1. We were in a store, and a guy in that
store told us to put our uniforms on.Copy !req
2. "What the hell are you talking about?"Copy !req
3. He says, "The U.S.A.'s
in a war with Japan. "Copy !req
4. We couldn't believe it.Copy !req
5. Our country was attacked.
It's a different—Copy !req
6. It wasn't like Korea or Vietnam.
We was attacked.Copy !req
7. And, you know, it was a feeling of . . . .Copy !req
8. Maybe we're just dumb country
people where I come from . . .Copy !req
9. . . . but a lot of us volunteered.Copy !req
10. "Who would like to volunteer
for the Tank Corps? For the Air Force?Copy !req
11. For the Navy?" Or whatever.Copy !req
12. Then they said, "Who would
volunteer for the Airborne?"Copy !req
13. So I says,
"What the hell's the Airborne?"Copy !req
14. We came from a small, small town . . .Copy !req
15. . . . and three fellows in that town
that were 4-F committed suicide.Copy !req
16. Because they couldn't go.
A different time.Copy !req
17. I did things. I didn't do them
for medals or accolades.Copy !req
18. I did them because they . . . .
It's what had to be done.Copy !req
19. The guy says, "You jump out
of airplanes to fight the enemy. "Copy !req
20. These guys said, "Go to hell. "
Nobody put up their hands.Copy !req
21. And I don't know
what brought it up . . .Copy !req
22. . . . but the guy speaking said,
"You get paid $50 a month more. "Copy !req
23. So that made it 100 bucks.Copy !req
24. Okay, boys, let's get
this gear stowed.Copy !req
25. Fox Company, we go in five.Copy !req

35. High winds on the drop zone.
No jump tonight.Copy !req
36. The invasion has been postponed.
We're on a 24-hour stand-down.Copy !req
37. - Drill sergeants, take charge.
- 1 st Platoon . . . .Copy !req
38. Well, this is quite a surprise.Copy !req
39. Not particularly. It so happens
I rather expected it.Copy !req
40. Well, I can't see how you people
can pass up $80,000 for the cause.Copy !req
41. For whose cause?Copy !req
42. If you're so interested in serving
a cause, why don't you join the Army?Copy !req
43. - I'm 4-F.
- You look 1-A to me.Copy !req
44. You don't look so bad yourself.Copy !req
45. Well, it's my arteries.Copy !req
46. Should you be giving blood?Copy !req
47. I think it's clearing up.Copy !req
48. Think it's clearing up?Copy !req
49. Nope.Copy !req
50. I think it's clearing up.Copy !req
51. - How are your men?
- They'll be fine.Copy !req
52. Five o'clock in New York.
Four o'clock in Chicago.Copy !req
53. - Happy hour, huh?
- Yeah, happy hour.Copy !req
54. A couple of drinks. Maybe
an early dinner before the theater.Copy !req
55. Civilized place for civilized men.Copy !req
56. Should have been born earlier, Nix.Copy !req
57. What, and give up all this?Copy !req
58. We'll go to Chicago.
I'll take you there.Copy !req
59. Yeah.Copy !req
60. We'll see.Copy !req
61. - Actually, you know who's from there?
- Who? Oh, him.Copy !req

and here we are.Copy !req
63. You people are at the position
of attention!Copy !req

82. . . . and I will not take you
in your condition.Copy !req
83. Thanks to these men
and their infractions, every man . . .Copy !req

311. - What's up?
- I'm hearing a lot of rumblings.Copy !req
312. Sobel? We were just
talking about that.Copy !req
313. So he gets a little jumpy
in the field.Copy !req
314. - He gets jumpy and you get killed.
- That's nice.Copy !req
315. Listen, if we discuss it,
it should be among ourselves.Copy !req
316. Absolutely.Copy !req

321. Either the Krauts will get him,
or one of us.Copy !req
322. Who? Sobel?Copy !req
323. He screwed up one maneuver.Copy !req
324. I'm always fumbling with grenades.Copy !req
325. It would be easy if one
went off by accident.Copy !req
326. They must have put him
in charge for a reason.Copy !req
327. Because the Army wouldn't
make a mistake, right, Shift?Copy !req
328. - Going my way?
