1. It was three years since Lewis Nixon
and I decided to join the paratroops.Copy !req
2. And more than a year
since we went to war.Copy !req
3. Not knowing what would happen to us.
How long we'd be fighting.Copy !req
4. Where we'd end up.Copy !req
5. I certainly didn't expect to find
myself in a place like this.Copy !req
6. I thought it might be you.Copy !req
7. Morning.Copy !req
8. I heard reports about
a redheaded Eskimo.Copy !req
9. Thought I'd check it out.Copy !req
10. Come to join me for a morning swim?Copy !req
11. - Yeah.
- You know me so well.Copy !req
12. Here. It's from Zielinski.Copy !req
13. Oh, great.Copy !req
14. What is that?Copy !req
15. Ran into the regimental photographer.Copy !req
16. Said he had all these
photographs of the 506th...Copy !req
17. going all the way back to Toccoa.Copy !req
18. - I traded them for a couple of Lugers.
- That's a bargain.Copy !req
19. - What will you do after this?
- Get some breakfast.Copy !req
20. No. After, after.Copy !req
21. Funny you should mention it.
I had a meeting with Col. Sink.Copy !req
22. - Really?
- Yeah.Copy !req
23. Yeah, discussed the possibility
of staying.Copy !req
24. In the Army?Copy !req
25. Yeah. Yeah, as a career.Copy !req
26. What'd you say?Copy !req
27. I said I'd think about it.Copy !req
28. - What do you think about New Jersey?
- New Jersey?Copy !req
29. There's a company in Nixon, New Jersey
called Nixon Nitration Works.Copy !req
30. - Sounds picturesque.
- Yeah, well...Copy !req
31. oddly enough, I know the owners.Copy !req
32. Probably gonna expect me
to make something of myself.Copy !req
33. I thought maybe I'd drag you with me.Copy !req
34. Are you offering me a job?Copy !req
35. We'll see how your interview goes,
but a man of your qualifications...Copy !req
36. I think can scrape something up
commensurate with your current salary.Copy !req
37. Yeah, I'll think about it.Copy !req
38. I... . I really appreciate it.Copy !req
39. Yeah, just think about it.Copy !req
40. Yeah.Copy !req
41. Job offers.Copy !req
42. Hard to fathom.Copy !req
43. And the war wasn't even over.Copy !req
44. I was still getting used
to hot showers and morning swims.Copy !req
45. We'd entered Bavaria in early May with
the hopes of capturing Berchtesgaden.Copy !req
46. This famous town, high in the Alps,
was the Nazi Party's symbolic home.Copy !req
47. The heads of the Third Reich
had houses there.Copy !req
48. Though Hitler was dead,
he had ordered the SS...Copy !req
49. to mount a guerilla resistance
against the Allied advance from it.Copy !req
50. The first step was blocking the roads.Copy !req
51. - When do the engineers arrive?
- Half an hour ago.Copy !req
52. We're stuck here until they do, Nix.Copy !req
53. If you're the SS, you won't
let us waltz into Hitler's house.Copy !req
54. Probably throw rocks yourself.Copy !req
55. Easy Company is willing
to find another way up.Copy !req
56. Duly noted.
I recommended you to Col. Sink.Copy !req
57. - Let's find out where Hitler lived.
- Ron.Copy !req
58. We don't know what's there. The
colonel doesn't want us taking risks.Copy !req
59. So the French will beat us
to the Eagle's Nest?Copy !req
60. I just had a talk with Gen. LeClerc.Copy !req
61. He said he was first into Paris and
wanted to be first into Berchtesgaden.Copy !req
62. Told him I understood his point.Copy !req
63. Now you outflank
that French son of a bitch.Copy !req
64. Yes, sir.Copy !req
65. Easy Company leads.
Assemble on the Autobahn.Copy !req
66. Yes, sir.Copy !req
67. Eerie.Copy !req
68. Not even any natives.Copy !req
69. That's because in this town
you can't deny being a true Nazi.Copy !req
70. - What do you mean?
- You have to be to live here.Copy !req
71. We need to find some place
we can put the colonel.Copy !req
72. How about right there?Copy !req
73. No, no.Copy !req
74. Wow.Copy !req
75. Kitty would love this.Copy !req
76. How many brides get
a wedding present from Hitler?Copy !req
77. You wanna take half?Copy !req
78. I can't carry all this.Copy !req
79. Whoever comes after us will take
what isn't nailed down.Copy !req
80. Well. Wouldn't want that to happen.Copy !req
81. - Nice.
