1. Oh, shit here we go!
Here we go!
Copy !req
2. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
3. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
4. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
5. Oh, man!
Copy !req
6. Oh, my God.
Copy !req
7. We have the
second tower, right
now, the second tower.
Copy !req
8. But listen,
can you feel it?
Copy !req
9. I can feel it.
I can hear it.
Copy !req
10. Oh, my God! Christ!
Copy !req
11. Oh, it's going!
Copy !req
12. Oh, my God!
Son of a bitch.
Copy !req
13. Second tower is down!
Second tower's down.
Copy !req
14. I knew it, man.
Copy !req
15. On September 11th,
Copy !req
16. I woke up late.
Copy !req
17. I had completely
slept through Monday.
Copy !req
18. I was living on the
west side of Manhattan and...
Copy !req
19. I was having a hard time,
you know?
Copy !req
20. I was drinking, I was
acting out in different ways,
Copy !req
21. very depressed, sleeping.
Copy !req
22. New York City's not a very
easy place to, to be, like,
Copy !req
23. on your own, trying
to find a place or even
trying to find yourself,
Copy !req
24. because it's a—it's a
very busy, impersonal city.
Copy !req
25. Then I turned on the TV, okay.
Copy !req
26. And then I saw that
what had happened;
Copy !req
27. that the— that the planes
had hit the towers.
Copy !req
28. And to tell you the truth,
Copy !req
29. I wasn't really connected
to the city, right?
Copy !req
30. I wasn't really
connected to anything.
Copy !req
31. And it really didn't, um...
Copy !req
32. I really didn't fully
grasp what I was even
looking at on the TV.
Copy !req
33. I didn't have any
thoughts about it, okay?
Copy !req
34. Um...
Copy !req
35. But, I listened
to my voicemail.
Copy !req
36. So, my estranged sister,
her name is Joy, and, uh,
Copy !req
37. she had left a message
on my, on my voicemail.
Copy !req
38. And the message said,
Copy !req
39. "I hope you're okay,
Copy !req
40. you're probably
down there helping."
Copy !req
41. I thought to myself,
Copy !req
42. "She thinks
I'm down there helping.
Copy !req
43. Why would she think that?"
Copy !req
44. Nothing was
further from my mind
Copy !req
45. than to
be down there helping.
Copy !req
46. Why would I be
down there helping?
Copy !req
47. I'm an ex-paramedic,
Copy !req
48. trying to recover from
drugs and alcohol, okay?
Copy !req
49. And she thinks I'm down
there helping, you know?
Copy !req
50. And at that point, I was like,
Copy !req
51. "Well, I don't
wanna let her down."
Copy !req
52. You know what I mean?
Copy !req
53. "Maybe I should go
down there and help."
Copy !req
54. My intention was not
to put myself
Copy !req
55. in any
kind of harm's way, okay?
Copy !req
56. I thought maybe I
would go to a triage area,
Copy !req
57. help bandage people, help, uh,
Copy !req
58. you know, give them water.
Copy !req
59. Things of that nature.
Copy !req
60. I just wanted to be
able to call my sister,
Copy !req
61. my estranged sister, and say,
Copy !req
62. "Hey, guess what?
I'm down here helping."
Copy !req
63. That was it.
That was my whole motivation.
Copy !req
64. I knew that I should,
I better respond.
Copy !req
65. I'd just got out of the
Marine Corps, early August.
Copy !req
66. Served eight years.
Copy !req
67. I felt compelled.
Copy !req
68. I felt that it was
my duty to respond.
Copy !req
69. I had all this training.
Copy !req
70. I remember having
my military uniform
in the trunk of my car.
Copy !req
71. I had just moved
into this home,
Copy !req
72. and all the— all my
military gear, I said,
Copy !req
73. "I'm gonna, I'll leave
inside the trunk of my car."
Copy !req
74. I remember just grabbing,
running to my car,
Copy !req
75. grabbing my uniform out,
and then heading straight
Copy !req
76. to the crash site.
Copy !req
77. I remember just continuing
towards the Trade Center,
Copy !req
78. and, uh, I had linked up
with some firefighters
Copy !req
79. and we were searching
the rubble.
Copy !req
80. We're digging through this pile,
Copy !req
81. trying to find people,
and we're getting a signal from
Copy !req
82. Seven World Trade Center,
Copy !req
83. that that building is
completely engulfed in flames.
Copy !req
84. And they felt that this was
going to collapse
Copy !req
85. while we're digging.
