1. You see the plane,
he gonna make a maneuver.
Copy !req
2. The next thing I know, bam.
Copy !req
3. We stood right
in front of the elevator.
Copy !req
4. Delise and I and 18 other
people from my office.
Copy !req
5. These were all big shots.
Copy !req
6. The head of human resources,
the General Manager.
Copy !req
7. All these big shots just
standing up right there.
Copy !req
8. Not a word is said.
Copy !req
9. The elevator doors open,
we got in.
Copy !req
10. As I'm
getting out of the door,
Copy !req
11. the security guard
looks at me and says,
Copy !req
12. "Where are you going?"
Copy !req
13. I said, "I'm going home.
Copy !req
14. I saw fireballs falling
from the other building."
Copy !req
15. He said,
"Your building is safe.
Copy !req
16. It's secure.
Go back to your office.
Copy !req
17. You can hear the
whoop-whoop signals.
Copy !req
18. Your building is safe.
Copy !req
19. It's secure.
Go back to your office.
Copy !req
20. Nobody else is coming out."
Copy !req
21. Delise stepped out,
and she said,
Copy !req
22. "Stan, I'm scared.
I wanna go home."
Copy !req
23. I said, "Well, go, go, go.
Take the rest of the day off."
Copy !req
24. I had that choice to
go back into that elevator
Copy !req
25. at that point or go home.
Copy !req
26. So, I don't know what to do.
Copy !req
27. The doors are about to
close and Jack Andriaccio
is holding on to one end.
Copy !req
28. And Manny Gomez is
holding on to the other end.
Copy !req
29. "Come on, Stan the Man.
Copy !req
30. You're not scared
to go back up.
Copy !req
31. Come on, Stan, we don't
have all day here."
Copy !req
32. And I walked
back in that elevator.
Copy !req
33. And all I was doing was
being faithful to authority.
Copy !req
34. They said go back.
Copy !req
35. All right, so we go back.
Copy !req
36. The door closes and I can
still remember the look on
Copy !req
37. the faces of everybody
in that elevator.
Copy !req
38. Because I was the
last one who stepped in,
Copy !req
39. and everybody
is looking at me, like,
Copy !req
40. "Why did you take so long?
We were waiting on you."
Copy !req
41. Not realizing I would
never see them again.
Copy !req
42. We saw a lot
of things that day
that no one should see.
Copy !req
43. To this day,
Copy !req
44. I still have my times when
I can't take it anymore,
Copy !req
45. you know,
when I still think about it.
Copy !req
46. There were times
when I would go over
the Brooklyn Bridge
Copy !req
47. going into work and...
Copy !req
48. it just got me so bad
that I—I couldn't take
it anymore and there was,
Copy !req
49. as I was driving
over the bridge,
Copy !req
50. I actually felt myself
Copy !req
51. almost trying to jerk
the wheel off the side
Copy !req
52. to just drive off
the edge of the bridge,
Copy !req
53. just so I didn't have
to deal with it anymore.
Copy !req
54. You know, and every time
I did that, I was, like,
Copy !req
55. you can't do this, you know,
Copy !req
56. just keep going.
Copy !req
57. Just keep going;
you can do this.
Copy !req
58. I've worked as an
emergency medical technician.
Copy !req
59. I was young.
Copy !req
60. 21-year-old kid.
Copy !req
61. And we were
driving down to the
Trade Center to help people.
Copy !req
62. As we pull up, we
see hundreds of people
just running out to us.
Copy !req
63. And you're just
looking through and you
don't know where to go,
Copy !req
64. because there's just
so much chaos going on.
Copy !req
65. Oh, man. Shit, man!
Copy !req
66. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
67. Oh, boy.
Copy !req
68. And I remember as I
was grabbing my equipment to
go see what we were gonna do,
Copy !req
69. some people kept on
running up to me and, like,
Copy !req
70. "You gotta help my friend!
You gotta help my friend!"
Copy !req
71. I'm, like, "Okay."
I'm, like, "Calm down."
Copy !req
72. I'm like, "Where is
your friend? What happened?"
Copy !req
73. "They jumped."
Copy !req
74. I'm, like, "From where?"
Copy !req
75. "From the 30th floor.
From up there."
Copy !req
76. I'm, like, "They're dead.
The bridge is that way.
Just run."
Copy !req
77. And I remember we just
grabbed the first four
or five people that we saw
Copy !req
78. that had blood on them,
Copy !req
79. and we ran into the
back of our ambulance.
Copy !req
80. The rules almost went
out the window that day.
Copy !req
81. You did what you
could for who you could.
Copy !req
82. Deploy North.
Gotta go people
let's go, let's go.
Copy !req
83. Get to the end of the street.
Copy !req
84. I'm
on the 81st floor
in the South Tower,
Copy !req
85. in a huge
glass-enclosed office.