- Where the train takes me.Copy !req
329. - Where's that?
- I haven't a clue.Copy !req
330. Yeah, come on. Take a guess.
Atlantic, Pacific. Atlantic?Copy !req
331. I'm not the intelligence officer.Copy !req
332. As such, I know, but if I told you,
I'd have to kill you.Copy !req
333. So don't tell me.Copy !req
334. New York City. Troop ship. England.Copy !req
335. We're invading Europe, my friend.Copy !req
336. Fortress Europa.Copy !req
337. Since when do I drink?Copy !req
338. if I thought you'd drink,
I wouldn't offer it to you.Copy !req

when you get into combat?Copy !req
340. Oh, I have every confidence
in my scrounging abilities.Copy !req
341. And I have a case of Vat 69
hidden in your footlocker.Copy !req
342. - Really?
- Oh, yeah.Copy !req
343. Morning.Copy !req
344. This could turn into a real nice trip.Copy !req
345. Dear Sir or Madam:Copy !req
346. Soon your son will drop from the sky
to engage and defeat the enemy.Copy !req
347. Your letters of love and encouragement
will arm him with a fighting heart.Copy !req
348. With that, he cannot fail but will win
glory for himself, make you proud...Copy !req
349. and his country grateful
for his service in its hour of need.Copy !req
350. Signed Herbert M. Sobel,
Captain, Commanding.Copy !req
351. Right now, some lucky bastard's
headed for the South Pacific.Copy !req
352. He'll get billeted
on some tropical island.Copy !req
353. Sitting under a tree
with naked native girls . . .Copy !req
354. . . . helping him cut up coconuts
so he can hand-feed the flamingos.Copy !req
355. - Flamingos are mean. They bite.
- So do the naked native girls.Copy !req
356. With any luck.Copy !req
357. Guys, I'm glad I'm going to Europe.Copy !req
358. Hitler gets this
across the windpipe.Copy !req
359. Roosevelt changes Thanksgiving
to Joe Toye Day . . .Copy !req
360. . . . and pays me $ 10,000 a year
for the rest of my life.Copy !req
361. What if they send us to North Africa?Copy !req
362. - My brother's there. He says it's hot.
- It's hot in Africa?Copy !req
363. Shut up.
Point is, it don't matter where we go.Copy !req
364. Once we get into combat, you trust
only yourself and the man next to you.Copy !req
365. - Long as he's a paratrooper.
- Yeah?Copy !req
366. What if that paratrooper
turns out to be Sobel?Copy !req
367. if I'm next to Sobel,
I'm moving down the line.Copy !req
368. Hook up with another officer,
like Heyliger or Winters.Copy !req
369. I like Winters. But when bullets fly,
I don't want a Quaker fighting for me.Copy !req
370. - How do you know that?
- He ain't Catholic.Copy !req
371. - Neither's Sobel.
- That prick's a son of Abraham.Copy !req
372. - He's what?
- He's a Jew.Copy !req
373. Fuck.Copy !req
374. - I'm a Jew.
- Congratulations.Copy !req
375. Get your nose out of my face.Copy !req
376. What's all that about?Copy !req
377. Gonorrhea called Sobel a Jew.Copy !req
378. Liebgott took offense
because he's a Jew too.Copy !req
379. Fighting over Sobel. That's smart.Copy !req
380. Attack!Copy !req
381. No! You wanna kill him!Copy !req
382. Parry right! Parry left!
Front!Copy !req
383. Recover.Copy !req
384. Okay.Copy !req
385. We talked about magnetic declination
and the left-add, right-subtract rule.Copy !req
386. Today we'll use it.Copy !req
387. There are two basic
fighting positions.Copy !req
388. The first is a prepared position.Copy !req
389. This position's advantages are that
it gives you cover and concealment.Copy !req
390. Commence fire!Copy !req
391. We'll maneuver through these trees.Copy !req
392. At the same time, our 2nd Platoon,
in this case, moves over here.Copy !req
393. He'll then kill or capture
that German.Copy !req
394. Sobel's late.Copy !req
395. Why is there a fence here?Copy !req
396. There should be no fence here.
Tipper!Copy !req
397. Give me the map.Copy !req
398. Perconte. Luz.
Get the men. Get them ba—Copy !req
399. - Take cover behind those trees.