Copy !req
86. So, we're on the pile
and they blow a horn,
Copy !req
87. "Everybody off the pile."
Copy !req
88. Now we start scrambling
and we get off the pile.
Copy !req
89. And we look back
at the building,
Copy !req
90. they give the all clear,
we go back to the pile.
Copy !req
91. We're digging, we're digging;
a half an hour later,
Copy !req
92. they blow the horn,
"Everybody off the pile!"
Copy !req
93. We have not yet heard.
Copy !req
94. Building number seven on fire
and in danger of collapse
Copy !req
95. at the World Trade Center.
Copy !req
96. The two towers
are virtually gone.
Copy !req
97. Nothing but rubble, basically.
Copy !req
98. But building
number seven on fire,
Copy !req
99. so the troubles are far
from over at that complex...
Copy !req
100. Now,
eight hours after the first
of the planes hit, uh...
Copy !req
101. And all we know
is we gotta find people
Copy !req
102. and time is of the
utmost importance.
Copy !req
103. We need to find
these people fast.
Copy !req
104. We're
all sitting there watching,
Copy !req
105. and this building collapses.
Copy !req
106. Right down onto the pile.
Copy !req
107. There were firefighters,
Copy !req
108. that knew that they had loved
ones that were down there.
Copy !req
109. And I could see
the sense of urgency to
be able to find that person;
Copy !req
110. to be able to
find their brother;
Copy !req
111. to be able to find their son
or their father or their wife.
Copy !req
112. They still didn't give
up on looking for them.
Copy !req
113. Through there.
Copy !req
114. I was standing across
the street
Copy !req
115. from the World Trade Center.
Copy !req
116. Everyone, you know, was trying
to formulate a plan on how to
Copy !req
117. go about conducting
a search and rescue.
Copy !req
118. And I just knew that...
we have to act.
Copy !req
119. You know, I can only
imagine being trapped
Copy !req
120. and not being able
to help myself, um,
Copy !req
121. and no one is
coming to rescue me.
Copy !req
122. I ran into another Marine.
Copy !req
123. He had his uniform on as well
and he introduced himself.
Copy !req
124. And I knew at that
time that, that he was
going to be, you know,
Copy !req
125. that he was going to
see this through with me.
Copy !req
126. We started crawling
across the debris.
Copy !req
127. And it was so hot.
Copy !req
128. My boots would sink into
the rebar because it was hot.
Copy !req
129. And I remember turning around
and looking up and seeing that
Copy !req
130. this firefighter,
Copy !req
131. and he's yelling at us,
telling us to,
Copy !req
132. "Come back! Come back!
Get off the—the,
get off the pile of rubble."
Copy !req
133. And I remember yelling
back at him, saying,
Copy !req
134. "We're Marines.
We do not go backwards,
Copy !req
135. we go forward."
Copy !req
136. I knew that we
continue to move forward,
Copy !req
137. digging and searching,
Copy !req
138. we'll find someone.
Copy !req
139. Think of, you know,
the worst nightmare you have
Copy !req
140. and multiply it by a million.
Copy !req
141. And we found ourselves
literally buried alive.
Copy !req
142. And it was black.
Copy !req
143. I mean, I found
myself in a black cavern,
Copy !req
144. if you will, and, uh,
I couldn't see.
Copy !req
145. Then all of a sudden,
about 30 feet up above me,
Copy !req
146. there was a hole and
light started coming through
this little hole.
Copy !req
147. And it was a very
dust-filled environment,
Copy !req
148. and when I could finally see,
I remember looking at myself
Copy !req
149. and just seeing this wall
of concrete on top of me.
Copy !req
150. You know, at that point,
Copy !req
151. the pain really started,
uh, taking over on me.
Copy !req
152. I was just in a lot of pain.
Copy !req
153. My fellow officer, Dominick,
Copy !req
154. was buried to my
left, uh, in the debris,
Copy !req
155. and our team leader,
Sergeant McLoughlin,
Copy !req
156. he was about 15 feet
beyond my feet.
Copy !req
157. And Sergeant McLoughlin being
the professional he is said,
Copy !req
158. "Alright, what's
everybody's condition?"
Copy !req
159. I said,
"I can't move. I'm stuck.
Copy !req
160. I'm actually being crushed."
Copy !req
161. Dominick said,
"I think I can get outta here."
Copy !req
162. And there wasn't
much room, I mean,
Copy !req
163. there was
concrete right above me;
Copy !req
164. there wasn't
too much room, um.