Copy !req
86. The phone is ringing.
Copy !req
87. I pick up the phone,
it's a young lady from
Chicago on the other end.
Copy !req
88. "Stan, get out."
Copy !req
89. "Why do I have to get out?"
Copy !req
90. With the phone in my hand,
I'm standing up,
Copy !req
91. not looking in any
particular direction.
Copy !req
92. But something caught my
attention looking towards
Copy !req
93. the direction of the
Statue of Liberty, south.
Copy !req
94. What I saw was a tiny little
speck first of a plane.
Copy !req
95. And within the split
second, it's getting larger
and larger and larger.
Copy !req
96. "Oh, my God, it's
coming towards me.
It's coming for me!"
Copy !req
97. Eye-level eye contact.
Copy !req
98. And as I'm watching,
within split seconds,
Copy !req
99. I can see this
plane start tilting.
Copy !req
100. Very gradually.
Copy !req
101. And I'm watching this
plane like being hypnotized.
Copy !req
102. Can't move my eyes away.
Copy !req
103. And I can hear this revving
sound this engine is making.
Copy !req
104. Like when the plane takes off,
Copy !req
105. that sound it's making,
Copy !req
106. well, multiply
that by 1,000.
Copy !req
107. And this plane is
coming towards me.
Copy !req
108. And my mind is
reacting so fast and I
don't know what to do.
Copy !req
109. And the next thing
I remember saying and I
don't know why I said it.
Copy !req
110. I said, "Lord, I can't
do this. You take over."
Copy !req
111. Dropped the phone, screamed,
dove under the desk.
Copy !req
112. Come on, get up,
get up, get up, get up.
Copy !req
113. Get up, now. Get up!
Copy !req
114. Oh, my God. Oh, my God!
Copy !req
115. Jesus Christ.
Copy !req
116. A second airplane, a 727,
just rammed into the building.
Copy !req
117. Where do I go?
Do I go home?
Copy !req
118. It's a US Airway
jet slammed into it.
Copy !req
119. I saw it.
Copy !req
120. Hello, Gerald?
Copy !req
121. Yo, I'm gonna get
outta the city, yo.
Copy !req
122. I ain't staying here.
Copy !req
123. Look!
Look at the second building!
Copy !req
124. When the plane hit,
I got blown out of my shoes,
Copy !req
125. and I hit the marble
wall in front of me
Copy !req
126. with my upper body.
Copy !req
127. And then my strong will
or my obstinance kicked in.
Copy !req
128. I'm, like, "Oh, no way.
Copy !req
129. I am not orphaning my
kids in this building.
Copy !req
130. I am getting out of here."
Copy !req
131. We got into the stairwells
and we stumbled across
Copy !req
132. this odd gentleman
who had artificial legs.
Copy !req
133. And he sat down and said,
"I can't go anymore."
Copy !req
134. The two men just said,
"No way. Not on our watch."
Copy !req
135. And they picked
him up and they just
started carrying him down.
Copy !req
136. I encountered a woman
on the stairwell who was
having an asthma attack.
Copy !req
137. And in my pocketbook
I had an inhaler.
Copy !req
138. And I handed it to her.
Copy !req
139. I said, "Here. Just use it."
Copy !req
140. And she was
using it, and she said,
Copy !req
141. "Oh, my God, I can breathe,"
Copy !req
142. and she started down.
Copy !req
143. So, you just did,
Copy !req
144. everybody was
just doing what they
needed to do to help.
Copy !req
145. It was a constant
very quick flow,
Copy !req
146. but people
were kind to each other.
Copy !req
147. We were, like,
right in the path of all
Copy !req
148. the debris from
the second plane
and from the building,
Copy !req
149. and it was just shot
right towards our ambulance.
Copy !req
150. All the patients, they
were all huddled on the floor,
Copy !req
151. all crunched together with
their hands over their heads.
Copy !req
152. And we were just
kinda on top of them.
Copy !req
153. We were scared in there.
Copy !req
154. I mean, at least I know I
can't speak for anybody else,
Copy !req
155. but I can speak for myself.
I was terrified.
Copy !req
156. I looked at my partner
and I said, you know,
Copy !req
157. "We need to
get outta here."
Copy !req
158. When we pulled outta there,
Copy !req
159. I hear him scream
through the front,
Copy !req
160. "I'm getting flagged.
I'm being flagged."
Copy !req
161. So, I open up
the back door, I said,
Copy !req
162. I'm, like, "What's going on?"
Copy !req
163. He's, like, "This guy jumped
in front of the ambulance.
Copy !req
164. He said we need
to help this lady."
Copy !req
165. So, I'm, like, "All right."
Copy !req
166. So, we jump out and
we see this one lady.
