17. From the very first moment

18. that Jim Olsen set foot on Moose Island,

19. off the coast of Maine

20. to spend his vacation

21. with his Aunt Louisa Horne and his cousin Chris,

22. he had a feeling that something was wrong.

23. Aunt Louisa's house was the only one on the island,

24. a gray, weather-beaten cottage

25. with the sea almost at the front door.

26. Aunt Louisa herself seemed very nice.

27. Jim hadn't seen her since he was a baby,

28. couldn't even recall what she looked like.

29. But underneath her pleasantness,

30. Jim sensed a feeling of strain, of anxiety.

31. His cousin Chris, whom he'd never met before either,

32. baffled Jim completely.

33. He seemed deliberately unfriendly.

34. Aunt Louisa's house was spotlessly clean,

35. kept that way by Alice, the pretty housemaid.

36. But when he was introduced to Alice

37. and Jim realized the poor girl was deaf and dumb,

38. his heart sank.

39. He felt immediately sympathetic toward her.

40. And besides, it left only his Aunt Louisa with whom to talk.

41. Because, as far as he knew,

42. Chris, Alice and his aunt

43. were the only human occupants of Moose Island.

44. Jim's uncle had been dead for 20 years,

45. but Aunt Louisa had kept his room

46. just as though he were still alive.

47. When Jim heard

48. that it was going to be

49. his room during his stay,

50. his spirits revived

51. and he determined to make the most of his first vacation

52. on an island off the coast of Maine.

53. Actually, Moose Island was a wild and exciting place.

54. There was the old lighthouse that had been deserted

55. ever since Jim's uncle, Captain Horne,

56. had drowned in a storm some 20 years before.

57. There were huge rocks and cliffs

58. with tremendous seas breaking over them...

59. and massive boulders rising from the shore

60. like grim sentinels.

61. Jim was exploring this shore

62. the first afternoon of his arrival

63. when he heard the horrible sound for the first time.