- All right. Let's go. Move it out.Copy !req
400. There should—
There should be no fence.Copy !req
401. We could go over it, sir.Copy !req
402. Really? That's not the point.
Where the goddamn—?Copy !req
403. Where the goddamn hell are we?Copy !req
404. - Perconte.
- Yeah?Copy !req
405. - Sobel's lost again, right?
- Yeah.Copy !req
406. - Fucking Christ.
- Hey, Luz?Copy !req
407. Can you do Major Horton?Copy !req
408. Does a wild bear crap
in the woods, son?Copy !req
409. Maybe the major can goose
this schmuck. Get us moving?Copy !req
410. - No way. I'm not gonna—
- Oh, yes.Copy !req
411. Luz, you gotta. Come on.Copy !req
412. All right, just this once.Copy !req
413. 356833.
isn't that the intersection?Copy !req
414. No, sir, it's here.
You're a full grid off.Copy !req
415. Goddamn it.Copy !req
416. - ls there a problem, Captain Sobel?
- Who said that? Who broke silence?Copy !req
417. I think it's Major Horton, sir.Copy !req
418. Major Horton? What, is he—?
Did he join us?Copy !req
419. Maybe he's moving
between the platoons.Copy !req
420. What is the goddamn holdup,
Mr. Sobel?Copy !req
421. A fence, sir, a—
God!Copy !req
422. - A barbed-wire fence.
- Oh, that dog just ain't gonna hunt.Copy !req
423. Shut up!Copy !req
424. Now, you cut that fence and get this
goddamn platoon on the move!Copy !req
425. Yes, sir!Copy !req
426. - Where are my wire cutters?
- Sir.Copy !req
427. - We have to move.
- Without Sobel and 1 st Platoon?Copy !req
428. It's a T-intersection. We improvise.Copy !req
429. Lay down fire to cut the road
in all directions.Copy !req
430. Go right with 1 st Squad. Tell 2nd
to go left. I'll be center with 3rd.Copy !req
431. - Go.
- Yes, sir.Copy !req
432. Dearie me.Copy !req
433. Bloody hell.Copy !req
434. You've done it now, Yanks.
You've captured me.Copy !req
435. Hi-yo, Silver!Copy !req
436. Would that be the enemy?Copy !req
437. As a matter of fact, yes.Copy !req
438. Good work, 2nd Platoon.
We took the objective.Copy !req
439. Who was the idiot
who cut that man's fence?Copy !req
440. - I was ordered to.
- By who?Copy !req
441. - Maj. Horton, sir.
- Maj. Horton?Copy !req
442. - Yes.
- He told you to do that?Copy !req
443. - Yes, sir.
- He ordered you to cut the fence?Copy !req
444. Yes, he did.Copy !req
445. Major Horton is on leave in London.Copy !req
446. Get those cows out of here.Copy !req
447. Lt. Winters.Copy !req
448. With Capt. Sobel's compliments, sir.Copy !req
449. Lieutenant.Copy !req
450. - Oh, for crying out loud.
- Misspelled "court-martial. "Copy !req
451. No, sir, I do not understand.Copy !req
452. Your orders were to inspect
latrines at 1000 hours.Copy !req
453. From 0930 to 0955, I was censoring
mail by order of Col. Strayer.Copy !req
454. At 1000 hours, I followed your orders.Copy !req
455. I changed that time to 0945.Copy !req
456. - No one told me.
- I telephoned.Copy !req
457. The family I'm with has no phone.Copy !req
458. - And sent a runner.
- No runner found me.Copy !req
459. When given a task to perform
by a ranking officer . . .Copy !req
460. . . .you should have delegated
latrine inspection to another officer.Copy !req
461. You failed to do so.Copy !req
462. Were I to let this go unpunished, what
kind of message is that to the men?Copy !req
463. - I performed my duty as I was ordered.