Copy !req
167. She was lying
half on the street,
Copy !req
168. half on the sidewalk.
Copy !req
169. Orlando and I were
able to just
Copy !req
170. move her over to
the side a little bit,
Copy !req
171. and we saw that
her whole back side looked
like it was just torn off.
Copy !req
172. From her shoulder blades
all the way down to, like,
Copy !req
173. the top of her thigh.
Copy !req
174. Looked like everything
was just ripped right off.
Copy !req
175. We didn't know it at the time,
Copy !req
176. but we found out later
on that she was hit by the
Copy !req
177. landing gear of
the second plane.
Copy !req
178. And it went right down
and ripped off half her back.
Copy !req
179. As we're driving, she
was screaming out in agony.
Copy !req
180. I remember seeing
the three or four other
patients in the ambulance.
Copy !req
181. You know,
and you can see them,
that they're scared.
Copy !req
182. They were all crying,
they were all looking round.
Copy !req
183. Like, and,
they're looking at me.
Copy !req
184. And here I am,
21-year-old kid.
Copy !req
185. What do I know?
Copy !req
186. And I remember the
woman on the stretcher,
Copy !req
187. I go down and she's awake
and she's looking at me
Copy !req
188. and she's screaming.
Copy !req
189. She's, like, "It hurts.
Copy !req
190. I'm hurt. Help me!
Somebody please help me."
Copy !req
191. And I remember just
getting down on my knee and
Copy !req
192. just holding her hand
and getting close to her.
Copy !req
193. I'm, like, "It's all right.
It's okay. We got you."
Copy !req
194. I'm, like, "I'm here now.
Copy !req
195. I'm gonna get you
to the hospital."
Copy !req
196. You know, "We're gonna,
we're gonna take care of you."
Copy !req
197. There was a
bunch of doctors just
waiting for us at the door.
Copy !req
198. And they start grabbing some
of the other patients that we
Copy !req
199. brought in and other people.
Copy !req
200. And we're, like,
"No, no, no, forget those.
Copy !req
201. I'm, like, this one.
Copy !req
202. You gotta take this
one in, right here."
Copy !req
203. You know, you just
handing the patient over
Copy !req
204. it's, like, okay,
I've done my part.
Copy !req
205. I did my part, I did the
best that I could for her.
Copy !req
206. And I brought her to
people that can help her
a lot more than I can.
Copy !req
207. I
really thought I'd died.
Copy !req
208. Here I am alive.
Copy !req
209. This is not possible.
Copy !req
210. Upon impact,
a large chunk of that plane
Copy !req
211. was stuck in the office doorway.
Copy !req
212. The air pressure was so great,
it was sucking everything out.
Copy !req
213. It looks like a demolition
crew came in and just ripped
the entire floor apart.
Copy !req
214. Every wall is flattened.
Copy !req
215. Every piece of
furniture is mangled.
Copy !req
216. I'm hiding under the desk.
Copy !req
217. It looks like somebody
took a giant bag of cement
and threw it in the air.
Copy !req
218. The jet fuel is
smelling so profusely.
Copy !req
219. The sound was so deafening
that my ears pop.
Copy !req
220. I got temporarily deaf.
Copy !req
221. All the cables
that were hanging in
the ceiling dropped.
Copy !req
222. And they're short-circuiting.
Copy !req
223. The sprinkler system came on.
Copy !req
224. And part of the
floor collapsed.
Copy !req
225. And it's hovering like this,
right over the desk.
Copy !req
226. If I don't get burned, well,
then, I'll get electrocuted.
Copy !req
227. If I don't get electrocuted
and burned, well, then,
Copy !req
228. the floor is gonna collapse.
Copy !req
229. I'm gonna die.
I'm gonna get crushed.
Copy !req
230. And if the three
of them miss me, well,
Copy !req
231. then I'm gonna get sucked
out by the air pressure.
Copy !req
232. One way or
the other, I'm gone.
Copy !req
233. And I started to scream.
Copy !req
234. When the
second tower got hit,
Copy !req
235. that was a terrifying moment.
Copy !req
236. Of course, now you realize,
this is no accident.
Copy !req
237. This is intentional.
Copy !req
238. And that changes your
whole perception of what
you're dealing with now.
Copy !req
239. One of my thoughts was going
through my head, is stay calm.
Copy !req
240. You know.
Copy !req
241. You have to make,
Copy !req
242. I knew I was gonna
be having to make some
very serious decisions
Copy !req
243. involving people's lives.
Copy !req
244. Which is my job,
Copy !req
245. which I'm trained for,
Copy !req
246. and I'm trained very well
for on the Fire Department.
Copy !req
247. And I wanted to make it
as clear ahead as I could.
Copy !req
248. So, I had to avoid that
little panicky thing
Copy !req
249. that you go through at first.