Copy !req
165. But he was able to shimmy out
and literally crawled over
Copy !req
166. my face into this very
small space to my right.
Copy !req
167. And at that point, he started
to attempt to try to get me
Copy !req
168. out of what this concrete
cocoon looked like, really.
Copy !req
169. He had been working
on me for, I'd say,
Copy !req
170. about ten, maybe 20 minutes,
uh, trying to get me out,
Copy !req
171. and that's when we
heard a humongous boom.
Copy !req
172. An earthquake-type of
event where everything's
shaking around me.
Copy !req
173. Debris just kept
coming down on us, um.
Copy !req
174. I kept getting hit.
Copy !req
175. I remember thinking to myself,
"I'm not gonna make it."
Copy !req
176. And something I've always
done to my wife, Alison,
Copy !req
177. and my little girl, Bianca,
Copy !req
178. was always say
the "I love you" sign
in sign language.
Copy !req
179. "I love you."
Copy !req
180. And all I could
do is take my hands,
Copy !req
181. make the "I love you" signs
and cross 'em over my chest,
Copy !req
182. because I figured
I was gonna die,
Copy !req
183. and if they found me,
they could tell Alison,
Copy !req
184. "This is the
way we found him."
Copy !req
185. And she would know that in
my last moments on this Earth,
Copy !req
186. I was thinking of them.
Copy !req
187. And that's when
I kinda glanced over
Copy !req
188. and I saw something come
through the hole above us,
Copy !req
189. and hit Dominick really,
really hard.
Copy !req
190. But then it stopped.
Copy !req
191. And when everything
cleared up again,
Copy !req
192. at this point I could hear
Sergeant McLoughlin yelling,
Copy !req
193. I was yelling more.
Copy !req
194. But then I looked over
and I could see Dominick,
Copy !req
195. and Dominick was now bleeding
outta his mouth, pretty bad.
Copy !req
196. And Dominick said,
"Willie, I'm hurt bad."
Copy !req
197. I said, "Hold on."
Copy !req
198. You know, I kept trying to
give him encouraging words.
Copy !req
199. We talked a little bit
more and he actually said,
Copy !req
200. "Sarge, can I
get a three-eight?"
Copy !req
201. Which means a break.
Copy !req
202. He cracks a joke
in the middle of this.
Copy !req
203. And Sergeant McLoughlin
stopped yelling and said,
Copy !req
204. "Yeah, you can
have a three-eight."
Copy !req
205. And I said, "Dom, hold on."
Copy !req
206. And he goes,
"Willie, I'm dying."
Copy !req
207. And he goes,
"Just don't forget that I died
trying to save you guys."
Copy !req
208. And I said, "Dominick,
I will never let
anybody forget this."
Copy !req
209. You know, at that point,
he took his side arm out,
Copy !req
210. he pointed it up into that
hole that I told you where
the light was coming in,
Copy !req
211. he fired one round
in a last-ditch effort
Copy !req
212. to let somebody
know we were down there.
Copy !req
213. And then he passed,
right in front of my eyes.
Copy !req
214. Finally.
Copy !req
215. Finally.
Copy !req
216. Alright, you guys,
get back.
Copy !req
217. Everybody was just waiting.
Copy !req
218. And now it's
getting pretty dark.
Copy !req
219. There was nobody searching
the rubble because they—
Copy !req
220. they deemed it too
dangerous to search.
Copy !req
221. And then I was, I was right
at the edge of the rubble,
Copy !req
222. and I saw— I saw
looking up the rubble,
Copy !req
223. that there was a
few people searching.
Copy !req
224. But you could look down into
the cracks in the rubble
Copy !req
225. and you see the fire coming up.
Copy !req
226. I'm extremely scared of fire.
Copy !req
227. I'm extremely scared of smoke.
Copy !req
228. I'm extremely scared
of heights. Okay?
Copy !req
229. I have no plans to crawl
in any rubble to try to
Copy !req
230. rescue any person, right?
Copy !req
231. My plans were...
Copy !req
232. to be able
to call my sister Joy...
Copy !req
233. Okay? And tell her that
I'm down there helping.
Copy !req
234. And I remember taking
the first step onto the rubble.
Copy !req
235. I don't remember why I did it.
Okay?
Copy !req
236. I just remember
taking that step.
