79. Come on. Let's get this show
on the road.Copy !req
80. Dang mosquitoes.Copy !req
81. What is it?Copy !req

we found F Company.Copy !req
87. - I'll find out where these yokels are.
- Hey, who you calling a yokel?Copy !req
88. He's dead, private.Copy !req
89. - Did you find Fox Company?
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
90. Thought he—
I thought he had me.Copy !req
91. - Fallschirmjager.
- Paratrooper?Copy !req
92. Division thinks there's a regiment
of them holding Carentan.Copy !req
93. Well, there's one less to worry about.Copy !req
94. That's edelweiss.Copy !req
95. That only grows in the Alps
above the tree line.Copy !req
96. He climbed up there to get it. It's
said to be the mark of a true soldier.Copy !req
97. Take the 1 st straight up the middle.
We have to move quickly.Copy !req
98. I'll be right behind you
with 2nd and 3rd.Copy !req
99. - Go!
- Let's go, 1 st, let's go.Copy !req
100. Go, go! Go!Copy !req
101. Fire!Copy !req
102. - In the ditch! Down! Down! Down! Down!
- lncoming!Copy !req
103. - Goddamn it.

Get those MGs moving, will you?Copy !req
106. - Get them out of there!
- They're in the open!Copy !req
107. Go! Go!Copy !req
108. Get them going, Buck!
Follow me, Easy!Copy !req
109. Move out! Move out, men!Copy !req

- lncoming!Copy !req
119. That's an MG42!Copy !req
120. - Medic up!
- No! Stay down! He's shot!Copy !req
121. Get out of the dirt! Nazi!Copy !req
122. There's one in the upper—Copy !req
123. - Medic!
- Pull him back!Copy !req
124. Ah, shit!Copy !req
125. Sniper! Thataway! Second floor left!Copy !req
126. Ah, shit!Copy !req
127. I need some covering fire.
Ready, Luz?Copy !req
128. Okay, I'm out.Copy !req
129. Guarnere! Clear that sector
on the right!Copy !req
130. Hey, up with me!Copy !req

136. Let's go! Move! Go! Go!Copy !req
137. Start clearing these buildings.
Two to a house.Copy !req
138. Second two. Go! Go!Copy !req
139. Houses on the right!Copy !req
140. Check them and clear them!Copy !req
141. Turn left! Bring it up!Copy !req
142. Smash it.Copy !req
143. Grenade! Luz, come on, Luz.Copy !req
144. - Come on!

145. Shit!Copy !req
146. They got us zeroed! Spread it out!
Spread it out!Copy !req
147. - They got us zeroed!
- Go now!Copy !req
148. - Get out of the street!
- Get out of there!Copy !req
149. They got us zeroed!Copy !req
150. Get out of there! Go! Go!Copy !req
151. Get the hell out of the street! Move!Copy !req
152. Let's go! Go! Go!Copy !req
153. - Take cover!
- I need a hand over here!Copy !req
154. Medic!Copy !req
155. - Move over!
- Through the window!Copy !req
156. Come on. Let's get you out of here.
Come on, boy!Copy !req
157. Move! Move! Move!Copy !req
158. Get out of the street! Go! Go!Copy !req
159. Lip!Copy !req
160. Hey, buddy.Copy !req
161. You're okay, Lip. Everything's
where it should be.Copy !req
162. Come on. Upsy-daisy.Copy !req
163. - Check up front.
- Get Tipper up here with the bazooka.Copy !req
164. - Check across the front.
- Move on one!Copy !req
165. Hello? Anybody there?Copy !req
166. Tipper! Tip!Copy !req
167. Tipper! Answer me! Tip!Copy !req
168. - Joe? That you?