Copy !req
250. I was climbing the stairs
in the North Tower.
Copy !req
251. And our orders were to
report to the 23rd floor.
Copy !req
252. So, I'm walking
around the floor,
Copy !req
253. I'm looking for this chief
I'm supposed to report to.
Copy !req
254. And I hear chatter.
Copy !req
255. I hear people talking.
Copy !req
256. And, of course, I'm curious.
Nobody's supposed to be there.
Copy !req
257. And I open the door
and there's two people
inside the stairway.
Copy !req
258. It was an injured secretary,
Copy !req
259. a woman, and her
boss stayed with her.
Copy !req
260. This is an
incredibly heroic guy.
Copy !req
261. I wish I can
remember his name.
Copy !req
262. But he stayed
and took his in—
Copy !req
263. trying to get his injured
secretary out of the building.
Copy !req
264. And they were in stairway C.
Copy !req
265. Now, they were alone;
Copy !req
266. there was nobody
else in stairway C, and
I was worried about them.
Copy !req
267. So, I told them,
"Go to stairway B.
Copy !req
268. The Fire Department's
in stairway B;
they will help you."
Copy !req
269. And they were frozen;
they couldn't move.
Copy !req
270. They just froze.
Copy !req
271. And then I yelled at them.
Copy !req
272. I felt bad, but
I yelled at them.
Copy !req
273. I just, "Get!"
Copy !req
274. You know, "Stairway B!
Copy !req
275. I'm not gonna tell you again,"
you know, like that.
Copy !req
276. But I had to do it,
you know, "cause I had to
Copy !req
277. startle them to get
"em out of that.
Copy !req
278. They were in, like,
a funk, you know what I mean?
Copy !req
279. And finally they
listened to me and
went over to stairway B.
Copy !req
280. And they survived.
Copy !req
281. They got out. That was good.
Copy !req
282. Calm down, we're
the fire department
she's gonna be fine.
Copy !req
283. To help anybody,
you've gotta start triaging.
Copy !req
284. You try to
determine the injury
Copy !req
285. at a second in the moment.
Copy !req
286. So that the unit
coming behind you
Copy !req
287. can immediately treat
that person.
Copy !req
288. Green tag for minor injuries,
Copy !req
289. you understand everything.
Copy !req
290. Then you have the, uh,
red tag for immediate.
Copy !req
291. And then when
we get to the deceased,
Copy !req
292. that means no care needed.
Copy !req
293. At this time, this
person is presumed dead.
Copy !req
294. I was underneath the towers,
going from area to area.
Copy !req
295. I did not see any
living person...
Copy !req
296. on the ground.
Copy !req
297. Everybody was deceased.
Copy !req
298. So, going past, you
just rip the tags off
Copy !req
299. and left deceased,
deceased.
Copy !req
300. Until I ran into
that one person.
Copy !req
301. I put deceased,
which is the black tag.
Copy !req
302. And then she says,
Copy !req
303. "I'm not dead.
Call my daughter."
Copy !req
304. But she didn't know
what I knew, and she
didn't see what I'd seen.
Copy !req
305. Her head did not
hit the ground, or I
couldn't see that the head,
Copy !req
306. "cause the hair
was still intact.
Copy !req
307. She looked like an
office personnel.
Copy !req
308. She looked like maybe a
woman that was on the plane.
Copy !req
309. And the makeup.
Copy !req
310. But what I saw
below the torso
Copy !req
311. was... complete crushed...
Copy !req
312. disfigurement.
Copy !req
313. This lady must have
came down feet first.
Copy !req
314. You can't take,
"Stop! Stop! I'm not dead!"
Copy !req
315. I could have done something
immediately to help her.
Copy !req
316. But I was panicking myself.
Copy !req
317. I was dealing
with death myself.
Copy !req
318. Even though I did not
fear death, or I wasn't
thinking about death.
Copy !req
319. But I saw death, and
I saw death, and I saw
death, and I saw death.
Copy !req
320. She would not survive
another couple of minutes.
Copy !req
321. So... I lied.
Copy !req
322. And said, "You're okay.
Copy !req
323. This is preliminary.
Copy !req
324. This is just...
Copy !req
325. I meant to make,
I tore the wrong thing off.
Copy !req
326. Relax.
Copy !req
327. They're coming,
they're coming,
they're coming.
Copy !req
328. Don't worry about
what I just did."
Copy !req
329. I had a guilty conscience
about what I was saying,
Copy !req
330. and that I was lying.
Copy !req
331. But I wasn't lying in
the fact of her condition.
Copy !req
332. I was lying in the fact
that I did think she was dead.
Copy !req
333. And that black tag
stayed with me.
Copy !req
334. It took me three years
to push it back
Copy !req
335. or from this
cortex part of my brain
Copy !req
336. to the frontal part
of my brain, the memory.