- Don't even think about it.Copy !req
82. - Maj. Winters. Sir.
- More.Copy !req
83. - Permission to climb the mountain?
- What is this?Copy !req
84. Wait one minute.Copy !req
85. Have F Company guard the hotel.
Set up roadblocks west of town.Copy !req
86. I want Battalion HQ, seal the north,
prepare for prisoners.Copy !req
87. - Sgt. Grant.
- And Harry...Copy !req
88. nobody gets hurt, not now.Copy !req
89. And Easy?Copy !req
90. Easy will head up through
the Obersalzburg...Copy !req
91. and take the Eagle's Nest.Copy !req
92. Hi-yo, Silver!Copy !req
93. Yeah! Currahee!Copy !req
94. The Eagle's Nest was Hitler's birthday
present, built with Nazi Party money.Copy !req
95. A mountaintop stone retreat
8000 feet up...Copy !req
96. accessible by
a gold-plated elevator.Copy !req
97. It was one of the crown jewels
of his empire...Copy !req
98. and he was afraid of heights.Copy !req
99. Here's to him.Copy !req
100. No, goddamn it, listen.Copy !req
101. Hitler, Hitler... No.Copy !req
102. Hitler, Himmler, Goering, Goebbels
and the pope walk into a bar...Copy !req
103. - Because he drinks too much...
- That's how it starts.Copy !req
104. Hey, Adolf! Love your Eagle's Nest.
I hope you don't mind.Copy !req
105. We made ourselves at home. Love what
you did with the place. Have a drink.Copy !req
106. Come on. Just so we can say
we saw you do it.Copy !req
107. Listen up.Copy !req
108. From Corps, just came in. "All troops
stand fast on present positions."Copy !req
109. - Standing fast.
- What does that mean?Copy !req
110. Wanna hear it?Copy !req
111. Ready for it? Listen up.
German army's surrendered.Copy !req
112. I got a present for you. Come on.Copy !req
113. Is it? Yeah?Copy !req
114. - What is this place?
- Goering's house.Copy !req
115. We found it yesterday.
Had it on guard since.Copy !req
116. - I'll vouch for that.
- Eager to get off duty?Copy !req
117. No, there's just so much
to see and do, sir.Copy !req
118. 10,000 bottles of the finest
liquor, wine and champagne...Copy !req
119. helped Easy Company mark
the day the war in Europe ended.Copy !req
120. It's all yours.Copy !req
121. Take what you want and have
each company take a truckload.Copy !req
122. We're going to Austria.
You don't have to leave anything.Copy !req
123. - Austria, sir?
- Happy V-E Day.Copy !req
124. Yeah.Copy !req
125. V-E Day?Copy !req
126. Victory in Europe.Copy !req
127. Happy V-E Day.Copy !req
128. Instead of a combat unit,
we became an occupation force.Copy !req
129. No one wanted to leave Berchtesgaden.
Until they saw Austria.Copy !req
130. So you reckon they'll make us
run up those or ski down them?Copy !req
131. Hey, how are you? Need a hand there?Copy !req
132. Hi! Hi! He loves you.Copy !req
133. Hey, lady, how are you?Copy !req
134. I think the war is over!Copy !req
135. We'll be comfortable here.Copy !req
136. What will happen to us,
to people like you and me...Copy !req
137. when there are finally
no more wars to occupy us?Copy !req
138. Have your men collect weapons.Copy !req
139. Leave them at the church,
school and airfield.Copy !req
140. Very well.Copy !req
141. Please accept this as my
formal surrender, major.Copy !req
142. It is better than to lay it
on the desk of a clerk.Copy !req
143. You may keep your sidearm, colonel.Copy !req
144. Heroic Army and Marine force dead
mark the battlefield of Okinawa...Copy !req
145. where a bloody engagement
is being fought.Copy !req
146. Thousands of Yanks have been
wounded or sacrificed their lives...Copy !req
147. to drive a fanatical foe
from this base.Copy !req
148. The Yanks progress slowly, facing one
of the fiercest barrages of the war.Copy !req
149. Each advance is gained by sheer grit
in the face of withering fire...Copy !req
150. from a suicidal enemy being
hammered back into the hills.Copy !req
151. The going is brutal
and casualties are high...Copy !req
152. but Okinawa is the next
step towards victory over Japan.Copy !req
153. A victory that can only be won by
work, war bonds and heroic sacrifice.Copy !req
154. - So when are we going?