- Looking good, Tip.Copy !req
169. Looking real good. Come here, buddy.
You gotta sit down. Come on.Copy !req
170. Easy, easy. There you go.
There you go.Copy !req
171. Ah, Jesus.Copy !req
172. You hang in there, buddy. We're gonna
get you fixed up, all right?Copy !req
173. Okay. Guys, you wanna give me
a hand here? Come on.Copy !req
174. Take the left flank!
Take the left flank!Copy !req
175. Got a bad one.Copy !req
176. Padre!Copy !req
177. - In the name of the Father, the Son—
- You see what I'm seeing?Copy !req
178. —is now and forever shall be,
world without end. Amen.Copy !req
179. - Crazy fools, the lrish.
- You should know.Copy !req
180. Smokey, the window. Let's go!Copy !req
181. - Morning, sir.
- What's your name, trooper?Copy !req
182. Farnsworth from Able Company,
501 st.Copy !req
183. We got it clear from here all the way
to the north of them Krauts.Copy !req
184. Tell your CO 506 secured
all positions south of you.Copy !req
185. Sir, I'll tell him. Come on, let's go!Copy !req
186. Lieutenant Winters.Copy !req
187. - Yes, sir?
- Is it safe to cross now?Copy !req
188. - What's that, sir?
- Is it safe to cross?Copy !req
189. - We wanna move the wounded.
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
190. Okay.Copy !req
191. Come on. Let's get them out of here.Copy !req
192. There she is.Copy !req
193. Plasma drip.Copy !req
194. You're lucky it was a ricochet.Copy !req
195. - Just caught a piece of it.
- Stupid.Copy !req
196. - What?
- Nothing.Copy !req
197. Walking wounded to the rear.Copy !req
198. - You gonna be able to stay off it?
- Doesn't look that way.Copy !req
199. Well, you gotta try, huh?Copy !req
200. What've we got planned?Copy !req
201. Well, we expect a counterattack.Copy !req
202. Carentan's important to them.Copy !req
203. - Any idea when?
- We're not waiting around to find out.Copy !req
204. Battalion wants us to head east,
set up a defensive position.Copy !req
205. With the flooded fields,
it's the direction they'll come from.Copy !req
206. - You gonna be all right?
- Yeah.Copy !req
207. Good.Copy !req
208. What's wrong with Blithe?Copy !req
209. Well, nothing. Except he can't see.Copy !req
210. - He can't see?
- So he says.Copy !req
211. Blithe?Copy !req
212. It's Lieutenant Winters.Copy !req
213. What happened?Copy !req
214. I don't know, sir.Copy !req
215. Well, things . . . . They just
kind of went black on me.Copy !req
216. - What, you can't see?
- Not a thing, sir.Copy !req
217. I can't see a thing.Copy !req
218. Well, you just take it easy, Blithe.Copy !req
219. I'll get you out of here.
Get you back to England.Copy !req
220. It's gonna be okay.Copy !req
221. Sir . . .Copy !req
222. - . . .l didn't wanna let anyone down.
- No.Copy !req
223. Just take it easy.Copy !req
224. It's okay, son.Copy !req
225. Sir?Copy !req
226. - What is it?
- Thank you, sir.Copy !req
227. I'm okay.Copy !req
228. Yeah, I'm okay.Copy !req
229. I'm okay. I think I'm okay.Copy !req
230. You can see?Copy !req
231. God, I don't know what happened.Copy !req
232. I think— I think I'm okay.Copy !req
233. All right.Copy !req
234. Well, stay a little while longer
and make sure.Copy !req
235. And then you can report
back to your platoon.Copy !req
236. Yes, sir.Copy !req
237. Now can we get that bandage on?Copy !req
238. Yeah.Copy !req
239. - Berlin by Christmas is how I see it.
- Yeah, you're full of it.Copy !req
240. Oh, God. This Kraut cheese
tastes like—Copy !req
241. - It stinks.
- Bread's stale too.Copy !req
242. Give me that.Copy !req
243. The way we came and took over? Don't
seem like Jerry's got much fight left.Copy !req
244. Don't get hit in the face when Jerry
throws in the sponge, all right?Copy !req
245. You mark my words, Mal:
Berlin by Christmas.Copy !req
246. Enjoy it while it lasts.
We're moving out soon.Copy !req
247. Out of town, lieutenant? Already?Copy !req
248. That's right.Copy !req
249. Don't they know we're just getting
settled here?Copy !req
250. Nice, Groucho.Copy !req
251. - What?