- And I disagree.Copy !req
464. So your options are
quite simple, lieutenant.Copy !req
465. Punishment will be denial
of a 48-hour pass for 60 days.Copy !req
466. Stand before me at attention.Copy !req
467. Or you may initiate an appeal
and request a trial by court-martial.Copy !req
468. You spend weekends on the base anyway.
Be a man. Take the punishment.Copy !req
469. May I borrow your pen, sir?Copy !req
470. My endorsement, sir.Copy !req
471. I request trial by court-martial.Copy !req
472. - We lost Winters to the mess.
- You're joking.Copy !req
473. Strayer did it while he figures out
the procedures for his court-martial.Copy !req
474. - Nixon better get him out.
- And if he don't?Copy !req
475. Winters scrambles eggs while
we make the big jump with Sobel.Copy !req
476. Not me.Copy !req
477. - We're going through with this, right?
- We gotta do something.Copy !req
478. - Yeah.
- Yeah.Copy !req
479. All right.Copy !req
480. Good.Copy !req
481. - Let's be clear of the consequences.
- I don't care about the consequences.Copy !req
482. We could be lined up
against a wall and shot.Copy !req
483. Now, I'm ready to face that.Copy !req
484. And every one of us had better be too.Copy !req
485. I will not follow that man
into combat.Copy !req
486. Me neither.Copy !req
487. All right.Copy !req
488. Then let's do it.Copy !req
489. "l hereby . . .Copy !req
490. . . .no longer . . .Copy !req
491. . . . wish to serve . . .Copy !req
492. . . .as a non-commissioned officer . . .Copy !req
493. . . .in Easy Company. "Copy !req
494. All right, boys. Good luck.Copy !req
495. I ought to have you all shot!Copy !req
496. This is an act of mutiny while
we prepare for the invasion of Europe.Copy !req
497. - Sgt. Harris?
- Sir.Copy !req
498. Turn in your stripes.Copy !req
499. You are transferred
out of my regiment.Copy !req
500. - Sir.
- Get out.Copy !req
501. - Sgt. Ranney?
- Sir.Copy !req
502. You're lucky I'm only
busting you to private.Copy !req
503. All of you NCOs have disgraced
the 101 st Airborne.Copy !req
504. You're lucky we're on the eve of
the largest action in war history . . .Copy !req
505. . . . which leaves me no choice
but to spare your lives.Copy !req
506. Now, get out of my office
and out of my sight.Copy !req
507. Get.Copy !req
508. Keep them coming. Thattaboy.
That's it.Copy !req
509. I can only speculate.
Most men would never do this.Copy !req
510. But I believe just a few
of the sergeants may have felt . . .Copy !req
511. . . . their loyalty lay more
to the platoon than to the company.Copy !req
512. And these few convinced the other
NCOs to turn in their stripes?Copy !req
513. As staff sergeants,
they have a great influence.Copy !req
514. But the rest are good men.
I can work with them.Copy !req
515. Winters' court-martial has been
an unpleasant distraction.Copy !req
516. lndeed it has, sir.Copy !req
517. However, your command of Easy
Company has been exemplary.Copy !req
518. Thank you, sir.Copy !req
519. In fact, except for the actions
of a few of your non-come . . .Copy !req
520. . . .you fielded one of the finest
companies of soldiers I've seen.Copy !req
521. Yes, sir.Copy !req
522. Division has established a parachute
training school at Chilton Foliat.Copy !req
523. The idea is for non-infantry types . . .Copy !req
524. . . . vital to the invasion,
such as doctors and chaplains . . .Copy !req
525. . . .to take jump training there.Copy !req
526. I can't think of anyone more qualified
to command such a school than you.Copy !req
527. Sir?Copy !req
528. I'm reassigning you to Chilton Foliat.Copy !req
529. I'm losing Easy Company?Copy !req
530. The war effort needs you elsewhere.Copy !req
531. - Permission to speak, sir.