- We don't have a date yet.Copy !req
155. Are we to tell the men right away?Copy !req
156. Some have enough
points to go home.Copy !req
157. Not many, if their only
medal's a Purple Heart.Copy !req
158. I think most of us here
will have enough.Copy !req
159. Each of us will decide what to do.
I don't know how long we'll wait...Copy !req
160. but I want those who are staying,
and all replacements, ready to fight.Copy !req
161. That means rifle ranges.
Daily close-order drills.Copy !req
162. Troop reviews. Above all, physical
training. Get your NCOs on it.Copy !req
163. They're gonna love you.Copy !req
164. What are you crouching for, Perco?Copy !req
165. - Think the deer's gonna shoot back?
- Leave me alone.Copy !req
166. How about y'all just shut up.
Let Shifty kill us some dinner.Copy !req
167. What's wrong? Tired of eating
dried-up spuds three times a day?Copy !req
168. I got an idea. Why don't we just shoot
Bull and feed the company for a week?Copy !req
169. Oh, goddamn it, Shifty.Copy !req
170. You let him get away. Army ought
to be glad to be rid of you.Copy !req
171. I wish. Seems they want me
to stay around a while.Copy !req
172. - Serious?
- How many points you need?Copy !req
173. - Fifteen.
- Fifteen?Copy !req
174. Jesus Christ, I thought I had it bad.Copy !req
175. No Purple Hearts, never was injured.Copy !req
176. - Company!
- Platoon!Copy !req
177. Attention!Copy !req
178. Right shoulder...Copy !req
179. arms!Copy !req
180. Order...Copy !req
181. arms!Copy !req
182. At ease.Copy !req
183. Gen. Taylor knows many veterans,
including Normandy veterans...Copy !req
184. do not have the 85 points
needed to be discharged.Copy !req
185. On this anniversary of D-Day,
he authorized a lottery...Copy !req
186. to send one man home in each
company, effective immediately.Copy !req
187. For Easy Company, the winner is...Copy !req
188. Come on, come on, come on.Copy !req
189. serial number 13066266.Copy !req
190. - Sgt. Darrell C. Powers.
- Shifty.Copy !req
191. That's how it's done, Shifty.Copy !req
192. Congratulations, Shifty.Copy !req
193. Sgt. Grant will see 2nd Platoon
takes over the checkpoint...Copy !req
194. beginning tonight at 2200.Copy !req
195. - So much for our anniversary.
- No shit.Copy !req
196. Gen. Taylor also announced
the 101st Airborne Division...Copy !req
197. will definitely be redeployed
to the Pacific.Copy !req
198. So beginning tomorrow at 0600,
we will begin training to go to war.Copy !req
199. Come in.Copy !req
200. I don't mean to interrupt you, sir.
I just wanted to say goodbye.Copy !req
201. You know, you was... .Copy !req
202. You was... .Copy !req
203. Well, it's been a long time.Copy !req
204. - You got everything you need?
- I gathered up my loot.Copy !req
205. Pistols, mainly. Paperwork's all done.Copy !req
206. I even got my back pay in my pocket.Copy !req
207. Back home in Virginia... .Copy !req
208. Well... .Copy !req
209. I just don't rightly know
how I'm gonna explain all this.Copy !req
210. You see, I... .Copy !req
211. I seen... . I seen... .Copy !req
212. You're a hell of a fine soldier,
Shifty.Copy !req
213. There's nothing more to explain.Copy !req
214. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
215. Two days later, Shifty Powers was
on a truck headed for a boat home.Copy !req
216. Unfortunately, the truck was hit
head-on by a drunken corporal.Copy !req
217. Shifty had a broken pelvis,
a broken arm and a bad concussion.Copy !req
218. He survived, but spent months
in a series of hospitals.Copy !req
219. I wish I could say he was
our only casualty in Austria.Copy !req
220. I've decided. I got the points,
I'm going back to Kitty.Copy !req
221. Do you really think Kitty hasn't
run off with some 4-F by now?Copy !req
222. Son of a bitch. That's not even funny.Copy !req
223. Harry, ignore him.Copy !req
224. How do I tell her I could have come
home, but decided to jump on Tokyo?Copy !req
225. All right, so don't tell her.Copy !req
226. She waited for three years. We'll
be back in two years, three tops.Copy !req
227. It'll be over before you get there.Copy !req
228. You'll be here six months waiting, and
I'll be in Wilkes-Barre making babies.Copy !req
229. - You didn't tell him?