- Real smart.Copy !req
252. You're taking your life
in your own hands. Right?Copy !req
253. I told you. I didn't see it.Copy !req
254. What, Speirs shooting the prisoners,
or the sergeant in his own platoon?Copy !req
255. - I didn't hear that!
- He shot one of his own?Copy !req
256. Supposedly, the guy refused
to go on a patrol.Copy !req
257. Who knows if it's true?Copy !req
258. Well, I know a guy . . .Copy !req
259. . . . who said an eyewitness told him
Speirs hosed those prisoners.Copy !req
260. Why? What for?Copy !req
261. On D-Day.Copy !req
262. Speirs comes across these Kraut
prisoners digging a hole . . .Copy !req
263. under guard and all.Copy !req
264. He breaks out a pack of smokes,
passes them out.Copy !req
265. He even gives them a light.Copy !req
266. Then, all of a sudden,
he swings up his Thompson and:Copy !req
267. He hoses them.Copy !req
268. I mean, goddamn!Copy !req
269. He gives them smokes first?Copy !req
270. - That's why I don't think he did it.
- You don't?Copy !req
271. I heard he didn't.Copy !req
272. No, it was him, all right.Copy !req
273. But it was more than eight.
More like 20.Copy !req
274. Hell of a shot.Copy !req
275. All except one guy,
who he left alone.Copy !req
276. From what I heard, he took that last
105 on D-Day practically by himself.Copy !req
277. - That I saw.
- On his own?Copy !req
278. I don't care if any
of the other stuff's true.Copy !req
279. - Grab your smokes and gear.
- What do you think?Copy !req
280. I don't know.Copy !req
281. Gonna take everybody's word.
I didn't see it.Copy !req
282. Let's go! 1 st Platoon! Weapons on me.
We're moving out.Copy !req
283. On your feet! Tactical columns!
Flankers out!Copy !req
284. Flanks up!Copy !req
285. - That means you, Private Blithe.
- Come on, bud. Get up.Copy !req
286. You want the bread?Copy !req
287. Hey, Luz.
How far are we going?Copy !req
288. Oh, Jesus Christ, Frank. I don't know.
Until they tell us to stop.Copy !req
289. High ground. There's high ground
up ahead.Copy !req
290. Okay, genius.
Answer me this then:Copy !req
291. Why is Easy the only company who's
either at the front of an advance . . .Copy !req
292. . . . or, like now, exposed
at the edge of the line?Copy !req
293. - To keep you on your toes.
- No.Copy !req
294. We're never in the middle . . .Copy !req
295. . . . and we're the fifth of nine
of this regiment.Copy !req
296. - Able through ltem. Think of it.
- See there? You see that—Copy !req
297. lncoming!Copy !req
298. Contact right! Get in the hedgerow!Copy !req
299. See what I mean?Copy !req
300. Bring it around!Copy !req
301. Right there!
Sergeant More! Stay low!Copy !req
302. Luz, get down here with the radio!
Sergeant More! On me!Copy !req
303. Go, go, go!Copy !req
304. What have they got to sing about?Copy !req
305. Flash!Copy !req
306. Thunder.Copy !req
307. Catchy tune, ain't it?Copy !req
308. - Hey, lieutenant. What's the news?
- Same as it was this afternoon.Copy !req
309. - They're in their hedge, we're in ours.
- Spell me a minute, sir?Copy !req
310. You gonna let Blithe get some sleep?Copy !req
311. - My back teeth are floating.