Copy !req
237. Hello!
Copy !req
238. We were searching for hours.
Copy !req
239. Every area that we get to
we would yell down inside,
Copy !req
240. "Is there anyone down there?
Copy !req
241. This is the, this is
the United States Marines."
Copy !req
242. And we would listen for voices
Copy !req
243. and we would get nothing.
Copy !req
244. As I'm looking around,
Copy !req
245. it felt like we were
not going to find anyone.
Copy !req
246. As we get about
three quarters of the way,
Copy !req
247. the way across the debris,
Copy !req
248. I see this hole to the right,
and I yelled into this hole,
Copy !req
249. "This is the
United States Marines.
Copy !req
250. Is there anyone down there?"
Copy !req
251. And I heard a voice.
Copy !req
252. I was physically,
mentally exhausted.
Copy !req
253. So tired I wanted to die.
Copy !req
254. And then I heard
voices in the distance.
Copy !req
255. And what I heard was,
"United States Marine Corps.
Copy !req
256. Can anybody hear us?"
Copy !req
257. And I started yelling
at the top of my lungs.
Copy !req
258. It was faint,
but I heard this voice.
Copy !req
259. But we were searching
all day and for hours,
Copy !req
260. and here it is.
Copy !req
261. I'm saying is that wishful,
is that just wishful thinking?
Copy !req
262. And it was
almost like a dream to me.
Copy !req
263. I, I actually asked myself,
Copy !req
264. "Am I hallucinating?
Am I dreaming this?"
Copy !req
265. Uh, but they answered me.
Copy !req
266. And this
voice is panicky,
Copy !req
267. and it seems like
the voice is trembling.
Copy !req
268. And I said,
"Hey, Port Authority Police.
Copy !req
269. We got men down here.
Copy !req
270. Me and my sergeant
are hurt bad."
Copy !req
271. You know, "Don't leave us."
Copy !req
272. And they said,
"We're not gonna leave you."
Copy !req
273. And I was like, "Thank God."
Copy !req
274. But he was buried,
buried beneath the, the earth.
Copy !req
275. He wasn't easy to get to.
Copy !req
276. I continue to crawl
and walk over the rubble.
Copy !req
277. And then I saw
there's a Marine,
Copy !req
278. standing in a hole
in the rubble,
Copy !req
279. with smoke and fire
coming out,
Copy !req
280. with people down in that
hole who need to be rescued.
Copy !req
281. I don't know what
he was thinking,
Copy !req
282. but I was thinking, you know,
Copy !req
283. "Where are all the—
where are all the men
Copy !req
284. and where's
this rescue happening?"
Copy !req
285. You know, and he's looking
at me like,
Copy !req
286. "Hooray!
The rescuers have arrived."
Copy !req
287. He introduced
himself to me, um,
Copy !req
288. that he was a paramedic,
Copy !req
289. and I knew that that's exactly
what we needed in that hole.
Copy !req
290. He pointed,
down into the hole.
Copy !req
291. And he said,
"Look. Look at that hand."
Copy !req
292. And finally I
saw this dirty hand
popping up from the rubble,
Copy !req
293. maybe 50 feet down into
the rubble, and waving.
Copy !req
294. And I thought to myself,
Copy !req
295. I don't know what I
thought to myself, you know?
Copy !req
296. I just, maybe just...
Copy !req
297. you know, my training,
my training of, um, you know,
Copy !req
298. I guess every reason I
ever became a paramedic,
uh, uh, kicked in.
Copy !req
299. I thought to myself,
Copy !req
300. "Maybe his life's
worth more than my life."
Copy !req
301. You know, my life
wasn't going very well, um.
Copy !req
302. So, I started to crawl
down into this hole,
Copy !req
303. this fiery, smoky,
50-foot hole, into the rubble.
Copy !req
304. As we're crawling into the hole,
Copy !req
305. there's debris everywhere.
Copy !req
306. We can't get to that
voice that's in need.
Copy !req
307. I remember yelling for
this voice, asking him,
Copy !req
308. "Where are you at?"
Copy !req
309. And, um, he's yelling back,
Copy !req
310. and the hole is so hot,
and there's so much smoke,
Copy !req
311. you could—
couldn't even breathe.
Copy !req
312. I reach a point where
I come upon the man
Copy !req
313. who had stuck his hand out,
and he said his name was Will.
Copy !req
314. He obviously needs help, okay?
Copy !req
315. He's beside himself.
Copy !req
316. He's, um, he's trapped.
Copy !req
317. He's in a very bad situation.
Copy !req
318. He's in the
center of the rubble,
Copy !req
319. 50 feet down, trapped.