- Granted.Copy !req
532. ls—? Who will be replacing me?Copy !req
533. Lt. Meehan from Baker Company
is senior.Copy !req
534. Good luck at Chilton Foliat, Herbert.
Don't let us down, now.Copy !req
535. No, sir.Copy !req
536. Carry on.Copy !req
537. 2nd Platoon, listen up. I want
the 1 st Squad in A-side tents there.Copy !req
538. 3rd Squad, second row . . . .Copy !req
539. Holy shit!Copy !req
540. No, it's all right.
We're Tommies, not Boche.Copy !req
541. - ls all this real?
- Yeah, yeah.Copy !req
542. It's for you lads, so you can get your
mince pies on some Jerry clobber.Copy !req
543. - if you know what I mean.
- Not really.Copy !req
544. You got a Luger?Copy !req
545. - I'm dying to hold a real Luger.
- Yeah, go on, then.Copy !req
546. Quick butchers, yeah?Copy !req
547. - She's a doozy.
- That's pukka, isn't it?Copy !req
548. - What?
- Eh?Copy !req
549. Hey, Petty!Copy !req
550. Hey, mate?Copy !req
551. You're having a bath if you think
you're half-inching that.Copy !req
552. Oh, yeah. Sorry. Well, good luck.Copy !req
553. You too, mate.Copy !req
554. What's up, Hoobs?Copy !req
555. These men have been through
the Army's toughest training.Copy !req
556. Under the worst circumstances.
And they volunteered for it.Copy !req
557. I was just shooting craps with them—Copy !req
558. You know why they volunteered?Copy !req
559. So when things got bad, the man
next to them would be the best.Copy !req
560. - Not a draftee who'll get them killed.
- Are you mad because they like me?Copy !req
561. Because I'm getting
to know my soldiers?Copy !req
562. You've been with these guys two years?
I've been here for six days.Copy !req
563. - You were gambling.
- So? Soldiers do that.Copy !req
564. - I don't deserve a reprimand for it.
- What if you'd won?Copy !req
565. - What?
- What if you'd won?Copy !req
566. Never put yourself in a position
where you can take from these men.Copy !req
567. - Lt. Meehan?
- Enter.Copy !req
568. On the last training jump . . . .
I had a compass.Copy !req
569. Close the flap.Copy !req
570. - Then we turned left.
- Yeah.Copy !req
571. Bearing 0-4-2, 12 minutes.Copy !req
572. - Then another left.
- Yes.Copy !req
573. Call it 3-5-8.Copy !req
574. For 1 0 1 /2 minutes.Copy !req
575. - Green light, right over Ramsbury.
- Ramsbury.Copy !req
576. Every single time.Copy !req
577. Linear distance on the grid
of about . . . .Copy !req
578. Okay. Ramsbury.Copy !req
579. Upottery.Copy !req
580. So . . . .Copy !req
581. It's Normandy.Copy !req
582. Sainte-Marie-du-Mont.
Causeway number one.Copy !req
583. Causeway number two.
The ultimate field problem.Copy !req
584. The Douve River estuary divides two
beachheads, code name Utah, here . . .Copy !req
585. . . . and Omaha, here.Copy !req
586. Seaborne lnfantry will hit these
beaches at a specified date and time.Copy !req
587. H-Hour, D-Day.Copy !req
588. Airborne's objective is to take
the town of Carentan . . .Copy !req
589. . . . linking Utah and Omaha
into a continuous beachhead.Copy !req
590. —linking Omaha and Utah
into one continuous beachhead.Copy !req
591. Each trooper will learn this operation
and know his mission to the detail.Copy !req
592. - Lt. Meehan?
- Yes, Dukeman.Copy !req
593. - Are we dropping tonight?
- We'll let you know.Copy !req
594. In the meantime, study these
sand tables, maps and recon photos . . .Copy !req
595. . . . until you can draw a map by memory.Copy !req
596. We'll drop behind
this Atlantic Wall . . .Copy !req
597. . . . five hours before the 4th lnfantry
lands at Utah.Copy !req
598. Between our assembly area and the
objective, there is a German garrison.Copy !req
599. In this area, Sainte-Marie-du-Mont.Copy !req
600. Easy Company
will destroy that garrison.Copy !req
601. Three-day supply of K rations,
chocolate bars, powdered coffee . . .Copy !req
602. . . . sugar, matches, compass,
bayonet, ammunition . . .Copy !req
603. . . . gas mask, musette bag with ammo,
my webbing, my.45, canteen . . .Copy !req
604. . . . cartons of smokes, Hawkins mine,
smoke grenade, Gammon grenade . . .Copy !req
605. . . . TNT, this bullshit
and a pair of nasty skivvies.Copy !req
606. Your point?Copy !req
607. This weighs as much as I do. I still
got my chute, my Mae West and M-1.Copy !req
608. - Where are your brass knuckles?