- Get back ASAP.Copy !req
312. You can count on me, sir.Copy !req
313. How you doing, Blithe?Copy !req
314. I'm okay, sir.Copy !req
315. What happened
at the aid station today?Copy !req
316. Doc Roe, he called it
hysterical blindness.Copy !req
317. No, thank you, sir.Copy !req
318. You know what they said in basic:
Dehydration's a soldier's worst enemy.Copy !req
319. Here.Copy !req
320. It's a game, Blithe. That's all.
We're—Copy !req
321. Hell, we're just moving the ball
forward one yard at a time.Copy !req
322. Nothing but a game.Copy !req
323. What is, sir?Copy !req
324. This. The whole thing.Copy !req
325. No. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
326. Just a game.Copy !req
327. Harry.Copy !req
328. S2 said the Germans only left
a company to defend Carentan.Copy !req
329. - The rest pulled out last night.
- I knew that town was too easy.Copy !req
330. They regrouped south of town.Copy !req
331. May have been going to a counterattack
when we ran into them here.Copy !req
332. Strength unknown.Copy !req
333. They want the town back.Copy !req
334. And we're in their way.Copy !req
335. if they don't come before then,
we're attacking at first light, 0530.Copy !req
336. I'll tell the men to fix bayonets.Copy !req
337. Not much of a limp.Copy !req
338. - I'll survive.
- How is it?Copy !req
339. Hurts.Copy !req
340. War is hell.Copy !req
341. Smith, wake up.Copy !req
342. Come on, Smith. Get up.
It's your watch.Copy !req
343. It's your watch.Copy !req
344. Easy, Smith. It's me, Talbert!Copy !req
345. What are you doing?
That's Talbert!Copy !req
346. - I didn't—
- Goddamn!Copy !req
347. - Gosh!
- Medic!Copy !req
348. I didn't mean to.
He looked like a Kraut.Copy !req
349. - Can you breathe?
- I can breathe.Copy !req
350. - Look at me.
- Yeah, I can breathe!Copy !req
351. You're gonna be fine.Copy !req
352. What the hell is that?Copy !req
353. Sounds like it's coming
from 3rd Platoon.Copy !req
354. Don't you wanna get some sleep?Copy !req
355. I don't think—
I don't think I can.Copy !req
356. Then go take a look.Copy !req
357. - Flash.
- Thunder. Thunder!Copy !req
358. Lieutenant Speirs, sir.Copy !req
359. Where you going, private?Copy !req
360. Check out the noise, sir.Copy !req
361. I just came from there.
Everything's under control.Copy !req
362. Got some nervous privates
in your company.Copy !req
363. We do, sir.Copy !req
364. Yeah, we do. I can vouch for that.Copy !req
365. They just don't see how simple it is.Copy !req
366. How simple what is, sir?Copy !req
367. Just do what you have to do.Copy !req
368. Like you did on D-Day, sir?Copy !req
369. Lieutenant . . . .Copy !req
370. Sir, when I landed on D-Day, I found
myself in a ditch all by myself.Copy !req
371. I fell asleep.Copy !req
372. I think it was the air-sickness pills
they gave us.Copy !req
373. When I woke up, I didn't
really try to find my unit . . .Copy !req
374. . . .to fight.Copy !req
375. I just—Copy !req
376. I just kind of stayed put.Copy !req
377. What's your name, trooper?Copy !req
378. Blithe, sir. Albert Blithe.Copy !req
379. You know why you hid in that ditch,
Blithe?Copy !req
380. I was scared.Copy !req
381. We were all scared.Copy !req
382. You hid because you think
there's still hope. But, Blithe . . .Copy !req
383. . . . the only hope you have is to accept
that you're already dead.Copy !req
384. The sooner you accept that, the sooner
you'll function as you're supposed to.Copy !req
385. Without mercy. Without compassion.
Without remorse.Copy !req
386. All war depends upon it.Copy !req
387. Got any smokes? You want
some of this candy? No?Copy !req
388. The outpost got ammo.Copy !req
389. - Here you go.
- We don't know what they've got.Copy !req
390. They may be a weaker force,
maybe more paratroopers.Copy !req
391. - You know how they can be.
- Fire and maneuver.Copy !req