Copy !req
337. Or put it somewhere with the
psychiatrist and the clinician
Copy !req
338. to help me move
her around so that she's not
Copy !req
339. in the mind's eye
in the daytime
Copy !req
340. or in the night-time.
Copy !req
341. Or at any time.
Copy !req
342. The human body or the
human mind is not positioned,
Copy !req
343. or the brain can
never be positioned to
Copy !req
344. deal with tragedy
of another human being.
Copy !req
345. It just reminds you that
this could be your mother.
Copy !req
346. This is your father,
this is your family.
Copy !req
347. This is a human being.
Copy !req
348. You don't lie to the dying.
Copy !req
349. I came out
on the 44th floor,
Copy !req
350. "cause that's
where our stairwell ends.
Copy !req
351. And there was
panic and bedlam,
and it was pitch black.
Copy !req
352. And then all of a sudden in
this darkness is this voice.
Copy !req
353. He was singing,
and I think the singing
Copy !req
354. distracted everybody
that they were,
Copy !req
355. they stopped in their tracks
to see why he was singing,
Copy !req
356. or where he was singing from.
Copy !req
357. And it calmed everybody down.
Copy !req
358. And then he said these words.
Copy !req
359. He said, "Today is a proud
day to be an American."
Copy !req
360. It was Rick Rescorla,
our head of security.
Copy !req
361. Rick was so concerned
for many years about
Copy !req
362. the security and
safety of everybody
Copy !req
363. in the World Trade Center.
Copy !req
364. It had been attacked before,
Copy !req
365. and he was certain
it would happen again.
Copy !req
366. He did predict
that they would come.
Copy !req
367. If they came again, that
they would come from the air.
Copy !req
368. And it's very hard
to protect people when
they come from the air.
Copy !req
369. So, the only
protection would be to
teach them how to get out
Copy !req
370. in case
a catastrophe happened.
Copy !req
371. Rick had them redo the
stairwells, repaint them,
Copy !req
372. make sure there was lighting
Copy !req
373. so everybody could
see where we were going.
Copy !req
374. And four times a year,
Copy !req
375. we walked from 70 all the
way down to the sky lobby
Copy !req
376. to get out of the building.
Copy !req
377. You know, at first
people would just assume
this is over the top,
Copy !req
378. it was exaggerated.
Copy !req
379. Do we really need to do this?
Copy !req
380. I mean, in my mind,
Copy !req
381. my favorite line was,
Copy !req
382. "Lightning never strikes
the same place twice."
Copy !req
383. So, after "93,
I didn't even think about
it because I was, like,
Copy !req
384. "No one's ever gonna attack
the same building again."
Copy !req
385. That day, things were on fire.
Copy !req
386. You know, things
were blowing up,
Copy !req
387. and he really was able
to refocus everybody pretty
Copy !req
388. quickly and disperse
the crowds
Copy !req
389. to their proper stairwells
to get them out of there.
Copy !req
390. So, seeing Rick
was probably like seeing
Copy !req
391. your guardian angel
when I saw him on 44.
Copy !req
392. I wasn't nervous
at that point.
Copy !req
393. I really wasn't.
Copy !req
394. Hey, Kim.
Look at his big camera.
Look at his big camera.
Copy !req
395. He'll tell your
grandchildren you were there.
Copy !req
396. We were there.
Copy !req
397. I wasn't
emotional on that day.
Copy !req
398. I was not frozen in fear,
Copy !req
399. I wasn't thinking
horrible thoughts.
Copy !req
400. My mind, thankfully,
protected me
Copy !req
401. from absorbing any carnage.
Copy !req
402. You know, my mind blocked
Copy !req
403. anything that might have
been really ugly out there,
Copy !req
404. I don't remember.
Copy !req
405. Other than this grayness.
Copy !req
406. Others died and I didn't.
Copy !req
407. I wasn't having any
of that in my mind yet.
Copy !req
408. Again, I cannot explain why.
Copy !req
409. Um, and I keep wondering.
Copy !req
410. "You know, well, am I,
you know, am I cold-hearted?"
Copy !req
411. I don't... I don't think so.
Copy !req
412. I think I'm tender
and compassionate
when I need to be.
Copy !req
413. Odd.
Copy !req
414. I was stuck
in the 81st floor.
Copy !req
415. I crawled the entire length
of the loans department to
Copy !req
416. the lounge and the computer room
and the communication room.
Copy !req
417. And that's the
farthest I could have gone.
Copy !req
418. Because one lousy
sheet rock wall stood firm.
Copy !req
419. Just one wall.
Copy !req
420. That period of waiting
was the most painful thing
you would ever imagine.
Copy !req
421. That period of just waiting,
hoping that somebody
is gonna come to get you.