- I couldn't shut him up.Copy !req
230. What? Tell me what?Copy !req
231. - Guts and Glory asked for a transfer.
- What?Copy !req
232. 13th Airborne are heading out
for the Pacific right away.Copy !req
233. If I'm going,
I wanna get it over with.Copy !req
234. - Are you in on this?
- I can't let him go by himself.Copy !req
235. You're leaving the men?Copy !req
236. They don't need me anymore.Copy !req
237. Wounded in Normandy?Copy !req
238. Yes, sir. In the leg.
It was a minor flesh wound.Copy !req
239. - Company E lost 24 men killed there.
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
240. Seventeen were in my commander's
plane. It went down on D-Day.Copy !req
241. You were given command
of the company on D-Day?Copy !req
242. That's right.Copy !req
243. Fall back to your original positions!Copy !req
244. Everyone else maintain
your pace of fire!Copy !req
245. In Holland, they bumped you
to Battalion XO.Copy !req
246. Yes, sir.Copy !req
247. Bastards took your company away.Copy !req
248. I fired my last shots there.Copy !req
249. For the whole damn war?Copy !req
250. Yes, sir.Copy !req
251. You got through Bastogne
without firing your weapon?Copy !req
252. That is correct, sir.Copy !req
253. - You were on the line the whole time?
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
254. Can't imagine a tougher test
for a leader.Copy !req
255. Having to sit through a siege
like that, under those conditions.Copy !req
256. - We got through it.
- Find some cover!Copy !req
257. Find some cover! Find a foxhole!
Come on, take cover!Copy !req
258. Take cover!Copy !req
259. Come on, find some cover!Copy !req
260. - So why do you want a transfer?
- Sorry, sir?Copy !req
261. Why do you want to leave your men?Copy !req
262. It's not that. If the war was still on
and I could do some good... .Copy !req
263. Looking to have your own division
some day?Copy !req
264. No, sir.Copy !req
265. - Not gonna make a career of the Army?
- No.Copy !req
266. Ye... Well, I don't know, sir.Copy !req
267. If you think you need more experience
to get stars on your helmet...Copy !req
268. let me tell you something, son:Copy !req
269. You've done enough.Copy !req
270. Thank you, sir.
That's not my objective.Copy !req
271. I took this meeting out of respect
for your achievements.Copy !req
272. And for the 101st.Copy !req
273. If they do go
to the Pacific eventually...Copy !req
274. you should be running
one of the battalions.Copy !req
275. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
276. And frankly, your men earned
the right to keep you around.Copy !req
277. Yes, sir.Copy !req
278. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
279. I would stay in Austria for the time
being, waiting for orders...Copy !req
280. and trying to watch over soldiers
with no enemy to fight.Copy !req
281. - Lieb, I fucking hate this.
- Oh, Jesus Christ. They fingered him.Copy !req
282. One of the Polacks at the slave camps
said this is where he lives.Copy !req
283. - Which camp?
- Whatever camp.Copy !req
284. I'm under direct orders
and I'm happy to follow it.Copy !req
285. - Is this a personal thing, Joe?
- What?Copy !req
286. - Is this personal to you?
- No, it's a goddamn order.Copy !req
287. - Does Maj. Winters know?
- Doesn't matter.Copy !req
288. The fuck it doesn't. What if he's just
a soldier? What if he's innocent?Copy !req
289. What if he's commandant
of a slave camp?Copy !req
290. Which camp? You don't have any proof.Copy !req
291. Were you at Landsberg?Copy !req
292. You know I was.Copy !req
293. Think he's a soldier like you and me?
A fucking innocent German officer?Copy !req
294. Where the hell you been
for the past three years?Copy !req
295. What?Copy !req
296. Shut up.Copy !req
297. Don't fucking lie to me.Copy !req
298. See what you did to my fucking people!Copy !req
299. That's it.Copy !req
300. He's guilty.Copy !req
301. - Liebgott says so.
- He probably is.Copy !req
302. Damn son of a bitch.Copy !req
303. Shoot him.Copy !req
304. - Shoot him!
- No.Copy !req
305. - Officers don't run.
- The war's over. Anybody would run.Copy !req
306. Summer in this Alpine paradise
should've been a relief.Copy !req
307. Especially now that we were at peace.
Everyone just wanted to go home.Copy !req
308. - France. France was the best.