Copy !req
320. As they got to me,
I remember just wanting to
Copy !req
321. give myself up because
I was so exhausted.
Copy !req
322. I remember starting to
hyperventilate to the point
Copy !req
323. I thought I was gonna
give myself a heart attack.
Copy !req
324. And I remember Chuck saying,
Copy !req
325. "Hey, buddy, you
gotta hold it together.
Copy !req
326. You gotta control yourself."
Copy !req
327. And I remember
thinking to myself,
Copy !req
328. "Alright, calm yourself down."
Copy !req
329. I did calm myself down,
and they started to dig me out.
Copy !req
330. We had to
remove chunks of concrete.
Copy !req
331. I remember taking these huge
boulders and lifting them up
Copy !req
332. and, and, uh,
walking them back.
Copy !req
333. It's, once again, it
is so hot that we had to
Copy !req
334. remove ourself from the hole.
Copy !req
335. And we did that
multiple times,
Copy !req
336. we did that multiple times,
Copy !req
337. dig as hard as we
can and move debris.
Copy !req
338. And, um, and every
time we went topside,
Copy !req
339. we would yell out
for help and yell for
help and wave our hands
Copy !req
340. and do everything
we possibly can, uh,
Copy !req
341. to alert people.
Copy !req
342. And no one was around.
Copy !req
343. We were, like, smack in
the middle of the debris.
Copy !req
344. No one could hear us.
Copy !req
345. Then there was
basically a point where
Copy !req
346. the room filled
with smoke, okay?
Copy !req
347. And at the point the
room filled with smoke,
Copy !req
348. I got a little scared.
Copy !req
349. Fire was, fire was coming
through in certain places.
Copy !req
350. It was, you know,
it was obvious
Copy !req
351. that we were
in grave danger.
Copy !req
352. And everything, every, like,
every cell in my body said,
Copy !req
353. "Get out of here."
You know?
Copy !req
354. And Will was, uh,
Will was also scared,
Copy !req
355. and he's telling me
to cut his leg off.
Copy !req
356. These fireballs,
Copy !req
357. you know, started
falling into the hole.
Copy !req
358. And, um, they worked
on me for a long time,
Copy !req
359. and at one point, they
couldn't get my left leg out.
Copy !req
360. And I remember saying,
"Just cut my left leg off.
Copy !req
361. I can see the hole.
Cut my left leg off."
Copy !req
362. I don't know how
to cut somebody's leg off.
Copy !req
363. It wasn't, like, an option.
Copy !req
364. What do I do?
Copy !req
365. Do I pull myself
out of this hole?
Copy !req
366. That fire was
starting to become larger.
Copy !req
367. You knew that the hole
was about to collapse.
Copy !req
368. It just felt like it
was going to collapse.
Copy !req
369. It was just a matter of time.
Copy !req
370. I didn't know if
I was strong enough
to achieve that mission.
Copy !req
371. Will shares that
his wife is pregnant.
Copy !req
372. She's six months pregnant.
Copy !req
373. They're expecting a baby girl.
Copy !req
374. My mother raised me to...
Copy !req
375. respond when you see
someone in need.
Copy !req
376. She would always tell us,
Copy !req
377. "You are your
brother's keeper.
Copy !req
378. Never leave your
brother behind."
Copy !req
379. And for years,
she would say that.
Copy !req
380. I had promised this—
this—this Port Authority
police officer, Will Jimeno,
Copy !req
381. I had promised him, I said,
Copy !req
382. "I am going to— I promise
I'm gonna see this through."
Copy !req
383. At one point,
I remember them saying,
Copy !req
384. you know,
just saying, you know,
Copy !req
385. "We're not
leaving these guys."
Copy !req
386. You know?
Copy !req
387. "If we die, we die with them."
Copy !req
388. And, uh, that
meant a lot to me.
Copy !req
389. They all wanted
to help, you know,
Copy !req
390. and that—that meant
a great deal to me.
Copy !req
391. We had all just made that
decision that no one was
Copy !req
392. gonna leave that
hole without him.
Copy !req
393. "Nobody's leaving you.
Copy !req
394. If you die,
we're all gonna die."
Copy !req
395. I said
to myself, you know,
Copy !req
396. "How do you tell your family?
Copy !req
397. How do they know what
you were going to do,
Copy !req
398. what you were doing?"