Copy !req
422. And I'm crying out
to this invisible God
that I've hurt so much.
Copy !req
423. From the 84th floor,
I led a group of people
down the stairs.
Copy !req
424. And we arrived on the
81st floor, me in the lead.
Copy !req
425. As I arrive there, a heavyset
woman came up and stopped me.
Copy !req
426. "We've just come off a
floor in flames and smoke,
and we've gotta go higher."
Copy !req
427. And, of course, I'm stopped
now and I can't get past her,
Copy !req
428. and bumping behind
me comes the rest of
my team, if you like.
Copy !req
429. So, now there's
this group of us.
Copy !req
430. Nine, ten people,
on the 81st floor landing,
Copy !req
431. who are now beginning
to debate listening
Copy !req
432. to her and starting
to discuss, "Well, do
we go up, do we go down?
Copy !req
433. What do we do now?"
Copy !req
434. I'm behind of a wall
Copy !req
435. and I'm crying out,
Copy !req
436. "Wait for me.
Don't leave me to die."
Copy !req
437. What I heard
was something like,
Copy !req
438. "Help! Help! I'm buried.
Is anyone there?
I can't breathe."
Copy !req
439. Kind of again
sobered up and said,
Copy !req
440. "Okay, I've got
a job to do here."
Copy !req
441. And my flashlight
back on again.
Copy !req
442. And as I squeezed onto
that floor sideways,
I have this very,
Copy !req
443. very clear memory
of everybody on that
landing turning around
Copy !req
444. and starting to
go up the stairs.
Copy !req
445. So, I started toward
the stranger's voice.
Copy !req
446. I can only
hear that voice faintly.
Copy !req
447. I had my hand
through that hole,
Copy !req
448. and I'm trying, "Please,
please, my hand is here!
Copy !req
449. Turn to your left!"
Copy !req
450. As I hear a little bit,
his voice is walking away.
Copy !req
451. His voice is
moving away from me.
Copy !req
452. "No, no, no!
Copy !req
453. Come back, come back
towards your right.
Copy !req
454. Come back, come back
towards your left.
Copy !req
455. Come straight,
straight-straight now."
Copy !req
456. As I can hear this
voice closer, closer.
Copy !req
457. Sharper.
Copy !req
458. "Look down!
Look down, look down."
Copy !req
459. There I am, with my
hand waving towards him.
Copy !req
460. When that light flashed on
my hand, all hope was there.
Copy !req
461. Somebody, this person
with this flashlight,
whoever it is,
Copy !req
462. somebody is gonna rescue me.
Copy !req
463. I'm gonna live.
Copy !req
464. It was that hope.
Copy !req
465. That feeling of
knowing that, you know what?
Copy !req
466. I'm gonna live.
Copy !req
467. That feeling of knowing
that you're gonna live,
Copy !req
468. that somebody is
here to take you home.
Copy !req
469. I'm gonna get to
see my children again.
Copy !req
470. I'm gonna be reconciled
with my wife again.
Copy !req
471. I'm gonna live.
Copy !req
472. They left me here to die,
but I'm gonna go home.
Copy !req
473. And this man really did that.
Copy !req
474. Rescued me so I could go home.
Copy !req
475. "Hallelujah,
I've been saved!" he said.
Copy !req
476. "One thing I gotta know:
do you know Jesus Christ?"
Copy !req
477. That was a very strange
thing to hear at that time,
Copy !req
478. and I wasn't ready for a
philosophical discussion,
Copy !req
479. so I stammered out a
rather pathetic reply.
Copy !req
480. "I go to church every Sunday."
Copy !req
481. That was the best
I could do to that question.
Copy !req
482. And, "Come on, we
got work to do here."
Copy !req
483. So, there was a lot of
debris to the right and debris
Copy !req
484. to the left of me, and this
immovable wall between us.
Copy !req
485. And I told him the only
way out of there is for
you to come up this wall.
Copy !req
486. So, he tried once,
and I missed him.
Copy !req
487. I said, "You must do this."
Copy !req
488. And over the wall he came and
then his weight on me pushed
Copy !req
489. the desk over.
Copy !req
490. We fell back onto
a pile of debris,
Copy !req
491. and he gave me a big kiss.
Copy !req
492. And he got
up and he says, "Well,
what are you doing?"
Copy !req
493. Fixed his jacket and his tie.
Copy !req
494. And he stretched his hand.
Copy !req
495. He says, "Brian Clark."
I said, "Stanley Praimnath."
Copy !req
496. And he said,
"I'm Stanley."
Copy !req
497. He said, "We'll be
brothers for life."
Copy !req
498. And I said, "Well,
I have no siblings."
Copy !req
499. I said, "We can be brothers."
Copy !req
500. And then I
noticed I had a puncture
wound on my right palm.