- I could use some.Copy !req
609. - Sgt. Martin!
- Vest, anything for me?Copy !req
610. Nope. Sgt. Martin!Copy !req
611. Talbert!Copy !req
612. Floyd. Floyd M.
Here.Copy !req
613. - Heavy. Condoms?
- I don't know, probably.Copy !req
614. - What you got?
- "Dear Floyd: Give them hell. "Copy !req
615. It's from chief of the Kokomo
Police Department.Copy !req
616. You gotta love cops.Copy !req
617. All right, listen up! Listen up!Copy !req
618. if you did not sign your
Gl life insurance policy . . .Copy !req
619. . . .you go on and see Sgt. Evans
at the Headquarters Company tent.Copy !req
620. You boys don't let your families
miss out on $ 10,000.Copy !req
621. - You hear, Gerry?
- Lip!Copy !req
622. Yeah, boy?Copy !req
623. - Has Guarnere mentioned his brother?
- No.Copy !req
624. I got a problem.Copy !req
625. My wife keeps up with things at home.
Casualty lists and like that.Copy !req
626. - Guarnere's brother in ltaly . . . .
- Henry?Copy !req
627. Killed in Monte Cassino.Copy !req
628. - Well, I'm sure he doesn't know.
- Damn. What do you think I should do?Copy !req
629. - if it were me? I'd tell him.
- A couple hours before we jump?Copy !req
630. I don't know.Copy !req
631. Why are they springing these
on us now?Copy !req
632. It's just 80 extra pounds
strapped to your leg.Copy !req
633. Does anybody have any idea
how this thing works?Copy !req
634. Colonel Sink.Copy !req
635. Colonel Sink.Copy !req
636. "Soldiers of the regiment:Copy !req
637. Tonight is the night . . .Copy !req
638. . . . of nights.Copy !req
639. As you read this, you are en route
to the adventure . . .Copy !req
640. . . . for which you have trained
for over two years. "Copy !req
641. That's why they gave us ice cream.Copy !req
642. Easy Company! Listen up!Copy !req
643. Channel coast is socked in
with rain and fog.Copy !req
644. No jump tonight.Copy !req
645. The invasion has been postponed.
We're on a 24-hour stand-down.Copy !req
646. "Dearest Johnny"?Copy !req
647. I got the wrong goddamn jacket.Copy !req
648. "Bill Guarnere's brother . . . . "Copy !req
649. - Good luck, lads.
- See you, Tommy.Copy !req
650. Give Jerry one for me.Copy !req
651. Johnny.Copy !req
652. You might be looking for this.Copy !req
653. I took your jacket by mistake.
I'm sorry.Copy !req
654. You read it?Copy !req
655. - Where the fuck is Monte Cassino?
- I don't know. Ltaly somewhere.Copy !req
656. Sorry about your brother, Bill.Copy !req
657. I'm sorry for my ma.Copy !req
658. He was . . . .Copy !req
659. Let's get this over with.Copy !req
660. Bill?Copy !req
661. I'll meet up with you over there.Copy !req
662. Doc Roe is giving these out
for airsickness.Copy !req
663. Orders are, every man takes one now.
Another, 30 minutes in the air.Copy !req
664. Lieutenant.Copy !req
665. 2nd Platoon, listen up.Copy !req
666. Good luck.Copy !req
667. God bless you.Copy !req
668. I'll see you in the assembly area.Copy !req
669. if the wire cuts are successful,
all we should have to deal with is . . . .Copy !req
670. - Goddamn, Lieb.
- That airsick pill is making me loopy.Copy !req