Copy !req
399. I remember reaching
over to my pocket
Copy !req
400. and I had a—a camera,
a disposable camera,
Copy !req
401. and I took a couple
pictures of myself.
Copy !req
402. If I died, hopefully
God would allow someone
to find this camera
Copy !req
403. and hopefully it would
answer some questions.
Copy !req
404. And I took that
camera and I put it,
Copy !req
405. and it was just the
hardest thing for me to do.
Copy !req
406. And I remember taking that
camera and putting it on
Copy !req
407. a high point of the debris,
Copy !req
408. and I went back into the hole.
Copy !req
409. But before I go back down,
Copy !req
410. I see a light.
Copy !req
411. Like these
lights appeared to be either
Copy !req
412. flashlights or
head-mounted lamps,
Copy !req
413. and, um, they're every bit
of 100 to 200 yards away.
Copy !req
414. And I'm yelling for these
lights and waving my hands.
Copy !req
415. They started making their
way directly towards me.
Copy !req
416. Before you knew it,
Copy !req
417. I could hear more
people up above us.
Copy !req
418. And two NYPD ESU officers,
Scott Strauss, Paddy McGee,
Copy !req
419. put their lives on the line
and they get into this hole.
Copy !req
420. I remember them saying,
Copy !req
421. "We got the cavalry
on the way. Hold on."
Copy !req
422. Chuck's saying,
"I'll put an IV in."
Copy !req
423. And if I recall right, I think
he used duct tape or some,
Copy !req
424. some other tape
than medical tape
to put an IV into me.
Copy !req
425. It's years
and years and years
since I've started an IV,
Copy !req
426. I don't even know.
Copy !req
427. It's, like, it's been so many
years since I started an IV
Copy !req
428. that the catheters
have changed, okay?
Copy !req
429. And they are...
Copy !req
430. And I'm like,
"How do I use this catheter?"
Copy !req
431. Started the IV right away.
Copy !req
432. It was, it was one stick,
it was like a perfect IV.
Copy !req
433. But his legs were trapped.
Copy !req
434. And they called
down for a Hurst tool.
Copy !req
435. A Hurst tool is what
they'll use in a car accident
Copy !req
436. to pry a door open,
Copy !req
437. where it's like, has this—
the jaws of life.
Copy !req
438. At a certain point,
it just caught right.
Copy !req
439. It just caught, you know,
it just caught perfectly.
Copy !req
440. And, um, it released his legs.
Copy !req
441. And his leg was released.
Copy !req
442. They put me, finally,
on a Stokes basket,
Copy !req
443. and they started
bringing me up.
Copy !req
444. And at that point, they
started passing me down this
Copy !req
445. long line of rescue workers
from all over;
Copy !req
446. from New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut.
Copy !req
447. You know, I remember
just grabbing patches
and thanking people.
Copy !req
448. I didn't know anybody
till I hit one person.
Copy !req
449. There was one person
that grabbed me
Copy !req
450. and was actually looking
down at me and
Copy !req
451. I was looking up at him.
Copy !req
452. It was some classmate of mine.
Copy !req
453. But I heard him say,
"Jimeno?"
Copy !req
454. And his nickname in
the academy was 'Devil Dog.'
Copy !req
455. So, right away I knew
who it was, and I'm like,
Copy !req
456. "Devil Dog?"
He's like, "Yeah, it's Grant."
Copy !req
457. And I remember.
Copy !req
458. I don't mean
to get choked up,
Copy !req
459. but I remember
just that I said,
Copy !req
460. "Devil Dog," and he said,
"Yeah, Jimeno, it's me."
Copy !req
461. I felt like it's
somebody I know,
Copy !req
462. and, uh, that
meant a lot to me.
Copy !req
463. Just him saying,
"Hold on, buddy,
Copy !req
464. you're gonna make it out."
Copy !req
465. But then I looked up
and I didn't see the buildings.
Copy !req
466. And I asked,
"Where is everything?"
Copy !req
467. And a firefighter said,
"It's all gone, kid."
Copy !req
468. They took me down
to the ambulance.
Copy !req
469. They put me in the ambulance.
Copy !req
470. They took me to the hospital.
Copy !req
471. When we got
there I'm thinking,
Copy !req
472. "Okay, I'm a
police officer, I'm hurt.
Copy !req
473. I'm sure there's
probably of hundreds,
Copy !req
474. if not thousands of people
they're working on.
Copy !req
475. I'm hoping someone can
take a peek at my injuries."