Copy !req
501. And Stanley also had a
puncture wound on his palm.
Copy !req
502. And I'm the one who did it.
Copy !req
503. I put our hands
together and said,
Copy !req
504. "We'll be blood
brothers for life."
Copy !req
505. And we made our way
off the floor back to
Copy !req
506. the 81st floor landing.
Copy !req
507. I shone the light
down and I took that.
Copy !req
508. I didn't see flames.
Copy !req
509. I saw some smoke coming up.
Copy !req
510. And I took that
gratefully, took that
fateful first step down.
Copy !req
511. And we continued on down.
Copy !req
512. Based on
the woman telling us that
Copy !req
513. we needed to go up because
down below was on fire,
Copy !req
514. we started to climb.
Copy !req
515. I guess we got to about the
91st floor and realized
Copy !req
516. there was no exiting.
Copy !req
517. The smoke was getting thicker,
Copy !req
518. and people were
starting to drift off.
Copy !req
519. It was like going
into a peaceful sleep.
Copy !req
520. I wanted to see my wife and
my four beautiful kids again.
Copy !req
521. As we were fading in
and out of consciousness,
Copy !req
522. I had heard a voice.
Copy !req
523. Some who are religious may
believe it's God or an angel.
Copy !req
524. Others, maybe it was my
adrenaline-fueled synapses.
Copy !req
525. I'm not sure, but
it was a very cool,
Copy !req
526. calm voice telling me to
get up and come this way.
Copy !req
527. And I followed the voice right
into the thickest of the smoke
Copy !req
528. and the fire.
Copy !req
529. And I pushed back on the wall
Copy !req
530. and I revealed
the staircase below.
Copy !req
531. And then I ran through
three flights of stairs
Copy !req
532. that were on fire.
Copy !req
533. I had burns on 60% of my body.
Copy !req
534. My contact lenses
were melted to my eyes.
Copy !req
535. But I was alive.
Copy !req
536. When we got
down to about the 22nd floor,
Copy !req
537. the integrity of
the building was really
Copy !req
538. starting to deteriorate.
Copy !req
539. And then there was cracks
starting in the walls.
Copy !req
540. And, you know, we were, like,
Copy !req
541. "Holy crap, we have
to get out of here."
Copy !req
542. And we really started
to pick up the pace,
Copy !req
543. like, almost running.
Copy !req
544. And all I kept thinking is,
Copy !req
545. "This building
is not taking me.
Copy !req
546. I'm going home to my kids."
Copy !req
547. So, I kept going and going.
Copy !req
548. And when we got to the
bottom floor we were yelling,
Copy !req
549. "We're here, we're here!"
And some people were clapping.
Copy !req
550. And they're, like,
"All right, we're
right behind you."
Copy !req
551. When we
emerged out of the building,
Copy !req
552. there was a sense of
relief that we were safe.
Copy !req
553. Keep it moving, folks
The danger is not over!
Copy !req
554. They ushered
us across the street.
Copy !req
555. My little group, we
sat down on the curb.
Copy !req
556. And they were triaging
right behind us.
Copy !req
557. They were carrying
very wounded people
behind us, laying them down,
Copy !req
558. trying to triage
what they could do.
Copy !req
559. When we looked up and saw
the burning on our building,
Copy !req
560. my first thought was,
Copy !req
561. "This is coming down."
Copy !req
562. I'm not gonna die
here on the street.
Copy !req
563. I just got out of that building;
I have to get out of here.
Copy !req
564. You gotta keep going.
Copy !req
565. Sir, are you
gonna stay behind?
Copy !req
566. Come on.
Copy !req
567. Please keep moving.
Please keep moving.
Copy !req
568. Some of the people
we work with encountered Rick
Copy !req
569. on one of the lower floors
Copy !req
570. as they were
leaving the building.
Copy !req
571. Rick was heading
up the stairs.
Copy !req
572. And they said,
"Rick, come with us."
Copy !req
573. And he's, like, "No, no.
Copy !req
574. I have to do one
more sweep to make sure
all our people are safe."
Copy !req
575. He could have gotten out.
Copy !req
576. But he chose to go back up.
Copy !req
577. All I knew that Rick was doing
what Rick was destined to do,
Copy !req
578. and that was get everybody
out of that building.
Copy !req
579. And knowing Rick,
Copy !req
580. you knew he wasn't leaving
until that last person was out.
Copy !req
581. Got the helicopter out.
Yeah.
Copy !req
582. Oh, shit, man!
Copy !req
583. It's coming down,
it's coming down!
Copy !req
584. The ash filled
the air and blocked the sun.
Copy !req
585. And, very strangely,
as we went down Broadway,
Copy !req
586. and it wasn't
densely populated.