- Really?Copy !req
309. Yeah.Copy !req
310. Five years. I think I was in every
country, but France was the best.Copy !req
311. Italy would be second for me.
Russia is not desirable.Copy !req
312. Ukraine, it was okay.Copy !req
313. So when do you get out?Copy !req
314. The unit is discharged. We leave
when my captain gets transferred.Copy !req
315. - It is the end of my second war.
- Jesus!Copy !req
316. - I'm going home, to Mannheim.
- I'll take this one.Copy !req
317. Okay.Copy !req
318. Hey, Webster. My relief.Copy !req
319. - Don't salute the Germans.
- Come on. I get a kick out of it.Copy !req
320. Anyway, I got me a new enemy.
The Japs.Copy !req
321. Seventy-five points. How about you?
You're a Toccoa guy, right?Copy !req
322. - How many you got?
- Wouldn't you like to know?Copy !req
323. Discharged, huh?Copy !req
324. - Go ahead, take off. It's my turn.
- Okay. See you at the farm.Copy !req
325. Eighty-one.Copy !req
326. I have 81 points.Copy !req
327. Well, that's just not good enough.Copy !req
328. See about getting you a ride.Copy !req
329. Hey. Hey. Where are they going?Copy !req
330. Munich.Copy !req
331. Wanna go to Munich?Copy !req
332. Get in.Copy !req
333. Too bad.Copy !req
334. Turn the wheel!Copy !req
335. Oh, Jesus.Copy !req
336. It's Pvt. Janovec.Copy !req
337. He was dead when they brought him in.Copy !req
338. Seventy-five points.Copy !req
339. - What?
- He was 10 points short.Copy !req
340. The enemy had surrendered,
but somehow men were still dying.Copy !req
341. Men who wanted to be home by now...Copy !req
342. who'd served since before Normandy,
were stuck because they lacked points.Copy !req
343. They did have plenty of weapons,
alcohol and time on their hands.Copy !req
344. Suddenly, from out of nowhere,
a guy jumps out of the hedgerow...Copy !req
345. shoves a knife against his throat
and screams, "Whose side are you on?"Copy !req
346. I don't get it.Copy !req
347. It's D-Day.
It's 2nd Platoon's own Bill Guarnere.Copy !req
348. Old Gonorrhea himself. Just landed
in Normandy and all wound up.Copy !req
349. "Whose side?" What a character.Copy !req
350. What happened to him?Copy !req
351. Got his leg blown off in Bastogne.Copy !req
352. Wait here.Copy !req
353. You okay, Mac?
You need some help?Copy !req
354. They wouldn't give me any gas.Copy !req
355. Krauts.Copy !req
356. I tried to explain.Copy !req
357. This fucking limey wouldn't listen.Copy !req
358. I think he was a major.Copy !req
359. - Look, private, we got a problem here.
- Do you have any gas?Copy !req
360. Why don't you give me your weapon?Copy !req
361. Well, I guess I'll just use his jeep.
I don't think he's gonna need it.Copy !req
362. Hold on a second, all right?Copy !req
363. Jesus!Copy !req
364. Sarge! Sgt. Grant!Copy !req
365. Sarge!Copy !req
366. - Jesus.
- What?Copy !req
367. He's not gonna make it.Copy !req
368. - You can't operate?
- You'd need a brain surgeon.Copy !req
369. And even if you had one,
I don't think there's any hope.Copy !req
370. Find the shooter, alive. Help me.
We're gonna go find a brain surgeon.Copy !req
371. He wants noncoms guarding roadblocks
and men watching roads out of town.Copy !req
372. Bull, Malark, take a squad
and a witness to search houses.Copy !req
373. - Can we shoot this bastard on sight?
- Try and take him alive.Copy !req
374. Where's Grant now?Copy !req
375. They took him to a Kraut hospital
to find a good doctor.Copy !req
376. Open up.Copy !req
377. Come with me.Copy !req
378. - Why?
- Get in the jeep.Copy !req
379. - Where are we going?
- To the hospital. Get in.Copy !req
380. If you're going to shoot, shoot.
If not, put the gun away.Copy !req
381. Get in the jeep, now.Copy !req
382. - What happened to him?
- He was shot in the head.Copy !req
383. Half-hour ago.Copy !req
384. - Come on.
- If you want him to live, help me.Copy !req
385. First, by putting that away.Copy !req
386. - Let's go.