You know?
Copy !req
476. And when they get
me off the ambulance,
Copy !req
477. all I see is these doctors
and nurses standing around.
Copy !req
478. And I was like,
"Where is everybody?"
Copy !req
479. And they're like, "You're it."
Copy !req
480. This is now, I don't know,
Copy !req
481. 11:30 at night, quarter to 12,
Copy !req
482. and they're telling
me that I'm it.
Copy !req
483. For the first day,
Copy !req
484. there was hope
that people would survive.
Copy !req
485. And I was hoping
my brother would survive.
Copy !req
486. In the back of my mind,
Copy !req
487. I was hoping that
I would see him
Copy !req
488. or he'd just walk up
and tap me on the shoulder.
Copy !req
489. And then we would, uh, talk
about it for weeks to come.
Copy !req
490. Until the evening
of September 12th,
Copy !req
491. there was still dust and
smoke coming from the pile,
Copy !req
492. and the tip of Manhattan
was in total blackness.
Copy !req
493. And I'm walking
back to the firehouse,
Copy !req
494. and knowing that
my brother was gone.
Copy !req
495. It was an— it was a
very eerie feeling of,
Copy !req
496. of loss.
Copy !req
497. Certainly, being part
of the fire department,
Copy !req
498. I've seen many
things and—and, um,
Copy !req
499. and people dying.
Copy !req
500. I just never thought
that I would have to
deliver the same message
Copy !req
501. to my family about my brother.
Copy !req
502. I went over to
my parents' house,
Copy !req
503. pulled into the little driveway
and walked in
Copy !req
504. the back door, and, uh,
Copy !req
505. and told 'em, um,
Copy !req
506. that there was, um,
Copy !req
507. there was no hope.
Copy !req
508. It's not part of nature
Copy !req
509. for your kids to die
before you.
Copy !req
510. The only thing that's
important in my life right now
Copy !req
511. is to stay focused on
how do I find my daughter,
Copy !req
512. how do get to where she is?
Copy !req
513. I'm gonna find my daughter
no matter what it takes,
Copy !req
514. no matter what I have to do.
Copy !req
515. There's only one thing
in my life right now
Copy !req
516. and that's to bring her home.
Copy !req
517. Ma'am, tell me,
you were Yvonne's best friend.
Tell me about Yvonne.
Copy !req
518. We're all her
best friends over here.
We're looking for Yvonne.
Copy !req
519. She was on the 94th floor.
Copy !req
520. She was an Amex employee
who worked at Marsh McLennan.
Copy !req
521. Please, somebody from
any floors, from 88 and up,
Copy !req
522. please call our number,
917364, and tell us...
Copy !req
523. What happened over there
and if anybody got out.
Copy !req
524. And if anyone made it,
please call us.
Copy !req
525. Joey, as you can tell,
Copy !req
526. it is just an endless
sea of people who are
looking for their loved ones,
Copy !req
527. who are doing
anything they can to
find some sign, any sign.
Copy !req
528. Joey.
Copy !req
529. Thank you, Mayor.
Copy !req
530. Everybody,
thank you for your help.
Copy !req
531. I give myself no credit
for any part of that rescue.
Copy !req
532. God uses the weak
to confound the wise.
Copy !req
533. So, God uses the low,
the low people of the world,
Copy !req
534. to confound the wise.
Copy !req
535. There's no way that I...
Copy !req
536. That I could ever turn
around and say it was me.
Copy !req
537. I had no desire, no will,
no strength, no training,
Copy !req
538. no power to—
to have accomplished
Copy !req
539. what the Lord
used me to do that night.
Copy !req
540. It was Super Bowl Sunday,
Copy !req
541. and I was working that day.
Copy !req
542. Uh, I remember being
called to the site
Copy !req
543. and they wouldn't tell me why.
Copy !req
544. But I knew why.
Copy !req
545. My brother, he was found
after digging for months.
Copy !req
546. Placed him on
a stretcher
Copy !req
547. and carried him to
a waiting ambulance.
Copy !req
548. And I got in the back.
Copy !req
549. And it was one of
the saddest moments or
Copy !req
550. the saddest moment of my life.
Copy !req
551. I, um, was sitting
on the, uh, bench,
Copy !req
552. next to the stretcher,
Copy !req
553. in tears.
Copy !req
554. The lights of the
fire truck behind, flashing,
Copy !req
555. um, with the number 33 on it.