Copy !req
587. All of a sudden,
Stanley was gone.
Copy !req
588. I'm, I'm, I'm looking
around wondering where he is.
Copy !req
589. And this feeling washed
over me, like,
Copy !req
590. "Ugh! Did I just imagine this?
Copy !req
591. Was Stanley some sort
of a guardian angel?"
Copy !req
592. Like, I had real
confused doubts about
what had just transpired.
Copy !req
593. I learned later from Stanley
that he had commandeered
Copy !req
594. a guy in a pickup
truck and told him,
Copy !req
595. "You drive me to Brooklyn."
Copy !req
596. Apparently, the guy did.
Copy !req
597. Brian said to
me later on, had he made
the choice to go back up like
Copy !req
598. the others,
he would have died.
Copy !req
599. But there was
something in that scream
that held him to help me.
Copy !req
600. So, every time
I tell this man,
Copy !req
601. "Brian, thank you
for saving my life."
Copy !req
602. He says,
"No, no, Stan. Thank you.
Copy !req
603. Had you not screamed,
I would have gone back up.
Copy !req
604. I would have died."
Copy !req
605. Being as young
as I was at the time,
Copy !req
606. that day, um,
definitely changed me.
Copy !req
607. You know, there
are things that I live
with to this day that still
Copy !req
608. haunt my dreams from it.
Copy !req
609. You know, when I
start thinking about
how bad it could be,
Copy !req
610. I keep thinking of that
patient that we picked up.
Copy !req
611. The woman on the stretcher.
Copy !req
612. We didn't think that she was
gonna make it through at all.
Copy !req
613. But we found out
a couple of weeks later
that she was still alive.
Copy !req
614. This is
Mag for Magnificent.
Copy !req
615. I got him last night from
a friend of my fiancé's.
Copy !req
616. He is so much fun.
Copy !req
617. I, normally there's
little white blankets here.
Copy !req
618. And then I got
Mag last night, too.
Copy !req
619. It made me
realize that color's been
absent in my environment.
Copy !req
620. And it showed up when it
really needed to be there.
Copy !req
621. And I found out later
on her name was Debbie.
Copy !req
622. And I remember going to
the hospital to go see her.
Copy !req
623. And they brought us
over to her room and she was
still intubated at the time,
Copy !req
624. but she was sitting
up and conscious, and
she's looking at us.
Copy !req
625. And she, see
her moving her hand and
she's, like, it's them.
Copy !req
626. It's them.
Copy !req
627. And she was pointing to us.
Copy !req
628. And all the people
that we walked by in the
waiting room was her parents,
Copy !req
629. her fiancé and the
rest of her family.
Copy !req
630. They came over to us and
they were just hugging us.
Copy !req
631. You know, it became,
Copy !req
632. it was very emotional
for Orlando and I.
Copy !req
633. And
Frank Puma was the one,
Copy !req
634. the guy who drove
the EMT truck
Copy !req
635. that allowed
me to get on it.
Copy !req
636. The few
times that I was able to
see her in the hospital,
Copy !req
637. she was always upbeat.
Copy !req
638. She's, like, "Don't worry,
I'm gonna get better."
Copy !req
639. And throughout my time,
Copy !req
640. she has been an
inspiration for me to get
me out of my dark places.
Copy !req
641. Knowing the fact that I gave
someone back their family.
Copy !req
642. I helped bring
that person back home.
Copy !req
643. Our orders were to go
upstairs in the North Tower
Copy !req
644. for search and rescue.
Copy !req
645. And, uh, we heard a
loud noise outside.
Copy !req
646. And I see Billy Burke
walking towards me.
Copy !req
647. He's got a funny
look on his face.
Copy !req
648. And I look at him and I said,
Copy !req
649. "Is that what
I thought it was?"
Copy !req
650. Looking at a piece of
our building fell off.
Copy !req
651. And he just looks
at me and he says,
Copy !req
652. "The South Tower
has just collapsed."
Copy !req
653. Knowing what that meant,
Copy !req
654. that right next door to us,
Copy !req
655. thousands of people
were just killed.
Copy !req
656. Some of our friends, too.
Copy !req
657. And I did the
quick calculation
in my mind and I says,
Copy !req
658. "All right. If that one
can go, this one can go.
Copy !req
659. It's time for us
to get outta here."
Copy !req
660. And my guys didn't react.
They balked.
Copy !req
661. They didn't wanna leave.
Copy !req
662. And I said, "Let's go.
It's time to go."
Copy !req
663. So, we start our retreat
down the B stairway
of the North Tower.
Copy !req
664. And I'd just be whispering
it to Billy Butler's ears.
Copy !req
665. "Billy, can you
move a little faster?"
Copy !req
666. And the, uh...
Copy !req
667. collapse of the North Tower
starts with us still inside.