Copy !req
556. And then I could remember
moving from an intense sadness
Copy !req
557. to thinking about
the times we sailed.
Copy !req
558. And the sadness disappeared
Copy !req
559. into wonderful memories.
Copy !req
560. One of the captains
told me
Copy !req
561. that he met my brother
on the ninth floor
Copy !req
562. and he said that if it
wasn't for my brother
directing him and his unit,
Copy !req
563. he woulda never got out alive.
Copy !req
564. He could've got out.
Copy !req
565. Not just him, but his unit.
Copy !req
566. Engine 33 made a commitment
Copy !req
567. to help other firefighters,
Copy !req
568. so they stopped,
and they redirected not only
Copy !req
569. the firefighters
but other civilians
to the safest stairs.
Copy !req
570. Um...
Copy !req
571. And that's probably
what we're most proud of.
Copy !req
572. To me, it's still a cemetery.
Copy !req
573. I know it's a memorial,
some people think it's a park,
Copy !req
574. but to me it's a cemetery.
Copy !req
575. Over 1,100 people
are still missing that
have never been found.
Copy !req
576. I work at the
9/11 Memorial Museum.
Copy !req
577. We take care of the pools;
we keep the place clean;
Copy !req
578. we take care of the grass;
we take care of the trees.
Copy !req
579. I wanna keep
that place pristine,
Copy !req
580. so when the family members
come there they're proud
Copy !req
581. of how we remember their—
their loved ones.
Copy !req
582. Still around, guys,
still around.
Copy !req
583. I made it.
Copy !req
584. What's your name?
Copy !req
585. Tom Canavan.
Tom,
what happened, man?
Copy !req
586. Uh, big boom.
Copy !req
587. Come down the steps,
Copy !req
588. everything fine till
we got to the basement,
Copy !req
589. and then everything
just fell in.
Copy !req
590. I got trapped in
there with another guy.
Copy !req
591. It's hard sometimes to go
Copy !req
592. just through
everyday life without
Copy !req
593. thinking about that day.
Copy !req
594. And I know a lotta people go,
Copy !req
595. "Well, you're alive.
Get over it."
Copy !req
596. There is no getting over it.
Copy !req
597. There is no...
Copy !req
598. There's dealing with it
and moving on with your life,
Copy !req
599. but it's always
gonna be there.
Copy !req
600. And it's a big part of my life
because now I chose to make it
Copy !req
601. as a part of my life.
Copy !req
602. And that's, I think
that's my legacy now.
Copy !req
603. When I bring people
through sometimes, who visit,
Copy !req
604. we go to the memorial exhibit
Copy !req
605. where we have
pictures of the victims.
Copy !req
606. I asked the people that
I'm bringing through,
Copy !req
607. "Do you notice
anything similar with them?"
Copy !req
608. They'll look at them.
Copy !req
609. Some people get it,
some don't.
Copy !req
610. And they'll say,
"They're smiling."
Copy !req
611. Ruth Clifford McCourt
Copy !req
612. and her daughter
Juliana Valentine McCourt.
Copy !req
613. Jennieann Maffeo.
Copy !req
614. Andy Fredericks.
Copy !req
615. Orio Palmer.
Copy !req
616. Billy McGann.
Copy !req
617. Tommy Swift.
Copy !req
618. Steve Strauss.
Copy !req
619. Lindsay Herkness.
Copy !req
620. Rick Rescorla.
Copy !req
621. It was Mark Schwartz,
Copy !req
622. Carlos Lilo,
James Pappageorge.
Copy !req
623. Kevin Cleary.
Copy !req
624. Steven Chucknick.
Copy !req
625. Jose Marrero.
Copy !req
626. And part
of our job here is to show you
Copy !req
627. this is how
these people lived.
Copy !req
628. They were just
everyday people;
Copy !req
629. they got up,
they went to work;
Copy !req
630. feed their kids,
put clothes on their back,
Copy !req
631. get 'em through school,
make their life good.
Copy !req
632. Antoinette Sherman.
Copy !req
633. Mark Bingham.

Copy !req
646. My brother,
Lieutenant Kevin Pfeifer.
Copy !req
647. my best friend.
Copy !req
648. Your memory shouldn't be
your name on a wall somewhere.
Copy !req
649. That's not you.
Copy !req
650. You are the person
in that photo album.
Copy !req
651. You are the smiling person,
living your life.
Copy !req
652. That's how you want
people to remember you.
Copy !req
653. Vinnie Danz.
